Bandit and His Buttons
Did you read Oreo’s
story from our August
2021 Shaggy Sheet?
Oreo, our cover
model, was the first
recipient of the button
technique to repair her
jaw!
Buttons save
the day again!
In August 2021,
Citrus County Animal
Services were called to a home for a report of animal
cruelty. The house in question was unclean and had
high levels of ammonia in the air. Among those in the
house was Bandit, a 10-year-old Shih Tzu with one
eye. He was living in a wire dog crate with 2 other
dogs of similar size. There was no bedding, a large
amount of urine and feces in the crate tray, and an
empty food and water bowl.
All the animals were rescued and transported
immediately to Citrus County Animal Services for
evaluation and care - they were provided with clean
housing, fresh water, food and medical examinations.
Peggy Adams transferred Bandit to their shelter
in Palm Beach County to provide him the care he
desperately needed.
Bandit had a dental cleaning and several teeth had to
be removed due to disease. This is when we discovered
Bandit had a jaw fracture. The fracture needed
stabilization, so our veterinarian performed a button
technique.
Bandit had buttons and sutures holding his jaw closed
for five weeks to allow it to heal. The buttons provided
tension to “wire” Bandit’s jaw shut. Bandit was able to
eat soft wet food and was placed into a foster home to
receive the love and care he needed.
On October 8, 2021, Bandit was adopted into his
forever home where he is showered with love,
restfully sleeping on a soft plush bed and enjoying
delicious treats – all things that every companion
animal deserves.
