AT 50
Today the Garage Magazine talks to three
generations of directors at JHM Butt
and Company who are celebrating being
in business for 50 years, an amazing
achievement for a company that has seen
so little change in management.
Butts is 50, and is still a family orientated business, as well as having
massive success, how have you maintained that friendly feel?
Consistent values, investing time in our staff wellbeing, putting people
above profit. 50 years is a long time but our strength is being able
to maintain consistent values, like investing in our staff wellbeing
and putting people above profit. We believe that if we have happy
employees we will in turn have happy customers. As a management
team we try to support our staff so they are in turn equipped to
support our customers. We feel that one of our greatest strengths
is although we are incredibly serious about our work, we don’t take
ourselves too seriously. We laugh together, - we laugh with each
other, we laugh at each other and we always laugh at ourselves. This
approach has helped diffuse quite a few stressful situations and has
promoted a sense of wellbeing within the company that then flows
into our business relationships.
Butts has only ever had three managing directors, two from the same
family and a third who has been in the business since the age of 17,
how proud of this consistency are you?
It’s a challenge in our industry for businesses to have the same owners
for a protracted period. That we have only had 3 MDs illustrates the
commitment to the company and the care and attention to offering a
reliable place of work for our staff. Like all companies we like to have
high staff retention and we believe that consistency at managerial
level will help foster consistency at all other levels.
