look
EDITOR’S LETTER
I am absolutely in love
with nostalgia and
the past. When I was
young, a hundred years
seemed like an eternity,
now, looking back one
hundred years is not so
far out of reach. Mostly because so much of what we take for granted today was
given shape and form in the past century. The liberation of a world that had finally
put the Great War behind them left every avenue to grow and prosper and usher in
a more modern era. So many ideas and the inspiration for industrial advancements
made the possibilities endless.
This special issue of teenLook pays homage to this great era, The Roaring Twenties,
or as it was known in Paris, ‘Années Folles’ - The Crazy Years! It was a great time
when artists, writers and designers of fashion explored the freedom to create and
collaborate. With the events we are facing in this decade we have just started, we
might refer to this time as The Crazy Years too! Hopefully, our instinct for love and
goodwill towards each other will prevail. May we seek our time to be the best we
possibly can be at every step we take.
And with that being said, we are here to celebrate the models and photographers
featured in this issue!
I apologise for the delay of this issue. I do this on my own, and time for me has
become much more limited for my work on it here. Thank you all for your continued
support & patience. I will be enlisting the help of passionate and energetic teens and
parents to give me a hand. See page 86 for more details.
Don’t worry. teenLook is still going strong! With your help and support it will continue
to be even stonger. Keep sending in your submissions for the December issue and
I do hope you will enjoy the Fall Issue of teenLook, as much as I enjoyed putting it
together.
Till then, stay healthy and strong, and keep following your dreams!
Hi Crystal, I am so pleased to have this chance to
sit down with you for coffee and conversation!
It’s my pleasure! I love the magazine and am happy to be a
part of it.
Thank you! I have to admit I am a huge fan of
your work as are many others. How did you
become interested in photography?
I moved to Edmonton, AB in 2008 as an international
exchange student when I was 15. I didn’t know anyone and
was very shy. I decided that photography was a good way
to get outside and explore.
That must have been a very lonely time, being
away from home & family like that.
Yes, I had no family here. I hadn’t made any friends yet, so I
needed to get out of my room and do something. I also wanted
to stay connected with my Friends in Hong Kong, and I would go
out and take pictures to show them what life is like over here. Photography
was something I could do on my own and make memories
for my life.
Well, I’m glad you found your passion. Your work is amazing. Did
you keep working on your photography skills?
Thank you. Yes, after I graduated high school, I studied design at Grant MacEwan
University. Photography was my major.
Did you pursue your photography career after University?
Not right away, I worked at Sephora for four years as a hair and make-up artist first.
Another great experience and skillset. I would also freelance on photography every
weekend those years. I love to do make-up artistry too. I love working with people and
get to slow down and get to know them.
What came after Sephora?
I started working for World Management. They gave me so much opportunities and freedom
doing magazine/ editorial work, doing test shoots with new models and get to travel
around and help develop their models. I am very grateful.
How long have you been with World Management?
It’s been about four years now.
Four years? Wow.. how many models do you estimate you have worked
with?
It’s hard to keep track (laughs) but I would guess about three thousand.
That’s incredible! You have such a wealth of experience for such a young
age. What’s next for you?
I love what I am doing. I have built up a loyal client base and I feel it is time for me to start
challenging myself again and expand my portfolio. I have started to freelance and focus on my
own business and overall work, so hope to possibly open my own studio soon.
I can’t wait to see what you do next.
Thanks so much!
Being on a cover of a magazine has always been
a goal and I’m so happy to have achieved this!
It’s fun shooting different looks and having creative
sessions with photographers and other stylists.
I absolutely loved the outdoor roses & flower shoot
with Tony Chan (@tinophoto). It was a super-hot day
when we did this shoot but it was so fun with the
flowers, rose petals, and laying in the dandelions!
This spring & summer I didn’t have as many chances
for shoots as we had hoped because of Covid-19,
but I did have a have a really fun summer with lots
of activities like going to the lake and wakeboarding,
surfing, tubing with friends, & hanging out on the
beach in BC. I was also able to participate in various
volleyball training camps with friends from last
season. Volleyball is my favorite sport (I play middle),
and I’m hoping to tryout for more club volleyball
when the new season starts.
This fall I’m really hoping that there is a vaccine approved
for Covid-19 so that life for everyone can go
back to normal, and we can all go back to doing the
things we love.
I’m really looking forward to having a fun high school
experience with all my friends, and also hoping that
all the fashion runway shows are allowed to start
up again. It would be so exciting to be cast again
for Vancouver Fashion week and South Asian Fashion
week. My BIG dream would be to be cast for
runway in Paris, Milan and New York Fashion weeks
one day in the future! Throughout modeling this last
year I’ve learned that every girl no matter what has
the capability to do whatever they want, no matter
what shape, size, race, or age. It’s never too late to
start. Following your dreams has no limits and If you
put your mind to a goal, and work hard, anything is
possible!

Like most of us, Faith was struck with overwhelming
boredom and restlessness when we went into
Covid Lockdown Mode this spring. To add some
excitement to her days, Faith would do her hair and
makeup and go out with her mom to shoot photos.
This allowed them both to have something positive
to focus on doing, and helped to keep Faith’s skills
sharp, so that she would be ready to get on set the
second that the restrictions were lifted. So these
pictures are a reminder of a time that we found
hope and kept dreams alive amidst a sea of fear
and unknown.
Faith loves to do print work, and has taken every
opportunity to work with photographers throughout
the summer. She also loves to do runway, and is
crossing her fingers that Western Canadian Fashion
Week will be able to go as scheduled this fall! If
there is one thing that this Covid experience has
given Faith, it’s an appreciation for the freedom to
safely do the things that she loves to do!
GENERAL MERCHANT
Step back in time, today!
Alexander Archbold is an Edmonton Entrepreneur
and collector; founder and curator of Curiosity Inc.
He shares his journey of curiosity with teenLook.
TL - When did your passion for collecting start?
My passion for collecting started when I was about nine years old. My
family was going through some very hard times and I realized I had a
knack for buying and reselling items I would find at garage sales.
TL - How did you spot the items that had value?
I was always uniquely interested in history because it was and still is
cool! That knowledge base and my keen eye is what helped me find the
valuable items.
TL - How did your collecting shape your life and where you are today?
I had a very stable job in the tech industry, but was still collecting and
reselling as a hobby. It was my dream to open an antique store when I
retired. My wife is so supportive of my dreams and she asked me why
should I wait till then? I agreed and decided to take the leap and follow
my heart. It’s been four years now and we couldn’t be more happy with
how things have turned out.
ABOVE/ Alex holds his published book,
“The Potter’s House. Mary Borgstrom’s Art & Life Uncovered’
It is his first book, and documents Mary’s Art and is filled with
photos he took documenting the journey. You can find it in
store or online -
www.amazon.ca/Potters-House-Mary-Borgstroms-Uncovered
LEFT/ When in the store, Alex’s day is busy fielding calls from
prospective buyers and sellers as well as helping customers
that stop by.
36 teenlook | fall edition
Interview & Photos - Mr. G - teenLook

The thousands of unique items in store are captivating
and thought provoking. Your journey through all the
vintage items ranges from prints, original art, collectibles,
guitars, and so much more. Even having your fortune told by Zoltar! The
historical location used to be a pool hall years ago, and the original neon Billiards
sign is still here. Alex is currently developing an addition to the store to
house more collectibles.
TL - It’s obvious that was the right choice!
How did the road to what Curiosity Inc. is now begin?
I mostly searched and sold higher end items. I would start with one and
then turn it into two. It just took off from there! I would search garage
and estate sales for items. Now, mostly people are reaching out to me.
TL - Your YouTube channel, Curiosity Incorporated has also taken off.
You have over 300k subscribers!
I love to document my adventures and share them with my viewers.
Every day and every video is a new adventure!
Visit the Curiosity Inc. store in
Edmonton, AB at 10985 127 Street.
and online at:
IG - curiosityincyeg
YT - Curiosity Incorporated
curiosityedmonton@gmail.com
www.curiosityedmonton.ca/
TL - I love to watch your videos. You know so much, it blows my mind!
I don’t know about that (laughs) I do make mistakes identifying items, and
I get corrected quickly in the comment sections. I love the community
and the eagerness to share and learn together.
TL - I discovered your channel during the Potter House series.
Can you tell me more about that and who Mary was?
I had the opportunity to purchase Mary Borgstrom’s home, contents
and all. She was a Canadian potter, ceramist, and artist who specialized
in primitive techniques. Her artwork was shown world-wide, and appeared
in numerous collections and exhibitions.
TL - You chose to save the house and restore it.
What an undertaking that was!
It was a long and arduous process. I loved it! We discovered many
unpublished pieces of Mary’s art and were able to preserve so much of
her history and the opportunity to share her life’s story.
TL - Thank you for taking the time to talk today! Can you share a final
thought about how you keep collecting antiques fresh?
It was a pleasure! Thank you too. The key to buying and selling antiques
is to make it fun and grab peoples attention. The store contains everything
to entertain kids and adults. I believe in making vintage items
accessible to everyone, making it fun and not too serious.
Sophia Lia’s Advice & Thoughts
- The Power Of Perspective -
The Power of Perspective
Is life happening TO you, or FOR you?
It’s a question of perspective.
When I sat down to think about it, I realized that many
of us coast through life noticing the world, the events
that take place in our lives and our interactions with all those
we come in contact with as things that are happening “to” us,
as if humanity is on some sort of “auto-pilot” program that
we have no control over.
On a conscious level…we observe the world happening
around us from a physical perspective, but subconsciously,
our past experiences and judgements alter how we perceive
our tangible world. Have you ever noticed that even
throughout the same routine of daily life, you have some
days that are just miserable and everything seems to go
wrong, while some days you feel completely unstoppable
- like the whole world is working for you and everything is
sunshine and rainbows?
simple as having the capability of observing the different
points of view between you and your parents but having
the grace to understand and accept that both views can be
potential truths.
It could also be as deep as looking at a broken friendship
in a way that allows you to accept that it taught you a lesson
you were meant to grow from, as opposed to leaving you
“worse for wear.”
But shifting perspectives is not always easy, especially
when emotions are involved - so here are a few techniques
I’ve found to be useful as I’ve grown on my own path:
1. Learn to become a neutral observer
Looking at your situation or challenge from an outside point
of view (removing your emotional response to the situation)
can really help you better understand others’ perspectives
of a situation, not just how you perceive that situation to be.
You’ll find this approach can very quickly bring you peace
of mind and deescalate negative emotions surrounding the
topic or situation.
Have You Read It?
If you like what Sophia
has to share, be sure to check
out her debut publication which
was released this past August.
teenlook | fall edition
For the most part, our
daily events and the relatively
routine patterns
of things happening
around us go relatively
unchanged. However,
our perspective of our
environment creates certain
emotions and focusing
on those emotions
causes the expansion of
what we see
as positive
or negative, largely
dictating whether we
have a “good” day, or a
“bad” one.
What’s important to realize
is that your perspective
can completely make
or break any situation - it
all depends on how you
look at it.
A healthy, or positive
perspective might be as
IG - sophiallia
sophialiamag.com
2. Take on an optimistic viewpoint
Even though sometimes it can be tough to find the light in
something, if we can identify even one positive thing about
the “negative” challenge, it can sure open your mind to a
more optimistic perspective overall. Find one good thing
that could come from your situation, and it’ll be sure to make
you more open to accepting the situation for what it really
is (which again, is often nothing more than an opportunity
to grow.)
3. Practice gratitude, even for the little things
Even though you might be facing a sticky situation or feeling
completely overwhelmed with life, keeping a journal which
includes things or people you are grateful for is a powerful
exercise to stay happy and positive. When things are going
rough, you can refer back to all the good and then come
back to your situation with a more blessed mindset.
Remember, your mind is an incredibly powerful tool. A tool
that can quickly influence your emotional responses to the
world around you - so when you put it to good use with
repetitive positive thoughts, chances are, you’ll see more
sunshine and rainbows.
As a historian and makeup artist I have always
loved the aesthetic of the 1920s because Hollywood
glamour was birthed. The 1920s marked
an era of women’s liberation. Women began to
enjoy nightlife, the movies, and jazz music. Makeup
was a form of women’s liberation because it
embraced all the freeing aspects of a modern
women’s life.
Makeup was used for silent films to emphasis the
actors or actresses’ expressions. Actresses would
shave their eyebrows and use a pencil to draw
them in a downward shape much darker than
their natural color. Lips were dark and vampy and
all about exaggeration. Women would concentrate
on an accentuate the cupid’s bow to create a
perfect feminine shape.
Silent movies actresses such as Clara Bow and Josephine
Baker popularized makeup for the everyday
women through their status. The popularity of
movies is what began retail cosmetics as we know
it today. Women wanted to emulate the looks for a
night out of their favorite on screen actresses.
I love taking past trends and put a modern wearable
spin on them. These are some ways you can recreate
roaring 20’s style makeup in your everyday modern
life.
Take your favorite kohl black eyeliner pencil and use
it as your eyeshadow. Start at the lash line and then
buff out with a brush or your fingertips. No fuss and
no need to worry about it being perfect.
Try a vampy lip! Using a lip liner sketch out your natural
lip line. Doing this will give your lipstick a longer
lasting base. Try darker tones with a satin finish,
look for raspberry, plum, or deep red tones.
Pick a matte pink toned blush, smile and pop on
to the apples of your cheeks.
ABOVE/
Clara Bow was an American actress
who rose to stardom in silent film
during the 1920s. Her appearance
as a plucky shopgirl in the film It
brought her global fame and the
nickname “The It Girl”.
LEFT/
Maybelline New York was founded
in 1915. Then later, it’s name was
shortened to just Maybelline.
I hope makeup makes you feel liberated in
Catching Up With
Autumn Nielsen
Photo - Ian Alexander Photography
Our past teenLook cover girl, Autumn
is a fitness model, an influencer and
content creator.
We take a moment to see how she
has been coping during quarantine and
what her future plans are.
IG - nielsen_autumn
YouTube - Autumn Nielsen
TikTok - nielsen_autumnfit
Hi everyone! I hope you are all healthy and happy. So
much has happened since my last publication just a
few months ago and I am excited and very proud to
have the opportunity to share with you!
I have managed to graduate high school from Michigan Online
Schools. In fact, I completed the second half of my junior
year as well as my entire senior year in just 18 weeks. I managed
to use my time in quarantine quite
efficiently which expedited the graduation
process for me substantially. Little did I realized
that I would be a 2020 graduate!
Proof that you can make good things happen
during times of stress and chaos. My
advice to those that may be struggling with
staying focused and/or motivated would
be to start a detailed calendar. Planning
my days in advance and reviewing them
the night prior as well as the morning of
truly helped keep me on task. It kept me
on task with my schooling, workouts, meal
times, and “me time”! Give it a try. You
have nothing to lose!
Many are wondering what I plan to do
now that I graduated a full yr sooner. I
will be attending ISSA College of Exercise
Science in the Fall. Just this past week, I
was awarded the Frederick C. Hatfield
Memorial Scholarship which allows me
my first two yrs attending at zero tuition! I am beyond honored
and blessed to have been selected to receive this prestigious
award! I will receive an Associate’s Degree in Exercise
Science prior to continuing another two yrs to complete my
Bachelor’s Degree. This education will prove beneficial as I
strive to be a leader and role model in the fitness industry.
On the modeling front, I recently traveled to Columbus, Ohio
for a super fun fitness shoot with the talented Ian Crumpler. I
have chosen to use his pictures as the highlights with this article.
I am thrilled to be heading to Pittsburg in September for
another shoot, part of which I will be dressing as a superhero!
I can’t begin to explain just how much
I am looking forward to that. Who
wouldn’t want to be a superhero for
a few hours?
In July, I made the decision to start
a TikTok account and that has been
a blast! I am excited for the growth
my account is seeing in such a short
amount of time. Check it out to see
sides of my personality of which you
have yet to see! Nielsen_autumnfit
On a final note, I prepare to enter
“adulthood” as I turn 18 this month! I
realize that to many, it is just another
number. To me, however, turning
18 is like entering a new chapter in
my life. A chapter of which I plan to
make a successful one.
To everyone reading this article, I
hope for you all wellness and prosperity
during these trying times. With
that, I would like to end this with an inspirational quote by
Sonia Ricotti in hopes of shining light on all of you beautiful
souls. “Accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in
what will be.”
Sarah
Chan
Mom
Musician
Philanthropist
Edmonton’s First Lady
Exclusive Interview by Sophia Wojdak
Many notable Canadian figures
are well rounded, but Sarah
Chan seems to have knowledge
and expertise about everything under the
sun. Some may know this talented musician
and philanthropist as the wife of
Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson, but today
I was introduced to an educated, talented,
working mom and community builder
that has inspired many. We discussed
everything from the changing dynamics
of education during the Covid-19 pandemic
to her work with charities under
the United Way, as well as how she has
maintained her integrity and self-respect
throughout her career. We also got the
opportunity to discuss how she hopes to
leave a lasting impact on impressionable
youth in her community.
We began the interview by discussing
how she has been balancing her charity
work and teaching business during
these unprecedented times, and how she
is thankful to still be able to engage in
her many projects despite lockdowns.
Among other organizations, Sarah Chan
works heavily with the United Way and
the BGCBigs. “My interest in community
building is poverty elimination as it is
related to support of students and families,
and early intervention and education
for students. All of that is still ongoing,
and the social aspects of how I get
that stuff done have made a transition to
a virtual landscape very well.” She also
discussed how her husband’s job has
changed, whereas he would typically be
out of town and collaborating with federal
officials, they now have more time together
as a family. Sarah also commented
on how both she and her husband’s
jobs have been shifted farther away from
public events to just the core projects and
responsibilities they have.
Sarah Chan’s charity resume is miles
long, but we focused on Denton’s Make
your Mark which is a youth initiative
that she created with the United Way.
Edmonton was launching its “End
Poverty Edmonton,” campaign
around the time she decided
to form this initiative and was
given a unique perspective
on how to tackle it. “We are
talking about ending poverty
in a generation, but
who’s talking to young people?
If you want people to
know about it, first people
have to be educated about
it. Young people have a lot
to offer. It isn’t just about
writing cheques, it’s about
involving yourself in
the community.” The
granting program
works to support
applicants forming
their own poverty fighting projects, and
marking those youths achievements
in the community. “I’ve been working
with young people my whole life and
often feel that they are underestimated.
We need to make sure we give space
and opportunities so that people can
demonstrate what they are capable of.”
Adding on to her statements about youth,
she spoke about how much a learning
experience mentorship has been for her.
“What you really get out of that relationship
is friendship and connection. It’s
about having someone else who can
come in and still listen and reflect and
connect with the things that are important
to you.”
We then shifted our conversation to the
arts, something both of us are very large
proponents of. Sarah Chan works as a
piano teacher and has an Arts degree in
Literature and Music Performance, and
a Masters in Integrated Studies. She was
eager to share not only the social and
emotional benefits of the arts for youth
but the scientific impact that comes
along with music. She spoke about the
importance of developing new neural
pathways through music--especially for
youth who are developing or youth who
suffered from trauma. “It’s the only way
to scientifically rebuild your brain which
is pretty phenomenal. An arts education
is often underrated. It teaches
you to learn how to communicate and
think critically.” She also spoke about
the cultural significance of art and its importance
to multiple communities. We
also discussed the specific arts opportunities
available in Edmonton, and what
was so unique about them. Sarah Chan
works with many theatres and organizations
across Edmonton, and was eager to
respond, “I like that the Edmonton arts
scene is so collaborative. I have gotten
invited to do a lot of theatre things and
it’s been really fun to lean into things
that feel purely Sarah Chan, and not
just ‘the mayor’s wife,’ because that’s
temporary, but who I am as an artist--
that’s forever.”
We had an opportunity to talk more
about the city she is so heavily involved
in, and her favourite aspects of it. She
explained how many of her friends
moved away from Edmonton to cities
like London and New York, and how
she and her husband wanted to work
together to try to bring some of the positive
aspects of those unique cities to their
hometown. She also praised the public
education system in Edmonton and the
hardworking teachers and administrators
that make it a possibility for youth.
“Public education, my family is here, and
I love the river valley. I also love the
people,--they are very open and that’s
not the same everywhere.”
A proud working mom, Sarah Chan
shared how homeschooling her young
children has been during this pandemic,
and the advice she has for other
parents dealing with the same thing.
“Don’t be afraid to adapt and hold the
kids capable.” She praised both of her
children, both having to do homeschool
elementary classes, for being hardworking
and responsible as they go on this
journey together.
We also had the opportunity to discuss
what balancing so many charitable endeavours
and being a working mom is
like. She expressed her admiration for
mothers everywhere, using whatever
system works best for them and is proud
of the achievements she has made. She
told me about how hard she worked
while her husband was first running for
city council, and how her career as a
musician and teacher doesn’t always get
the recognition it deserves. “I’m really
proud that I have been able to maintain
my career throughout all of these transitions.
Teaching is really a part of who
I am and I have always stayed true to
that even though it doesn’t get taken
seriously in some places.”
Sarah Chan also discussed the importance
of integrity and standing your
ground, and how calling people out
when they are disrespectful and unkind
is so important even though it can often
be difficult. “I am proud of myself for
continuing to be who I am and holding
myself accountable and the people
around me accountable to my standards
of respect.”
When asked what advice she would
give a young version of herself if she
could go back in time, she had a great
answer.
“You don’t have to go so fast! For so
long I believed how much I did meant
how much worth I had, it’s okay to slow
down. What’s the rush?”
On the topic of advice for young people,
she discussed how social media can be a
double-edged sword for youth, as well
as the harmful double standard many
women face. “Social culture and images
can be really damaging, and a lack
of authenticity can be dangerous. I just
feel as girls we are held to a way higher
standard. It leads to perceptions of selfworth.”
She also talked about how detrimental
that pressure to succeed can be,
“Then we burn out because we have
been working 3 times as hard as everyone
else to be taken seriously. It’s exhausting,
plus you’re supposed to look
perfect and be polite. Social media can
help accelerate those things.” We then
talked about how serious the issue of cyberbullying
towards women running for
political office can be, and how harmful
it has become over the years. Despite
all of the difficulties that ring true in our
modern world, Sarah Chan had some
great words of advice for young women
who may be struggling on their personal
Photo - Jason Symington
road to success.
“Surround yourself with real people.
There are a lot of people out there really
good at pretending and manipulating.
I would say trust your gut. I like to
be transparent.” She also talked about
the importance of starting a conversation
with those who don’t always agree
with you and not just ignoring tensions
or disagreements, even though it takes
a lot of bravery to do so. “Be brave.
Be transparent, trust your gut and surround
yourself with good people. People
who will be with you when you fall
flat on your face but people who will
also challenge you. All the other answers
you are looking from will come
from you.”
She ended off our interview by reiterating
her advice for women everywhere,
emphasizing the importance of being
brave and holding those around you
to a standard of respect. I encourage
everyone to look into more of the charitable
and creative projects this notable
woman has been working on or take a
gander at the hilarious videos she and
her husband make on tik tok (even the
busiest most hardworking individuals
have to take a little break to have fun!) It
was a pleasure and an honour to learn
the story of this inspiring woman, so keep
your eye on the media to see what incredible
projects she will be doing next!

“ Edmonton’s Transit Hotel has watched Fort Road evolve
from a muddy dirt road with horses and wagons in 1908
to the paved high-speed thoroughfare we see today. The
neighborhood was once a very active meat-packing district
as seen in the undated archival picture with pigs going to
“ On a brief trip to Edmonton in the 1990’s I took
this impromptu picture of an intriguing old building
in the inner city. Soon thereafter it was demolished.
For years I wondered if it might have been a corner
store - buildings which are close to my heart. So I
posted the picture asking if anyone had information.
I was quickly rewarded with this amazing 1908 photograph.
Not only was it a corner store, there was
another corner store directly across the street ! “
when I turned up that final gravel road and saw it there
in the distance, right where it had stood for 126 years!
I breathed a huge sigh of relief. The top photo shows
TMI exclusive
interview
MADYSYN
18-year old singer songwriter
Nashville, TN - USA
Hey Madysyn!! We are so excited to
be chatting with you about your single,
“Girlfriend.” Can you tell us what this song
means to you?
“Girlfriend” to me is the perfect song to communicate your
standards in your relationship. To let your person know if we
don’t put a label on this we’re not doing what I thought we were. It’s a
confident and fun tune
How excited were you to get this single out into the world?
I was super excited! The song is so relatable and catchy, once it was
recorded I couldn’t wait any longer.
You also released a fun music video to go along with your new
single! How did the idea for the music video come about?
Jake Vale (my brother), Justin Wylie (the director), and I came up with
the concept. It was a lot of fun creating the visual! The making of music
videos is one of my favorite experiences
Do you have any other release plans for 2020?
I am planning on releasing more originals in 2021! In the meantime I am
constantly posting little snippets of covers & my own writings on my
social media.
What do you hope your supporters
will think of the new music?
I hope my listeners resonate with my
music and feel the emotion through
the recording. I know I love listening to
the artists I look up to and hearing the
authenticity in their voice. To listen and
know it’s real is beautiful.
Being in country music this may not be a surprise but I was totally in
to riding horses growing up. I did rodeos and would ride all the time, I
loved it!
What do you want your fans to know if they ever see you in
public?
Say hi! I promise I don’t bite. It means the world to me when someone
who has seen me on my socials or listens to my music says hello or
asks for a picture or anything like it. That’s something I’ll never take for
granted..
What’s one word you would use to describe what your fans
have allowed you to accomplish?
Narrowing it down to just one word is so difficult, but I think I would use
“breathtaking.”
Is there anyone in the music business you are dying to meet?
I would love to meet Kacey Musgraves. Kacey is incredibly talented.
She’s a big female influence to me when it comes to music and I love
her persona.
Why do you think social media is so important for artists like
yourself?
It’s important to stay connected to your supporters
and social media is the perfect way
to do so. They get to know more about you
and vice versa. It’s also a great tool to use to
get your music out there.
What would you say is your biggest
dream/goal right now?
How do you want your relationship
to be like with your supporters?
I have a very open relationship with my
supporters. I am replying to messages
and comments all the time and they
always make my day. I’m so grateful to
everyone who supports my music
What’s something your fans don’t
know about you?
64 teenlook | fall edition
- New single “Girlfriend” out now -
https://frtyfve.lnk.to/Girlfriend
My biggest goal right now is to release an EP/
album and go on a tour! I love performing, it’s
one of my favorite parts of being an artist so
definitely stayed tuned for that
Any last things you want to tell your
supporters?
I am over the moon grateful for you. The fact
that I get to create and release music as my
job makes life feel like a dream. If you support
and listen to my music just know I’m appreciative
and am so thankful for it.

Cads started modelling December 2018 and
since then her following has escalated to an
inspiring number of followers. Initially her motivation
was to boost her self confidence and
embrace her individuality and show teenagers
that uniqueness is a quality that needs to be
expressed and amplified on a social platform.
It also provided a space to be able to interact
with new people. She is 14 years old and has
a passion with animal welfare and spends her
free time dedicated to assisting in shelters and
providing human interaction to animals in need
and aspires to be a Vet. Her modelling career
and start believing in herself. She really enjoys
dressing up in different outfits and collaborating
with artists that enhance her own unique
shift from modelling to influencer
has been a personal goal
that is currently being supported
through companies reaching out
to her. She feels very blessed that
her presence on instagram has
ignited the interest of companies
wanting to utilise her established
platform to harmoniously promote
their product. She welcomes this
new movement in her career and
hopes to be a beacon for them. She
is so grateful to have the backing
and friendships she has met
through Instagram, and to
be able to have such fun
THE
ROARING
20’s
Looking back to the era known best as
“The Roaring 20’s”, there are similarities
of events and maybe it was a time
not too different from this decade before us.
We are still coping and learning to live with
COVID 19, wearing masks is commonplace.
The state of unrest that we are suffering in
that has many people in protest. As we go
through the difficulties of the time, we are
learning and growing in ways we might never
have.
In the 1920s, the Great War was put behind
the people thanks to the Armistice and mass
production was forging a way for enormous
growth and opportunity for prosperity. In retrospect
to the masks we wear now, the 1918
Flu Pandemic still had many people in the affected
areas wearing white surgical masks to
protect themselves leading up to the 20s. It
was also an era of great protest; The Women’s
suffrage movement led the way to giving
women more rights to vote in elections. The
Prohibition caused an outcry of the American
people as it put in place a nationwide constitutional
ban on the production, importation,
transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages.
This led directly to the rise of organized
crime with names like Al Capone leading the
fight to control the illegal sales and distribution
of alcohol. The Bolshevik Revolution
in 1918 created an ideology in America for
pro-communist support also referred to as
the “Red Scare” Many strikes and protests
were common place due to these events.
Outside of the negative aspects, there are
much more positive events and influencers of
the 20s that helped create the change in the
world we live in today. Influential writers like
Ernest Hemingway, J. Scott Fitzgerald created
literary works that are required reading in
most schools. Artists such as Pablo Picasso
changed the way we looked at art. Fashion
designers like Coco Chanel shaped the haute
couture and created fashion houses that still
are designing today. The architectural design,
“Art Deco” replaced the previous design style,
“Art Nouveau” with bold lines that still resonate
and is appreciated in our modern times.
This is just a small look at the people and
events. I f you do some research, you might
be surprised at the people and companies
that were a part of the decade that are still
around in our current times.
EGYPTIAN INFLUENCE
Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel was a French
fashion designer and businesswoman. The
founder and namesake of the Chanel brand, she
was credited in the post-World War I era with
liberating women from the constraints
of the “corseted silhouette” and
popularizing a sporty, casual chic as
the feminine standard of style. A
prolific fashion creator, Chanel
extended her influence beyond
couture clothing, realizing her design
aesthetic in jewelery, handbags,
and fragrance. Her signature scent,
Chanel No. 5, has become an iconic
product. She is the only fashion
designer listed on Time magazine’s
list of the 100 most influential people
of the 20th century. Chanel herself
designed her famed interlocked-CC
monogram, which has been in use
teenlook | fall edition
since the 1920s.
COCO CHANEL
74
Howard Carter discovered King Tuts’ Tomb
in 1922 which led to the Egyptian fashion
inspiration through this decade. This ‘find’
was to become a ‘movement’ within the
world or art, fashion, and architecture as
the images of the artifacts swept the world.
MARY PICKFORD
Gladys Louise Smith, known professionally as
Mary Pickford, was a Canadian-American film
actress and producer with a career that spanned
five decades. A pioneer in the American film
industry, she co-founded Pickford Fairbanks
Studios and United Artists, and was one of the
36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences.

CHARLES LINDBERGH
Charles Augustus Lindbergh (February 4, 1902
August 26, 1974) was an American aviator,
military officer, author, inventor, and activist.
At the age of 25 in 1927, he went from obscurity
as a U.S. Air Mail pilot to instantaneous world
fame by winning the Orteig Prize for making a
nonstop flight from New York City to Paris.
BABE RUTH
George Herman “Babe” Ruth Jr. was an American
professional baseball player whose career in Major
League Baseball spanned 22 seasons, from 1914
through 1935. Nicknamed “The Bambino” and “The
Sultan of Swat”, he began his MLB career as a star lefthanded
pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, but achieved
his greatest fame as a slugging outfielder for the New
York Yankees. His life and career live on today as one
of the most beloved American baseball players.
THE GREAT GATSBY
JOSEPHINE BAKER
The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by
American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows
a cast of characters living in the fictional towns
of West Egg and East Egg on prosperous Long
Island in the summer of 1922. Many literary
critics consider The Great Gatsby to be one of
the greatest novels ever written.
Josephine Baker was an American-born
French entertainer, French Resistance
agent, freemason and civil rights activist.
Her career was centered primarily in
Europe, mostly in her adopted France.
She was the first black woman to star in
a major motion picture, the 1927 silent
film Siren of the Tropics, directed by
Mario Nalpas and Henri Étiévant. Her
performance wearing a banana skirt is
still spoken about to this day.
century and became the biggest craze in the 1920’s
The Crossword Puzzle!
The first book of crossword puzzles was published by Simon & Schuster in 1924.
Cross-word puzzles had been around for awhile, but didn’t catch on till December 21, 1913, when
Arthur Wynne, a journalist from Liverpool, England, published a “word-cross” puzzle in the New York
World that embodied most of the features of the modern genre. It was first known as a Word-Cross
Puzzle, which then was re-named the Cross-Word Puzzle.
The puzzles became weekly features in many of the leading newspapers, holding prize competitions
for completed puzzles. - Keeping the tradition alive, teenLook wants you to earn a prize for completeing
this Cross-Word Puzzle featuring trivia and facts about the 20’s. - On the right is my version, a
freeform puzzle, as creating a functional “cross-word puzzle” is extremely time consuming. But, I hope
you will have fun doing this one!
• The Rules!
You must mail in the original cross-word page on the right, printed here in this issue of teenLook.
Complete the puzzle as best as you can... some of the answers are in this issue, if you get stuck, ask
Write your full name and include your e-mail address to be contacted. All entries must be received
