November 2021
Dear Friends,
What a difference a year makes. Last year we were unsure
of what our future would be and what our “new normal”
would look like. We are pleased to say that our “new normal”
is a vibrant and, quite frankly, a thriving JCC. It may be one
of masks, COVID screenings and cautions, but we are in fact
thriving. If this past year has taught us anything it’s that we
must hold true to our core mission and continue meeting the
needs of our community.
Enrollment in our early childhood program, camps, after
school program and children’s sports classes is healthy. Seniors
are once again enjoying delicious kosher lunches in-person
five days a week. Our Fitness Center is open and offers many
virtual and in-person classes.
Although we are saddened that some Fitness members
have not renewed their memberships because of the pandemic,
we are seeing a cautious shift to renewal. Some members
have returned with the COVID vaccine rollout and the JCC’s
recent policy requiring all staff to be fully vaccinated. In
addition, our board of directors voted in September to make
our building accessible for vaccinated individuals only. This
courageous decision was made to protect our membership, the
children, seniors and staff.
We are optimistic and enthusiastic about the future. Our
childcare enrollment is thriving. More and more individuals
are coming back to the “J.” We are excitedly planning
our 2022 Annual Meeting and Gala on May 22 at Owera
Vineyards. Things are finally starting to move forward.
As always, but especially now, your JCC needs your
support. Whether through your membership, tax-deductible
donation or frankly both, your generosity will allow us
to continue being the “town square” of our community.
The place where a child is raised in our Early Childhood
Development Program, then attends our after school program
and summer camp, holds their first job as a lifeguard or camp
counselor, and then sends their own children to our programs.
Please help to perpetuate this lifecycle by supporting your
JCC now and forever. Help us maintain our long tradition
of serving the diverse needs of our community. You can be
proud of how well we have adapted and be assured that your
generous donation will positively impact many lives.
Sincerely,
Marci Erlebacher
Supporting Your Center
Your continued financial
contributions, gifts, grants and
endowments allow us to serve
you, your family and the larger
community six days per week,
year round. Funds raised are
critical to daily operations, special
programming, future development
and improvements, and
scholarships and financial aid.
Matching gifts
Many companies in the Syracuse area have
matching gift programs, which encourage
charitable giving by their employees.
Under these programs, companies match
gifts—often dollar for dollar or even two
dollars to one—that individuals make to
nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. Your
gift to the JCC may qualify. Please check
with your company to determine eligibility
requirements.
Tribute cards
To commemorate special occasions,
including births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, marriages, Bar or Bat
Mitzvah, or to celebrate and honor
the memory of a loved one, the JCC
welcomes tax-deductible gifts to one of
our many endowment or special funds.
(See the tributes on page 26.) The JCC
will send an acknowledgement card to the
individual (or next of kin) in whose name
the contribution is made. Tribute cards
recognize someone special and help the
JCC. For more information, contact Erin
Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
End-of-Year Donation
Designate your United Way
donation to support the JCC
If you participate in the United Way
Community Campaign where you work
or as an individual donor, please consider
designating all or part of your gift to
the JCC of Syracuse. This can easily be
done on your pledge card. Your generous
contribution to the JCC through the
United Way donor program will go a long
way in supporting your JCC.
Volunteer
An agency such as the JCC is dependent
on the enthusiasm and willingness of
members of the community who volunteer
their time and talent. Volunteers are
invaluable in bringing vital perspective,
experience, community and manpower to
complement those of our staff members.
Public support is imperative to the JCC of Syracuse’s survival. The center depends
on these donations for a full 7% of its annual budget. We recently mailed out
our end-of-year campaign letters
requesting your generous support. For
your convenience, a copy of this letter
is reprinted on page 3 along with the
form to use for making a tax-deductible
end-of-year contribution if you haven’t
already done so. No gift is too small
and all donations to the JCC are greatly
appreciated!
Jewish Federation of CNY
The JCC of Syracuse is a beneficiary
agency of the Jewish Federation of
Central New York. The JCC receives
funding from the Federation and
works in close partnership with it to
provide the Jewish community with
essential programs and services.
JCC families and members can help
by giving generously to the Jewish
Federation of CNY campaign.
Senior Adult Dining Program
Our Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior Adult
Dining Program (see page 21) offers
seniors a hot, nutritious kosher meal
five days a week at a very affordable
price. It’s our way of “giving back” to
local seniors who form the foundation
of our community. You can help
keep this valuable program going by
making a contribution or becoming a
sponsor of our monthly senior newsletter.
Kashrut Policy
The JCC kitchen is under the supervision
of the Syracuse Va’ad Ha-ir. The kashrut
of approved foods that may be brought into
the kitchen. This list is available through
program staff members.
Room rental
The JCC rents a variety of spaces at
affordable rates. Our auditorium has
computer presentation capabilities and we
offer kosher catering. We also have various
conference rooms that can be arranged to
accommodate meetings, classes, parties
and other events. For details, contact Erin
Hart at 315-445-2040, ext. 112.
Snow policy
The JCC is committed to staying open
during snowy and harsh winter weather.
to remain open for childcare. See page 19
Closings are announced on our website
www.jccsyr.org, Facebook and Twitter, as
well as listed on local TV channels 3, 5, 9
and 10, and on radio stations 620 AM, 570
How Young Children Learn
Much of what children learn and do in
an early childhood program doesn’t come
home in a backpack. Young children
learn best through hands-on and direct
interactive experiences. This type of
learning happens through play and
exploration.
The Jerome and Phyllis Charney Early
Creative Curriculum paired with the NYS
Early Learning Guidelines, using a Reggio
Emilia inspired approach to learning.
child brings with them deep curiosity and
potential, and this innate curiosity drives
their interest to understand their world
and their place within it.
persons listed above, hereby agree to the following:
I am applying for membership with the Jewish
Community Center (JCC) of Syracuse. I agree to
abide by its rules and bylaws. I understand that all
commitment. If paying by monthly automatic payments
from a credit card, I authorize the JCC of Syracuse to
automatically charge my credit card account for each
consecutive month of the plan.
I understand that membership dues are automatically
renewed each year unless I give notice in writing.
Note that the JCC of Syracuse reserves the right to
cancel a membership for any reason at any time with
appropriate notice. I understand that membership
is not transferable and membership dues are
non-refundable.
Trial and discounted promotional memberships are not
eligible for child care or other program discounts.
I have read and agree with these membership terms
The Syracuse Chargers Track Club’s
Everyone Can Run Beginners Running
Program was postponed last fall due to
concerns over the pandemic. It will now
start on Jan. 5 at the Sam Pomeranz Jewish
Community Center’s Neulander Family
Sports & Fitness Center. Greg Tuttle of the
Syracuse Chargers,
a USA Track &
Field-certified
coach, will lead the
weekly sessions on
Wednesdays from
5:30–6:30 p.m.
through Feb. 2.
The free five-week
program will be held
at the Fitness Center’s indoor track.
Patrick Scott, the JCC’s sports and
fitness director, says this program is for
everyone and that people of all fitness
levels are welcome.
“The Chargers do a great job of
teaching people how to run properly,” he
says. “The strength of your leg muscles,
your bones, your body posture, your gait—
all of these affect your stamina. By the end
of the program, you will be able to run for
30 minutes with relative ease.”
The class will start with walking and
the number of running intervals will
increase every week
on a set schedule.
Each participant
will also be given a
Syracuse Chargers
pedometer and a twoweek
trial pass to the
JCC’s Fitness Center.
Registration
forms are available
Chargers website www.syracusechargers.org
