We seem better prepared to prevent the next pandemic, and we now can turn our thoughts to gratitude and celebrations of many faiths. TWO MORE ARTISTS WHO CONTRIBUTED
Significant aspects of the rebellion
reacting to the quiet hatred of LGBTQ
people following WWII came from the
artists of New York City. The previous
issue of Desert Daily Guide discussed the
1950-70s artists Robert Rauschenberg
and Jasper Johns who were subtle art
activists against the oppression that was
becoming more prominent from far-right
religious groups and sold to politicians
and the public. Rauschenberg and
Johns integrated elusive components
The Stonewall police raid in New York
defensive reactions from the LGBTQ
community. The brazen overreaction of
the police raid on the gay bar Stonewall
woke the gay, lesbian, and trans
community and caused them,
this time to rebel. Prior to this, people
identified as homosexual or lesbian
Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus to
Present “Sparkle, Twinkle, Jingle!”
Under the Artistic Direction of Jerry R. Soria-Foust
w/ Special Guest Broadway Star Michele McConnell
(Palm Springs, CA) – Wednesday, November 10, 2021...
The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus (PSGMC) is back
and ready to perform for its spectacular holiday show
“Sparkle, Twinkle, Jingle!” at the Palm Springs Museum
Annenberg Theater Friday, December 10, Saturday,
December 11 and Sunday, December 12. The Chorus
is proud to welcome its new artistic director Jerry R.
Soria-Foust, who will premiere his talents in their annual
fun-filled holiday show.
This year’s auditions brought in 27 new singers in one
of the most diverse and talented freshman classes in
the Chorus’ 23-year history. Along with many seasoned
members, the 80+ singers will sparkle, put a smile on
your face, illuminate the season and leave you wanting
more while singing the shows iconic songs.
Soria-Foust has assembled a program filled with
traditional selections like “Oh, Holy Night” and nontraditional
“We Are Lights” (The Chanukah Song) by
Stephen Schwartz and “Christmas in Palm Springs.” As
audiences have come to expect, there will be a few
surprises, songs in four languages and heartfelt musical
moments that only Palm Springs’ official gay men’s
chorus can provide. The program also includes “Glow,” by
Eric Whitacre, “Pure Imagination,” from Willy Wonka and
“Sparklejollytwinklejingley” from Elf the Musical. Two of
PSGMC’s most valuable talents are Joel Baker as Principal
Accompanist and Martin Coogan, who provides ASL.
This year, the Chorus welcomes Broadway star Michele
McConnell from Andrew Lloyd Weber’s The Phantom of
the Opera. Michele proudly made her Broadway debut
in The Phantom of the Opera. During her 7-1/2 years in
Phantom, Michele had the privileged distinction to be
the longest-running Carlotta in Broadway history, with
over 2200 performances in the role to her credit and to
perform as Carlotta for the 10,000th Broadway show as
well as the 25th Anniversary performance.
with The Utah Symphony, The Music Man in Concert with
The Pacific Symphony, Festival of Carols Guest Soloist
with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir & Chamber
Orchestra, Camelot (Natl. Tour w/Robert Goulet), Beauty
and the Beast (Montreal/Las Vegas), San Diego Comic
Opera and San Diego Repertory. Michele has traveled
to over 115 countries performing on luxury cruise ships
with her husband, baritone Duane McDevitt and they
have released a CD release titled “Believe.”
In addition to her performance credits, Michele has an
extensive master class and workshop resume. She has
taught with the Joffrey Ballet Summer Musical Theatre
Intensive since it’s inception in 2015. Other notable
workshop credits include: Manhattan School of Music,
Bucknell University, Berklee School of Music, Mira Costa
High School, and Butler University. Michele is a proud
first-generation Austrian-American, a proud member
of Actor’s Equity Association, and a proud Mary Kay
Independent Beauty Consultant earning TWO free Mary
Kay cars!
Jerry R. Soria-Foust joins the Palm Springs Gay Men’s
Chorus as a professional music educator and arts leader,
with a career spanning more than 25 years. At the age
of 19, Jerry had his first GALA choruses experience,
performing in the inaugural season of the Indianapolis
Men’s Chorus. That experience was transformational,
and he credits participation in a number of GALA
organizations for the fulfilling life he leads as a teacher,
leader, artist, husband, dad and grandpa.
From 2005-2009, Jerry served as Artistic Director for
the San Diego Men’s Chorus, where he led the chorus
through a number of milestones, including performing
as main stage entertainment on an ocean liner for RSVP
cruises, singing the national anthem for the San Diego
Padres, and becoming the resident choral ensemble in
the newly renovated Balboa Theatre in downtown San
Diego.
PSGMC is a chorus of gay men, transgender, bisexual
and male identifying singers who through musical
excellence, community outreach, and civic responsibility,
are dedicated to entertaining, inspiring, and educating
the culturally diverse community in which we live.
Michele’s other credits include: My Fair Lady in Concert
Homosexuality was illegal in 49 states.
Enough was Enough and the Stonewall
rebellion achieved an awakening of the
erroneous actions of the society against
LGBTQ people. It was the beginning of
a coming out and showing PRIDE about
their humanity and sexuality.
Two of the artists who were emerging
from the repression of the 50s and 60s
were coming into their own identity of
their sexuality. Although they were not
directly from New York City they
came to this center of the bohemian
activity where freedom of expression,
artistically and sexually was welcomed.
with AIDS was is that appeared to be
Government intervention was slow and
emphasis was not urgent for finding
treatments or cures.
Keith Haring was a gay artist whose
talent was recognized when he was
attending high school inf Pennsylvania.
After graduating he enrolled in the
School of Visual Arts in New York City.
He dropped out of school and joined a
group of graffiti artists who were active
in the city. His work was colorful and
found a popular following. His used
art to illuminate the legitimacy of their
sexuality and react to misinformation.
During the beginning of the Regan
Administration in the early 1980s
the AIDS epidemic was emerging.
The Regan Administration failed to
refusing to acknowledge the science of
of a baby or barking dog. Haring’s work
responded to current political events
of the time. Apartheid, the hardships
of LGBTQ people, and activism on AIDS
comprised much of the content of his
work.
His large painting titled “Ignorance
equals Fear” and “Silence equals
Death” was a dramatic visual comment
acknowledging Act-Up the AIDS
activist group. His painting of Safe
Sex also promoted gay sexuality as
the AIDS epidemic. He was truly a multimedia
artist. Much of his art portrayed
rage probably emanating from abuse
in his early life and the hypocrisy of
society toward AIDS. His self-portrait with
flames gives some insight into his internal
rage. Although a retrospective show at
the Whitney Museum in New York titled
“The Rage and Tenderness of David
Wojjnarowicz’s Art” exhibited the many
facets of his art and personality.
a safe interaction. His art and his life
have become iconic and recognized
worldwide. He was an artist and an
activist who lived a short but productive
life.
David Wojnarowicz (pronounced voynah-ROH-vitch)
was a contemporary of
Keith Haring he grew up in New Jersey
and was subjected to an abusive Polish
father. As a teenager, he moved to
live in Manhattan with his mother and
attended the High School of Music and
Art. In the 1970s Wojnarowwicz became
a member of the avant-garde artistic
group. He did photography, made
films, created paintings, collages, and,
wrote several successful books primarily
on political and social issues related to
In their own way, each of these artists
Haring and Wojnarowicz were activists
for good in the world. Each had a
uniqueness in expressing their activism in
their art and each exemplifies the power
of art in PRIDE of their sexuality. Each
succumbed to Aids early in their life,
Haring at 31, Wojnarowicz at 37.
HOLIDAY SEASON PLANNER
Gifting a Puppy This Holiday Season?
Read These Tips First
(StatePoint) Thinking of surprising a friend
or family member with a puppy this holiday
season?
“Before gifting someone with a commitment
that lasts well beyond the holidays, make sure
you’ve made your list and checked it twice,”
says Claire Komorowski, chief executive officer
of PuppySpot, a USDA-licensed company
whose mission is to make lives better by
placing healthy puppies into happy homes.
Having introduced over 200,000 puppies to
loving homes, PuppySpot encourages potential
dog owners to make responsible decisions this
holiday season and are offering the following
Do’s and Don’ts to help:
Don’t:
1. Surprise your friend, partner or spouse unless
they’ve openly communicated that they’re
ready to take on the commitment and can
prepare for the puppy’s arrival.
2. Wait too long to start looking if you know
this is something you and your family want for
the holidays.
3. Try and cut costs. Healthy, well-bred puppies
can be expensive. If you see something that
seems too good to be true, it probably is.
4. Expect a puppy to arrive fully-trained and
well-behaved. Puppies can be mischievous and
require a lot of time and attention.
Do:
1. Leave plenty of time for the entire process,
you don’t want to rush selecting the right pup
for you.
2. Realize your puppy may not arrive at the
exact moment you had hoped for. These are
living, breathing animals that require stops
and care along their journey. They are not a
warehouse package.
3. Plan to be home for the holidays to acclimate
your puppy. Be sure to consider what happens
when the holiday excitement dies down.
Puppies need a great deal of attention,
especially during their first year.
4. Use reputable services, like PuppySpot,
which is authorized by the American Kennel
Club and has its own independent scientific
advisory board that collaborates with the USDA
to ensure all national standards are exceeded.
promise to connect the nation’s top breeders
to caring, responsible pet owners, visit www.
While there is perhaps no more joyful holiday
surprise than a puppy, this is one gift that
should never be given lightly. By weighing
the decision carefully, you can ensure that a
puppy’s new home is their fur-ever home!
