<strong>Fall</strong> foliage continued from page 22<br />
Pinal Mountain fall foliage usually peaks from<br />
about Oct. 25 - 31, with the best aspen and maple<br />
trees found along the top quarter-mile of the Ice<br />
House Canyon trail. Preview the lovely leaves online;<br />
a variety of galleries posted by Arizona photographers<br />
are all linked at discovergilacounty.com.<br />
The best color is found along the topmost half-mile of<br />
the Ice House Canyon hiking trail (Trail #198), around<br />
Ferndell Spring and along the Six-Shooter Canyon<br />
Trail. Forest Service outhouse toilets are at the Sulfide<br />
de Rey campground and also Ferndell Spring; picnic tables<br />
and firepits are available. Check the Tonto National<br />
Forest website to verify seasonal fire restrictions, especially<br />
after the summer fires.<br />
From the East Valley it takes about 2.5 hours of<br />
driving to reach the top of the Pinal Mountain range,<br />
or about 90 minutes from the vicinity of Boyce<br />
Thompson Arboretum in Superior. For those arriving<br />
from the Valley, turn right near milepost 247 on<br />
Highway 60 (just past the Walmart plaza); at the stop-<br />
