I suoi personaggi sonoquasi sempre situati in un preciso, ben definitocontesto socio-culturale, che si tratta del presente,del passato o del futuro - così sono obbligati afronteggiare problemi e a fare scelte che sonostrettamente collegate ai loro ambienti rispettivi. Lapreoccupazione per il posto dell'uomo nell'universo3Kubrick was a privileged and keen observer of thehuman condition, fully aware of both itsphilosophical essence and its contemporarycondition. His work is witness to man's place inthe world and the universe and the dilemmas andcontradictions that affect such existence. His filmsoften display a pessimism which is both hopelessand sympathetic: his characters are often victimsof their own condition, and are shown in all theirfrailty and weakness, thus seen with acompassionate, even affectionate eye; but they canalso show all their arrogance and self-deception,and are then the object of humour and satire.Life's meaning is explored in its relationship bothwith an ever-impending fate and with the darkcorners which hide man's deeper motivations."What message does Kubrick have for us? Man isin constant conflict with his environment. Thiscan be the social or political environment, or hisfellow men. More often than not, the conflict iswithin himself. In Killer’s Kiss, Lolita and EyesWide Shut the characters are looking for love. InThe Killing and Barry Lyndon the characters wantmoney - as a substitute for love? In Paths OfGlory, Spartacus and A Clockwork Orangephysical and mental freedom is sought but societyis too rigid to allow these. In Dr Strangelove,2001, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket thecharacters dislike their present environment andwant to change it,only the environment changes them."(Note 1)Kubrick's view of human existence is not just aphilosophical stance, but also a profoundlypolitical one. His characters are nearly always setin a precise, well-defined socio-cultural context,whether it the present, the past or the future - thusthey are obliged with facing problems and makingchoices that are strictly linked with theirrespective environments. In other words, they arenot just specimens of a generic human nature, butare also and foremost participants in a social andpolitical context. The concern with men's place inthe universe goes hand in hand with the concern
