began making unique headpieces and
I accessories in 2015. At first, it was just
something to do to pass the time as I was
going through a lot of depression and an
identity crisis. But it opened up a whole other
side of me. It made me feel relaxed, and
my anxiety slowly faded away over time. It
became something I love and cherish. But
it was a lot of work because I remember so
many times where I almost gave up because
of the pressure of
creating unique
headpieces and also
finishing to my client's
expectation. I
was frustrated, but I
realized taking a step
back during that moment really helps you
feel more determined to go back and finish it.
I
love
I love creating, so I had to use all my free
time to do so because I had three jobs at
the time. But I made it work! I learned to
prioritize and find the balance between
spending time with my family, working at
all my jobs, and creating headpieces and accessories!
I also learned to take breaks, and
not work on projects all night, because it
can definitely impact your mental & physical
health and confidence. I have to remind
myself that my health is of utmost importance,
so I took many breaks in between
photo / adoralanephotography
I love
Creating
crafting. I soon realized it was more
than a hobby, and I became devoted
and determined. I believed that one
day, I would make my dreams come
true and have my own business!
Honestly, growing up, I wanted to
be and do so many different things. I
wanted to be a photographer, makeup artist,
chef, interior designer, fashion designer,
and a fashion model. But I remember
my parents telling me
that I can only pick one thing, and
none of those were on their list
of what they wanted me to be.
Skipping forward to the now,
I wouldn't change anything, even though
there were a couple of negative situations
along the way. I had to overcome them,
learn from my mistakes, and learn the ropes
of how to own a business. I am so happy
now, and I am
excited to create
new pieces
and collaborate
with other artists,
photographers,
and models!
I would love to create fresh and new out of
this world creations for the rest of my life!
Never
give
up
I love
The headache was slight and subtle; almost
imperceptible that morning when
Jazmine awoke. But now as she gets
dressed, she closes her eyes tight, her slender
fingers massage her temples gently. The light
pain has turned into a steady pulse with each
heartbeat.
"I can't be getting sick, not today of all days!"
Jaz murmurs to herself.
A look of exasperation on her face stares back at
her in the mirror. She opens the medicine cabinet
and finds the bottle marked Tylenol. She dry
swallows a couple of tabs, then her eyes widen.
"Ugh!" She barely manages to choke out. Realizing
one tab is not going down, she quickly runs
the cold water in the sink, cupping her hands
under the stream. Taking a few sips, she then
splashes the cold water over her face, hoping to
find some relief.
"This is not how I want to start the day."
Looking up at her pale expression in the mirror,
she decides it's not worth worrying about. She
has bigger things pressing on her mind than
some stupid headache. It's most likely the stress
building. After all, tonight is one very special
occasion. It's Prom Night.
"I'm fine." she says.
"Oh, hey, ok. I just wanted to say, I'm like really
excited about tonight. Tonight is gonna be a
night to remember. Prom is a once in a lifetime
kinda thing." Even over the phone connection,
she can hear his voice blushing. Zach is a very
nice guy. A little bit shy and full of manners,
and that's what makes him so special. He's also
the captain of the high school football team, but
definitely not the meathead you would expect
from being a high school jock. She remembers
the first day she moved to town, he had noticed
her at the local Tasty Freeze. He held the door
for her. That's how sweet Zach is.
"I really want this to be a special night." Zach
continues.
Jaz smiles. "I know you do, Zach. It will be a
wonderful night. I can feel it." she replies with a
smile in her voice. "What time are you going to
be here?" she then asks.
"Oh, yeah, I'll be there to pick you up at 7."
"Ok, sounds good. I'll be ready."
She smiles and taps the end button on the
screen.
The distinct buzzing of her phone quickly
brings her back to the moment. Rushing out of
the bathroom, she grasps the phone off of her
night table. The caller id displayed on the screen
is definitely a welcome sight.
She answers it on the third ring. "Hi, baby," Her
voice a bit raw from the pill rebellion in her
throat moments ago.
"Hey! Hi Jaz. I hope this isn't a bad time. You
don't sound so good. Is everything ok?" The
husky and concerned voice of Zach Bradford
replies.
"No... no, not at all." She says, clearing her
throat. "Just a pill went down, or wouldn't go
down the right way." Laughing a bit at herself.
Mrs. Sylvia Reynolds is wiping dry a few dishes in the
kitchen, then suddenly and calmly, she turns to look over her
shoulder.
"You can't sneak up on me, you know."
Jazmine bursts out in laughter, "Oh! You never let me scare
you!"
Sylvia joins in with the laughter, although with a bit more
sophistication. Putting down the last dish, she turns to face Jaz.
Resting against the counter with her arms folded across her
chest, she says, "Well, considering that I am the one that raised
you. You haven't matured enough to best me yet." She smiles
and winks at Jazmine.
Jaz covers her mouth as her laughter turns to a fit of coughing.
Sylvia's smile fades, replaced with a look of concern.
"Are you alright, sweetie?" She reaches a hand out to hold
Jazmine's shoulder. Jazmine shakes a bit, then regains her
composure.
"I think so. I have a little headache." she manages to say. Sylvia's
look becomes even more serious now.
"Tell me the truth. Is this..." before she finishes her sentence,
Jaz quickly cuts in. "I'm fine! Really, I am." Feeling ashamed
and a little embarrassed from her outburst, Jaz quickly adds,
"I'm sorry."
Her mother relaxes and softens her grip on Jazmine's shoulder.
24 teenlook
"I know you are sweetie. It's just that... we only moved here two
months ago. Are you getting sick already? This soon?"
Jazmine runs her hands through her hair, "No, no, it's not like
that. I'm pretty sure this time."
Sylvia smiles again and continues, "Zach is a nice boy. It would
be a shame if..."
Jazmine looks up, tears welling in her eyes now.
"No, it's not gonna be like that! It can't." Jazmine looks around
the room, looking for a distraction from this senseless conversation.
The flowers on the table catch her attention. "W-Who,
who sent flowers?" she says as she motions to the table.
Sylvia smiles. "Jack. He is a friend I met a few days ago."
Jazmine looks up, gazing sharply into her mother's eyes. "I see.
This is more about you than me, isn't it?" Sylvia tries to reply
but is cut off again.
"You think I 'm gonna ruin your chance, right?" Jazmine's
sharp rebuke hits Sylvia hard, and a hot flush crosses her face.
"Yes, dear. Why is it only you who gets to have all the fun?" she
coldly replies. The two stare at each other a moment, no more
words to be said, until Jazmine breaks the silence.
"Uh, well, I have to get ready now. I'm sorry, mom."
Sylvia smiles. All troubles are forgotten now.
"It's ok, dear. That's just the way it is."
Zach's black '78 Trans Am pulls into the driveway of the
house. 'Jack and Diane' by John Mellencamp is blaring from
the speakers. Tires screech and the engine cuts off. Jazmine
has always loved Zach's dramatic entrances to pick her up. The
neighbours scowl out their windows at the ruckus, shaking
their heads in disapproval. She doesn't mind, though, this
is how it would always be. She opens the door, revealing the
beautiful frilly lavender dress that her mother bought for her.
A small crystal tiara holds her hair up in the front. Stepping
out like a princess to meet her prince, she runs down the drive.
Sylvia calls out to her, "Jazmine. Please be careful. Promise me."
Jazmine turns and with a giggle in her voice, "Mom...you're
embarrassing me!"
Zach is already out and opening the passenger side door for
Jazmine. He looks up towards the house, " Good evening Mrs.
Reynolds. We'll be back by 11 this evening. Right after the
last dance. Don't worry about us; we'll be fine." He waves and
smiles. Sylvia smiles and returns his wave. Jazmine giggles a
bit more and jumps in the car. Zach makes sure her dress is all
tucked inside before shutting the door. The engine roars to life,
and the music now plays, 'Open your heart to me' by Madonna.
The two young teenagers in love ride off into the night.
Sylvia watches the taillights grow dimmer in the distance.
"Oh, my poor dear. One of you will be just fine." She sighs and
closes the door.
Looking around at the home that she's just getting comfortable
with, only one last box of items left to be unpacked. She had
hoped they might be staying in this quaint little town for a
while. She then mutters to herself, "Well, I guess we both may
as well enjoy the night." Reaching across the table, picking up
the card tucked neatly in the flowers, glancing at it momentarily.
Then she pulls her phone out and dials the number.
In her sweetest voice,"Hi, Jack?"
"Hi, how are you this fine evening?" she continues.
She pauses a moment to hear Jack's surprised reply then adds.
"I hope this doesn't seem too forward, but I'm alone and feeling
a bit hungry. Why don't you join me for dinner?"
Another pause.
"Sure, you can pick something up for us on your way, I actually
don't have anything in the fridge to cook, so that's perfect!"
A smile crosses her face.
"Oh, Jazmine? She won't mind. No, she's fine with it. She's out
with a friend. Getting takeout this evening from the looks of
it."
Smiling, she finishes the conversation.
"Sure, that sounds great. I'll see you real soon. Bye now."
The rumble of the 455 under the hood is smooth and
powerful. Zach is concentrating on the road ahead, but
still manages a quick glance at his lovely date and flashes
her a smile. Jazmine reaches over and turns the volume
of the radio down. "I'm sorry, is it too loud? I forgot you
have a headache, baby." Zach apologizes with a concerned
look.
Jazmine smiles. "Oh, it's ok now. I think I have the cure
for this little problem I'm suffering from."
Zach smiles back at her. "That's great!"
Jazmine runs a hand along Zach's beefy biceps. "Actually,
do you mind if we stop and grab a bite to eat before we
get to the school prom?"
Zach looks at her, slightly confused. "Uh, yeah. Sure.
Anything you want, sweetheart." He looks over his shoulder.
"We just passed the turnoff to Tasty Freeze... I'll pull
over and turn around."
Jazmine points to a dark narrow lane. "There's a safe
spot to do it." With a wicked gleam in her eyes and evil
grin, she slowly unbuckles her seatbelt. Zack's Trans Am
pulls into the unlit and abandoned side road, he glances
around with caution. The illumination of the tail lights is
all that can be seen as cars continue to drive past.
Then the taillights go out, and Zach's cries for help are
muffled, fading into silence as the night continues on.
Tayler Morris
is
Lady Whoever
An avid cosplayer and creator of some
very cool costumes! She shares her
experience and advice about the passion
of cosplay.
PHOTO / Adoralane Photography
STYLE / Miccostumes
TAYLER MORRIS
Uraraka from My Hero Academia
Cosplay is the art of costume play. For
me, it's become a huge passion of
mine, and I've been taking it more seriously
over the last year and a half. For others,
it can be a hobby or just a fun way to
let loose! Either way, cosplay is for every
size, colour, and skill level. Cosplay is for
everyone!
You might know of Yaya Han (or you might
not); she's quite famous in the cosplay
community, paving the way for the next
generation of
cosplayers.
She is making
fabrics, tools,
and materials
more available
to everyone!
Thanks to her
and many other
well-known
cosplayers with
books and tutorials,
starting
cosplay couldn't
be any easier!
The first step you've got to take (after deciding
who you want to be, of course!) is to
make, buy, or a combination of the two. I often
do the make/buy combo to ease the stress
just a bit, but there' s something so fulfilling
about making it all from scratch! My skill
set is more towards props and armour using
materials like EVA foam and a thermoplastic
called Worbla, but I've been slowly stepping
out into the realm of sewing. Because of
this, I usually try to buy the fabric pieces of
a costume and alter it as necessary. Buying a
costume is just as much "cosplay" as making
one, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!
When it comes to making or buying, let's
take a look at your options:
- BUYING -
Purchasing a cosplay can be pricey, but you
have to consider the quality, difficulty, and
time it takes for someone to make it. The best
thing to do is set out a budget for yourself first
and stick to it as best you can. Check out Facebook
groups, ask around, or see if your favourite
cosplayer on Instagram does commissions!
For the more budget-friendly cosplay, I would
check a few popular sites. These websites tend
to mass-produce, so make sure to check the size
charts and reviews before check out! If you're not
on too much of a time constraint, I recommend
using EzCosplay; they have a wide selection of
cosplay at average online prices but allow custom
sizes. They even explain how to properly measure
yourself for the best fit! I'm not a huge fan of their
wig quality, but I have yet to be disappointed
with costume quality. I bought this cosplay and
wig from them over a year ago and made the staff
with a wooden dowel, EVA foam, and Worbla.
Other sites to checkout are:
Miccostumes, CosplayBuzz, RoleCosplay, and
Amazon.
Remember to do your research!
- MAKING -
Although more complicated, making a cosplay is
very rewarding. Planning is a must, but the best
way to learn is trial and error! Kamui Cosplay
(another famous cosplayer) has many books and
YouTube tutorials that break down certain steps
when making armour, props, and fabric pieces.
Many others also share their tutorials on You-
Tube, but Kamui is my recommendation for
beginners. Yaya Han also offers a variety of cosplay
specific patterns and fabrics on her website.
After the planning stage, finding materials is
your next step. You can use everyday household
items like cardboard and paper-mache or look at
some of the higher-end materials; it all depends
on finding that balance between budget and accuracy.
No matter the materials you choose, it's still
cosplay! I always prefer to support local, so my
go-to for cosplay tools and supplies is Red Moon
Cosplay Solutions. They're based out of Edmonton
with another shop in Calgary but ship all
across North America! They've saved my butt
with last-minute orders a couple of times now.
I'm currently learning how to work with just
foam for armour and props. It's lightweight and
comfortable to wear but less durable. Normally I
would make my base out of foam and cover
with Worbla, a thermoplastic that's mouldable
and very durable but not the
most comfortable to wear.
The best thing about Worbla
is that none of it goes to
waste! Save even your tiniest
scraps to heat and mould together
to create intricate 3D
details. When heated up, it
also releases it's own adhesive
and sticks to itself very well.
Don't get hung up on the
name brand though.
Worbla can get fairly expensive,
but there are other brands of thermoplastic
that are just as good! Always shop around for
the best deals, as you'll find that cosplay is an
expensive hobby.
Cosplay has evolved over the years to include all
sorts of crazy things like LEDs, motors, smoke,
latex, and more to create outstanding masterpieces!
There's always more to learn whether
that's through trial and error, or fellow cosplayers.
Don't be afraid to reach out to your
local cosplay community for any kind of advice
and assistance. We're all linked by our mutual
love for all things cosplay.
Have fun, stay safe, and never stop making!
The WªtcheR
Here is a creepy true tale to wrap up the first issue of the teenLook
Halloween issue. Enjoy!
It was a cool summer evening back in 2008. My good friend, and usually
willing model, Mike, had a plan for us to shoot in a very old abandoned
farmhouse in the middle of nowhere just outside of Stony Plain, Alberta,
Canada.
We packed up the generator to run the lights and loaded the costumes
and props for another epic photoshoot.
We were on our way, windows rolled down, and enjoying the soft ice
cream we picked up from the vendor down the road. The sun was just
starting to set, which was perfect because we wanted to do some night
shooting. About 2o minutes into oue drive, Mike turns the truck down
a long, unused roadway, and I don't see anything but overgrowth and
trees.
"Where is this house?" I ask, not seeing anything resembling a home.
Mike laughs. "Holy... it used to be right here!"
Well, it was right there, sort of. The weird tree and bush growth encircled
the whole house by as much as 20 feet in diameter. We pulled out a 14'th
century broadsword that was real and was part of the planned shoot,
proceeding to cut our way into the house. After about an hour, we had
slashed our way through and set up the gear.
The shoot was a lot of fun, and we were there till nearly 3 am! It was epic,
to say the least.
This was 11 years ago, and sadly, I have had a few hard drive crashes and
lost most of the digital photos from that night. A few survived. One, in
particular, remains and brings shivers to my spine even still.
It wasn't till later over the next few days as I was looking through the
hundreds of photos, that one had something remarkable about it. It revealed
the fact that we were not alone that night. I'm serious... this is not
fake and was not planned at all.
We shot mainly in this one room, and it was only the one photo that
captured the 'Watcher'.
Mike as the Mystical Swami
"Mike, do you feel like
you are being watched?"
I had just bought a sitar and was loving an idea to use it in a photoshoot. Mike is the
master of costumes and props, and he came up with the Swami look for this.
Keep in mind, this is like 3am, in the middle of nowhere... I don't know what we were
thinking!
Nice little hole in the wall. Nothing to see here folks.
I usually shoot many light tests as I set up and here are a couple of comparisons
to have a look at. These two are at the same angle and location. The only
difference is the above photo has two lights triggered, whereas below, is just a
low-powered front flash.
Ok, I have to admit, I never even noticed this weird hole in the wall that was
literally a foot away from Mike's head for most of the indoor shots. You can see
Mike posed beside it in the photo on the previous page. So you can imagine
the hair standing up on the back of my neck once I previewed these shots!
Yeah, I see you, Mr. Watcher, whatever you are! Ok, seriously, have to love the
specular highlight of the catchlight in its eye. This is not something I did.
We were not alone that night!
But, fortunately, we lived to tell the tale.
Proof that the Lizard People are watching us?
You decide. As for me, my hair is standing up again after
finding these pics after all these years.
