Welcome to our Formulary edition 2009. As in previous years we have updated our collection of 

formulation examples by new ideas from our applications lab. 

In 2009 we introduce symbio ® muls GC, the first product in a new range of emulsifier blends. 

The mayor benefits for you are its “easy-to-use” handling properties and its wide capacity to act as 

the sole emulsifier in your emulsions. 

Another 2009 launch is dermofeel ® sensolv, a new member of our family of oil components 

with excellent pigment dispersing properties. Some formulations in this booklet feature these new 

raw materials. 

We hope to have done our part in helping you in your daily formulation work. We trust this booklet 

full of formulation ideas serves as a source of inspiration to you! You will find modern formulations 

for skin care and hair care besides more specialized formulations like after shave or tooth paste. 

The need for sustainable raw materials has been a major driving force in our work in the past 20 

years. You may find that this Formulary 2009 is full of sustainable raw materials. In our opinion 

sustainability and performance do not exclude each other! 

Our aim is not to follow trends, but we strive to create new ideas that may become a future 

movement. Today we are facing a strong tendency towards cosmetics using ecological raw 

materials. For us it is already a tradition to issue a special booklet with examples of natural 

cosmetic formulations containing eco-label certified raw materials. For those formulations you are 

invited to take a look into our “Formulary 2009 Nature edition”.

Manufacturing Procedure: 

1. Heat phase A up to 78°C. Make sure that dermosoft ® 688 is completely dissolved. 

2. Heat phase B to 78°C. Emulsify phase B to phase A under stirring. 

3. Homogenize for 1-2 min using an Ultra Turrax. 

Start to cool down to 32°C under stirring. 

4. Add perfume oil and actives of phase C. Adjust pH to 5,0 – 5,5. 

Specification Values: 

Appearance: Off white emulsion. 

pH: 5.0 – 5.5. 

Viscosity (Brookfield: Spindle 6; Speed 10): Approx. 40.000 mPa . s. 

Centrifugation (5.000 rpm, 2.900 RZB, 10 min.): No separation.

1. Premix part A under stirring and light heating, add Glycerol (B) and stir slowly until 

a homogenous gel is obtained. 

2. Melt oil phase C. Add to phase A/B at room temperature stepwise and in small portions under forced 

stirring. Before each addition of the next portion the mixture should be stirred very well until a 

homogenous gel results. Viscosity will increase after each addition! 

4. Pre-disperse phase D and add to phase A/B/C in small steps as well. 

5. Add phase E and stir gently until homogeneous.
