Dear Friends of Encompass,
We at Encompass are so grateful to all of you for joining us in our mission
to Partner with Families to Build Healthy Foundations for Children. Our
purpose is to see ALL children thrive—to grow into happy, healthy, and
empowered adults.
During the fiscal year captured in this annual report, July 1, 2020, through
June 30, 2021, much has happened at Encompass that all of us have reason
to be very proud about.
The Encompass staff and community stepped up and got creative—
continuing to work with children throughout the COVID-19 global pandemic
in new and innovative ways. We provided 10,709 telehealth sessions, 128
online groups and workshops and 2,200 early learning sessions. Over the
summer we started back in person with our award-winning summer camps,
moving into in-person preschool and toddler groups.
In July of this year, we opened for services at the place that has been a longheld
dream—the new Encompass Child Development Center in Snoqualmie.
The new Center joins our North Bend Early Learning Center and Carnation
Preschool sites to offer programs at delightful, child-centered facilities that
children deserve to play, explore, and grow in.
The adaptations needed for health and safety during the pandemic have
been challenging for all of us. What kept us going, and in fact enabled us to
stay connected to the children and families we serve, was our core beliefs.
We believe what happens early in life matters. The work Encompass
engages in is vital.
We believe children need opportunities to flourish and reach their full
potential. We believe in children and their remarkable resilience.
We believe supported families strengthen community. The times we are
living in have laid bare the incredible need each of us has for community.
Encompass remains here to help our children through it all.
It is our joy and great pleasure to do so.
Best wishes,
Nela Cumming

PROGRAM PORTRAITS
NAVIGATING A HYBRID APPROACH TO LEARNING AND THERAPY
After staff in fiscal year (FY) 2020 had moved to nearly all virtual programming swiftly and smoothly, in
FY2021 they pivoted once again. This time a hybrid of both virtual and in-person services was offered,
adapting to meet the needs of families while maintaining pandemic safety guidelines and CDC regulations.
The notable exception was the Encompass Early Learning Center, which continued to offer in-person
education (in a modified format) all along—continuously monitoring, meeting, and exceeding state and
federal health and safety guidelines.
Here are snapshots of just some of the ways Encompass staff went above and beyond to expand their
reach through offering multiple modalities of service, all while upholding the Encompass standard of
excellence.
EARLY LEARNING
Preschool student “pods” alternated between in-person and attending via Zoom; in-class ratio went from 6:1 to an
unprecedented 5:1 ratio.
Remote students stayed connected to the classroom during virtual storytime.
No preschool meal distributions were missed. All scheduled meals were either served in person or carefully packed
and given to the children to take home for their remote learning days.
Toddler Groups resumed by moving their activities outdoors for COVID safety precautions, and continued to provide
important, stimulating play and socialization for children ages 1-3.
Summer Camps for ages 2-7 offered children another COVID-safe outlet for participating in expertly supervised,
creative play, with “pods” limited to 10 children and two teachers per pod.
“The theme of the year was Kindness
and Patience. We were working through
new technological and logistical hurdles
and yet still getting the work done. A
survey participant wrote about one of
our instructors, ‘This will be the teacher
that we remember for the rest of our
lives’. That’s the reward.”
-Lynne Creed, ParentChild+ Program Manager
4
“El programa a sido muy bueno para
mi hija, hemos visto su crecimiento en
el aprendizaje. Muchísimas gracias a
todos lo que hacen esto posible Dios les
bendiga”
“The program has been very good for
my daughter; we have seen her growth
in learning. Thank you very much to
everyone who makes this possible, God
bless you.”
-Rocio Arias, ParentChild+ Parent
PEDIATRIC THERAPY
Having previously shifted and trained to exclusively providing telehealth sessions, therapists gradually began to work
in person again while adhering strictly to CDC guidelines and COVID protocols. The ability to offer either telehealth
or in-person sessions became a value that was added to the client’s experience, providing much greater flexibility in
scheduling for both families and providers.
The parent-coaching model of Early Support for Infants and Toddlers (ESIT), ages birth to three, was strengthened
and supported by the telehealth model, as it allowed parents to increase their direct
participation in helping the child.
While many Behavioral Health families chose to move back to in
person sessions as soon as safely possible to best accommodate
their children’s needs, we also discovered that virtual sessions
offered a chance for kids and their caregivers to show us around
their home and provided a glimpse into everyday life that we
may otherwise not have access to.
For children ages 4 – 8, therapists made a thoughtful, wellplanned
return to in-person services at our pediatric clinic (now
known as the Child Development Center) for clients who truly
needed to be seen face to face. Virtual sessions continued for
families who were having success with the telehealth format.

PROGRAM PORTRAITS
“We were first time parents, and we
knew something was wrong and it
was scary. It was the positivity of the
Encompass people helping us…it was
a weight off my shoulders knowing that
we were going to get through this.”
-Justin, parent of a Feeding Therapy participant
FAMILY ENRICHMENT
While the pandemic made it difficult to continue many of the typical Encompass
Family Enrichment programs, our Parent Talks podcast remained a tried-and-true
resource for parents and caregivers during a time of high stress and uncertainty.
With a format that typically includes parents discussing their real-life experience with
the topic at hand, along with Encompass experts providing guidance and strategies,
Parent Talks is a relatable, convenient way for parents and caregivers to feel
connected and informed. To make the podcasts more accessible to our community,
we started producing some of our episodes in Spanish as well.
“Every time I’m involved in a podcast,
I listen to it through the lens of a mum
just as much as the ‘producer.’ And I
find one of two things happens: either I
find the content is still very relevant to
me now, because some issues never
end, regardless of age, or I think ‘I so
wish I would have heard this when my
kids were young.’”

“Hearing that a family came to
Encompass for a speech evaluation
for their child after listening to one
of our episodes was so rewarding.
Scheduling contributors and
recording episodes virtually was
definitely a challenge at times, but
knowing we are making an impact
makes it all worth it.”

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN REVIEW
ENCOMPASS CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER COMPLETED
In the same month that FY2021 was wrapping up, so was more than five
years of collaborative effort among Encompass Board members, staff,
donors, and volunteers, along with architectural, design, and construction
teams – all resulting in the completed construction of the long-awaited Child
Development Center.
“Every room of this building is purpose-built. It
is more than a clinic. It is built with our families
and clients in mind.”
-Megan Walsh, Encompass Behavioral Health Manager
July 2020: Preparing the ground for the
building’s foundation.
In addition to ample meeting space for social skills groups, parent workshops,
and community to gather, this new space allows children to receive expert
motor, feeding, speech, and behavioral therapies.
Each therapy utilizes special building features unique to its discipline, along
with elements that can also support individualized goals such as
dimmable classroom lights that can change hues to enhance learning and
engagement, a therapy room with a special swing to help kids feel regulated,
and a dedicated garden path lined with flora and features that engage a range
of sensory experiences.
“This building’s completion represents a
reinvigoration of the Encompass mission in the
community and enhances their ability to serve
kids and families with amazing new facilities
and therapy rooms. We hope that it’s going to
be an inspiring environment not just for them
for but staff as well.”
-Tavish MacLean, Encompass Board Past President

April 2021: Solar panels installed

THE IMAGINE SERENITY GARDEN: A LIVING LEGACY
The Imagine Serenity Garden has a notable story behind its installation. Carol-Ann O’Mack was a passionate
supporter of Encompass, making an exceptional commitment to its mission when the capital campaign for a
new building was launched.
Donor Carol Ann O’Mack (left) and Encompass Executive Director Nela Cumming (right)
at the Child Development Center construction site in October 2020.
A sensory path was created in the Imagine Serenity
Garden.
“I want this garden to be a place for children to find serenity and
imagine possibilities!”
-Carol-Ann O’Mack
While battling brain cancer, she envisioned creating a living gift to Encompass children and families for
years to come. Though she is no longer with us, the Imagine Serenity Garden is her vision come to life, a
place of tranquility and imaginative play where visitors can access joy in a distinctly direct way.
Along with incorporating state-of-the-art pediatric therapy and early learning
features, the building’s design and construction meet the rigorous standards
necessary to achieve LEED Silver certification, aligning the Encompass mission
of serving families and children with a commitment to sustainability.
May 2021: Construction completed

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
For the duration of fiscal year 2020-2021, COVID-19 safety precautions placed limitations on volunteering.
We want to shine a spotlight on an individual who nearly singlehandedly kept the spirit of volunteerism
alive and well at Encompass, serving and keeping our families supplied with critical resources.
2020-2021 ENCOMPASS VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: MELODY GRANILLO, VOLUNTEER SINCE 2018
After retiring from a successful 30-year career in biotech, Melody wanted to focus on the passions she previously hadn’t
had time for: gardening, bee keeping, goat tending, and community service. Since 2018, Melody has logged more
than 350 hours, gaining a reputation as a consistently reliable, go-to volunteer.
When asked why she volunteers Melody responded, “It’s
[for] a really good cause, and the role that I play is important
because I want full-time staff to focus on their important work.
I can pick up baby supplies and pull weeds in the garden and
let them focus on programming.”
“I want full-time staff to
focus on their important
work. I can pick up baby
supplies and pull weeds
in the garden and let them
focus on programming.”
-Melody Granillo, Encompass
volunteer
Melody’s humble nature belies the value of her
volunteer efforts. Her dedication to picking up weekly supplies
from Eastside Baby Corner has never wavered during the
Covid-19 pandemic, providing a level of certainty during
uncertain times for our families.
To help ready the Imagine Serenity Garden for the opening of the new Child Development Center in the summer of 2021,
Melody stepped up to lend Encompass her extensive gardening skills, properly caring for and maintaining the carefully
manicured space. She continues seeking to foster future garden volunteers, ensuring the tranquility of this prized
Encompass space for seasons to come.
We recognize and highlight Melody as a pillar of the Encompass volunteer force. A huge thank you to her, and all
Encompass volunteers who have helped us through the 2020-2021 year!
