Netscape Enterprise Server
A high-performance, secure, World Wide Web (WWW) platform for creating, managing, and
intelligently distributing information and live, online applications.
NetWare
A popular network operating system (NOS) that enables client systems to share files and
resources (such as printers) on servers.
network access server (NAS)
A hardware component that connects one or more serial devices to a LAN.
network alias
An alias, or equivalent name, for a network host name in the hosts file.
Network Basic Input/Output System (NetBIOS)
An application program interface (API) used in Windows NT, Ethernet, and token ring
networks to provide computer name-to-IP address resolution functions for LANs.
Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is a NetBIOS name service for Windows NT. See
also Windows Internet Name Service.
Network File System (NFS)
Client/server middleware that provides client workstations with access to files on a server
over a network. The files appear to clients much like local files.
network interface card (NIC)
An expansion card or other device used to connect a computer to a local area network
(LAN). Also called a network card, network adapter card, network adapter, or adapter
card.
network interface module (NIM)
A module that connects the processing complex cabinet (PCC) with the SCF for system
operations.
network segment
A part of an Ethernet network on which all message traffic is common to all nodes.
Specifically, a message broadcast from one node is received by all other nodes on the
segment, typically because the segment is a continuous conductor.
