DEAR READER
Getting back to some kind of normality
Dear Reader
For those living in Spain,
normally we would be
saying that this country
is diverse enough to keep
residents all of ages entertained
with things to do and places to
visit, whether you’re looking for a
day trip, weekend break, local excursion
or annual vacation, you will find this on the
Costa Blanca. However, we are starting to get
back to some normality now that quite a lot
restrictions have lifted. The masks are still
worn to enter shops, supermarkets etc.
However, it is still eye catching to look at
the lovely beaches and relax with the good
weather still with us. Much cooler though.
Spain’s weather in November. With seven
rainfall days for the month, rain is expected
at some point during November. The amount
of sunshine hours has now dropped to six
per day. The sea temperatures are now just
18 degrees Celsius. On the upside, peak high
temperatures still might reach the 20 to 22
degrees Celsius mark. There is a fair degree
of temperature variation in the waters of the
Med. It is generally significantly warmer
as you travel east and there is around 10°C
range between winter and summer high and
lows.
It’s worth thinking about some warm
clothes. I cannot believe a “cool” November
is arriving. We just don’t know!! November’s
traditional weather on the Costa Blanca is
fairly miserable, but that is if you compare it
to the peaks of summer.
Remembrance Day also known as
Poppy Day or Armistice Day is celebrated
to commemorate the heroic efforts made
in past wars. The holiday is annual and
it is on the second Sunday in
November. A moment of silence
is reserved at 11am on November
11th. People wear poppies as a
symbol of respect. On this day
memorial services, church services
and parades also held to remember
the members of their armed forces who
have died in the line of duty. Remembrance
Day is to recall the end of hostilities of World
War I on that date in 1918. Bells in churches
and cathedrals will ring out on 11 November
and Big Ben will also strike to mark the
centenary of Armistice Day.
World War 1 Jul 28, 1914 – Nov 11, 1918.
World War II (WWII or WW2), also known
as the Second World War, was a global war
that lasted from 1939 to 1945.
The birthstone for the month of November
is yellow topaz, which is believed by some
to impart powers of healing and give the
wearer strength.
November Birth Flower: Chrysanthemum.
Chrysanthemums or “mums” as they are
more commonly known are one of the most
widely cultivated flowers in the world, and
the birthday flower for those born in the
month of November.
People born from November 1st to
November 22nd are members of the Scorpio
sign. A Scorpio can be identified by their
success-driven and resilient nature.
Remember you are never alone with an
My daughter has had an emotional
years. They cannot live together but
they do not do well when they are apart
and we feel helpless to assist; and only
being a coward?
Jon. Denia
I gather that this is not the first
time that they have pulled apart
as a couple, but partnerships are
a challenge, and compromise has
to come in somewhere. They are
playing a game, whereas if their
relationship was steadier and they
committed, then they could take
time apart and live together more
freely, and not have tantrums.
No you are not being a coward.
Perhaps you have realised that
though this may change things,
that for others, knowing the
truth may not be the right thing
right now. It is a responsibility to
have this secret, but you cannot
DR. M. ISABEL SIGNES-SOLER
Vision Sense Fronteres (Vision Without Borders)
just came back from their last prevention of
blindness progame in Africa. The project took place
in one of Nairobi’s slums, in a recently opened small
hospital. It was the first time that operating rooms
had been used. The Spanish team was compose with
3 ophthalmologist, 3 optometrist and 3 ophthalmic
nurses.
Nairobi is the most populous city in East Africa, with
an estimated urban population of more than 4 million
people.
The reception from the local hospital staff was very
good and they provided us with support staff at all
times as well as working together in the operating
room.
Cataract Surgery in
Nairobi 2021
Patients waiting to be reviewed by the Spanish team.
Taking the vision of the patients before being selected.
Most of the patients were from the “Kikuyo” ethnic
group, which is the most common in the area, but
patients also came from very remote areas such as
Kissi, Meru and Mombasa. According to what they
told us, they heard it on the radio or saw it on social
media and decided to make the long journey to be
operated by our team. Some of the patients had been
diagnosed with cataracts for a long time, but due to
lack of resources, they had not been able to undergo
surgery.
There were many local supporters.
The review of patients to select those with cataracts
was performed by local personnel 2 weeks before
our arrival, but even with the surgeries started,
they continued to review patients untill last day of
surgeries.
A total of 2890 patients were reviewed by the local
counterpart, of these 490 patients were recruited
for surgery. Once the patient was dilated, and his
intraocular pressure was taken, 249 eyes were
operated on, all for cataracts except one for eyelids
by accident. The unselected patients presented other
types of ocular pathologies, not treatable with the
intervention.
The daily days started at 7.30 in the morning and
ended around 7 p.m. because there is a curfew in
Kenya due to COVID. The ophthalmologists did
not stop operating even to go to eat to optimize the
working time in the hospital to the maximum.
In general all the patients were very happy.
And the recovery was very fast. At 24 hours all the
Dra. Maria Isabel Signes-Soler, PhD, FAAO • Tel: 965832080

DR. M. ISABEL SIGNES-SOLER NOVEMBER 2021 | 13
corneas were very
transparent, which
is a sign of a very
fast recovery. Only
on 1 occasions
was it necessary to
implant an anterior
chamber lens due
to difficulties in
surgery due to the
type of cataract
presented by the
patients. It must be
taken into account
that 85% of patients
saw less than 5% before undergoing surgery and in
many cases they had been blind for years, so some
interventions were very complex.
In this project, two phacoemulsification devices
(Phaco) were used, which allowed us to perform
surgeries with a smaller incision, which entails a quick
recovery, as well as a much shorter surgery, which
allows us to operate on more patients.
The nurses and local auxiliary staff were very
willing and praised the great work of the Spanish
team. The good relationship with them and their
help in the translation of the patients facilitated the
successful development of the campaign.
The patients will be checked weekly and monthly
by the local ophthalmologist Dr. Brenda and our
assistants will go back to Kenya to check the patients
after 3 months.
Everything was organized by Amrita Kenya as a
local counterpart as in previous editions. And we have
also had this year, for the third consecutive year, with
the collaboration of the Calpe City Council
Isabel with the Spanish Consul in Nairobi and Dr. Brenda,
the ophthalmologist responsable of the hospital.
JOHN CURTIS
Hello and a warm welcome to this
month´s All Time Great who is a
fallen hero among those we
have lost this year, a feller called,
eventually, Les Van Dyke who
died in August at the ripe
old age of 90. Les started
out in showbizz as a
singer, using the stage
name Johnny Worth, but
enjoyed far more success
as a songwriter for others.
For this activity he needed
another moniker so became,
in around 1959, Les Van
Dyke.
Actually this month´s hero
was born John Worsley in 1931 and it
was while doing his obligatory National
Service he decided to try his luck as a singer
after demobbing. A very lucky day came
when he joined up with a vocal quartet
called The Raindrops. It was they,
including Vince Hill and Irish
songstress Jackie Lee, who
were awarded a regular slot
among the performers on a
TV show called “Drumbeat”
a successor to “Six Five
Special” and a forerunner
to “Top Of The Pops” at the
end of the 50s. Enter now
two vital names in the LVD
story. Musical arranger and
houseband leader on Drumbeat
was John Barry and another young
talent was a boy singer who had recently
changed HIS name to Adam Faith. Suffice
JOHN CURTIS
NOVEMBER 2021 | 15
it to say Les started to write songs with
Adam in mind, John Barry
started to arrange them
(including the violins
played “pizzicato”)
and Drumbeat was
the perfect vehicle
to deliver them to a
young and hungry
public. Starting
with a No. 1 hit,
What Do You Want,
Les went on to
write over 30 songs
for Adam of which
12 were top ten hits.
John Barry arranged each
one and it was his orchestra
that provided the backing many
of which included the trademark pizzicato
plucking of violins. This combination ran
out of steam with the emergence of the
beat boom in 1963 but not before LVD had
also penned 3 big hits for Eden Kane and
also enjoyed chart success with Anthony
Newley, Jimmy Justice, Carole Deene, John
Leyton, Marty Wilde, Chris Sandford and
The Bruisers. Les would find no success
with any of the beat boom groups but
an impressive list of singers (EG. Barbra
Streisand Matt Monro and Shirley Bassey!)
would continue to record his songs while
the man himself was on hand to supply his
own vocals to a number of productions.
As Les entered his 40s in the early 70s
two of his songs emerged to show his talent
could still shine. Firstly in 1971 his song
“Jack In The Box” was Clodagh Rodgers´
entry in The Eurovision Song Contest. It did
not win but gave Les a N0. 4 hit. May I add
that I personally hate this song by the way
but wish I had written it! 2 years later a LVD
song again found it´s way into the top ten.
This was “Gonna Make You An Offer You
Can´t Refuse” by soul singer Jimmy Helms.
Les continued to write songs, active
more now in film and television
and it was the latter which was
to give him one last chart
appearance many years
later. Les composed the
theme tune to the popular
series “To Have And To
Hold” and, performed
by his wife Catherine
Stock, the song made no.
17 in the charts in 1987.
Catherine´s brother Mike
incidentally was a third
of the famous Stock Aitken
Waterman team that was so
successful in the 1980s.
A quieter life in his later years did nothing
to diminish LVD´s status and place in the
history of pop music and he only ceased
to be a living legend when he finally left
us in August 2021 at the great age of 90. A
feature / tribute to Les Van Dyke will form
a substantial part of my Podcast for the
week commencing Saturday 27th November
so I hope you will have a listen and enjoy it.
There you will find and hear all the major
songs, including the Adam Faith and Eden
Kane hits, and I will also be playing them
regularly on my Sunday morning show on
Pure Gold FM where retro is the name of
the game. Always feel free to contact me by
Email to “jcpodcast10@gmail.com.”
I hope you enjoy my articles & look
forward to the pleasure of your company
back here next month which will be , good
grief, our Christmas edition. Till then I urge
you to KEEP ROCKING, no matter what &
in the words of Les Van Dyke, “Forget Me
Not!”
Magic Travel
Moments
Highlight those (many) travel moments in
my life when things have ‘sparkled’.
Pyramid Mountain
On the other side of the Bay, mostly
hidden behind low, running hills,
it calls to me as I stand on the Roof
Terrace.... absorbing the views all around
us. They are breath-takingly varied, ‘snapshots’
of some of what this region of Southern
Mainland Greece offers.
“Pyramid Mountain” (so named by me)
keeps calling to me, loud and clear, “Return to
Ancient Egypt!”
I continue to be spell-bound by that Great
Civilization’s magnificent monuments and
their powerful carvings.
From this distance “Pyramid Mountain
presents the upper half of a perfect pyramid
but, when I drive right by it, close up, the
by John
David
Moorhouse
DAVID MOORHOUSE.
‘perfection’ disappears.... rocky slopes rise
from rough scrubland to a non-geometric peak;
there is no man-made, finely-constructed
base, no imposing, funerary temple entrance
at ground-level; in fact there is no smooth
ground-level to be seen, just ravines and
hidden streams (only awake during the wet
season).
Yet, somehow, the “Magic” of “Pyramid
Mountain stays in the air as I drive by on my
way to Pilos’s blue sea...
it’s not just about echoing images, it’s about
what actually happened before, then was
lost and now has been re-found by me (and
others).

DEE’S TRAVELS
MOVING AROUND
PART TWO
A
couple of months ago I was asked
to contribute to a compendium of
travel stories, tales of people who
had left to go and work in countries
all around the world.
However, no one talked
about what they took
with them and what
they left behind.
They described the
scenery, the travel,
the new friends,
the ancient
buildings and so
on but nothing
about what they
had crammed into
suitcases and packing
crates.
For months I followed
the travels on Facebook from
a lady who toured several countries
carrying only a toothbrush and spare
underwear stuffed into her coat pocket. I
was so impressed, but she never went into
detail as to how she managed but, only that
she never had to lurk, holding her breath,
around the luggage carousels. You know the
feeling, will it or will it not appear? Will it
be open or closed? Will the wheels still be
attached or the outer shell cracked? Yes,
we’ve all been there.
I have lived in eight countries, yes, I know
that’s not many, but thanks to my ex-Walter
Mitty husband we often had to leave at very
short notice.
We were given seven days to exit
Libya, (we were PI’d) and we’d
collected a huge amount of
stuff in six years. There
were two cars, a couple
of yachts, Persian
carpets a record
collection to die for
and furniture for a
five-bed villa. The
eldest child even had
a battery propelled
car she drove around
the house.
It all had to go — in
seven days.
We could take a suitcase
each and one box, which I
unselfishly filled with the children’s
toys. To their dismay the garden play
centre, with its swings and slide simply
would not fit in.
All very sad, and I still think fondly of the
stuff I gave away or sold for mere dirhams.
Friends promised to send on our most
precious items as soon as we had an address
back in England, but the postal service
between the two countries was non-existent.
We never received any of it.
These days it’s not difficult to research
https://lucindaeclarkeauthor.com

and make sensible choices as to what to
cart halfway around the world. In Arab
countries for example certain products are
not available for women, so I’d pack boxes
and boxes of them which embarrassed the
customs officials the moment they dived
into our suitcases.
Recently, there was extensive rioting and
looting in my home province of KwaZulu-
Natal, and among their targets were the
warehouses belonging to the removal
companies. I was saddened to learn that
a friend’s most precious possessions he’d
left in store before deciding on his final
retirement destination, were gone. Much of
his collections would be of no earthly use to
anyone, but of huge sentimental to him.
I had a similar experience when I filled
three cabin trunks with items I did not want
to take on the boat we chose as our new
home. If we were holed by a container out at
sea, or a playful whale upended us, I would
be too busy saving myself and the children
to worry about mere things.
It’s a long story, but months later only one
trunk was recovered and that was empty.
What did I mourn the most? My photograph
albums. Something you can never get back.
I still don’t have more than a couple of
reminders of my daughters younger than
their late teens.
So, photographs, personal documents like
birth certificates and passports are vital,
but if you are drowning under the weight
of all those knickknacks you own what can
you do? Take a photograph of them, upload
them and write a brief note to remind you
where and when you got it and if you save it
to a memory stick, you can put a lifetime of
memories in your pocket.
28 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA SIMON RATCLIFFE
WHAT IS THE
ROTATOR CUFF ?
The rotator cuff is a very
important part of our shoulder
joint. It is a series of tendons
that maintain the head of the humerus
(ball) in contact with glenoid process
(socket). These tendons are in charge
of shoulder stability through the
contraction of the muscles they are
attached too.
We will start by briefly explaining the
difference between tendons
and ligaments, because
they are in charge of
adding stability to the
shoulder joint.
● Ligaments are
stringy like
structures
that connect
bones
together
within or
around
a joint.
These
ligaments
are in
charge
of setting
limits to avoid
damaging a
joint and are also
in charge of passive
stability.
● Tendons are the end portion
of muscle that attaches to the
bone, these are also like a rope or string
depending on size and strength of said
muscles. There are a couple tendons that
don’t directly connect to muscle and do
unite bone to bone also ( patella tendon)
but we best not get into that. Tendons
allow us to move our joints through the
contraction of muscles and in many cases
are also in charge of active stability.
When talking of the rotator cuff, it is
important to understand that it allows us to
do certain movements regarding
our shoulder, but it is of
upmost important when
it comes to stability.
As I mentioned
earlier, it
allows for the
humerus to
be in contact
with our
glenoid
process,
allowing
us to
move our
shoulder
smoothly
without
losing contact
between
surfaces.
The rotator cuff
tendon is composed
of 4 tendons:
● Supraspinatus, allows
for lateral flexion of the humerus
● Infraspinatus, allows for external rotation
Simon Ratcliffe is a licensed Physiotherapist and Certified Osteopath C.O. for the
SIMON RATCLIFFE
of the humerus
● Teres minor, also allows for external
rotation
● Subescapularis, allows for internal
rotation of the humerus
I mention these names because if you
have suffered a shoulder problem which
required un ultrasound or an MRI scan,
you will recognize the supraspinatus.
The supraspinatus tendon forms the roof of
the rotator cuff, and it is the one that suffers
the most, in fact, it is affected 70-80% of the
time when there is a rotator cuff injury.
The reason for this is that because it forms
the roof of the cuff, it is subject to friction
which either causes irritation or ruptures
of said tendon. This causes tendinitis/
tendinosis, bursitis, osteoarthritis,etc.
So why is it subject to friction?
It is mostly because there is a positional
discrepancy of the head of the humerus
when connecting to its socket. If we then
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
What I do is diagnose the positional
problem, treat this by repositioning the
joint and then give the patient exercises to
help maintain this position. It is as simple
as that.
The recovery time and overall outcome do
depend on how long the problem has been
going on for, and the extent of the damage
to the rotator cuff and shoulder joint. But
this is assessed in the first few sessions and
a realistic prognosis is given.
Remembrance Day
around the world
Armistice Day is on 11 November and
is also known as Remembrance Day. It
marks the day World War One ended,
at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in
1918. A two-minute silence is held at 11am to
remember the people who have died in wars.
This includes World War Two, the Falklands
War, the Gulf War, and conflicts in Afghanistan
and Iraq and present.
Whitehall, London. The National Service of
Remembrance will be held at the Cenotaph at
11am. Whitehall will open to the public at 8am
and thousands will attend.
Royal British Legion (RBL) detachments will
begin to form a Horse Guards Parade at 9am
and will march out from Wellington Barracks an
hour later.
Two minutes silence will be marked,
beginning with a gun salute at Horse Guards
Parse, at 11am.
The service will commence after and seeing
the members of the royal family, military
personnel and dignitaries lay wreaths.
The Nation’s Thank You procession starts at
12.30pm, with 10,000 military men and women,
veterans and members of the public marching
past the Cenotaph to pay respects.
A Service of Commemoration and
Thanksgiving will be held at Westminster Abbey
at 10:30am.
Members of the Armed Forces and other
organisations will be in attendance
The service will include a two-minute silence
at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior
In Canada, Remembrance Day is a public
holiday and federal statutory holiday, as well
as a statutory holiday in all three territories and
in six of the ten provinces. Cayman Islands.
Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts.
The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance
Day. Replica poppies are sold by the Royal
Canadian Legion to provide assistance to
Veterans.
Some of the 54 Commonwealth member
states, such as Canada, the United Kingdom and
Australia, observe the tradition of Remembrance
Day on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day
of the eleventh month. Other nations observe a
solemn day but at different dates. For example,
ANZAC Day is observed in New Zealand on
April 25. In South Africa, Poppy Day is marked
on the Sunday that falls closest to November 11.
Many nations that are not members of the
Commonwealth also observe Remembrance Day
on November 11, including France, Belgium and
Poland.
The United States used to commemorate
Armistice Day on November 11. However, in
1954 they changed the name to Veterans Day.
Well not only Germany, many other countries
don’t celebrate Remembrance Day, such as
Sweden or the Scandinavian countries.
As they do each year, the British community
in Spain marked “Remembrance tide” in many
ways, often with a Church Service on or
near to Remembrance Sunday.
Remembrance Sunday
fell on Sunday 11th

NOVEMBER 2021 | 31
November 2018, exactly 100 years after the guns
fell silent on the Western Front, marking the end
of World War One.
The Poppy Factory is a factory in Richmond,
London, England, where remembrance poppies
are made. It was founded in 1922 to offer
employment opportunities to wounded soldiers
returning from the First World War, creating
remembrance products for the Royal Family and
The Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal.
The Poppy Factory has been supporting veterans
with health conditions for nearly 100 years. They
continue to stand by them on their journey into
employment and beyond.
They set up in a former collar factory on the
Old Kent Road in London. Soon the factory was
employing 50 disabled veterans. The factory
made a million poppies within two months.
In November 1924, the Prince of Wales (later
Edward VIII) visited the Poppy Factory, which
made 27 million poppies that year. Most of the
employees were disabled, and by then there was
a long waiting list for prospective employees.
The old collar factory eventually proved
too small as demand increased, and in 1926
the factory moved to a disused brewery in
Petersham Road, Richmond, Surrey. Housing
for the workforce and their families was built
on adjacent land and in 1932 the present factory
was built. The original factory was demolished
in 1972.
Approximately 30 disabled veterans and
disabled dependents of ex-service personnel are
employed at the Richmond factory to hand-make
remembrance poppies, wreaths and symbols.
Together with around 30 home workers, they
produce approximately 11 million poppies,
135.000 wreaths and 1.1 million remembrance
symbols (originally remembrance crosses,
now a variety of shapes for different religions,
including for ‘no faith’) for The Royal
British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, as
well as special wreaths for the
British Royal Family.
The Poppy Factory also provides
individualised employment support to hundreds
of ex-Service men and women with health
conditions or impairments. A team of regional
Employability Consultants work with veterans
in their communities to provide career guidance,
CV advice, interview coaching, opportunities
with local employers and information about
funding and training sources.
Around 62% of Poppy Factory veterans
experienced mental health conditions and
58% reported physical health challenges, such
as visual impairments and musculoskeletal
problems. Many veterans have a combination of
both mental and physical health challenges.
According to a recent report, the charity’s
“Getting You Back to Work” employability
programme has close fidelity to the IPS model of
Supported Employment. Owing to this tailored
approach, around 75% of Poppy Factory ‘clients’
remain in work for over 12 months.
Since 1928, The Poppy Factory has also
organised the annual Field of Remembrance at
Westminster Abbey.
Established in 1926 and makes approximately
five million remembrance poppies each year.
The poppy’s origins as a symbol of
remembrance lie in the First World War poem
In Flanders Fields by Canadian officer John
McCrae, first published in December 1915.
Its opening lines refer to how the flowers
grew from the graves of soldiers across Western
Europe during the conflict:
and individuals such as Specsavers Ópticas and their
clients who pull together to raise funds for this worthy
cause.
The work of this Foundation is essential for blind
or severely visually impaired people to live as
independently as possible. Going from walking with
a cane to walking with a guide dog represents a great
improvement in their mobility, substantially increasing
the speed and safety of their movements, which
enables them to integrate better into the community
and lead fuller lives. To breed, train and place a guide
dog with someone, costs approximately €40,000 and
today there are more than 400 blind people waiting for
a guide dog in Spain. Fundraising actions like this are
a great help to provide as many guide dogs as possible
for people who really need them.
Walsh’s Wisdom
THE DECK BOY WHO
MADE HISTORY
When in 1959 Michael Walsh was offered a
deck boy’s job on the MV Britannic it never
entered his head that he had been chosen
by fate to be the final link in an ocean-going epic.
Fresh out of sea training school the 16-year-old
cadet leaning slightly forward placed his signature
on the ship’s articles. Returning the pen to the ship’s
officer he thus became the last deck boy on the last
ocean liner in the colours of the White Star Line.
From the liner’s rain-soaked mooring at
Liverpool’s Pier Head, he could see Albion House.
The former head office of the Oceanic Steamship
Company otherwise known as the White Star Line.
In 1912, from the building’s windows were tossed
scrawled notes bearing the names of survivors from
the RMS Titanic catastrophe. It was a crude way to
inform wailing relatives but Albion House those
fateful days was besieged by hysterical people.
Albion House remains today as it did then but the
MV Britannic, the last of the company’s great ocean
liners has since gone to the scrapyards.
When on New Year’s Eve, the deck boy now
a Junior Ordinary Seaman (JOS) signed off the
Britannic it had completed its final transatlantic
regular voyage after three decades of service.
During his 10 months as a rating on the RMS
Britannic ~ the liner was licenced to carry Royal
Mail, Michael had acquired his Steering Ticket and
his Lifeboat Ticket.
Life on board for Michael and other of the ship’s
crew was far from routine. Under officer’s orders
he had risked the wrath of the gods by literally
skimming at full speed the Irish coast; an equivalent
to a pilot flying under Tower Bridge. He had also
sliced an Atlantic whale in half, had fought with
bare knuckles, and been befriended by legends of
the liner.
The audacious and precocious ship’s rating
earned a reputation as a gang leader in the
notoriously tough Hell’s Kitchen situated on the
West Side of Manhattan. He was mentored by
Bosun’s Mate the Manxman Joe Kieg who routinely
decked the toughest seamen as they drank in
waterfront saloons. He had watched aghast as
the same buccaneering bosun smashed to pulp
a notorious fighting cook whilst the Cunard’s
Commodore and liner’s captain looked on and then
looked away.
Was it a good time to be alive? Michael Walsh
smiles: ‘Just being alive was enough.’
The great liners and the golden days of
oceangoing superliners are now gone as have their
crews and they have taken their stories with them.
For this reason, the recollections of one of the last
and indeed possibly the last living witness to tell his
story is a last testament to the White Star Line.
The famous and for some infamous shipping line
had endured the worst maritime disasters in history
at the time. The White Star Line had grown rich
carrying prospectors to the Australian and Yukon
gold rushes.
The MV Britannic had sailed across the graves
of mariners, shipwrecks and the last resting place
of the ill-fated RMS Titanic. In his true story, the
appropriately titled BRITANNIC WAIVES THE
RULES, Michael Walsh (amazon Books and Kindle)
has penned a very fitting tribute to the one shipping
line that made history more than did any other
shipping company.
Walsh’s Wisdom
Lend me your ears
WALSH’S WISDOM
If you are in business there are going to
be occasions when you have to address
an audience. When you are watching
someone else speaking at an event it comes
across as easy. In truth standing up in front of
an audience and setting one’s stall out can be
the most unnerving experience.
Curious as to how speakers respond to such
situations a test was carried out. Several heroic
figures, including a mountaineer and a fighter
pilot were wired up. Whilst doing their highly
stressful ‘day jobs’ the trauma of their doing
so was barely noticeable. However, when
these guinea pigs were wired up before and as
they addressed audiences their heart rate and
blood pressure shot up to the red section on
the gauge.
Constantly referring to notes as you speak
or reading from a written speech is a no-no.
You will still trip over your own tongue and
your presentation will be met with a polite
response but the impact of what you want to
say will be negligible.
My worst experience was when I reluctantly
accepted an invitation to speak before an
audience of several hundred in Washington
DC. It gets worse, the auditorium was situated
a few metres from Capitol Hill and the
attendees were mostly of an academic type.
As I progressed at constantly peered at my
notes. Instinctively, I realised I was making a
spectacle of myself. Then, shoving my notes
to one side, I continued. I was animate and
I spoke passionately. Frankly, I had no idea
how my speech would be received. Frankly,
sweating, I had reached the stage where I
could have cared less.
Finally, I drew a line under my deliver
and waited for several hundred deadpan
expressions and a slow handclap. What I
didn’t expect was thunderous applause from
an audience now standing in its feet, many
rushing to the podium to grasp my hand. Is
there a lesson to be learned? Yes, nothing beats
conviction and compassion.
There is no easy solution. Some find
addressing an audience easy and some find
doing so their worst nightmare. The fortunate
speakers tend to be the exhibitionists of life
and self-confident. The rest of us would prefer
a visit to the dentist. Those called to the
soapbox have their own tricks to help them
through the ordeal. I cottoned on to mine
when I was in my early twenties.
I had two tricks up my sleeve. I never
look at the audience. It is there but for me it
is wallpaper. When I address an audience, I
basically speak to myself aloud. It works, for
me and it might for you too.
The other ploy I learned quite early on. I
noticed that amongst the hundred or so faces
staring up at me there was one always one
soul who appeared to be responding well
to me presentation. Ignoring the rest of the
audience I spoke directly to him or her as
though we were having a one-to-one meeting.
For me, it worked like a charm. The Business
Booster. Michael Walsh Amazon Books and
ANNE RODGER
The Wedding
Part 8
BY
ANNE RODGER
In the late 1940’s my cousin Jean was an
ordinary working-class girl with a job
in Woolworth’s. Her boyfriend, Brian,
was the only child of a wealthy local family,
in the garage business. He was about to go
to University. I was only a little girl at the
time, but over the next few years, whenever
they visited us, Jean always told me that
when they got married, I would be her chief
bridesmaid.
Due to parental opposition, they had a
long time to wait.
When Brian became a fully-qualified
Chartered Accountant his parents finally
gave consent to their marriage. By that time
I was eleven years old and in my first year
at Grammar School.
Jennifer, Brian’s cousin,
was to be the other
bridesmaid. She was at
the same school as me,
but at 17 was in her final
year.
However, we were of
the same height, build
and colouring. Jean asked
my mum if it was OK to
have my long plaits cut
off as Jennifer had short
hair and Jean wanted
us to look as alike as
possible.
Together with our
mothers, Jean, Jennifer
and I went on the bus to Wolverhampton to
choose the dresses. They were of a similar
design - floor length, but Jean’s white dress
was strapless, while Jennifer and I were in
lavender with short lace jackets.
Walking down the aisle after the ceremony,
as chief bridesmaid, I was on the arm of
the best man, following behind bride and
groom.
The Reception was at the very posh
George Hotel in the centre of Walsall. Mum
told me, years later, that she and dad were
approached by the best man, who asked
their permission to ask me out on a date.
She said that the poor man was gobsmacked
when she asked if he knew that I was eleven
In the morning, Cheif Bridesmaid at Jean and Brian’s Wedding in Walsall.

years old. He was speechless and retreated
backwards - muttering apologies and no
doubt wishing the ground would open up
and swallow him.
During the afternoon, mum, dad, my
brother and I, went up to a room that
had been reserved for us, in which to get
changed as dad’s only other niece was
getting married on the same day, but in
Birmingham. Jean and Brian had booked a
taxi for us to be taken to the wedding in the
afternoon.
Having changed, we came down the main
staircase of the hotel, where we had to walk
through the ongoing reception in order to go
out of the front door to the waiting taxi. As
we pushed through, mum said she searched
the faces, looking for the best man. She
wanted to see his reaction when he saw what
I looked like as a typical eleven-year-old - in
my slip-on shoes, pleated skirt and yellow
Kangol beret.
44 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA A MEDIUM RARE
The fading of Summer and the blend into Autumn
is a time of subtle changes and shorter days, but
I kind of like that. I would always prefer to live
where there are changes to the seasons and they are a
predictable force of energy in an ever changing World.
I love the colours of nature as fruits ripen, especially if
I can pick pomegranates from the trees. Love to walk
in the little woods with my dog and see the changes
of the colours of leaves and wear a jumper. I do not
mourn the Summer, but I hope that next year there
will be another one for me, and I shall be prepared
for the balmy days and nights once more. I celebrate
Halloween and can have nights under a blanket
watching the television, and put a duvet once more on
my bed and sleep warmly. I will soon have oranges at
my door and make jam and I have a pumpkin to carve
for Trick or Treat.
That’s pretty well what life has been for many
recently. Trick or Treat. The trick of life is to be
balanced and well and not to lose hold of that energy
that you need. Living with the positive health that you
deserve to have and having that wonderful feeling of
wellbeing means everything in terms of day to day life
right now. Being tricked is another kettle of fish, and
this can lead to unhappiness and trauma. As for treats,
well deserving those little things that help us along
the way are the best treats of all. We each deserve,
and if you add faith to this then you really do have
everything, and everything goes into place at the same
time.
Spirit can help you on your journey whenever you
need them. They respond to faith and are fuelled by
belief, but whatever you choose to believe in will be
the right thing for you. Believe in anything that helps
you through, but Spirit has a way of reminding you
that you are unique and blessed and that life holds
something very special and highly individual for you.
They will never judge you because they see you as
the great individual that you are. What they will do is
to allow you to see things from different angles, and
to contribute towards your positivity of life here on
Earth. For that matter we are all of us Spirit living in a
body and the body is merely our transit system in the
World.
As changes come and fear subsides we can share in
the abundant energy that is afforded to us by Spirit.
Those in the Spirit World have had at least one life
here on Earth and now they share their findings and
get to the very bottom of things that need to be done
in an honest, frank and spiritual way. Our faith may be
tested but by having belief we are all protected in other
ways against the negativity of others and their failings.
We do not profess to be perfect, but we can tune into
our energies and share them wholeheartedly with
those who really need our tenderest loving care; whilst
still being ourselves.
We are not slaves to Spirit, neither are we their
experiment. Life to us has to be fundamentally
experimental, however, and we have already learned
much from the vagaries that are formed there in
the Book of Life. Our personal book may not yet be
available for publishing, but we hold on dearly to
aspects of the past, whilst we live for today and aspire
to whatever tomorrow may bring us. Our treasured
secrets and true emotions can live alongside us in the
World of today. Every day we can be thankful that
we have the strongest of energies to see us through,
and both the courage and the wisdom to know the
difference that we can make here on Earth by sharing,
caring and loving. We all have something to give, and
whatever that may be then may it be enjoyed by those
who need it.
Always keep love safely within you and love
yourself, because self love is an essential part of the
process of abundance, and there is no greater gift that
we can have than to know ourselves, who we are and
why we are the way that we are. We know that our
love is a gift to share and that others need us from time
to time to assist with the duties of their lives as we can
comfort, protect and strengthen whosoever needs us.
Life is a blanket we can use to keep out the chills and it
offers layers of protection to any who may need it. We
are not alone and what we do have we can share.
Autumn rain will wash away the debris of Summer.
Nature’s best gardener is the Autumnal wind and the
ripe berries and fruits of another season will become
our delight. As the nights draw in and the days bring a
touch of chill we must never forget that we are a great
part of the changes to come and that the World will
only really listen when it just may be too late. However
we have heard, taken things into account and readily
acted upon whatever remedy we can muster to heal
and provide that which others just do not have, and
hopefully they will appreciate this for all the right
reasons.
CHANGE YOUR LIFE
Are you a Co Dependant?
I
am asking this question because co
dependency is a growing problem
among people today, due to the fact
that in the 1960’s the way of thinking put
forward then by professionals who were
dealing with personal problems was
that we were all VICTIMS of some past
experiences and therefore couldn’t make
any changes in our lives. This is NOT true.
As long as you are in control mentally
of your day to day living, then dramatic
changes can be made, and a massive
difference can be experienced with some
help at the beginning to help you to see
things differently. That is all it takes.
Making changes brings about different
results...Many people would agree with
that after seeing and handling things
differently.
Just check out the following questions to
see which ones apply to you.........
1. Are you always worried about others’
opinions of you?
2. Have you ever lived with someone who
belittles you?
3. Do you think the opinions of others more
important than your own?
4. Do you feel rejected when others spend
time with THEIR friends?
5. Do you doubt your ability to be who you
want to be?
6. Are you uncomfortable expressing your
true feelings to others?
7. Do you have difficulty accepting
compliments?
8. Do you have difficulty talking to people
in authority?
9. Are you confused about who you are as
a person?
10. Do you have trouble saying “no” when
asked for help?
11. Do you have trouble asking for help?
12. Do you not like yourself?
The first step in changing unhealthy
behaviour is understanding it. It could be
important to educate ourselves about the
cycle of addiction and how it extends into
our relationships.
People find freedom, love, and serenity
in their recovery. Having self esteem built
up again can be the most valuable thing,
because when we value ourselves we can
handle almost anything life throws at us.
The more we understand co-dependency
the better we can cope with its effects.
Taking in more information could help
some of us to live a healthier, more fulfilling
life.
Maybe it has been helpful to understand a
little more about something that affects an
awful lot of us, pulling some down to the
depths of despair. Try to appreciate the fact
that it can be overcome and it can be dealt
with. ...it can all be set straight, if that is
what you want to do.
Violet King
Take care...till the next time!

Top 10 Health Benefits of
Stopping Smoking
In at Number 1……Better sex!
Stopping smoking improves the body’s
blood flow, so improves sensitivity.
Women are more easily aroused and
men have a less chance of suffering from
erectile dysfunction. Statistically nonsmokers
are three times more appealing to
the opposite sex than smokers.
2. Improved fertility
Quitting smoking improves the lining of
the womb and can make men’s sperm more
potent. Miscarriages are less common in
non-smokers and for those undergoing
I.V.F. successful conception is more likely.
3. More energy
Circulation improves within 2-12 weeks of
stopping smoking. This makes all physical
activities much easier. Quitting also boosts
your immune system, making it easier
to fight off colds and flu. The increase in
oxygen in the body makes ex-smokers less
tired.
4. Better breathing
People breathe more easily and cough less
when they give up smoking because their
lung capacity improves by up to 10% within
nine months. In your 20s and 30s, the effect
of smoking on your lung capacity may not
be noticeable until you go for a run, but
lung capacity naturally diminishes
with age. In later years, having
maximum lung capacity can
mean the difference between
having an active, healthy
old age and wheezing
when going for a walk or
climbing the stairs.
5. Less stress
Scientific studies show
that people’s stress levels
are lower after they
stop smoking. Nicotine
addiction makes smokers
stressed from the ‘withdrawal’
between cigarettes. The pleasant
feeling of satisfying that craving is
only temporary and is not a real cure
for stress.
6. Improved smell and taste
Kicking the smoking habit gives your
senses of smell and taste a boost. The
body is recovering from being dulled by
the hundreds of toxic chemicals found in
cigarettes.
7. Younger looking skin
Stopping smoking has been found to slow
facial ageing and delay the appearance of
wrinkles. The skin of a non-smoker gets
more nutrients, including oxygen, and can
reverse the sallow, lined complexion that
smokers often have.
8. Whiter teeth
Giving up tobacco stops teeth becoming
stained, and you’ll have fresher breath.
Ex-smokers are less likely than smokers
to get gum disease and lose their teeth
prematurely.
9. Healthier loved ones
Passive smoking increases a non-smoker’s
risk of lung cancer, heart disease and stroke.
Second-hand smoke makes children twice at
risk of chest illnesses, including pneumonia,
croup, bronchitis, ear infections, wheezing
and asthma. They also have three times
the risk of getting lung cancer in later life
compared with children who live with nonsmokers.
And finally at number 10…….Longer life!
Half of all long-term smokers die early from
smoking-related diseases. Men who quit
smoking by 30 add 10 years to their life.
People who kick the habit at 60 add three
years to their life. In other words, it’s never
too late to benefit from stopping.
54 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA PAWS FOR THOUGHT
I
am thinking of Christmas which is
really just around the corner, I have sent
my letter to Santa, as he may need my
help again to pull his sleigh! I did well in
past years. My step brothers Bentley
and Alfie want also to come along
again to help. They did a good job
last year. I suppose I could ask Santa
as they both worked well together
last time sorting out the presents.
Bentley, Alfie and I are all spoilt dogs
and love our Christmas presents. I
hide my toys and then enjoy playing
with theirs. However, I do let them get
their own way quite a lot of the time. Not
all my furry friends would have such a fun
Christmas as we have, so please give those
less fortunate a thought and adopt or foster
for Christmas.
We are all getting excited about
Christmas.
By the way, Bentley and I had a fantastic
Halloween and I have to say Bentley was a
“Little Devil” but very cute and lovely. Alfie
was not keen to dress up. Happy to run
round with toys in his mouth.
Bentley managed to enjoy playing with
his “fancy dress head gear” and we had to
go and buy another set as he was a “Devil”
with one ear. However, he is cute and gets
away with the odd little thing he does as he
has beautiful eyes. He wins humans over!!
As I mentioned before I pulled a leg
muscle and could not put my paw to the
floor. My family contacted Carol of Eternal
Bentley and Tyson together in their
Halloween costumes. .
When Bittori’s husband starts receiving
58 | OUT AND ABOUT COSTA BLANCA CELEBRITY PROFILE
JACQUES COUSTEAU
Jacques-Yves Cousteau commonly
known in English as Jacques
Cousteau; born 11 June 1910 – died
25 June 1997 was a French naval
officer, explorer, conservationist,
filmmaker, innovator, scientist, photographer,
author and researcher
who studied the sea and all forms
of life in water. He co-developed
the Aqua-Lung, pioneered marine
conservation.
Cousteau described his underwater
world research in series of books,
perhaps most successful being his
first book, The Silent World: A Story
of Undersea Discovery and Adventure,
published in 1953. Cousteau
also directed films, most notably
the documentary adaptation of the
book, The Silent World, which won
a Palme d’or at the 1956 Cannes
Film Festival. He remained the only
person to win a Palme d’Or for a
documentary film, until Michael
Moore won the award in 2004 for
Fahrenheit 9/11.
Cousteau’s comment. “The sea, the
great unifier, is man’s only hope.
Now, as never before,
the old phrase has a literal meaning:
We are all in the same boat.”
Cousteau had one brother, Pierre-
Antoine. In 1930, he entered the
École Navale and graduated as a
gunnery officer. After an automobile
accident cut short his career in naval
aviation, Cousteau indulged his
interest in the sea.
In Toulon, where he was serving on
the Condorcet, Cousteau carried out
his first underwater experiments,
thanks to his friend Philippe Tailliez
who in 1936 lent him some Fernez
underwater goggles, predecessors
of modern swimming goggles.
Cousteau also belonged to the
information service of the French
Navy, and was sent on missions to
Shanghai and Japan (1935–1938)
and in the USSR (1939).
On 12 July 1937 he married Simone
Melchior, with whom he had two
sons, Jean-Michel (born 1938) and
Philippe (1940–1979). His sons
took part in the adventures of the
Calypso. In 1991, one year after his
wife Simone’s death from cancer,
he married Francine Triplet. They
already had a daughter Diane
Cousteau (born 1980) and a son
Pierre-Yves Cousteau (born 1982),
born during Cousteau’s marriage to
his first wife.
In 1943, they made the film Shipwrecks,
in which they used two of
the very first Aqua-Lung prototypes.
These prototypes were made
in Boulogne following instructions
from Cousteau. When making the
film, Cousteau could not find the
necessary blank reels of movie
film, but had to buy hundreds of
small still camera film reels the
same width, intended for a make of
child’s camera, and cemented them
together to make long reels.
During the 1940s, Cousteau is
credited with improving the aqualung
design which gave birth to
the open-circuit scuba technology
used today. Cousteau started diving
with Fernez goggles in 1936, and
in 1939 used the self-contained
underwater breathing apparatus
invented in 1926. Cousteau was not
satisfied with the length of time he
could spend underwater with the
Le Prieur apparatus so he improved
it to extend underwater duration
by adding a demand regulator,
invented in 1942 by Émile Gagnan.
In 1943 Cousteau tried out the first
prototype aqua-lung which finally
made extended underwater exploration
possible.
In 1948, between missions of mine
clearance, underwater exploration
and technological and physiological
tests, Cousteau undertook a first
campaign in the Mediterranean
on board the sloop Élie Monnier.
A small team also undertook the
exploration of the Roman wreck of
Mahdia (Tunisia). It was the first
underwater archaeology operation
using autonomous diving, opening
the way for scientific underwater
archaeology. Cousteau brought back
from there the Carnets diving film
(presented and preceded with the
Cannes Film Festival 1951). In 1949,
Cousteau left the French Navy.
In 1950, he founded the French
Oceanographic Campaigns and
leased a ship called Calypso from
Thomas Loel Guinness for a symbolic
one franc a year. Cousteau
refitted the Calypso as a mobile
laboratory for field research and as
his principal vessel for diving and
filming.
Cousteau correctly predicted the existence
of the echo location abilities
of porpoises. He reported that his
research vessel, the Élie Monier, was
heading to the Straits of Gibraltar
and noticed a group of porpoises
following them. Cousteau changed
course a few degrees off the optimal
course to the center of the strait,
and the porpoises followed for a
few minutes, then diverged toward
mid-channel again. It was evident
that they knew where the optimal
course lay, even if the humans did
not. Cousteau concluded that the
cetaceans had something like sonar,
which was a relatively new feature

SP-350, an experimental underwater
vehicle which could reach a depth
of 350 meters. The successful experiment
was quickly repeated in 1965
with two vehicles which reached
500 meters.
In October 1960, a large amount
of radioactive waste was going to
be discarded in the Mediterranean
Sea by the Commissariat à l’énergie
atomique (CEA). The CEA argued
that the dumps were experimental
in nature, and that French
oceanographers such as Vsevelod
Romanovsky had recommended
it. Romanovsky and other French
scientists, including Louis Fage and
Jacques Cousteau, repudiated the
claim, saying that Romanovsky had
in mind a much smaller amount.
The CEA claimed that there was little
circulation (and hence little need
for concern) at the dump site between
Nice and Corsica, but French
public opinion sided with the
oceanographers rather than with the
CEA atomic energy scientists. The
CEA chief, Francis Perrin, decided
to postpone the dump. Cousteau organized
a publicity campaign which
in less than two weeks gained wide
popular support. The train carrying
the waste was stopped by women
and children sitting on the railway
tracks, and it was sent back to its
origin.
American television companies
created the series The Undersea
World of Jacques Cousteau, with the
character of the commander in the
red bonnet inherited from standard
diving dress intended to give the
films a “personalized adventure”
style. This documentary series ran
for ten years from 1966 to 1976. A
second documentary series, The
Cousteau Odyssey, ran from 1977 to
1982, among others.
In 1973, along with his two sons and
Frederick Hyman, he created the
Cousteau Society for the Protection
of Ocean Life, Frederick Hyman
being its first President; it now has
more than 300,000 members.
In 1976, Cousteau uncovered the
wreck of HMHS Britannic and
found the wreck of the French 17thcentury
ship-of-the-line La Therese
in coastal waters of Crete.
On 28 June 1979, while the Calypso
was on an expedition to Portugal,
his second son, Philippe, his preferred
and designated successor and
with whom he had co-produced
all his films since 1969, died in a
Catalina flying boat crash in the
Tagus river near Lisbon. Cousteau
was deeply affected. He called his
then eldest son, the architect Jean-
Michel Cousteau, to his side. This
collaboration lasted 14 years.
From 1980 to 1981, he was a regular
on the animal reality show Those
Amazing Animals, along with Burgess
Meredith,Priscilla Presley, and
Jim Stafford.
Cousteau’s Diving Saucer
Francine Triplet currently continues
her husband’s work as the head
of the Cousteau Foundation and
Cousteau Society.
On 11 January 1996, Calypso was
rammed and sunk in Singapore
Harbour by a barge. The Calypso
was refloated and towed home to
France.
Cousteau’s legacy includes more
than 120 television documentaries,
more than 50 books, and an
environmental protection foundation
with 300,000 members and his
submarine near Oceanographic
Museum in Monaco.
The Cousteau Society is currently
attempting to turn the original
Calypso into a museum and it is
raising funds to build a successor
vessel, the Calypso II.
In his last years, after marrying
again, Cousteau became involved in
a legal battle with his son Jean-Michel
over Jean-Michel licensing the
Cousteau name for a South Pacific
resort, resulting in Jean-Michel
Cousteau being ordered by the
court not to encourage confusion
between his for-profit business and
his father’s non-profit endeavours.
What happened to the Cousteau
Society?
Although the Cousteau Society, a
nonprofit environmental organization
founded by the explorer, set
out to restore it after Mr. Cousteau’s
death, there have been lawsuits and
disputes that have left the boat’s
wooden frame weathering and its
famous false nose with an underwater
chamber rusting away.
In 2007, the International Watch
Company introduced the IWC
Aquatimer Chronograph “Cousteau
Divers” Special Edition. The
proceeds from the timepieces’
sales were partially donated to the
non-profit organization involved
into conservation of marine life and
preservation of tropical coral reefs
Though he was not particularly a
religious man, Cousteau believed
that the teachings of the different
major religions provide valuable
ideals and thoughts to protect the
environment.
Jacques-Yves Cousteau died of
a heart attack on 25 June 1997 in
Paris, aged 87. He was buried in a
Roman Catholic Christian funeral in
the family vault at Saint-André-de-
Cubzac in France. An homage was
paid to him by the city by the inauguration
of a “rue du Commandant
Cousteau”, a street which runs out
to his native house, where a commemorative
plaque was affixed.
Philippe Cousteau. Inspired by
the legacy of his grandfather of
Jacques Cousteau, Philippe is an
multi Emmy-Nominated TV host
and producer as well as an author,
speaker, and social entrepreneur. He
and his wife Ashlan are the stars of
The Travel Channel’s newest series
Caribbean Pirate Treasure.
