Bowman is to front this year’s BBC Scotland 

Hogmanay show. Edith will be taking 

viewers up to the Hogmanay Bells on both 

BBC One Scotland and the BBC Scotland 

channel. Says Edith: “Hogmanay in 

Scotland is such an iconic celebration, 

recognised all over the world. I’ve watched 

this on telly since I was a wee girl, to be 

asked to host the show and bring in the 

bells with everyone is HUGE for me. We 

plan on opening the door to 2022 with a 

fantastic line-up of music and chat and raise 

a glass to a new year and toast what we are 

all hoping will be a happy and healthy

SCOTTISH NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA

Edinburgh. This autumn sees the welcome 

return of the Scottish National Jazz 

Orchestra's good friend Kurt Elling to 

Scotland’s shores for a four-city concert 

series. The Grammy award-winning singer 

joins us in November for ‘Apparition Bridge’, 

an evening of powerful, modern music 

featuring European composers of great 

creative jazz. 


24 NOVEMBER 

JAWS :: At The Mash House, Edinburgh. 

JAWS take to the road this winter for their 

first live dates since 2019. The band’s new 

limited edition book includes intimate 

behind the scenes photographs and 

captivating images from the stage during 

the band’s 2019 tour dates in Bristol, 

Southampton, Oxford, Nottingham, 

Liverpool, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Belfast, 

Dublin, Leeds and Coventry. Speaking about 

the book, Connor elaborates: "Originally 

there was no intention to make a book, we 

had Peter out on the road with us taking 

pictures but we thought it would be cool to 

use all the photos from one period of time 

to create something physical rather than 

images just sitting on Instagram or my hard 

drive for the rest of time. We’re all really 

happy with how the book has turned out, 

and hope that other people can find just as 

much enjoyment out of it as we do flicking

DJANGO DJANGO :: At The Mash House, 

Edinburgh. Back in the old world at the start 

of 2020, our psychedelic punk heroes The 

Lovely Eggs were primed to release their 

new album ‘I Am Moron’ – their greatest 

work yet, over-flowing with political venom 

and fresh ideas, set to a gloriously 

independent noise. Then, of course, the 

pandemic happened. The Lovely Eggs 

pushed ahead, and the album came out to 

critical-acclaim and indie chart-topping 

status, but their plans to tour it far and wide 

were obviously scuppered. At first, their UK 

tour was rescheduled to just two months 

later, thinking there’s no way the pandemic 

could last more than a few weeks…. Fast 

forward a year, their UK tour has been 

rebooked independently by the band at least 

five times and The Lovely Eggs are still yet 

to play the new album live, but new tour 

dates are now on sale for 2022.

band recorded the remaining three songs

Kurt Elling reunites with the Scottish National 

Jazz Orchestra for Apparition Bridge concerts

One of the world’s leading jazz 

singers, Kurt Elling joins 

internationally acclaimed 

saxophonist Tommy Smith and 

the Scottish National Jazz 

Orchestra (SNJO) for a 4-date 

Scottish tour in November. 

Chicago-born Elling, who has won two Grammy 

awards and been nominated a further fifteen times, 

has been described by the New York Times as “the 

stand-out male singer of our time.” He has also 

topped the prestigious Downbeat magazine critics 

and readers polls for fourteen consecutive years. 

Tommy Smith, the SNJO’s founder and artistic 

director, says, “Few singers in the world bring to 

bear the unique combination of artistic depth, 

intellectual breadth and soulful delivery that our 

friend Kurt Elling does.” 

Over four previous tours and appearances together 

at London Jazz Festival and leading the European 

festival, Jazz sous les Pommiers, in France, Elling and 

the SNJO have developed a strong partnership that 

has brought audiences to their feet with a repertoire 

ranging from swinging Frank Sinatra classics to 

interpretations of more contemporary material and 

items from the praise song canon. 

For this all-new concert series -- exclusive to 

Scotland -- the team will perform freshly-conceived 

arrangements and recently composed lyrics to the 

works of Europe's most exciting contemporary 

composers; including Norwegian saxophonist Jan 

Garbarek, Danish bassist Anne Mette Iversen, 

France-based Ivorian drummer Anna Pacéo, and the 

late Swedish pianist and leader of the popular, 

trailblazing EST group, Esbjörn Svennson. 

“This project promises to reconnect us all through 

music as we span the ethereal chasms between the 

ancient and the future, between sorrow and joy, and 

between time and timelessness,” says Elling. “The 

combination of talents at work, including the 

searching eloquence of saxophone master Tommy 

Smith and the superb SNJO provides the makings of 

a powerful and unique musical regrouping.” 

When Kurt Elling went to the Queen’s Hall in 

Edinburgh in the late 1980s to see a young 

saxophonist people were talking about, little did he 

imagine that one day they would be on that same 

stage together. 

Elling, who was studying divinity at Edinburgh 

University on a year’s secondment from the 

University of Chicago, had no inkling either that, 

within a few years, he would sign to one of the great 

jazz record labels, Blue Note. 

Jazz was a new interest. A couple of university 

friends had introduced him to albums by 

saxophonists Dexter Gordon and John Coltrane and 

every Friday they would go to the Queen’s Hall. 

Fridays at the former church in Clerk Street were 

then a guaranteed source of top jazz. 

Elling remembers seeing trumpeter Don Cherry and 

two saxophonists, Kansas-born Bobby Watson and a 

local player who had already toured the world with 

vibes virtuoso Gary Burton and was developing an 

international reputation, Tommy Smith. Elling 

became a fan. Now they’re friends and regular 

collaborators and they now are set to open this tour 

at the Queen’s Hall. 

Back in Chicago, Elling failed his masters degree by 

one credit. Instead of becoming a professor of 

divinity, as intended, he started frequenting 

Chicago’s jazz clubs. 

Elling had always sung and hearing two significant 

influences, singers Mark Murphy and Jon Hendricks, 

Elling thought, that’s what I want to do. 

These days he’s widely considered to be the best jazz 

singer in the world, and he has also topped the 

prestigious Downbeat magazine critics and readers 

polls for fourteen consecutive years. 

“For me, singing jazz is as much about listening as it 

is actually singing,” he says. “I’ve tried to learn from 

every one of the great jazz singers, to understand 

what made them great and what their contribution to 

the development of jazz singing has been.” 

Elling learned from some of Chicago’s top 

instrumentalists too. By day he worked for a removal 

company and by night he sat in with musicians 

including the legendary saxophonist Von Freeman, 

who took Elling singer under his wing. 

Then, one night, Elling blagged his way onstage with 

the pianist who would help to shape his career, 

Laurence Hobgood. They made a demo tape and sent 

it to the then head of Blue Note Records, Bruce 

Lundvall. Lundvall played the tape while driving and 

what he heard made him pull over to listen properly. 

He immediately set out to sign Elling before any 

other label could and singer and company went on to 

forge a successful partnership. 

Elling’s song choices have often surprised jazz 

listeners who expect singers to concentrate on the 

Great American Songbook. His album The Gate, for 

instance, featured songs by singer-songwriter Joe 

Jackson and prog rockers King Crimson. 

“I’m fortunate that I spend a lot of time on the road 

so I can indulge my intuition as far as repertoire 

goes,” he says. “Some songs are worked out in my 

head and then road tested until we have 

arrangements we’re happy with. But I also like to 

leave the possibility open for some instant magic to 

happen in the studio. That’s what happened with the 

King Crimson song Matte Kudasai. It’s actually one of 

a whole lot of songs from that band and that era that 

could be worked into the jazz canon.” 

For Elling, who is delighted to be touring Scotland 

with Smith and the orchestra he directs for the fifth 

time, the concert will span all the emotions and help 

to reconnect people after the Covid shutdown.

Back in the old world at the start of 2020, 

our psychedelic punk heroes The Lovely 

Eggs were primed to release their new 

album ‘I Am Moron’ – their greatest work 

yet, over-flowing with political venom and 

fresh ideas, set to a gloriously independent 

noise. Then, of course, the pandemic 

happened. The Lovely Eggs pushed ahead, 

and the album came out to critical-acclaim 

and indie chart-topping status, but their 

plans to tour it far and wide were obviously 

scuppered. At first, their UK tour was 

rescheduled to just two months later, 

thinking there’s no way the pandemic could 

last more than a few weeks…. Fast forward 

a year, their UK tour has been rebooked 

independently by the band at least five 

times and The Lovely Eggs are still yet to 

play the new album live, but new tour dtaes

CHUBBY and the GANG :: At Think Tank, 

Newcastle. Fast rising London punk 5-piece 

Chubby and the Gang have announced a 

bumper 40-date tour of the UK and Ireland 

through November and December of this 

year offering a chance for many to finally 

see just why they've become one of the 

most exciting and talked-about punk bands 

in the world over the past year. Fronted by 

Manning (a former cabbie who now also 

works as an electrician), Chubby and the 

Gang have been leading a pack of bands 

coming out of a new wave of British 

Hardcore. Speed Kills was one of the critical 

surprises of the year thanks to its 

unrelentingly fun concoction of hardcore, 

pub rock, doo wop, and blues. The album 

was produced by Jonah Falco of F**ked Up, 

and boasts songs of deep substance and 

political conscience with a precise sense of 

time and place. It received an 8.0 Pitchfork 

review, Stereogum praised its “massive 

barroom gang choruses, power chords at 

breakneck tempos, rock spelled R-A-W-K 

and visceral gratification,” while The 

Guardian declared them "UK punk's most 

vital new band" and NME called them "the

TROY REDFERN on tour with 'WILLE & 

THE BANDITS' :: At The Cluny, Newcastle. 

Slide guitarist and singer-songwriter, Troy 

Redfern, dubbed by the British press as “the 

king of slide guitar,". Troy cut his teeth and 

refined his style over the last few years, 

playing festival main stages and blazing a 

trail across Europe, Scandinavia, and 

Russia. He’s also become a well-known 

draw on the UK Blues Rock festival circuit, 

playing alongside rock luminaries including 

Robert Plant. “Troy is a passionate, intense, 

free-spirited musician whose ferocious slide 

guitar style twists and turns timeless 

themes and ideas to his own ends. He’s a 

musical visionary unafraid to trample on the 

boundaries of restricting labels,” said Blues 

Matters Magazine. The forthcoming studio 

album is a culmination everything Troy has 

learnt so far on his musical journey, and, 

more importantly, brings into sharp focus a 

much tighter song-writing and more

THE LOVELY EGGS :: At The Cluny, 

Newcastle. Back in the old world at the start 

of 2020, our psychedelic punk heroes The 

Lovely Eggs were primed to release their 

new album ‘I Am Moron’ – their greatest 

work yet, over-flowing with political venom 

and fresh ideas, set to a gloriously 

independent noise. Then, of course, the 

pandemic happened. The Lovely Eggs 

pushed ahead, and the album came out to 

critical-acclaim and indie chart-topping 

status, but their plans to tour it far and wide 

were obviously scuppered. At first, their UK 

tour was rescheduled to just two months 

later, thinking there’s no way the pandemic 

could last more than a few weeks…. Fast 

forward a year, their UK tour has been 

rebooked independently by the band at 

least five times and The Lovely Eggs are still 

yet to play the new album live, but new tour 

dates are now on sale for 2022.
