33 REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE: MUSIC AND SOCIAL ISSUES (PROFILE SERIES)<br />
Taught by: David Heitler-Klevans<br />
We will explore connections between music, political issues, <strong>and</strong> movements for social change.<br />
We will also think critically about the varying effectiveness <strong>of</strong> political music, focusing on<br />
individual artists (<strong>and</strong> groups) who have created a significant body <strong>of</strong> work related to social justice<br />
<strong>and</strong> political protest. Register for all three courses in the series at registration, <strong>and</strong> receive a<br />
more than 15 percent discount on the total. You can also register for courses individually.<br />

SECTION I: BUFFY SAINTE-MARIE<br />
This session on the life <strong>and</strong> work <strong>of</strong> Buffy Sainte-Marie will focus on her topical/political/protest<br />
music, from her earliest work as one <strong>of</strong> the first well-known Native American musicians to her<br />
recent material.<br />

SECTION II: VICTOR JARA<br />
In this session, we’ll explore the life <strong>and</strong> work <strong>of</strong> Victor Jara (<strong>of</strong> Chile). We’ll focus on his powerful<br />
revolutionary music, from the late 1960s to 1973 when his life was cut short during the coup that<br />
toppled the Allende government <strong>and</strong> began the Pinochet dictatorship.<br />

SECTION III: SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK<br />
This session on the life <strong>and</strong> work <strong>of</strong> Sweet Honey in the Rock will focus on their topical/political/<br />
protest music, from their beginnings in 1973 to their more recent work. Through many changes in<br />
membership, Sweet Honey has created a powerful body <strong>of</strong> a capella music rooted in rich African<br />
American traditions <strong>and</strong> struggles.<br />
