We?
The Black Educators' Caucus, Inc. (BEC) is a 501c3
service organization, an affiliate of the Hernando County
Classroom Teachers Association that formed in 1981 to:
1. Advance the interest of the teaching profession;
2. Promote the welfare of the Black educators throughout Hernando County
3. Ensure that the educational needs of the local Black community are met.

Greetings!
Twenty-twenty-one marked the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Black
Educators’ Caucus, Inc. of Hernando County. In 1981, nine black school teachers
came together to form the Caucus, an affiliate of the Hernando County Teachers
Association. So, in memory of their vision, eight of the 9 founders are profiled in
this second edition of BEC’s Black Heritage Series Calendar. Carol Stewart the
founder was featured in last year’s calendar. Their stories are informative,
instructive and pathways to our collective healing and cultural enlightenment.
Therefore, it is critical that we always give thanks for the lives they lived. Their
achievements are remarkable considering the era and hurdles they overcame.
They earned degrees from historically black colleges and universities and
sometime they traveled on weekends and during the summer to complete their
schooling. Furthermore, they approached the teaching profession as if it was a
calling, a vocation. They were professionals in and out of the classroom -they
were apostles of achievement.
We honor them also for establishing an organization that has become one of the
longest continuous serving non-religious black organizations in our community.
Aside from publishing the calendar, the organization sponsors its Annual Dr.
King Jr., National Holiday Book Discussion, Black History Month Poster and
Essay Contest, Scholar Day, co-sponsored a Veterans Day Ceremony and through
the Marie Antoinette Lawson Scholarship has awarded approximately $50,000.00
in scholarships over the years. A Veterans' Day Education Project is being
proposed in 2022 for k-12 students to sharpen their awareness of relatives and
local men and women who served and of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
