Nnee Bich’o Nii Services (TANF) addressed this challenge by creating Apache Transit. Bernadette Kniffin, Nnee Bich’o Nii Director, said, “It all started with one van and one driver.” That was in May 2008. 13 years later the fleet has grown to 18 buses, 1 Fleet Supervisor/Outreach Facilitator, 1 Dispatcher, 2 Assistant Dispatchers and 12 Transit Drivers; a total of 16 employees. Apache Transit is showing no signs of slowing down. The fleet continues to grow with two 4-wheel buses coming by 2023. The Apache Transit TEAM take great pride in their fleet. The buses are given a thorough safety inspection before and after every trip. The fleet has undergone COVID modifications with plexiglass dividers, hand sanitizing dispensers, HEPA filters, and nano technology to help fight the spread of bacteria and germs. For the safety of the public and the Apache Transit TEAM, the drivers sanitize the interior after every trip. So, if you drive by at 1:00 A.M. and spot a bus parked in the washing area, the driver is sanitizing the bus and going the extra mile for the safety of their passengers. Nnee Bich’o Nii Services was awarded the 2017 Tribal Transit Competitive Projects Grant from the Federal Transit Authority. This funding was used to build a wash bay, a storage facility and a commercial bus wash system. The buses simply gleam as they make their way from one stop to the next. The Apache Transit TEAM received Passenger Assistance, Safety & Sensitivity Training (PASS). Jocelyn Harney and Samuel Phillips were certified as PASS Trainers in April 2021. The training focused on recognizing people with disabilities, not only physical but mental and emotional and how to respond to them with kindness and respect. The training also included how to safely load, secure and unload wheelchair bound passengers. Do you need a ride to Safford? Do you want to spend the day at Apache Gold?
