GOD’s PLAN FOR GIVING
Tithing Income Last Week: $14,451.50
Income Same Week Last Year: $14,259.75
From Father Davis: “To be grateful is to recognize the love of
God in everything that He has given us.”
From the Pews: “I had always tithed on part of my income. As
I was considering the large jump it would take to tithe from my
total income, I had household appliances fail. However, [they]
all could be fixed under the warranty. I took this as God’s way
of telling me to trust in His care.”
Monday, June 1 st - Deacon Tony will explore the basic tenets and history associated with the Nicene Creed and the Apostles’ Creed. We will
examine both creedal statements from the perspective: (1) as declarations of Christian belief; (2) as symbols of our belief in the Trinity; (3) as a
narrative of the history of salvation; (4) that our God transcends the world, and at the same time enters into history and lives amongst us a Jesus.
Tuesday, June 23 rd - Fr. Davis will examine and explain the church’s teachings on Heaven, Hell and Purgatory.
This is the third in a series of impressions by some of the participants who made the Journey through the first half of Book 1 (the second half of
Book 1 will be continued in the Fall 2009).
My Why Catholic? Experience by Greg Birrer
Last fall I was asked to lead a Why Catholic? small community group. I was more than a little concerned as I am a product of the public
school/CCD system and have forgotten more than I know about my faith. Nevertheless, I was assured that I didn’t have to be an expert and that I
would just be a facilitator, so I said yes.
Our group met on Sunday nights and was comprised of mostly post Vatican II, non-retired folks. I’m sure we were all nervous in the beginning,
but I remember fretting all day on that first Sunday. Although I was extremely nervous, the first meeting went well with everyone participating to
an extent that my wife and I had not expected. Our group seemed to click from the beginning. By the second meeting the group bonded further.
When we began the faith-sharing segment of the program, it spread like fire until each member shared some aspect of their faith. At one point,
we joked about how we were opening up to each other – something we had rarely experienced with other Catholics – and we liked it! It was sort
of like un-corking a bottle. You could almost feel the relief and satisfaction as we in turn shared stories and faith experiences with each other.
For example, one person would reveal a favorite method in which they pray while two others would interject how they thought they were the
only ones who did that! In addition to faith sharing there were readings from the Bible and the catechism that helped us fill the gaps in our
religious knowledge. By the third meeting we had learned to support and pray for each other.
Then there was the “Living the Good News” activity near the end of each session. This was where we decided on an outward activity to do
during the coming week to help us begin to live the faith in a more active way. At first, I was skeptical of this aspect of the program as I thought
no one would do it or like doing it, but the group embraced this practice as well. The group members were doing things during the week and
then sharing their experiences at the next meeting. These activities ranged from taking a prayerful nature walk to reaching out to troubled coworkers.
We had many great discussions on the results of these living-the-faith activities.
I can honestly say that this was the most prayerful and Blessed Lenten season that I have ever experienced. What was also wonderful was the
way my wife and I continued to have discussions long after everyone had left the meetings. We plan on continuing in the Why Catholic?
program, and I will continue as SCL in the fall as most of the members have already asked if we can keep the group together. I found this
program very worthy of my time and I hope you will consider participating this fall.
Interfaith Baccalaureate Service
For All Graduating High School Seniors
The Roxbury Clergy Council is sponsoring an
Interfaith Baccalaureate Service for all
graduating high school seniors in the township.
This year’s service will be held here at St.
service allows graduates a time and place to
thank God publicly and together as a class for all
the gifts He’s given them through their grammar
school and high school years. It’s also a time to ask for His blessing and
guidance as they enter into college and the next stage in their life. The
Roxbury High School Choir and Brass Ensemble will add to this very
beautiful and special evening. Several high school students from the many
