Hydromorphological conditions The hydrological regime and morphological conditions<br />

of water. The hydrological regime: the quantity<br />

and dynamics of the water current and l<strong>in</strong>kage to<br />

groundwater bodies. The morphological conditions: the<br />

depth and width of the river, the structure and substrate<br />

of the river bed and the structure of the riverbank zone.<br />

Indicative list of parameters or list of<br />

nationally relevant substances<br />

Ha<strong>za</strong>rdous substances for which it has been determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

on a national level that, due to their presence and<br />

widespread use, they present risks to the environment<br />

and man.<br />

Indicative weight Taxon <strong>in</strong> one or several quality classes, expressed as<br />

number rang<strong>in</strong>g from 1 to 5.<br />

Littoral Shore or coastal zone of a water body where the sunlight<br />

reaches the bottom.<br />

Macrophytes Larger aquatic plants (some algae - Characeae, mosses,<br />

ferns, higher plants).<br />

MBAS Methylene blue active substances, produced by the<br />

reaction of anionic surface-active substances and<br />

methylene blue.<br />

Metolachlor An organic compound, the herbicide used for weed<br />

control <strong>in</strong> agriculture, at the roadside and <strong>in</strong> ornamental<br />

plant grow<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Multimicrohabitat sampl<strong>in</strong>g method A method of sampl<strong>in</strong>g benthic <strong>in</strong>vertebrate fauna,<br />

adapted to the requirements of the <strong>Water</strong> Framework<br />

Organic pollution Pollution of water with organic substances.<br />

PAHs Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons<br />

PCBs Polychlor<strong>in</strong>ated biphenyls; a common term for chlor<strong>in</strong>e<br />

substituted biphenyls; many PCBs are persistent, they<br />

accumulate <strong>in</strong> the food cha<strong>in</strong> and have long-last<strong>in</strong>g<br />

damag<strong>in</strong>g effects on organisms.<br />

Periphyton A biotic community of organisms permanently or<br />

occasionally attached to a solid underwater surface.<br />

Phytobenthos Plants liv<strong>in</strong>g at the bottom of a river bed, lake or sea.<br />

Phytoplankton Plant organisms carried by water or float<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> it.<br />

Photosynthesis Synthesis of organic substances from carbon dioxide<br />

and water occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> green plants <strong>in</strong> the presence of<br />

sunlight.<br />

Priority list of ha<strong>za</strong>rdous substances The list of substances that present a significant risk to<br />

the environment and man, and are classified for priority<br />

action; they are listed <strong>in</strong> Appendix X of the <strong>Water</strong><br />

Framework Directive.<br />
