As a historian and makeup artist I have always
loved the aesthetic of the 1920s because Hollywood
glamour was birthed. The 1920s marked
an era of women’s liberation. Women began to
enjoy nightlife, the movies, and jazz music. Makeup
was a form of women’s liberation because it
embraced all the freeing aspects of a modern
women’s life.
Makeup was used for silent films to emphasis the
actors or actresses’ expressions. Actresses would
shave their eyebrows and use a pencil to draw
them in a downward shape much darker than
their natural color. Lips were dark and vampy and
all about exaggeration. Women would concentrate
on an accentuate the cupid’s bow to create a
perfect feminine shape.
Silent movies actresses such as Clara Bow and Josephine
Baker popularized makeup for the everyday
women through their status. The popularity of
movies is what began retail cosmetics as we know
it today. Women wanted to emulate the looks for a
night out of their favorite on screen actresses.
I love taking past trends and put a modern wearable
spin on them. These are some ways you can recreate
roaring 20’s style makeup in your everyday modern
life.
Take your favorite kohl black eyeliner pencil and use
it as your eyeshadow. Start at the lash line and then
buff out with a brush or your fingertips. No fuss and
no need to worry about it being perfect.
Try a vampy lip! Using a lip liner sketch out your natural
lip line. Doing this will give your lipstick a longer
lasting base. Try darker tones with a satin finish,
look for raspberry, plum, or deep red tones.
Pick a matte pink toned blush, smile and pop on
to the apples of your cheeks.
ABOVE/
Clara Bow was an American actress
who rose to stardom in silent film
during the 1920s. Her appearance
as a plucky shopgirl in the film It
brought her global fame and the
nickname “The It Girl”.
LEFT/
Maybelline New York was founded
in 1915. Then later, it’s name was
shortened to just Maybelline.
I hope makeup makes you feel liberated in
expressing your truest self.
