JAY DAS I LVA 3AGE: 23 | POSITION: Left-back | SIGNED: July 2019 (following year's loan)
Jay Dasilva joined his then
fellow-Chelsea teammates Kasey
Palmer and Tomas Kalas on loan at
City for the 2018/19 season before
all three made their moves to BS3
permanent the following summer.
Dasilva made 32 appearances for the
Robins during his loan spell before
joining England at the Under-21
European Championships – a
tournament in which he featured for the
winning side back in 2017.
He then linked back up with City ahead
of the 2019/20 campaign and to date
has made 85 appearances for the
Robins.
Dasilva’s rise was clear to see. Not
only did he help Chelsea win the FA
Youth Cup in 2013/14, 2014/15 and
2015/16, he was also a double winner
of the UEFA Youth Cup in 2014/15 and
2015/16.
Before his move to City, Dasilva joined
Charlton Athletic on loan where he
was named Fans’ Player of the Year in
2017/18.

THE
GAFFER
Avery happy New Year
to you as we get set
to continue our busy
schedule in 2022. I
hope you were able to
celebrate and see in
the New Year with your loved ones safely.
Millwall are our first opponents of the calendar
year and I am looking forward to today’s test
against Gary Rowett’s side. We welcome them to
Ashton Gate where we
aim to start well and
have celebrations of
our own come the final
whistle.
I have written these
notes in the short time
after the game against
QPR on Thursday where
it was our Achilles heel
which struck again when
we conceded a late goal.
The fans will be
disappointed, as
everyone is, but I
think they saw a very
committed performance
from the players on the
night. It was a game full of desire and quality, we
deserved more and it was injustice in the end.
It was a result which was tough to take. I told
the players in the dressing room afterwards to
remember how that moment felt as well as look
at what we had done in the game, look at the
high standards of how we played, the desire and
commitment levels.
IF I HAD
TO HAVE A
NEW YEAR’S
RESOLUTION IN
TERMS OF THE
FOOTBALL CLUB,
IT WOULD BE
CONSISTENCY.
This is a hungry squad who are keen to get back
out there and reproduce the good things again. We
just need to stop conceding those late goals.
If I had to have a New Year’s resolution in terms of
the football club, it would be consistency. At times
we have shown we can compete with any side in
this division but our own downfall has too often
let us down.
I have said it before but we remain a work in
progress. We know
where we are and
when I joined as
manager last year it
was about the longterm
project. There
has been progression
but there is still a
long way to go as
we continue to work
towards achieving the
aims and ambitions
which were laid out.
As fans, you have been
fantastic so thank
you for showing your
continued support
during the ups and
downs of the season
so far. There’s still plenty more football to go,
starting against Millwall today so I hope you enjoy
it.
Cheers,
Enjoy the game!
MILLWALL
DID YOU
KNOW?
The club was founded as Millwall Rovers in 1885. Although still
known as ‘Millwall’ they do not actually play in the Millwall
area of the Isle of Dogs, London. Since 1910 they have played
in South East London at the Old Den in New Cross and – since
1993 – at The Den in Bermondsey.
KEY PLAYER
16
TOM
BRADSHAW
Tom Bradshaw has scored six goals in
all competitions to make him Millwall’s
leading goalscorer at this point in the
season.
The 29-year-old scored his first two goals
of the season in a 2-1 win over Stoke City
in October but it is his four goals in as
many games which make him the player
in form heading to BS3 on Sunday.
His latest strikes have helped the Lions
beat Hull City, Birmingham City and
Coventry City, with a consolation strike
in a 2-1 defeat away to Peterborough
United.
The Wales forward started his career
at Aberystwyth before a free transfer to
Shrewsbury Town. After five seasons
in Shropshire, he joined Walsall in 2014
where he netted 40 goals from 87 games
in all competitions. He caught the eye of
then newly-promoted Barnsley, before a
move to Millwall on loan in the first half
of the 2018/19 season which was made
permanent in January 2019.
INJURIES AND COVID-19 HAVE FORCED
MILLWALL TO THEIR BARE BONES BUT THE
CLUB ARE MAKING DO AND CONTINUE THEIR
PUSH TO STAY AMONG THE COMPETITIVE MIX.
Their fixtures against Preston
North End and Swansea City
were postponed due to a
“significant number” of positive
Covid-19 tests, but even with a
depleted squad they were able
to overcome Coventry City 1-0
on Wednesday evening.
Tom Bradshaw struck late on
– his fourth goal in as many
games – with Millwall keeping
themselves only six points off
the play-off positions, with two
games in hand.
After injury and futher positive
Covid-19 tests hit their squad,
manager Gary Rowett had only
14 first-team players to choose
from for the Coventry clash,
and fielded 15-year-old forward
Zak Lovelace as a substitute –
who became the club's secondyoungest
player in the process.
Currently 11th in the table,
the Lions' promotion hopes
were kept alive by a strong
run of just one defeat in eight
games between August and
mid-October. They have only
lost once since a 1-0 loss to
Huddersfield on October 30th.
Of their six defeats in the
Matty James is challenged by Millwall's George Evans during the Robins'
away fixture at The Den earlier this season which ended in a 1-0 defeat.
Championship so far, four of
those have come away from
home.
The last time Millwall featured
in the top flight was in the
1989/90 season. They missed
out in the 1993/94 play-offs,
under Mick McCarthy, the
closest they have since come to
returning to England’s highest
division.
They have spent the past 20
years jumping between League
One and the Championship,
last winning promotion to the
second tier via the play-offs in
2017.
While manager Gary Rowett
has yet to experience Premier
League management – despite
a career which has seen him
take charge of Burton Albion,
Birmingham City, Derby Country
and Stoke City – he did play
in the top flight as a defender
at Derby, Leicester City and
Charlton Athletic.
SEASON
REVIEW
Words James Crawley
Alex Scott celebrates scoring
City's matchwinning goal versus
Derby County. Scott is one of
eight players aged 21 or under
given their opportunity in the first
team so far this season.
There’s no denying 2021/22
has had its fair share of ups
and downs but it is, as was
always going to be the case,
work in progress for Pearson
who joined permanently in the
summer to kickstart a three-year plan.
City have aim and ambition, and plans are in motion to hit
those targets.
WORK IN
PROGRESS
IT’S BEEN A SEASON OF
TRANSITION AS NIGEL
PEARSON LOOKS TO BRING
HIS EXPERIENCE TO MAKE
CITY A FORCE IN THE
CHAMPIONSHIP
The start of the current season brought hope and
optimism with new signings and the grand opening of
the Robins High Performance Centre. Experience was
added to the group with the likes of Premier League
winners Matty James and boyhood fan Andy King, before
fresh-faced George Tanner stepped up to a new level upon
completing his move from Carlisle United. Rob Atkinson
also arrived having previously played at League One
level and there’s plenty of promise about the 23-year-old
centre-back.
He was thrust straight into the starting XI for the opening
day against Blackpool. This was a special occasion
as supporters were back at Ashton Gate to watch their
club for the first time in 17 months due to the Covid-19
pandemic.
Chris Martin opened the scoring for the season but the
wait for a first win at home - a record which stretched
back to January - would go on with the Tangerines
securing a last-minute equaliser under the August
sunshine.
Carabao Cup action followed though Saikou Janneh’s
brace was not enough as we exited the competition via
penalties away at Forest Green Rovers. There was defeat
in the league too as Middlesbrough scored either side
of King’s first City goal to seal a 2-1 win at the Riverside
Stadium.
However, a memorable midweek night in Reading
followed. It was night where Cameron Pring really
introduced himself to the supporters, assisting Martin’s
goal at the Madejski while Andreas Weimann scored two
on the night to seal a 3-2 victory, CIty's first of the season.
A Severnside derby victory made it a happy end to the 4
4 opening month with Weimann again securing a
double, including an unforgettable rocket volley to clinch
the three points in South Wales.
That victory marked the start of five games unbeaten
for City after the international break as we picked up
improved form in September. Draws with Preston North
End (0-0) and Luton Town (1-1) were followed by a 2-1 win
at Queens Park Rangers, where Nahki Wells netted the
injury-time winner against his former club to seal all three
points in the capital. Fulham then returned to Ashton Gate
for the first time since March 2020 – the last game with
fans present prior to August - with a repeat 1-1 scoreline,
before the month ended in defeat to today’s opponents,
Millwall, at the Den. But it rained goals at a soaked
Weston Homes Stadium where City overcame a Sammie
Szmodics-inspired Peterborough United, with Tanner
grabbing his first goal for the club in a 3-2 away win as the
Robins went into the second international break ninth in
the table.
Back-to-back defeats on the road to Birmingham
City and Coventry City – where City twice led only to
concede an injury-time winner in a 3-2 defeat – meant a
difficult start to November. Back at Ashton Gate however
Blackburn Rovers were held to a 1-1 draw before Tyreeq
Bakinson marked his 50th appearance with a goal to
beat Stoke City 1-0.
And so the Robins marched into December unbeaten
at home in their last three outings, adding financiallytroubled
Derby County to the list thanks to Alex Scott’s
second goal in red-and-white colours. Matty James’ last
gasp strike secured a share of the points in a 2-2 draw
away at Hull City before the home run came to an end in
a 3-2 defeat to Huddersfield Town. A Covid-19 outbreak
then forced our Boxing Day clash against Luton Town to
be postponed, before City saw out 2021 with a narrow 2-1
home defeat versus QPR.
City then endured three defeats in a row before they
returned to Ashton Gate to face Barnsley. Much had
been made about the Robins' long wait for a home win,
but Weimann’s quick-fire double earned a hard-fought
victory. Barnsley had taken an early lead through
Aaron Leya Iseka but City’s Austrian forward
Three days after the victory
He turned out to be the 1894
City’s 1-0 win over Wigan on
September 7th lifted them one
point off the bottom 1894
of the
table. By the end of the month
they had inched up to 18th.
October brought several more shocks, 1894
however,
the first being a 4-0 defeat at Notts County.
This was David Moyes’ City debut and one to
forget as the Magpies' 6ft 5in striker Mick Waitt had a
1894
field day with his headers, laying on three of the goals.
A struggling 1-0 home win over lowly Darlington was
followed by a crushing 6-3 defeat 1894
at Bury on October
22nd after City had battled back to 3-3. This was a low
point and from then on City staged a steady recovery,
only losing twice more in 1985.
1894
Boxing Day saw City raise their game at home against
high-flying West country rivals Plymouth Argyle. After
a blistering start, Howard Pritchard was fouled as he
turned in the area and Alan Walsh 1894
fired City ahead
from the spot on seven minutes. Walsh then had a
solo effort saved, Pritchard was taking players on at
1894
every opportunity and Steve
Neville was causing havoc
with his darting runs.
The Pilgrims played their
part in an entertaining game
and keeper Keith Waugh had
to make a brilliant double
10th goal of the season. The tempo dropped after the
break in the heavy conditions; there was no further
score and City held firm to finish worthy winners.
With City now in mid-table, Terry Cooper declared, “I
still believe that on our day we are the best footballing
side in the Third Division. My problem is getting the
players to show that commitment in every game.”
STEVE SMITH LOOKS BACK AT AN EARLY INTERVIEW
WITH FORMER CITY STRIKER ANDY COLE
It is thanks to archivist Eric Whitlock of the Bristol Rovers History Group that this cartoon of action
from the 1909 FA Cup Final has surfaced, as this page from The Illustrated Sporting & Dramatic News
of May 1st 1909 does not appear on the British Newspaper Library website.
The English Cup Final – for that
is what it is and ever will be
whatever the official title – is over,
and over with it are the hopes the
Cup would be brought to Bristol.
In what remains the club's only
final appearance, ‘Sandy’ Turnbull
destroyed the dreams of all City
fans by firing the ball into the net
after Halse’s shot had rebounded
off the underside of the bar.
In August
1992, a
magazine
made its
debut
that was
exclusively
devoted
to Division One (now the
Championsip). In this inaugural
edition of Matchday, Bristol City’s
Andy Cole revealed his ambition
to succeed in the game following
an initial loan spell from Arsenal.
With his ability to run at
defenders, the 21-year-old was
enjoying new lease of life since
coming to Ashton Gate – initially
on loan – in the spring of 1992:
“I’m quite pleased with the way
my game is progressing although
I still have much to learn. But I am
happiest with my back to goal.”
The harsh realities of top-flight
football had put Cole in good
stead for a fresh challenge: “I
was scoring goals in the reserves
but getting nowhere. When they
bought Ian Wright, I knew the
writing was on the wall. Quitting
seemed like the only way out.”
Under George Graham at Arsenal,
the FA School of Excellence
graduate was up against Alan
Smith, Paul Merson, Kevin
Campbell and Wright for the three
striking positions. So when City
boss Denis Smith agreed to take
the Nottingham-born forward on
loan, he grabbed his chance.
“Every goal I score is one in the
eye for Arsenal. I want to show
they made a mistake in not
playing me. Bristol City is a nice
club with a good manager and I
am very much here because I am
playing first-team football.”
At the time of publication, Cole
had scored 20 goals for the
Robins since making his debut
in March 1992 at home to
Cambridge United and was on
top of his game, netting in six
consecutive matches.
In his 1999 autobiography, Andy
goes deeper into his life at Ashton
Gate: “Mostly, I sailed through life.
Every Saturday morning was a real
buzz, in the knowledge I would be
out there doing the business in
front of 15,000 instead of being in
the reserves with a few old pros.”
"Down in Bristol I lived by a
single motto and that was
self-preservation. My motivation
was: ‘If I am as good as I think I
am then, within a year or two, I’ll
be destined to finish at a much
bigger club.’ Bristol City, and this
is not being patronising, was my
stepping stone.”
When Russell Osman replaced
Smith as manager City accepted
a £1.75m fee from Newcastle
United: “My value had more than
trebled in a little more than ten
months. The problem was City
couldn’t conclude the transaction
as they couldn’t track me down. I
was in the local launderette doing
my washing – humble boy, you
might notice! – when they finally
put the package to me. I didn’t
need to think twice, not with Kevin
Keegan as the man in charge.”
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
Football is a game of many opinions, but
there is one that we must all share. There is
no place for discrimination in our game. If
you do not agree, then you are not welcome.
