fore. Weekly themes explore the visual and emotional responses to sun and sunlight, moon and
STRANGE PIECES OF PARADISE: THE MEANING OF IT ALL (BOOK DISCUSSION)
Taught by: Cole Vans
What does the culture of violence against women look like in America? This course will utilize
Terri Jentz’s novel, Strange Piece of Paradise, to examine just that. This course will take the form
of a book discussion group with a critical analysis bent. Her compelling read is nothing short of
a masterpiece of language, storytelling, and the revelation of what happens to women within
communities unable to express what they see and hear. Fear has a stronghold on many a voice,
and the author of this book captures that concept very well. Please join in this open discussion to
better see what goes on across this great country, and even still, against the feminine.
about online learning
Online learning is a fun, enjoyable and very productive way to learn. Millions of
people are learning online each year. You will engage with the instructor and
other participants. You will get to know your instructor and other participants. You
may make friends. It’s easy. It’s fun.
PARTICIPATE WHEN YOU WANT
• You can participate any time of day or evening. The online classroom is open
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
• There are no live real-time requirements or meetings. You decide when you
participate.
• For the best learning, participants should log into the course on 2-3 different
days of the week.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
For each unit, you will:
• Access the online readings
• Listen to the audio presentation for the Unit and view the slides
• Take a self-quiz to see how much you have learned
• Engage in written online discussion with your instructor and other
participants
For best learning, you should make one or more comments at 2-3 different times
each day. The content (readings, audio lectures, slides) and self-quizzes are
accessible for the entire course, so you can work ahead, or go back and review
again, at your convenience.
REQUIREMENTS
To successfully complete courses, you should do the following:
• Make at least one comment every week in the discussion. The comment
should show thought and be more substantive than just “Yes, I agree.” There
is no length required for comments. Replies to other comments, responses
to other participants, count as comments (in most cases your instructor
values replies and responses as comments). Questions and online discussion
facilitative comments also count as well as long as there is some thought to
them.
• Take every Unit self-quiz for the course and get at least an 80% score. You
may retake any self-quiz as often as you need to get to the 80% level.
BENEFITS OF TEST PREP COURSES
Taking a test preparation course has multiple benefits. You’ll gain familiarity
with the test and you’ll discover where your strengths and weakness are. Gain
confidence as you learn tools to approach the test and reduce your anxiety on test
day. Our classes are designed by current and former test item writers with years of
experience‒including experience writing questions for these same tests!
Prepare for your test day by taking one of the test preparation courses offered by
the Office of Non-Credit and Continuing Education at Temple University. College
entrance and graduate exam test prep courses are offered for:
• Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
• Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)
• Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
