The roads of Australia are busier and busier and, as a road user who intends to tow a camper/caravan, it is your responsibility to know how to do so safely. Towing safely is not limited to when you are on the road, your pre-planning is just as important. This can include: • Understanding your vehicle’s towing capacity • The weight/size of your caravan/RV • How to load it appropriately with all the belongings you intend to bring with you. Communications Tips When venturing into the regions of South Australia, remember that you don't need to go off road to lose mobile reception. In the event of an unforeseen happening, or if you want to keep in touch with friends and family, it is important to consider having communication equipment that will give you security in remote locations. Some options to consider are: • Mobile signal boosters. A mobile signal booster is a compact, hidden away system that acts like a mobile phone tower in your car. It can amplify your signal, taking the SOS signal from ½ to 2 bars of solid stable signal. • UHF radio. The latest UHF radios (walkie talkie) are compact and easy to use, and you don’t even need a bull bar for the antenna. Modern radios also have filters to block out those undesirable conversations from children’s ears. • Satellite phones. The ultimate safety tool, a satellite phone is your link to civilisation. There are a variety of options on the market. Some phones will only use one satellite while others will have 66 satellites in their constellation.
