aster-noton. white line light
a line of light, variable in it’s length (8 to 16 meters), consists of special hand-made neon
lamps. illumination intensity responds to a specific music composition by means of an
electric power control. a 5.1 surround system presents the piece of music to the listener
simultaneously.
an alternative source to regulate energy flow and illumination intensity of white line light could
be sounds from the surroundings such as street noise.
aster-noton. walldrawing
citylight prints (serigraphy) on affiche paper contain a pattern of motives that seem to be
generated endlessly - an outline variation of a raster. black plastic film cuts accompany
them. certain elements of the plastic film cut are taken of and pasted on the raster print
following certain parameters. an overlapping structure emerges - a composition. both,
positive (walldrawing) as well as negative (plastic film plot) structures are on display.
walldrawing works like a wall paper. it can be adjusted to the dimensions of the
particular room. in lyon visitors of the exhibition were involved in creating the metapatterns
for walldrawing.
aster-noton. essential room
essential room is a puristic space, a place of concentrated listening. the room is
equipped with a quadraphonic audio system by german company “musikelektronik
geithain”. the audio system is one of the best systems available on the market. it is
recognized as a reference system throughout the world. in cooperation with “megeithain”
raster-noton artists, such as COH, alva noto aka carsten nicolai, ryoji ikeda,
et al., created specific quadraphonic compositions for this system. we will acoustically
customize the room depending on the budget situation. when following the design of
carsten nicolai the listening room can be developed into an installation, a masterpiece of
art.
the compositions focus on certain aspects of acoustics. they explore frequency spectra
close to the auditory threshold, focus on spacial positioning and they confront the
qualities of acoustic instruments with artificial, computer-generated sounds.
a closed room with a diameter of maximum 12 meter is required. it might be necessary
to limit admission to the room in order to present an “essential” listening experience to
the audience. this listening room is especially suitable for inviting further artists with their
compositions or for public lectures.
carsten nicolai. telefunken
since 1999 carsten nicolai constantly works on this piece. the basic idea behind
telefunken was to manipulate the video input of a tv set by means of certain audio
material. interferences emerge on the screen as a video display of current flow. acoustic
wave-length find their counterpart on the glass screen. the experiment is of amazing
simplicity and can easily be reproduced at home. the important aspect for nicolai are the
possibilities of transformation of frequency spectra.
the latest version of telefunken are three 50” flat screen tv sets facing the wall. so the
visitor can only experience indirectly radiating light reflections.
supervised by carsten nicolai, notationsarchiv is the result of a cooperation of students
of klasse systemdesign at academy of visual arts leipzig and the renowned berlin
agency cyan. the project focused on visualization of sound, converting raster-noton
compositions from archiv 1 compilation album into graphic notations. the results of 13
different approaches to this task are published in a folder.
the 13 works are pretty suitable for presentation in a classical gallery setting. public
