helping out WAYS YOU CAN help others this holiday season Adopt a family or a senior JFCS of the Suncoast invites the community to donate holiday gifts to benefit underserved families and children, as well as seniors through the Adopta-Senior program. Interested donors can contact Karen Pharo at kpharo@jfcs-cares.org to receive more information on wish lists and needs of families, children and seniors. JFCS is accepting Christmas gifts for families, children and seniors until Friday, Dec. 10. They have over 300 children and 150 seniors to adopt out for the holidays. For the families: We provide the clothing and shoe size and the top three wish list items for each child and ask for a $50 gift card for the parent or guarding for groceries for the holidays. Christmas gifts can be dropped off at 2688 Fruitville Rd. (JFCS) at the loading dock between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Email Karen to set up an appointment for drop-off (to ensure a member of their team will be present). Clearly tag all gifts with the name and age of the child and place the gifts in a gift bag. Gifts should not be wrapped —they will be delivering the gifts in gift bags for easier transport. Make sure you include a note with your name, address and the approximate value of the gifts so they can issue you a charitable donation receipt. For the seniors: They ask for a gift bag for each of the seniors in isolation that includes: Hard Candy, Stamps, Notepad/Pen, Hand Lotion/Sanitizer, Chap stick, Gift Cards to Publix/Walgreens/Wal-Mart, no skid socks, tissues and magnets. Hosts Shine A Little Light Event on Dec. 9 Coffrin Jewelers has Shine A Little Light Event on Dec. 9 benefiting Sarasota Memorial Hospital Pediatric Unit and Breast Cancer Health Center in conjunction with Serving Spoon from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m at Coffrin Jewelers and Serving Spoon. The event will include a customer appreciation party and a Putt-Putt Golf Tournament for those who would like to participate and support Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation (SMHF). Tickets will be available for purchase to have an opportunity to putt to win a Rolex Watch at Serving Spoon and/ or a Breast Cancer Awareness Diamond Sapphire Pendant at Coffrin Jewelers. The initial round of putt-putt for the Rolex Watch will be held at Serving Spoon with the final playoffs held at Coffrin Jewelers. At the last hour of the event, 8 p.m; Coffrin Jewelers will host both prizes the Rolex and Pendant Necklace putt-putt playoffs to see who the winners are. Help fulfill the gift lists of foster & other vulnerable children During the holidays, while most families are eagerly anticipating get-togethers and the exchange of gifts, children in the state care system may not have a celebration to look forward to and, additionally, may be experiencing the stress and sadness of being displaced from their homes. To help foster and other vulnerable children in Florida’s Circuit 12 feel the joy of the holidays, Safe Children Coalition is implementing its Angels program, through which community members can fulfill gift lists of foster and other vulnerable children. Gifts are collected at all of its office locations in its three-county area of service; additionally, community members can donate through Safe Children Coalition’s website. Volunteers will shop for the children. Gifts are being accepted through December 17. The Safe Children Coalition’s Angels program works to ensure that foster and other vulnerable children in Florida’s Circuit 12 (which encompasses Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties) feel the warmth of the holiday season through the donation of gifts from caring members of the community. The program matches sponsors to children’s gift wish lists.
