HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAM CONTINUED
As part of the program, we bring in Ambassador
Canines. These are specially selected dogs, and
their people, who have gone through training to
help provide children with a safe and positive dog
interaction. One of those dogs is “Snuffy”, a 4-year-old
boxer mix. It is more than accurate to say that he was
born for this program. He’s happiest when engaging
with people of all ages and just wiggles with delight.
Sometimes, there is a child who is a little hesitant. I
work closely with them to provide a sense of safety
and security so they can enjoy the experience as well.
But sometimes…the kids take the lead.
One evening, seasoned readers Eva and Gabriel were
visiting with Snuffy, and noticed new reader Breece
was a little unsure. Without any prompting, the
two siblings jumped in and guided her through the
“Snuffy Process.” They showed her how they would pet
him, give him treats, and even work on his training
behaviors, like sit and paw. This pure love and joy
became contagious because before you knew it, Breece
was giving treats and petting Snuffy too!
But it goes even deeper. Volunteers Linda and Rick
Laverty are part of this program – they are Snuffy’s
people. What joy and purpose this program brings to
them. Just seeing the intergenerational engagement
is priceless.
Linda often sends me notes like these…
“We are very excited to be a part of this innovative
approach to reading.”
“Rick and I are so glad to be a part of this
wonderful educational program you have worked
so diligently to establish. As a former educator, I
appreciate the tremendous effort it takes to implement
a new program.”
“We enjoyed being a part of Summer programs,
which are educational, interactive, and just fun for all
involved. We are fortunate that you chose our Snuffy to
be one of the Ambassadors.”
While Linda’s notes often thank me for including
them, it is me that is thankful for them and
everyone involved in the success of the Rescue
Readers program.
