BEYOND RAGE TO RIOTS AND RECONCILIATION: JOURNALISTS
COVERING CONFLICT IN PHILADELPHIA
What is the role of a journalist in understanding and covering
the conflicts of our city? This course allows you to explore how
journalists can better understand what escalates a conflict and
how coverage of a conflict may create greater tension or provide a
potential for reconciliation and repair. Students will consider how
journalistic bias may color the coverage of a conflict and whether
journalism prevents people who should have voice from raising that
voice for social change. Your focus will be on working in groups to
understand three major Philadelphia conflicts in the past year –
COVID and vaccination struggles in Philadelphia, “To Open or Not To
Open”—What Should the School District Do, and Police Reform in the
City of Brotherly Love – Making Up for What We Saw This Summer.
You will have a chance to analyze journalistic coverage in these three
pertinent issues through the lens of models of conflict management
and escalation.
live from Temple’s Rome campus. From classic Greeks and Romans,
who saw themselves under siege by the “barbarian hordes,” to
contemporary America and its war on “extremism,” Western
societies have repeatedly represented groups of people as threats
to civilization. What is behind this impulse to divide the world into
“us” and “them”? How is it bound up with our understanding of
race and racial difference? And what happens when the “barbarian
hordes” talk back?
learn from local youth activists, and discuss how scholarly research
in liberal arts disciplines such as Sociology, Criminal Justice, and
Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies can equip you with the
problem-solving skills needed to form successful youth activist
coalitions in current U.S. society.
classroom experiences
Most pre-college programs for summer 2022 will be offered in person. Limited online options are also
available.
Your classroom experience at Temple will introduce you to college-level academics in a fun way that
prioritizes real-world application of what you learn. Here’s what you can expect:
• Engaging, interactive class sessions with your instructor where you talk with them and with
your classmates, debate, and explore the material together.
• No long lectures. We want you to feel the sense of connection that comes from having
conversations with your instructor and classmates, and working on projects together.
• Flexible “Prep” time to work on group projects or other assignments with classmates, and use
VACCINATION, HOUSING & DINING
vaccination policy
In accordance with mandates issued by the City of Philadelphia Board of Health, Temple University
requires all students, faculty, staff and contractors to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to
safeguard the health and wellness of our community.
If you enroll in a Temple Pre-college program, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination, or
request an exemption from vaccination for a legitimate medical or religious reason, prior to your first
day of class. Students who have an approved exemption will be required to test for COVID-19 at least
once a week. All students are expected to follow current public health guidelines, which may include
masking and social distancing, and are subject to change, while on campus.
campus housing
Living on campus is often one of the most exciting parts of your pre-college experience. You’ll experience
the energy of campus life firsthand, and develop your sense of independence in the safe, structured
environment of one of our campus residence halls.
Choosing to live on campus is optional for any
full-day pre-college program. If you elect
to add campus housing to your pre-college
experience, here’s what to expect. You will:
• Match with a roommate of the same gender
identity and be given space in a residence
hall designated for pre-college students
for the duration of your program.
• Move in on the afternoon prior to your first
day of class (e.g. June 26 for programs
beginning June 27) and move out on your
last day of class.
• Have plenty of free time to hang out
on campus, but will also have multiple
opportunities each week to participate
in on-campus activities or off-campus
field trips to places like Reading Terminal
Market, Citizens Bank Park, the historic Old
City neighborhood, and the Philadelphia
Museum of Art.
• Have access to a full, live-in staff who will
be there to provide 24/7 supervision and
support.
HOUSING ENROLLMENT DEADLINE
Any student who has enrolled in a full-day pre-college program (Pre-college Workshops, Summer
Academy, Summer Scholars, or any pre-college program at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture) is
eligible to add campus housing to their experience. Housing enrollments are accepted on a rolling basis
until the residence hall fills, or until 14 days prior to your first day of class, whichever comes first. We
recommend enrolling early!
HOW TO ENROLL IN CAMPUS HOUSING
Once you are enrolled in a pre-college program, you may add housing to your experience. A $300 deposit
prior to the first day of your program.
campus dining
On-campus dining at Temple means great food when you need it, where you need it. It also means a
comfortable atmosphere where you can gather with friends, take a break from studying or just hang
out and relax. The typical meal consists of a wide variety of food served cafeteria-style and includes
vegetarian and vegan options. The dining hall is set up to accommodate most common food allergies or
dietary restrictions. Pre-college students can also eat in one of the many quick-service restaurants or
local shops on Temple’s campus, or enjoy our famous food truck scene.
Students who live on campus will be required to pay a Meal Fee, which will cover breakfast, lunch,
dinner, and snacks. Meal Fees are paid through Temple’s campus-based debit card system called
Diamond Dollars. Diamond Dollars can be spent at many locations on campus, including dining halls,
most local restaurants and shops, and even some food trucks. There is a required minimum amount of
Diamond Dollars that must be deposited to each student’s account prior to their first day of class, but
parents and families can add additional funds remotely at any time. Non-residential students are also
welcome to use the Diamond Dollars system to cover their lunches and snacks while on campus, but are
not required to pay the minimum meal fee.
Required Meal Fee (residential students only):
• 2 weeks - $300 required minimum
• 4 weeks - $600 required minimum
• 6 weeks - $900 required minimum
Students who live in campus housing are also welcome to bring non-perishable snacks to keep in their
dorm rooms. Communal microwaves and very limited refrigerator space will be available, but renting
miniature refrigerators is not permitted in pre-college programs.
