when City Players performed their first play for nearly
two years recently. Inside Job by Brian Clemens was the

Whitwell was seized by North
EastDerbyshire District Council
EnforcementOfficers in
Killamarsh.
The incident was witnessed by
members ofthe public who were
able to provide evidence to
investigatingofficersincluding the
vehicle registration.
Acheck with the DVLA revealed
the van to be registered at an
address on Boiley Lane,
Killamarsh. On the 26th October
2021 officers attended the
property with the police and
located thevehicle.
The van was seized under section
34b ofthe Environmental Protection
Act 1990 and the vehicle was held
for 15 days and as it was
unclaimed, became the property
of the council.
The vehicle was crushed by the
authority to act asawarning to
anyone who considers fly tipping
in the districts of Bolsover or
NorthEast Derbyshire.
North East Derbyshire District
Council Cabinet Member for the
Environment, Cllr Charlotte Cupit
said, “We have azero tolerance
policy on fly tipping and wewill
take full action against those
involved where possible.”
“We are working on further
preventative measures to reduce
and deter fly-tipping and we
encourage all members of the
public to be vigilant and report
anyone they see fly tipping as we
have a dedicated enforcement
team to deal with wastecrime.”
Investigations are ongoing in relation
to those responsible.

23 HISTORY
This month welook back to when young men inthe UK were called
up to do National Service. 60 years ago in1961 the final intake of
recruits took placeending in 1963. Many will recall young meninthe
UK being called up to do their National Service and I’m sure some
meninKillamarshwill rememberdoing their NationalService.
National Service was a standardised form of peacetime
conscription….. between1949 -when the National Service Act came
into force -and 1963 -when the last National Serviceman was
demobbed -morethan2million menwereconscriptedtothe British
Army, Royal Navy or Royal Air Force.
While the case for aform of military conscription seems far-fetched
in an erawhen the professional armedforces arebeing cut, schemes
for mandatory community work have been suggested. Formerhome
secretary David Blunkett advocated anational volunteer service in
response to the 2011 riots, suggesting:"It should become an integral
part of growing up in Britain, arite of passage into adulthood, just as
NationalService used to be for the 1950s generation."
It came into force in January 1949 and meant that all physically fit
males between the ages of 17 and 21had to serve in one of the
armed forces for an 18-month period. They then remained on the
reserve list for another four years.
Most men took the posting in their stride. Not many thought 'If I
wasn't in here Icould be this, that orthe other'. That didn't come
into it. Most ofthe men said, 'Well we're lumbered, we've got to
make the best ofit; let's enjoy it as best aswecan.‘ Some soldiers
were less happy -particularly those who were newly married, taken
awayfrom their wives for two years.Some thought it was abit of an
adventure.
National Service was no longer needed when birth rates increased,
but more than that war was changing – becoming increasingly
technological. The forces needed professional soldiers with
advanced skills –not conscripts who were often counting the days
until theywenthome.
A comic portrayal of conscription was the inept buffoonery of
the servicemen in Carry on Sergeant, a1959 film that lampooned
NationalService.
But the very words continue to have political resonance. The idea of
bringing back some form of National Service has been floated asa
response to wayward youth on many occasions.
Richard Vaughanwas the last mantobedemobbed on 16 May 1963,
flying backfrom DusseldorftoLondon Gatwickwith 50 demob-happy
soldiers to areception of popping flashbulbs from the nation's press.
Everyone but him had passed out of the army in Germany -asan
officer who wanted his flight home paid for, he decided not to elect
for local release, and waited to report back tohis depot to be taken
off the register.
Themandatoryenlistment of people into anational service continues
in some countries to thepresent day under various names.

Renishaw Pupils raise money for Ashgate Hospice
Following the tragic and untimely passing of one
Renishaw Primary Schools’ teachers in April 2020,
the school community has been looking at ways
in which to remember Mrs Bentley who wassuch
ahuge part ofthe lives of her colleagues and
families who wasalsothe schools’ SENCO.
Ahuge well done to the children and families of
Renishaw Primary School, doing what the village
does best… pulling together and upholding the
motto: We’re All RenishawAren’tWe?
Agroup of Year 6childrencame up with the idea
in the summer of 2021, toraise some money by
running as farasthey could during the pandemic
in order to raise money for Ashgate Hospice,
where Mrs Bentley had spent time there whilst
waiting for treatment.
The children, who had Mrs Bentley as their
teacher in years goneby, hadraised over £330 by
running laps of the school field in order to raise
the money, as well as encouraging the school
community to stay healthy during the global
pandemic.
Here the children are seen presenting the
cheque to Becky onbehalf of Ashgate Hospice,
along with Cllr Renwick from Eckington Parish
Council, Simon Fuller Headteacher, Brian Ridgway
Chair of Governors and Cheryl Mitchell,
parent support organiser.

Inside Job -AThriller
by Brian Clemens
Opening night may have been
8th November but there was still
plenty of gunpowder, treason
and plot to be found at The
Corner Playhouse, Eckington for
the City Players Amateur
Dramatic Society's long awaited
production of "Inside Job", Brian
Clemens'gripping thriller.
Best known for creating The
Avengers and writing for many
classic TVshows including The
Professionals and Bergerac, Mr
Clemens also turned his hand to
play writing including this thriller.
The setting was just what we all
needed on aNovember evening
in Eckington - this year more
than most -anisolated Spanish
villa. It must have been
somewhat daunting for the cast
to return to the stage after so
long, even more so as the entire
play was a three hander -
professional safe-cracker Larry
(Matthew Joynes), gorgeous
Suzy (Balinda Wilkinson)and her
rich ex-pat husband (Alex -Josh
Swann-Wood) - "you speak
English?" being one of his
favourite phrases to the locals.
The heist -Suzy asks Larry tosteal
the diamonds from her husband's
safe and runaway with her to Rio.
The (first) twist -Alex asked Larry
to murder Suzy for her £100,000
lifeinsurance policy.
33 ENTERTAINMENT
And trust me - that's just the
start!
To have just three characters
takes an enormous amount of
work on the part of the actors
involved and even more
impressive is the fact that
Balinda, Matthew and Josh had
to do the majority of their
rehearsalsvia Zoom. Butnothing
compares with the thrill of the
stage and the buzz of an
audience, and all three kept us
enthralled, holding our breaths
for the next twist and turn! I
think we all needed the interval
(and a trip to the bar!) for a
break fromthe fast paced plot!
Aspecial mention needs to go to
everyone behind the scenes -
set, effects, sound lights, props,
costumes, music and everything
else that goes into such a
production. Whether it was talk
of the secure deep safe inthe
stone farm walls, or the view of
boats on the marina out the
balcony, thanks to the impressive
set design and remarkable use of
stage space, we were right there
with them. The music between
scenes kept up the Marbella vibe.
There wasarealattention to detail
and many innovative ideas. We
really felt like wewere right there
with those characters -for better
or worse!
If you are reading this and the
other side of the curtain
intrigues you, City Players are
always looking for new
members. Their current
membership standsataround 22
and they meet on Tuesdays and
Thursdays at 7.30pm.It'snot just
acting -set building, back stage,
front ofhouse, props, prompts,
bar staff, and much more! The
Players reallyare alovely team and
everyone of them gave me areally
warm welcome on what was my
first evening out in a very long
time! Special mention to Nick Di
Mitto (founding member) who
always gets the crowd warmed
up, his enthusiasm and passion
for dramatics clear to see.
While wehave all had todoour
own version ofan"inside job"
one way oranother these past
20 months, it is hoped that with
everything going in the right
direction,this triumphant return
of the City Players will be the first
of many entertaining nights to
be hadatThe CornerPlayhouse.

to Ian Judson and Barry Thompson of Art and Minds, a
wellbeing shop on Bridge Street in Killamarsh, who on
Thursday the 28th of October 2021 were shortlisted for The
Volunteer Centre (Chesterfield & North East Derbyshire)
Awards and went on to win Organisation of the Year 2021 -
with an income under£25,000.
The Organisation of the Year 2021 award was for community
wellbeing.
The Art and Minds group in Killamarsh have awellbeing hub
on Bridge Street and over the road, also on Bridge Street,they
have agarage workshop and community garden.
Ian also organises a creative workshop in Littlemore in
Chesterfield for local people and are often joined by people
from Killamarsh.

Congratulations!!
Art and Minds are anot for profit organisation. Their main
function is to encourage members of the community
(especially those with mental health/social problems and
loneliness to use the shop for achat, acuppa, tolisten to
music, read or participate in art and craft if they wish. Or you
can pop in to buy one of the many items they have on sale
and help with their fundraising.

share the same laughs and we share the same tears. We try

KILLAMARSH PEOPLE …INTRODUCING …
This month we introduce Linda
Burgess.
Linda was born and raised in
Beighton and went to Westfield
School. She has lived in Killamarsh
for 48 years –her husband Philip
being born and bred in Killamarsh.
She has two grown up sons and
three grandchildren–agirlnearly 4
years ofage and two boys aged 3
and 6months.
Linda has retired from Scouting
afteralmost40years at District and
local level.
She is involved with and aTrustee of
Wales Community Theatre Players.
The group put on aPanto in the
Montgomery Hall inSheffield every
year. This yearrehearsals are taking
place for Jack and The Beanstalk in
January. It’s afamily affair with Linda’shusband
and two sons involved
in the production.
Linda has been a member of
Killamarsh Womens’ Institute for
several years and has been
President for the past 5years. The
group started meeting again in
August following the pandemic.
They meet onthe 2nd Thursday in
the month from 1.45 pm to 4.00 pm
in the Methodist Church, on
Sheffield Road and new members
are always welcome.
In her spare time Linda enjoys
spending time and helping out with
her grandchildren.

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME
Eckington Poppy Club along with Eckington School, Camms Primary
School, EckingtonJuniorSchool, Birkhill Nursery School and Soilders of
Swing paid respect at Eckington Cenotaph on Armistice Day.
Eckington Poppy Club made display's and hung their main project
(whichwill be finishedfor Remembrancenext year)inStPeters and St
Paul's Churchtoshowtheir progresssofar.
Eckington School designed two memorials –which one depict the
silhouette of asoldier and his dog –produced insteel. While Camms,
Junior and Birkhill Schools made poppies out of recycled plastic bottles
to createapoppy field. Soilders of Swing came to seewhat the schools
hadbeen up to and wasveryimpressed withwhat theywitnessed.
Reverend Andy Walker led the service outside St Peter and St Paul's
Church. It was followed by The Last Post, atwo minutes silence and
Reveille with thehelp from Paul Burdett. ResidentsinEckington joined
in and enjoyed seeing the displays created for this year's event.
