asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)
An emerging standard for high-speed, cell-switching network services. The ATM standard
defines an access method that can be used for both local and wide area networking. ATM
is intended to provide a common, efficient service for communication of data, voice, video,
and images.
Autoaction Message System (AMS)
A component of SMART (residing on OS 2200 system consoles) that provides automatic
message recognition and corresponding actions to enable the system to run without an
operator.

Continuous operation regardless of failures. Clustering is designed to make client
applications highly available.

backup domain controller (BDC)
One or more computers in a Windows NT domain that maintain a replicated copy of the
directory database for the domain. The copy is synchronized periodically and
automatically with the master copy on the primary domain controller (PDC). Backup
domain controllers can authenticate user logons for a domain. They also can be promoted
to function as the primary domain controller. See also primary domain controller (PDC)
and directory database.
basic input/output system (BIOS)
Instructions stored on read-only memory that provide the lowest level interface to
peripheral devices. The BIOS performs an autostart routine that tests for peripheral
devices on startup. After preparing pointers (interrupt vectors) to allow access to its
routines by device drivers and application programs, the BIOS loads the operating system
and passes control to it.
