DECEMBER 26, 2011, SALE SHARKS 27-19
NEWCASTLE FALCONS
Tim Swinson
Fast-forward five years, and the boot was on the other
foot as the Falcons made the journey to Edgeley Park
in Stockport.
Winger Tom Brady opened the scoring with a try for the
hosts on eight minutes, converted by Nick Macleod.
The visitors were quickly on the wrong side of referee
Dave Pearson, and Macleod’s three successful penalty
kicks gave Sale a 16-0 lead.
The Falcons responded with a Jimmy Gopperth
penalty, and centre James Fitzpatrick should have gone
over for a try but knocked on over the line, before
Macleod’s fourth penalty extended the home side’s lead
to 19-3.
The Falcons came back strongly with replacement
Jeremy Manning scoring an outstanding try, which
Gopperth converted for a half-time scoreline of 19-10.
Three minutes into the second half Gopperth kicked his
second penalty from halfway, and on the hour mark
reduced the deficit to just three points with a further
penalty.
A soft try scored by Mark Cueto steadied Sale’s
nerves, and although Gopperth’s fourth penalty
brought the Falcons back within bonus-point range,
even that was denied when Macleod kicked a late
penalty for Sale.
