HELPFUL ALERTS - WATER AND ELECTRICITY<br />
From time to time, we experience issues with our w<strong>at</strong>er and<br />
especially electricity. For w<strong>at</strong>er, HC MUD 370 has a digital<br />
notific<strong>at</strong>ion system to inform residents quickly of a w<strong>at</strong>er, sewer,<br />
drainage or other District rel<strong>at</strong>ed event or situ<strong>at</strong>ion. To sign up for<br />
these notices by text and/or email, simply go to alerts.MUD370.<br />
com. For electricity, Centerpoint Energy also has a notific<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
system to send alerts about outages. (The inform<strong>at</strong>ion seems<br />
to be more reliable and timely than one would get by calling<br />
and talking to a represent<strong>at</strong>ive who may not have the most<br />

up to d<strong>at</strong>e inform<strong>at</strong>ion.) Simply go to<br />
CenterpointEnergy.com and follow<br />
instructions to sign up for the Power Alert<br />
Service which lets you receive alerts - voice,<br />
text, email - for each electric account you<br />
manage. Many of us appreci<strong>at</strong>ed getting<br />
these notific<strong>at</strong>ions during the February<br />
freeze.<br />
KEEPING PETS SAFE<br />
As the we<strong>at</strong>her gets colder, it is even more<br />
important to keep your pets protected and<br />
safe. Bring them inside! It is cruel to leave<br />
pets out in the cold and it doesn’t need to<br />
be actually freezing for an animal to suffer.<br />
If you know of an animal th<strong>at</strong> is being<br />
neglected or abused, report it!<br />
REPORTING ANIMAL CRUELTY<br />
Animal cruelty can be reported to the<br />
Harris County Animal Cruelty Taskforce<br />
which, per the website, “was designed<br />
and cre<strong>at</strong>ed to make it easier for Harris<br />
County residents to report occurrences<br />
of animal neglect, cruelty or abuse. With<br />
over 50 law enforcement agencies and<br />
innumerable animal welfare organiz<strong>at</strong>ions<br />
in the county it is difficult for people to<br />
know who to call for a given occurrence of<br />
cruelty or neglect. The Taskforce’s primary<br />
goal is to streamline the process of where<br />
and how animal cruelty can be reported<br />
by providing a one-stop centralized way<br />
to report without having to call around to<br />
find who should take the report of abuse.<br />
There are two ways citizens can make<br />
a report: the fastest way is by visiting<br />
www.927PAWS.org and completing an<br />
online intake form which immedi<strong>at</strong>ely<br />
goes to law enforcement or by calling 832-<br />
927-PAWS where an oper<strong>at</strong>or will take the<br />
report.”<br />

Glazed Apple<br />
Cream Pie<br />
INGREDIENTS:<br />
1/2 cup white sugar<br />
1/2 cup milk<br />
1/2 cup heavy cream<br />
1/4 cup butter<br />
2 tablespoons cornstarch<br />
2 tablespoons milk<br />
1 teaspoon vanilla extract<br />
2 tart apples - peeled, cored and sliced<br />
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour<br />
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon<br />
1 (15 ounce) package pastry for double-crust pie<br />
1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar<br />
1 tablespoon milk<br />
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract<br />
1 tablespoon butter, softened<br />
DIRECTIONS:<br />
In a medium saucepan over medium he<strong>at</strong>, combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup cream and 1/4 cup butter. He<strong>at</strong> until butter is<br />
melted, stirring occasionally. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, 2 tablespoons milk and vanilla; stir into saucepan. Cook<br />
until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from he<strong>at</strong>, and set aside to cool slightly.<br />
Prehe<strong>at</strong> oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). In a medium bowl, combine the apples, flour and cinnamon. Mix well. Line a 9<br />
inch pie pan with pie dough. Pour thickened filling mixture into pastry-lined pie pan. Arrange apple mixture evenly over filling.<br />
Top with second crust, seal and flute the edges. Cut slits in top crust. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown and<br />
apples are tender. Cool for <strong>at</strong> least 30 minutes.<br />
In small bowl, combine confectioners’ sugar, 1 tablespoon milk, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and 1 tablespoon softened butter. Blend until<br />
smooth; pour evenly over warm pie. Refriger<strong>at</strong>e for <strong>at</strong> least 1 1/2 hours before serving (longer is better). Source: allrecipes.com<br />
Chinese New Year<br />
Chocol<strong>at</strong>e Candy<br />
INGREDIENTS:<br />
2 cups semisweet chocol<strong>at</strong>e chips<br />
2 cups butterscotch chips<br />
2 1/2 cups dry-roasted peanuts<br />
4 cups chow mein noodles<br />
DIRECTIONS:<br />
Butter a 9x13 inch dish. Melt chocol<strong>at</strong>e and butterscotch chips<br />
in the top of a double boiler over simmering w<strong>at</strong>er. Remove<br />
from he<strong>at</strong> and stir in peanuts. Stir in noodles until all is well<br />
co<strong>at</strong>ed. Press into prepared dish. Chill until set; cut into<br />
