Glossary WebTx gateways The WebTx software components that allow HTML-based Web browsers to interoperate with various types of applications on ClearPath HMP Series servers. The gateways included with WebTx software are • DCOM/OLE Gateway (DGate) • File Gateway (FileGate) • Java Gateway (JGate) • TUXEDO Gateway (TUXGate) • View Gateway (ViewGate) Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) A name resolution service that resolves computer names to IP addresses in a routed environment. A WINS server handles name registrations and queries. WINS is a NetBIOS Name Service for Windows NT. Windows NT File System (NTFS) A Windows NT operating system file system that supports extremely large storage media, long file names (up to 255 characters), file-level security, and transaction-based recoverability. Windows NT node An instance of Windows NT Server running in a ClearPath IX server. See also node and Intel node. Windows Open Services Architecture (WOSA) A Microsoft software architecture intended to integrate Windows workstations with backend services on a broad range of vendors’ systems. WOSA consists of a set of application program interfaces (API) that enable Windows client applications to access data independent of the type of network, the software providing the services, and the type of server system. Two examples of WOSA components are Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) and Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI). WINS See Windows Internet Name Service. Winsock RSHD/NT A Windows NT service that provides Remote Copy server capabilities. Once installed, RSHD runs as a service that automatically starts whenever the SPO workstation is booted. World Wide Web (WWW) A world-wide network (a subset of the Internet) that is populated by hyperlinked documents. Web browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape hide much of the complexity of the WWW and allow users to view multimedia documents and easily jump from one document to another and from one Web site to another. WOSA See Windows Open Services Architecture. Glossary–28 Version 009B (Web Only) 7850 5104–009

WWW X X.400 X.500 X/Open See World Wide Web. Glossary A standard for electronic mail developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Products implementing the X.400 standard provide a mail backbone across which users can send e-mail, faxes, images, and EDI documents. See also message store, message transfer agent (MTA), and remote user agent (RUA). A standard for global directory services developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The X.500 standard defines protocols and interfaces that enable client applications to read and update directory databases on global directory servers. See also directory service agent (DSA) and directory user agent (DUA). An international nonprofit consortium dedicated to the advancement of open systems. Its primary activities include defining standards and branding products to ensure interoperability between the products of different vendors. X/Open Distributed Transaction Processing (DTP) model The distributed transaction processing model specified in standards developed by the X/Open Company, Ltd. The TransIT Open/OLTP architecture is based on these standards. The model defines four components of a DTP system. Application programs (AP) define the boundaries of transactions and perform the actions that make up the transaction (typically database updates). Resource managers (RM), such as database management systems, provide access to shared resources. Communication resource managers (CRM) allow application programs to communicate with each other. A transaction manager (TM) assigns unique identifiers (XID) to transactions, monitors the progress of transactions, and handles transaction completion or recovery. See also distributed transaction processing (DTP), global transaction. X terminal A terminal that provides X Window Access for Single Point Operations. For SPO/HMP Console, an LT501 X terminal provides this capability. X Window Access An SVR4-based GUI window environment that enables a user to perform various functions in multiple windows on a single display screen. 3GL 4GL See third-generation language. See fourth-generation language. 7850 5104–009 Version 009B (Web Only) Glossary–29
