token ring
A type of local area network (LAN) in which devices are connected to a network cable in a
ring configuration. Before devices can transmit, they must possess a logical token, which
is passed from device to device in sequence around the ring. When a device has something
to transmit, it labels the token as busy until the transmission is complete. When the
transmission is complete, the token is labeled not busy and the token is again passed
around the ring. The IEEE 802.5 standard defines a token ring type of network.
transaction
A complete unit of work that transforms a database from one consistent state to another.
In distributed transaction processing (DTP), a transaction can include multiple units of
work performed on one or more systems. See also ACID properties, global transaction,
X/Open Distributed Transaction Processing model.
Transaction Processing (TIP)
The Unisys software that provides a form of immediate data processing in which user
requests are entered directly at the terminal and online programs satisfy the requests (for
example, by updating database files and displaying output messages). An OS 2200
transaction processing environment is also called a TIP environment. See also High-
Volume Transaction Processing (HVTIP).
TransIT Open/OLTP Transaction Manager (OLTP-TM2200)
The Unisys implementation of an X/Open compliant transaction manager (TM) in the OS
2200 environment. OLTP-TM2200 software provides an open, standards-compliant
environment for developing distributed transaction processing (DTP) applications. See

transmission control protocol (TCP)
A connection-oriented transport-layer protocol in the TCP/IP suite of protocols. TCP
provides end-to-end reliability, error recovery, and multiplexing for the upper-layer
protocols. TCP/IP applications such as simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP), file transfer
protocol (FTP), and TELNET use TCP.
transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP)
An open systems network architecture and set of communications protocols. It was
developed by the U.S. Department of Defense to promote compatibility among US military,
government, and research communications networks. It has since become popular in the
private sector as a method of interconnecting systems from different vendors on local area
networks (LAN) and wide area networks (WAN).
Transport Service Access Method (TSAM)
A program interface that allows Unisys and user-written applications to access the
communications services of CMS 1100 at the transport layer. TSAM provides access to the
CMS 1100 DCA, OSI, and TCP/IP protocol stacks.
tuning script
An initialization program (supplied by Unisys), written in Bourne shell script, that is run to
initialize kernel parameters, partition disks, and install software.
