A Letter from
Rich Anderson
Executive Director/CEO
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
We continue to make a huge impact in our community and YOU make it
all possible!
Our cover models Liberty and Glory – were surrendered to Peggy Adams
on September 4 th . Neither dog had ever seen a veterinarian in their lives
until they were under our care. Both mother and daughter were extremely
bonded, and it was important to adopt them into a loving home…together.
Please be sure to read their story and how they are doing today on page 5.
In this edition of The Shaggy Sheet, you’ll also read more special,
heartwarming stories. You’ll meet Bandit – saved from an animal cruelty
case in Citrus County, Florida and now…living an amazing new life with
cozy plush beds and plenty of delicious treats.
Also, check out our Happy Tails on pages 14-15. We always love to share
the updates we receive from our adopters…and this is just a sampling.
And, thanks to friends like you, Peggy Adams is making a difference in the
lives of more and more animals each year. In fact, in 2021, you helped us
save more lives than any other year in our 96-year history!
And, because of your support, 2021 was monumental as we were able
to open the new Lesly S. Smith Pet Adoption Center which is already
dramatically increasing the lifesaving impact of Peggy Adams in the
community.
Thank you for making all we do possible at Peggy Adams!
With compassion for the animals,
Pets Evacuated from Louisiana Find a New Leash on Life in Florida
Each person and each animal has a unique story.
Because of your support, we are here to help those
in need.
South Florida was extremely fortunate to not have
been affected by hurricanes in 2021. Other states were
not so fortunate. In September, Hurricane Ida ripped
through the state of Louisiana and Mississippi causing
destruction and lengthy power outages.
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and other
local animal rescue organizations had to step in to
help! A rescue mission, coordinated by the Florida
Association of Animal Welfare Organization, was
planned to transfer 270 dogs and cats from the
devastated area to Orlando. From there, a dozen
animal rescue organizations transferred these
homeless pets to various Florida shelters…including
Peggy Adams.
Following safety and medical protocols, all the
animals were placed under quarantine for two weeks.
Once they were cleared for adoption, they were
placed in our adoption program. While most of them
have found their loving forever homes, some are still
waiting for their new families to come adopt them.
Jake, Adopted 10/20/21
Because of YOU, we are there for those animals in
need…such as those affected by Hurricane Ida. Your
support allows us to have them transferred, provide
them with the care they need and ultimately…find
them the loving homes they so deserve.
About Peggy Adams’ 2022 Calendar
This year, Peggy Adams did something different for
its annual calendar. We turned it into a contest where
people could show off their furry family member by
submitting a photo and then have their family and
friends vote for them.
Twelve First Prize winners had a professional photo
taken and are featured on an individual month.
Eighty Second Prize winners have their photos
featured in other spots throughout the calendar,
and the Grand Prize winner is featured on the
cover and on a month, as well!
Thank you to everyone who supported the 2022
Calendar Contest! Stay tuned for news about our
2023 calendar!
Liberty and Glory's Happy Tail
Liberty, a 4-month-old puppy, and her mom Glory
were surrendered to Peggy Adams in September. The
owner reported that Liberty was born without paws
but that she was able to get around without an issue.
Neither dog had been to a veterinarian in the past.
Liberty's x-ray
We performed x-rays and found that Liberty has
underdeveloped or missing bones in her front legs and
no wrists or front feet. She walks around sometimes as
a human does, on her two back legs. Other times, she
will put some weight on what front legs she does have.
Fortunately, Liberty is only 3½ pounds so it’s not too
much weight for her to put on her nubs!
Upon a physical exam, our veterinarians did not
find any other abnormalities with Liberty, just the
underdevelopment of her front legs. Once both dogs
received a clean bill of health, they were ready to
be placed up for adoption. Liberty and Glory were
extremely bonded, our goal was to find a forever
home where they could live together. Liberty and
Glory were adopted into their perfect new home on
September 11, 2021.
“It was during my volunteer shift at the shelter when
Liberty and Glory were surrendered. When someone
mentioned to me to go check them out, I fell in love
immediately. I spent time with them and took pictures
and video. When I came out of their kennel, a staff
member saw me and said, ‘I can see it in your eyes
you want them’. I said “yes” and put in my request
to adopt!”
“This was out of my league, as I usually rescue the
senior dogs who are overlooked because of their age
and/or medical condition.”
“I received a text on Friday letting me know that I
could pick them up on Saturday, which was 9/11.
And that is how I came up with their new names,
Liberty and Glory.”
“They both are so lovable and always giving kisses and
soaking up the love! They love their belly rubs! They
are inseparable. I bought a puppy sling for Liberty so
she too can go out when Glory takes a walk. When
Liberty is full grown, she’ll get her own set of hot
wheels! Then Liberty and Glory will be able to ‘walk
and roll!!!’ ” – Judy
Bandit and His Buttons
Did you read Oreo’s
story from our August
2021 Shaggy Sheet?
Oreo, our cover
model, was the first
recipient of the button
technique to repair her
jaw!
Buttons save
the day again!
In August 2021,
Citrus County Animal
Services were called to a home for a report of animal
cruelty. The house in question was unclean and had
high levels of ammonia in the air. Among those in the
house was Bandit, a 10-year-old Shih Tzu with one
eye. He was living in a wire dog crate with 2 other
dogs of similar size. There was no bedding, a large
amount of urine and feces in the crate tray, and an
empty food and water bowl.
All the animals were rescued and transported
immediately to Citrus County Animal Services for
evaluation and care - they were provided with clean
housing, fresh water, food and medical examinations.
Peggy Adams transferred Bandit to their shelter
in Palm Beach County to provide him the care he
desperately needed.
Bandit had a dental cleaning and several teeth had to
be removed due to disease. This is when we discovered
Bandit had a jaw fracture. The fracture needed
stabilization, so our veterinarian performed a button
technique.
Bandit had buttons and sutures holding his jaw closed
for five weeks to allow it to heal. The buttons provided
tension to “wire” Bandit’s jaw shut. Bandit was able to
eat soft wet food and was placed into a foster home to
receive the love and care he needed.
On October 8, 2021, Bandit was adopted into his
forever home where he is showered with love,
restfully sleeping on a soft plush bed and enjoying
delicious treats – all things that every companion
animal deserves.
374 Animals Placed into Loving Homes!
Held October 16 th through October 23 rd , the eighth
annual Countdown 2 Zero (C2Z) Adoption Event
found forever homes for 374 pets. Hosted by
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League and Palm Beach
County Animal Care & Control, this event is typically
a one-day mega pet adoption event held at the
South Florida Fairgrounds. For the second year, due
to COVID-19, we went virtual! Seven local rescues
created a “booth” in the Virtual Adoption Village
that showcased their adoptable pets and provided
an easy resource for adopting. During the Kick-Off
Celebration on Saturday, October 16 th , adoptable pets
and participating rescues were showcased through
social media posts and videos.
Thank you to our generous sponsors:
“Last year’s virtual C2Z adoption event went so well,
and with safety on our minds again this year, we
decided to once again go virtual for C2Z,” said
Rich Anderson, Executive Director/CEO of
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. “Although the
event is virtual, the mission is still the same – saving
the lives of animals in Palm Beach County. All of the
rescues involved are committed to making sure that
those in our community still have the opportunity to
participate in the largest pet adoption event in Palm
Beach County…and due to the current circumstance,
we once again have an opportunity to create a fun,
virtual event.”
being deaf in addition to being blind, she hasn’t faced
HAPPY TAILS CONTINUED
Burrito
happy to have
him. Our sincere
thanks to all of you
Burrito
Burrito, Adopted 6/1/21
“We wanted to give you an update on our spicy little
Jack Russell mix, Burrito, who we adopted three
months ago. As you may remember, he was brought
to the facility by animal control as a stray. He was
exhibiting behavioral issues, including growling and
even biting – and we were well warned: this little guy
doesn’t need ANY hot sauce!”
“The first two weeks were naturally a big adjustment
period for Burrito, who stayed in one room of the
house and showed no interest in exploring or getting
too close to us. It became clear rather quickly that
Burrito had not had great experiences with humans in
the past. Being able to leash him without biting was a
two-week process. Putting on a collar was closer to a
month. Even though this was a challenging time for
us, we were still confident he could come around and
we were committed to doing everything we could to
make sure this would be his forever home.”
“Little by little, Burrito’s always guarded nature faded,
and his sweet and playful side became more and more
present. He’s a smart dog and learned basic commands
quickly! The slow and steady progress continues to
build on itself and today Burrito is
living his best life.”
“Burrito spends his days playing fetch with his tennis
balls, enjoying car rides, walking by the beach,
munching on carrots (his favorite low-calorie snack),
and of course napping! He is always entertaining and
we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him as part of
Smokey Robinson, Adopted 7/3/21
“Ollie, whose name is now Smokey Robinson, is the
greatest cat ever! We couldn’t imagine our life without
him. He is sweet, loveable, funny, and definitely the
king of the house. He loves to play with his toys,
especially feather ones. He always greets us when we
come through the door and follows me or my husband
all the time. He loves his naps too. I am so happy that
he was available for us to adopt. He truly is the best cat
in the world and the perfect cat for our family.”
Providing Emergency Care
In loving memory…
On September 30 th , Olivia passed away
and crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
She will be incredibly missed,
but her legacy will continue
to help other animals in need of care.
Wilder is a 1.5-year-old cat that was transferred
to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League by a local
veterinary clinic. Wilder’s owner surrendered him
to the veterinary clinic when he was unable to
urinate due to a blocked urinary tract. The veterinary
clinic realized what a sweet boy he was and fought to
save him. After the clinic removed the blockage and
he was stable, they brought him to Peggy Adams so
he could find a loving home.
Unfortunately, Wilder blocked again within a few
days at Peggy Adams. He required a specialty surgery
– called a PU (perineal urethrostomy) surgery – that
would allow him to urinate and not block up again.
This is not a surgery that our veterinarians do, but we
were able to call a veterinary surgeon to take care of
him. The surgeon was able to come to Peggy Adams to
perform this specialized surgery.
Thanks to those who support Peggy Adams’ Olivia’s
Fund, we were able to provide Wilder the care that he
desperately needed and will continue to help other
animals like Wilder.
About Olivia’s Fund: Olivia came to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League after being rescued from an animal hoarder. She had
significant hip dysplasia and muscle atrophy from abuse and neglect. Olivia had also been shot with a BB gun and needed surgery
to help repair her legs. In honor of Olivia, we set up a special fund to help give a second chance to dogs and cats with medical and
behavioral issues that can be fixed with surgery, special medical treatment, or training. We decided to call it “Olivia’s Fund.”
KIDS' CORNER
It’s always a great time to instill philanthropy in
children. Philanthropy is not only for adults or the
wealthy, but that anyone trying to better the society is
a philanthropist!
Special thanks to the Facebook group “Mystic
Michaela Spiritual Family”. They are a group of 8,000
like-minded individuals who want to help raise
kindness and compassion in the world around us.
They consider their empathy to be their superpower
and find that advocating for others is one way to do
so. In May, they donated items from our wish list and
again donated $200 in August.
Thank you, Michaela and Friends!
Jessie Brooker and Isabel, lifelong scouting friends,
chose to help Peggy Adams for their Girl Scout
Silver Award Project because they love animals…
especially kittens! When the girls were volunteering,
they noticed how toys were linked to increased
confidence, especially with shy kittens. “Cats have
instincts that make them effective hunters and playing
with toys gives them an outlet for energy inside their
kennel environment,” said Jessie Brooke. Many cats
like toys from pet supply stores just fine, but Jessie
Brooke wanted to give them something special and
homemade, as Girl Scouts often do. She put her
artistic skills to work by sewing catnip pillows and
donating them to rescue centers.
HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAM
Kids Take the Lead
By Shellie J. Kalmore, Education Manager
When I first developed the Rescue Readers
program, the initial intention was a mutually
beneficial experience for animals at the shelter and
reluctant readers but it has grown to be so much
more. Every week I see children and their parents or
caregivers share their hearts and time with our shelter
pets. The children involved feel empowered and
realize they have the very important job of providing
valuable socialization and love to the shelter animals.
“It’s important to go read to the cats because then
they can get more used to humans, and someone can
adopt them!” – Eva, age 8
Making Friends
Sharing Time
“As a mom, I love seeing my kids find ways to share
their love for the benefit of others. It’s hard to find places
where little kids can volunteer, so we were thrilled
to find Rescue Readers. I’ve seen my kids grow in
tenderness as they interact with these sweet animals
who’ve been through so many struggles. To know that
we’re part of their journey brings us joy and purpose.”
– Elizabeth, Eva & Gabriel’s mom
Over time, they’ve developed relationships with some
of these animals, so adoption can be bittersweet. They
are happy when the animals find their forever homes,
but they do miss them.
“I like that we sometimes get to see our favorite cats.
I like when they get adopted too because that’s good and
sweet.” – Gabriel, age 5
But, the layers of this program continue to be
uncovered.
Trying New Things
HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAM CONTINUED
As part of the program, we bring in Ambassador
Canines. These are specially selected dogs, and
their people, who have gone through training to
help provide children with a safe and positive dog
interaction. One of those dogs is “Snuffy”, a 4-year-old
boxer mix. It is more than accurate to say that he was
born for this program. He’s happiest when engaging
with people of all ages and just wiggles with delight.
Sometimes, there is a child who is a little hesitant. I
work closely with them to provide a sense of safety
and security so they can enjoy the experience as well.
But sometimes…the kids take the lead.
One evening, seasoned readers Eva and Gabriel were
visiting with Snuffy, and noticed new reader Breece
was a little unsure. Without any prompting, the
two siblings jumped in and guided her through the
“Snuffy Process.” They showed her how they would pet
him, give him treats, and even work on his training
behaviors, like sit and paw. This pure love and joy
became contagious because before you knew it, Breece
was giving treats and petting Snuffy too!
But it goes even deeper. Volunteers Linda and Rick
Laverty are part of this program – they are Snuffy’s
people. What joy and purpose this program brings to
them. Just seeing the intergenerational engagement
is priceless.
Linda often sends me notes like these…
“We are very excited to be a part of this innovative
approach to reading.”
“Rick and I are so glad to be a part of this
wonderful educational program you have worked
so diligently to establish. As a former educator, I
appreciate the tremendous effort it takes to implement
a new program.”
“We enjoyed being a part of Summer programs,
which are educational, interactive, and just fun for all
involved. We are fortunate that you chose our Snuffy to
be one of the Ambassadors.”
While Linda’s notes often thank me for including
them, it is me that is thankful for them and
everyone involved in the success of the Rescue
Readers program.
Creating A Lasting Legacy
EUNICE J. GARDINER CAMPUS
Eunice Joyce Gardiner (1928-2011)
Born in London, Eunice was a noted British model
with striking red hair, ivory skin and brilliant green
eyes. At age 22, she married William Pitt Oakes, son of
a self-made mining millionaire. Following his death,
she traveled and studied art and architecture in the
United States and abroad.
Eunice met Robert David Lion Gardiner in Palm
Beach in 1961 and they were married for more than
40 years. Robert Gardiner was the 16th Lord of the
Manor of Gardiner’s Island in Suffolk County, Long
Island, and a descendant of Lion Gardiner who
acquired Gardiner’s Island in 1639 by a Royal Grant.
It is still the oldest privately owned island in the
United States.
Eunice passed away in 2011. Prior to her death, she
quietly planned to make a gift that would set the stage
for the next chapter of animal welfare in Palm Beach
County. It wasn’t until 2013 that Peggy Adams Animal
Rescue League was informed that Eunice, inspired
by her love of animals, had created a perpetual trust
to benefit the animals of our community and the lost,
abandoned and injured, in particular. Mrs. Gardiner’s
visionary gift ensured that Peggy Adams would not
only continue its lifesaving work for generations to
come, but also expand its programs to impact and
save the lives of more animals than ever before.
Thanks to Mrs. Gardiner’s generosity, the Board of
Directors of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League
began the process of planning for a campus expansion
highlighted by the opening of the Lesly S. Smith Pet
Adoption Center in 2021.
In recognition of Mrs. Gardiner’s vision and
compassion, the 13.5-acre Peggy Adams campus was
renamed the Eunice J. Gardiner Campus.
