The time is now for public mental health 

care. Our current public health care system 

covers few mental health resources, and what 

is covered is often too little, too late. It doesn’t 

have to be this way. 

In this second part of a mental health panel 

series, the BC Health Coalition will bring 

together key leaders in the area of mental 

health to explore a vision for public mental 

health care. We will spotlight community 

based mental health programs that are paving 

the way for providing accessible and publicly 

funded mental health supports.

We just concluded our recent ‘Back to 

School’ fundraiser for Farms to Friends 

families, that made sure each child from 

the 74 households we deliver to each 

week were able to receive a bag of local, 

fresh food filled with everything from 

local eggs to leafy greens. When you 

sponsor a household from our Farms to 

Friends program, not only are you helping 

to feed neighbours and friends in 

your community in need of a little extra 

help, you are also quite literally investing 

in nourishing the minds of the next 

generation of leaders and thinkers.

and why it matters to her. 

“Farms to Friends is the program that 

feels closest to my heart. Growing up, I 

was raised by a single parent who supported 

three growing children by herself. 

Not only was it difficult to keep up 

with the amount of food we ate (especially 

my brother who grew five inches 

in just one summer), but there wasn’t a 

lot of time for my mom to get creative in 

the kitchen. We spent a lot of evenings 

reheating things like casseroles and spaghetti.

types of fresh, local foods rather than 

living off of cheap, convenient foods 

often lacking in substantial nutrients.” 

And that is exactly what makes this 

program so unique. It offers households 

the opportunity to experiment with different 

types of seasonal foods, perhaps 

for the first time. Each week, households 

receive an ingredient list and a 

new recipe they can try out (something 

my family would have loved growing 

up). Each bag even includes a fun, food 

centred game for the kids! 

Healthy food helps grow a healthy 

mind 

It is this attention to detail and care 

in each and every Farms to Friends bag 

that caught the attention of HelloFresh- 

Canada. Earlier this month, Farms to 

Friends became the very first recipient 

of the Fresh Food Explorers Program 

from HelloFresh, an incredible honour 

that came with a generous donation to 

the program! 

And while we 

are excited for the 

recognition from 

HelloFresh, this 

program wouldn’t 

be what it is without 

our cherished 

and hardworking 

volunteers or 

the generosity of 

donors like you, 

who have helped 

this program 

continue to run 

for over a year!

SD8 adds electric 

school buses to fleet 

Kootenay Lake has received confirmation 

that its grant application for the 

Go Electric School Bus Program has 

been approved. This means the district 

will be adding two electric school buses 

to its transportation fleet this year. One 

bus will service the Creston school 

community, and the other, Nelson. 

Electric school buses have many 

advantages, including the cost of electricity 

compared to fuel and fewer moving 

mechanical parts, which means 

they require fewer repairs and less 

maintenance. In addition, a zero-emission 

electric school bus saves about 17 

tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions 

annually compared to a diesel school 

bus. 

The new electric school buses also 

help to support the province’s Clean- 

BC’s plan, which has set a target to 

reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 

40% by the year 2030. 

The Go Electric School Bus Program 

is being administered by the Association 

of School Transportation Services of BC 

and is part of a joint Ministry initiative, 

the Ministry of Education and the Ministry 

of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon 

Innovation, to invest in clean energy 

solutions that help to reduce emissions 

and provide future cost savings. 

SD8’s ‘Go Green’ commitment 

includes supporting low carbon initiatives 

in all elements of its operations; 

from transportation, facility 

upgrades, to waste reduction and recycling 

programs. “All initiatives aim to 

reduce the District’s carbon footprint, 

increase efficiencies and reduce operating 

costs” says Michael McLellan, 

Secretary-Treasurer. 

Multiple grant applications combined 

successfully resulted in funding support 

of $245,000.00 for the two electric 

buses, as well as two charging stations. 

The SD8 Operations department is 

now working to design and install the 

charging stations at the Creston and 

Nelson operations yards to be ready for 

the buses much anticipated arrival in 

early winter.

Two art exhibits in the Langham 

Come on in to Kaslo’s Langham galleries where we currently 

have two excellent art exhibits reflecting two very different 

styles, media and content. 

In the Main Gallery we have an arresting and deeply affecting 

show from Tl’azt’en artist Damian John. Indian Agency 

uses the approachable medium of the comic book to explore 

the traumatic and difficult story of Indigenous peoples and 

the Indian Act. While this is a story of grief and pain, there is 

also growth, hope, and ultimately, resiliency. 

John says of the exhibit, “What if I reworked the images 

in comic book cover art to address some of the complicated, 

unusual, and deeply disturbing aspects of the Indian act and 

the treatment of indigenous people in Canada? If I mimicked 

the cover art closely, would it hold some power in explaining

John will be offering an artist talk on his compelling exhibit 

Saturday November 27th 4pm in the Langham theatre.

In the Lobby gallery we have a photo exhibit from Kaslo 

emerging artist Robert Banks Foster. Entitled Reality is 

Clumpy, the show encompasses 22 black and white photographs 

portraying trees over the winter of 2019/20, with the 

title of each piece forming a singular poem. 

Exhibits run through December 12. Gallery hours are

With over a dozen JUNO nominations between them, Elizabeth

workshop to explore strategies to address climate change 

using grounded conversations and the cutting-edge climate simulator 

En-ROADS. The resulting experience is hopeful, scientifically-grounded, 

action-oriented, and eye-opening. 

This workshop will feature a group climate solutions activity, 

followed by a guided discussion with workshop participants and 

facilitators. During the discussion we will explore the experience 

in-depth, discuss curricular ties, and provide the opportunity for 

participants to use the model themselves. Facilitators will also share 

our experience and resources for incorporating En-ROADS-facilitated 

learning into educational strategies at all levels. 

Laura currently focuses her efforts on climate advocacy and 

communication, and has a background in the sciences. She is a 

Regional Organizer for the Community Climate Hub initiative, 

founded and co-leads the Nelson-West Kootenay chapter of Citizens’ 

Climate Lobby, is a trained Climate Reality Leader and an 

En-ROADS climate ambassador. This work is driven by her grave 

concern for her daughters’ future, as well as all other living beings 

on this beautiful planet.

Try Qi Gong, Tai Chi 

Selkirk College is hosting a series of online classes in November 

and December. These classes will be a great way to get 

acquainted with the practices of Qi Gong and Tai Chi, and stay 

warm, fit, active and mobile as the seasons change and the temperature 

drops! 

These classes will be hosted once per week, with a 1 hour long 

class. The classes will be held on Saturdays at 3pm, beginning 

November 13, ending on Saturday, December 11. 

Expect a series with exercises which focus on introducing the 

core fundamental movements of the Tai Chi forms. With drills 

focusing on a slightly larger frame of movement, emphasizing 

balance and spatial awareness, as well as the promotion of core 

integration (flexibility/stability), spinal health, cardiovascular 

function and mental relaxation. 

No prior experience is necessary. So if you are interested 

in trying out Qi Gong for the first time and/or curious about

Garden Understories is building a Community 

Food Forest! A food forest is an edible 

perennial garden that mimics the layers and 

patterns found in nature. It has many layers:

trees and vines. This food forest will be full 

of berries, fruit, greens, herbs and more; all 

for the community to enjoy! A group of volunteers 

including high school and elementary 

school kids worked to create the beauty 

that is our Community Food Forest. Pop by

SEEDS Nelson is hosting their AGM on

It’s cold out there 

The Coldest Night of the Year is a 

covid-safe, family-friendly walk to raise 

money for charities serving people experiencing 

homelessness, hurt, and hunger. 

Walk with the Nelson CARES family 

of supporters virtually or in-person on 

February 26, 2022 – there’s a place for 

everyone! 

At Nelson CARES we reach out to 

support the most vulnerable people in 

the community. One of our goals is the 

preservation, maintenance and development 

of affordable housing in Nelson, 

British Columbia. The focus of the last 

three CNOY walks was the refurbishment 

of our downtown affordable housing 

building, Ward Street Place. This 

year the funding focus shifts to support 

individuals. 

Our Ready For Home program provides 

supports to homeless individuals 

ready for housing, individuals newly 

housed and those at risk of losing their 

housing. At the core of Ready For Home 

is a paid staff member who works oneon-one 

with individuals to find housing, 

to transition into affordable housing 

and to sustain them in their existing 

accommodation. 

At Nelson CARES respect for every 

individual is an ordinary everyday occurrence.

Action on old-growth 

Today I am writing with an update on historic 

new action to better care for BC’s old 

growth forests. 

First of all, I want to thank everyone that 

took the time to communicate with me, my 

team, and shared their thoughts on Old 

Growth. It helps to inform my work on your 

behalf, and your engagement is crucial to 

our democracy. 

I know many of you are celebrating the 

news of the deferrals however it is important 

to also recognize that some families are 

terrified about job loss. Our government is 

going to be working closely with communities, 

workers and companies impacted 

by the announcement to ensure people are 

supported. 

Over the summer, our government 

worked closely with independent experts on 

the Old Growth Technical Advisory Panel 

to identify the most at-risk old growth forests 

in the province. The areas proposed for 

these deferrals include all 900,000 hectares 

of the area identified by the expert panel as 

“Ancient” and “Remnant” forests. These are 

the oldest and rarest forests in the province. 

Our commitment to reconciliation is at 

the forefront of this process. The days of 

making unilateral decisions without First 

Nations rights and title holders are over. Our 

intention is to move forward on deferrals as 

quickly as we can while respecting our commitment 

to work with rights and title holders 

on important decisions like this. 

Let’s be clear: our work on old growth isn’t 

done. These deferrals align with recommendations 

of the Old Growth Strategic Review 

panel and give us time to engage with First 

Nations, communities, workers, and industry 

to build a plan to take care of all our 

forests. 

We’re implementing a long-term vision 

that protects old growth while ensuring 

workers and communities benefit from 

secure and innovative forest jobs for generations 

to come. We’re supporting workers 

and communities with a comprehensive 

package including employment opportunities, 

education and training options, or 

funds to bridge to retirement. 

Our forests make BC an incredible place 

to live. We owe it to our children and grandchildren 

to better care for our old growth 

forests. Thank you for your interest in protecting 

them.
