Michigan State
University
A brief history
In 1855, the Michigan State Legislature passed Act 130, which provided for the establishment of the “Agricultural
College of the State of Michigan,” which came to be known as the Michigan Agricultural College (MAC). MAC was
formally opened and dedicated on May 13, 1857, in what is now East Lansing. MAC was the first agricultural college in
the nation, and served as the prototype for the 72 land-grant institutions that were later established under the Federal
Land Grant Act of 1862, unofficially known as the “Morrill Act” after its chief sponsor, Senator Justin Morrill of Vermont.
