WELCOME
Tēnā koutou katoa.
A warm welcome everyone to our latest edition
of Moving Together. We trust everyone is well and
looking after each other as best you can. History will
record that Auckland is amid another long, hard lockdown due to the Delta
outbreak. Since August 17th and now over 100 days later, our resilience and
fortitude has once again been tested. But there is some light at the end of
the tunnel as we head into the Covid Protection Framework (a.k.a. the “Traffic
light” system) on Friday December 3rd. Please do remember to follow the
guidelines though so that we can all safely enjoy our long-awaited and wellearned
Christmas vacation and spending valued time with whānau, friends
and loved ones.
In this edition you will see that our Sport Auckland team has continued to
deliver services to our community, from our own homes. We have supported
vaccination drives and COVID responses for our community. We have
delivered on-line physical activity, webinars and wellness programmes to
our community. We have distributed return to play packs to our community
and we have deployed just over $380,000 for play, sport and active
recreation initiatives through the Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa Fund. We trust
we are in some shape or form continuing to inspire you all to live healthy
active lifestyles, despite our restrictions and precautions. The new normal
no doubt comes with its challenges, but we will adapt.
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning how to
dance in the rain” – Vivian Greene
What is heartening is seeing everyone chafing at the bit to get back into
sport, physical activity and socialising. While we will have to be cautious
and sensible moving forward if anyone is having difficulty in understanding
what we can and cannot do under the new Covid Protection Framework
do reach out to any of our staff and/or check our website https://www.
sportauckland.co.nz/COVID19-News for guidance and help. As they say we
are all in this together.
We wish every one of you the safest and happiest of holidays and look
forward to catching up again in the New Year. Our staff will be ready and
willing to get alongside you once again, in 2022, as part of our servant
leadership role delivering play, sport, active recreation and/or health and
wellness initiatives for our community. Let’s get the fun and happiness back
into our lives and the enjoyment of face-to-face interaction back, centre
stage.
Stay safe. Kia kaha.
EMPOWERING OUR COMMUNITIES
THROUGH FUNDING
FUND UPDATE
Sport Auckland is proudly facilitating the
Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa Fund on behalf of Sport
NZ within the Central Auckland and Howick region.
Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa provides funding
for projects or programmes to deliver play,
active recreation and sport experiences
for tamariki and rangatahi.
These young people may be inactive as a result of
barriers to participation, such as cost, travel and
low confidence, who could otherwise miss the
opportunity for such activities without targeted
efforts. The funding is focused on groups who are
more at risk of missing out, identified as those living
with a disability, in higher deprivation communities
and girls and young women.
Through Sport Auckland, two funding options are
available for application:
• Fast Fund applications, of up to $10,000 can be
applied for at any time, and;
• Local fund applications of requests exceeding
$10,000 are considered twice a year through
funding rounds.
Moving Together will highlight within each issue
how, through the provision of Tū Manawa Active
Aotearoa Funding, successful applicants are making
a difference.
story of impact
BOTANY DOWNS
SECONDARY SCHOOL
Through the Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa fund, Botany
Downs Secondary school received $10,000 after
identifying an opportunity for inactive students.
The successful project focused on providing a social
competition environment with sports including
basketball, volleyball, badminton and touch as
identified by the students.
Prior to COVID-19 lockdown the school was successful
in engaging over 200 rangatahi with many choosing
to enter the social competitions alongside a group of
friends.
“Our young people want to enjoy their sport,
and have an opportunity to participate
without the pressures of inter-school
competitions” – Director of Sport
in our last newsletter.
They told us “things have been going good, we know
how important it is to stay active so we make a point to
leave the house at least once a day together for a walk as a
whānau, and we have a netball hoop out the back to keep
us active and moving. It also keeps us all sane and stops
the kids knocking each other out. Kids are looking forward
to getting back to school and back to the Active Families
healthy active
with sport auckland
schools
Despite the challenges that COVID-19 has presented
to our work within communities it has also presented
opportunities for us to connect in different ways. Sport
Auckland’s Healthy Active Learning workforce knew
that schools would still value help for the challenge of
teaching remotely online.
During the 2020 lockdowns, the team created a
weekly Health and Physical Education resource full
of learning activities that students could do whilst
at home. After the resource was well received by
teachers and tamariki it was re-designed and brought
back for the latest lockdown.
The resource was a real collaboration of ideas, the
team sought to make it as responsive as possible
to current events, such as the Paralympics, different
language weeks and other considerations. It included
some ideas from other colleagues in the greater
Auckland area.
The resource was sent to a total of 78 schools across
the central Auckland region, benefitting many
outside Healthy Active Learning initiative. The team
encouraged schools to modify it to fit the needs of
their school and students.
“I have particularly enjoyed the
Mahi a Ringa section, as this is a
professional development area
for me” – Teacher
Examples of how schools have used the resource:
• Uploading to school sports blogs
• Created videos of students or staff members
completing activities (either uploaded to
facebook or school blogs)
• Uploaded a specific challenge from the
resource to their facebook page for students
to also engage whānau
• Completing some of the activities during
class zoom sessions
healthy active
learning –
webinar
With online learning necessary for longer than
expected, our Healthy Active Learning team shared
the process of how to create and use our weekly
resource.
The aim of the webinar was to provide inspiration and
ideas on how teachers could make their online classes
more interactive and incorporate movement with
online learning.
The webinar was held on the 28th of October had
more than 67 people attend with positive feedback
being shared by all.
“Can’t wait to try these at my meets!” –
Teacher
“So good to find ways to get the students
doing some learning online” – Teacher
“Great ideas, thanks. Oldie but
goodie, Simon Says has been
working well” – Teacher
During this latest lockdown our Health and Wellness team
have remained focussed on helping our communities lead
healthy, active lives.
Moving services online and continuing to provide Green
Prescription and Active Families programmes to assist with
overcoming some of the challenges lockdowns present.
Sport Auckland’s Green Prescription team successfully worked with Auckland District Health Board staff by
providing wellbeing and self-management support. Staff from Auckland City Hospital and Greenlane Clinical
centres identified the need for a range of health and lifestyle related services with physical activity, nutrition and
personalised self management consultations being key priorities.
Sport Auckland delivered more than 80 onsite one on one consultations and regularly followed up with staff to
track their progress and outcomes. This continued through lockdown which received a very appreciative response.
“All thanks to you and the team for the push needed
and the accountability provided”
“I have had some victories lately! Scale victory – 5kg
loss and my HbA1c (long standing blood glucose) has
dropped from 57 to 36 AND my doctor has taken me
off Metformin medication”
“The regular support has kept me sticking to my
