Welcome to the season of lighting

this week and only
half of our troubles
were related to the
holidays.
Putting lights on the
exterior of the house
went better than it has
in many years, thanks
to better labeling of
the strands last year
and to help from our
son in maneuvering
around the roof.
My husband’s collection
of Dickens Village
houses and accessories went up rather
easily, though I’m struggling with a couple
of the remote-control outlets that come on,
but then immediately switch back off.
I’ve only put up one small tree thus far,
and of the five strands of lights, two had
major sections in the middle that went
dark. Not one to give up easily, I bundled
those sections with a zip tie and hid them
in the center of the tree.
While I was dealing with holiday lights,
my husband found his own frustrations in
all the bulbs burned out around the house.
Bathroom vanity. Great room recessed
lights. Basement perimeter lighting.
By the end of the day he had everything
functioning again with replacement bulbs
from the basement and a trip to the hardware
store.
Until bedtime.
That’s when the bulb in the laundry
room blinked out. With the step ladder still
handy, we decided to get it fixed right away.
Except the bulb slipped from Jeff’s hand
and shattered into hundreds of pieces all
across the rug and floor.
The mess is cleaned up, but finishing the
project requires another trip to the store.
Maybe tonight.

Christmas gnomes have begun to quite a popular Christmas trend this
year and customers will have the
chance to make their very own.
“It’s something people have just
decided they really liked and they’re
all over the place now,” Debbie said.
“I’ll have some made and people can
come make their own, too. A couple
weeks ago we actually had a group of
10 third-graders come make them for
a birthday party, so that was a lot of
fun.”
Anyone interested in building their
own gnome or wreath can simply
contact The Christmas Grainery via
Facebook or give them a call to set up
an appointment.
Otherwise the Grainery is open
from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturdays or
weekdays by appointment.
In addition to the gnomes and
wreaths there is a selection of woodworking,
crafts and honey from local
vendors for sale in the shop.
And, of course, a nice selection of
live Christmas trees.
They’re stocked up on Canaan and
Fraser firs as well as some white and
red pines. They consider themselves
lucky to be able secure fresh trees this
year.
“The drought hit everyone really
hard and tree are pretty hard to come
by this year, so we feel fortunate we
have those my husband cut down
from the east side of the state, so
they’re good and fresh and then the
Frasers came from Wisconsin,” Debbie
said. “We feel fortunate we were
able to get what we did and we feel
good about the ones we have. They
look nice.”
They’re still waiting on their own
stock of Christmas trees to grow a
few more feet before adding them to
the mix.
Debbie noted that they have maybe
five that would be tall enough at
this point, but they’ll wait until they
have more of an abundance.
Until then they’ll simply enjoy the
smiles they see from every visitor to
the Grainery.
“It’s fun to see people come back
and be able to reconnect with the
community,” Debbie said.
Those connections are made

O Tannenbaum
Farm near Milford offers real
trees for Christmas
For some it’s a holiday tradition like no
other.
Choosing and chopping a real Christmas
tree to take home is at the top of many
to-do lists this time of year and those looking
for the perfect pine or fir may need to do so as
soon as possible.
Less than ideal growing conditions in recent
years as well as an uptick in demand around
the country means live Christmas trees are in
short supply many places.
Tannenbaum Christmas Trees outside Milford
is ready to meet the demand starting
Thanksgiving weekend, but the selection may
dwindle rapidly after that.
“Last year we were only open two weekends
before we had to stop to keep enough inventory,”
said Nathaniel Stover, owner of the tree
farm. “We’ve had so many people call already
this year and a lot of people have tagged a lot
of trees — it’s first come, first served — so there
may not be many left after the first weekend.
It’s going to be a busy Saturday.”
Tannenbaum will first open the day after
Thanksgiving, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. after which
they’ll be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and
11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday.
Visitors can choose from a variety of Fraser fir,

and white pine.
Stover said he’ll also be making wreaths this
year and has been experimenting with different
ideas along those lines.
“I’ve experimented with some more artistic
and maybe more natural looking ideas and
they’ve worked out pretty good,” Stover said.
Trying something new and adding it to what
is a traditional Christmas outing for many
families keeps Stover looking forward to another
year at the tree farm.
“The family traditions are what get me,
they’re the best reason to do this,” Stover said.
“If I didn’t have a Christmas tree farm I don’t
know what I’d do about my own Christmas
tree each year!” F

Sinterklaas
IS COMING TO TOWN
Celebrating Dutch heritage this
holiday season in Orange City
Celebrate the season with Sinterklaas.
Young students are invited to enjoy
some fun activities, join a parade and
learn a little history along the way during Sinterklaas
Dag in Orange City.
Held the first Saturday of every December for
the more than 30 years, the event is hosted by
the Dutch Heritage Boosters and is scheduled
for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4.
“The festivities start at Stadscentrum on Central
Avenue in downtown Orange City where
Sinterklaas and Piet will come by horse-drawn
wagon,” said Randy Van Peursem of the Dutch
Heritage Boosters. “We’ll have a brass quintet
and town crier leading the parade and the children
will follow them down to Town Hall.”
There the visitors — the event is targeted
toward children from prekindergarten through
fourth grade — will first enjoy a series of puppet
shows after a brief introduction of Sinterklaas.
“Puppet shows are very big in the Netherlands
and we’ll have three of those. One will
tell the history of Sinterklaas and we’ll have
two other skits after that,” Van Peursem said.
The information helps provide some clarity
on the historical figure of Sinterklaas.
“There can be some confusion between
Sinterklaas Dag and Christmas,” Van Peursem
said. “Sinterklaas is a secular holiday marking
the birthday of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint
of children. In the Netherlands they celebrate
his birthday on Dec. 6 and then Christmas as a
religious holiday on Christmas Day like we do.”
After the puppet show it’s time for some fun
and games.
Prekindergarten students will play “drop the
carrot” while first and second-grade students
try a memory game and the third and fourthgraders
play a Dutch game that can be basically
translated as “shooting nuts.”
“It’s like marbles meets shuffleboard and is
a game they play in the Netherlands. We’ll be
using fake nuts just in case anyone has any allergies,”
Van Peursem said.
There will also be several coloring stations
set up to enjoy and everyone leaves with a
chocolate medallion after serenading Sinterklaas
with a farewell song.
Promoting and preserving the Dutch heritage
of Orange City is at the core of the group’s
mission and Van Peursem enjoys seeing the
community come together every year.
“We have high school volunteers that participated
when they were young students and
a people on our board that participated in
Sinterklaas Dag as kids,” Van Peursem said. “I
love that it is multigenerational, brings the
community together and teaches the history
lesson of a true historical figure. Of course you
don’t have to be Dutch to enjoy the event! We
invite everyone from pre-K through fourth
grade and from the big smiles on their faces we

The tree farm offers
a huge dose of
positivity.
Justin Pritts
Let the Christmas spirit ring. It’s
time to rock around the Christmas
tree.
But before the rockin’ and rollin’
can start, you have to put up the
Christmas tree first.
Country Pines Tree Farm in Marcus,
IA, is ready to get you rocking with
your very own Christmas tree.
The first day of the season for the
farm is set for Wednesday, Nov. 24.
They’ll be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
They are closed for Thanksgiving and
then they’ll be open from 9-5 p.m.
on Friday and Saturday followed by
1-5 p.m. on Sunday.
The farm’s roots go back more
than two decades. It was started by
Neal and Marie Bork 26 years ago,
but this year a new family stepped up
to take over the running of the farm.
“[Neal and Marie] decided to
retire and their intent was to either
sell or close after last season. I have
been buying trees from them since
I was a little kid with my family and
obviously my entire married life. It
seemed like a tragedy to see such a

ensure we have a strong inventory, so
we are sitting pretty well this year. I
would strongly encourage people to
get out early to get their live trees, as
there is limited inventory throughout,”
Justin said. “We will have to
survey the field after the weekend to
see how we are doing for inventory.
We can’t sell too many in a single
year or we risk being open next year!”
Despite the challenges, Justin can’t
wait for this holiday season.
“I am the county emergency manager
as my full time job. I find that
job rewarding, but it brings a lot of
negativity with it! I find that I work
in the worst, plan for the worst, think
about the worst, etc. The tree farm offers
a huge dose of positivity,” Justin
said. “People come because they are
with their family that is home for the
holidays. They have smiles on their
faces, they truly want to be there!
That is a battery recharge for me!” F

Winter Nights, Holiday Lights
It’s a night straight out of a
Hallmark.
Christmas carolers, horsedrawn
wagon rides, tubas
playing Christmas carols
and kids visiting with Santa
will be the view down the
street in downtown Estherville
during their Winter
Nights, Holiday Lights
celebration on Thursday
evening, Dec. 2.
It’s a beautiful night that
happens every year during
Estherville’s Winter Nights
& Holidays Lights featuring
Tuba Christmas. This year
the event kicks off at 5 p.m.
and will run until 7 p.m.
The event is free to everyone
with the only cost to you
being what you decide to
purchase at the retail shops.
For the children, it’s
the first night that Santa’s
House is open in downtown
Estherville, and there is usually
a line of excited children
waiting with their Christmas
lists.
In addition to carolers,
eventgoers can tune their
ears to tubas. There will be a
total of two Tuba Christmas
concerts during the evening.
The first show is at 6 p.m.
and will take place at the
Estherville United Methodist
Church and the 7 p.m.
show will take place at the
Estherville Public Library.
The last performance will
include a singalong and all
voices are invited to join
in on the singing of some
Christmas carols.

Hull Winterfest
Find your way to Winterfest
and you’ll find your way to
holiday fun.
The popular event is organized
every year by the Hull
Area Chamber of Commerce
and includes one-stop shopping
at the vendor fair, a visit
from Santa and Mrs. Claus, as
well as a ceremonial lighting
of the Christmas lights at Hubbling
Park and much more.
“One thing that has been
a constant at least for many
years is the vendor fair. The
Winterfest vendor fair is huge,
and so popular that Santa and
Mrs. Claus even attend,” said
Amy Kelley, executive director
for the Chamber of Commerce.
“This year we have gift wrapping
available. The Hull Kids’
Club will be wrapping gifts as
a fundraiser for their organization.”
This year has a couple new
items on the agenda as Habitat
for Humanity will hold their
Hull home dedication, the
local legion is bringing back
Bingo Night, Hull Christian is
hosting a Tour of Homes and
the town’s new restaurant, The
Grain House, will be open.
