On thesurface, it would appear that Kubrick has in facttried his hand at several film genres. And yet, ifyou take any of these films, they do not just exhibitthe typical, classical features of the particulargenre they seem to belong to - or, rather, they gobeyond such features, and both their style or formand the messages they convey transcend the limitsof the genre. It is as if Kubrick had taken theshape of a genre and used it simply as acontainer, a surface structure in which to embedwhat he was trying to say. This will be apparentwhen we examine some of his films in closerdetail.When he said the words in the above quotation,Kubrick was obviously not aware that the verylast film he would shoot would just be that "filmthat gave a feeling of the times", the one that he"would like to make that more than anythingelse": Eyes wide shut is in a way just that, acontemporary drama set in our own present andexploring our times "psychologically, sexually,politically, personally", as he said. Perhaps not bychance, Stanley Kubrick died just a few days aftercompleting this film, and was thus not able to seethe results of its theatrical release. Maybe he hadachieved his highest ambition, and his work couldbe said to be completed.5. Il regista, il film e lo spettatore5.
