VALPARAISO ROTARY CLUB
Valparaiso
Club
By Doug Ross
he Valparaiso Rotary Club’s 100th anniversary
will be easy to remember because of the large
gates at the entrance to the Rotary Library
Garden across from Valparaiso
Public Library.
The club gave $110,000 to the project but
didn’t have to dig deep into its treasury for it.
Individual members came up with $95,000
of the project’s cost, according to 22-year
member Doug Mogck, who served as
project chair.
The project celebrates three major areas
of focus for the club – literacy, community
development and environment, he said.
Rotary International, founded in Chicago,
has been working for decades to eradicate
polio. It is now endemic only in Afghanistan
and Pakistan.
Mogck said when he went to a President-Elect
Training Seminar, “that was an amazing time.
It really opened my eyes to what Rotary does
worldwide.”
Deb Good heard about a trip to India to
vaccinate people against polio and was
inspired to take a team to India. “The nice
thing about the polio vaccine is you don’t stick,
you just put the drops in the mouth,” she said.
Sharon Kish remembers when an international
grant helped Rotarians from Turkey visit
Opportunity Enterprises, where they
were amazed at the services provided for
developmentally disabled individuals.
Gus Olympidis said as much as members
undertake individual projects and accomplish
great things for the community and the
world, none of those is the greatest Rotary
achievement. Put them all together, and in
aggregate you see the collective impact,
which is “creating a magical place.”
“You essentially see the architecture, the
mosaic of an exceptional community,”
Olympidis said. “This is a very unique
community in a very significant way.”
Other members recall their own local Rotary
memories.
“Rotary has always been a part of my life,”
Byron Smith said. His father was in Rotary,
so every Monday at dinner the Smith family
learned about what happened in Rotary that
day. “It turns out my grandfather was a charter
member of the Valparaiso Rotary Club,”
Smith said.
When Smith was asked to join in 1972, “it just
seemed like a natural thing to do.”
Mary Joe Jaime’s first service project wasn’t
that big. It was building a fence right here
in town for Hilltop House. The project was
initially to paint the fence, but when they >>
Membership opened to females
in 1988, a year after a landmark
U.S. Supreme Court ruling
convinced clubs to diversify.
— Byron Smith,
Rotary member
>> saw that the fence was falling apart, they
decided to take it down and build a new
one. “That volunteer experience had such a
personal impact, it helped me decide I would
be a Rotarian for life, she said.
“I have a lot of fun with the sergeant at
arms committee,” said Larry Raber, the
club’s longest-serving member, having
joined in December 1964. The sergeant at
arms levies frivolous fines to get $1 donations
from members for alleged offenses like an
ugly necktie.
Raber said his Rotary connections helped him
land a job at Northern Indiana Bank, where
he ended up managing the commercial loan
department. Raber’s office at the downtown
bank was in the front corner where an ATM
later stood. “The joke is I was replaced by an
ATM machine,” he said.
Jon Costas, a Rotarian before he was mayor,
had a vision for downtown Valparaiso that
has since turned the city’s downtown into
a vibrant area with a plethora of fine
dining restaurants and a central park that is
wildly popular.
“A leader multiplies more leaders,” club
President Debbie Wappel said.
Just as the city has changed, the Rotary Club
itself has changed over the years.
“When I came in, it was the top businessmen
in town,” Smith said, stressing the word
“men.” The club invited its first female
members in 1988, a year after a landmark
U.S. Supreme Court ruling convinced clubs to
diversify their membership rolls. Eight women
joined that year. By 1994, the club had its first
female president. Eight others have served as
president since then.
Members have been generous with both
financial donations and sweat equity in the
century since the club was formed.
Dr. Surjit Patheja is a 43-year Rotary member.
In 1978, he donated $25,000 to the Valparaiso
Rotary Foundation for healthcare scholarships
in honor of his 25 years in the
United States.
“That fund has grown to a value of about
$186,000,” Good said. “With that fund and
other Rotary foundation funds, there were 13
scholarships given last year, ranging between
$500 and $2,000.”
Since 1995, the club has donated almost
$300,000 to a variety of projects, including a
children’s room at the VNA Mary Bartz
parks, including a popular shelter at Forest Park.
Landscaping at the city’s original roundabout, at
Lincolnway, Sturdy Road and LaPorte Avenue, has
landscaping donated by the Rotary Club.
“There are so many projects, it’s all just
overwhelming,” Olympidis said.
Among the ones Good is most excited about is an
international affairs conference held at the district
level. A group of volunteers choose a timely topic
– recent ones have included water conservation,
human trafficking, solar energy and climate change
– and pick a keynote speaker. “We try to be really
timely on the world stage that these kids could
identify with,” she said.
“[ROTARY IS] A
GREAT BUNCH OF
—Larry Raber,
Rotary member
The students who participate break into groups,
with organizers separating them from classmates to
facilitate conversation, and then return for a plenary
session to report back on their discussions.
“THAT VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE
HAD SUCH A PERSONAL
IMPACT, IT HELPED
ME DECIDE
I WOULD BE
A ROTARIAN
FOR LIFE.”
—Mary Joe Jaime,
Rotary member
One student asked, “Why is what we’re doing today so different from what
we’re hearing on TV?” Good said. That’s the value of exposing students to
unbiased presentations and the facts.
Kish shared an eight-page list of projects funded through Rotary grants since
1993. Rotary contributed $282,122 toward projects worth a total of $916,700.
“Rotary is really local,” Kish said.
Among these projects are a shelter at Fairgrounds Park, a kindergarten room
at the Boys and Girls Club, volleyball equipment for the YMCA, an automated
external defibrillator for the Valparaiso University athletic department, the
Orville Redenbacher statue downtown, lockers for families’ belongings at
Family House, keyless locks for Housing Opportunities, a Creekside Park trail
bench, Chromebooks for after-school programs at the Boys and Girls Club
and a bridge at Meadowbrook for the Shirley Heinz Land Trust.
Looking to the future, Good said the club hopes to put Interact clubs in
every high school and middle school as well as Rotaract clubs on college
campuses. Students from area high schools and colleges are regularly
scheduled to attend Rotary meetings.
Wappel is focusing on leadership development for the Rotary Club. “We
are growing diverse leaders for community service and global impact to
keep the legacy of past leaders growing,” she said. She has developed a
lunch-and-learn leadership and personal development series for emerging
and aspiring leaders within businesses and organizations throughout the
community. Speakers on leadership topics are scheduled, and guests are
offered monthly opportunities to participate in roundtable sharing and
mentoring sessions with members. The program is educational and an
inspiration for long-term members, too. >>
VALPARAISO ROTARY CLUB
“THIS IS A
VERY UNIQUE
COMMUNITY
IN A VERY
SIGNIFICANT
WAY.”
“It’s just a great bunch of guys and gals
now,” Raber said. “There’s a lot of great
people in Valparaiso.”
Rotary Club members receive the Four
Way Test at meetings: “Is it truth? Is it fair
to all concerned? Will it build good will
and better friendships? Will it be beneficial
to all concerned?”
Worldwide, Rotary has more than
1 million members who ask those
questions each day.
— Gus Olympidis,
Rotary member
photo provided
>>
“We’ve got to think outside the box and reach
people,” Mogck said. “Millennials want to do
things, not just hear speakers. We’re seeing
clubs being formed with causes in mind, like
helping the environment,” he said.
Olympidis said the club’s future is intertwined
with the impactfulness of its membership. “You
need more members to collect the resources,” he
said. “Quality is measured by members’ impact, not just
by the number who show up at meetings.”
“ROTARY
IS REALLY
LOCAL.”
— Sharon Kish,
Rotary member
“We need to become attractive to
people who want to make an impact,” Smith added.
Prospective members should say why they want to join. What
does Rotary mean to them, he wants to know.
“The ultimate quest for volunteers is fulfillment,” Olympidis
said. The club’s leaders need to continually ask how they
deliver fulfillment for members.
“I think that’s another reason why Rotary needs to be more
flexible,” Kish said. During the pandemic, members have
sometimes met by Zoom because they didn’t want to lose
their connection to
each other.
“I feel safe in Rotary because there’s so many different
views,” Jaime said.
VALPARAISO NOON KIWANIS CLUB
VALPARAISO NOON
KIWANIS
CLUB
By Doug Ross
photo provided
“KIWANIS IS A GOOD FIT FOR ME.
BECAUSE OF THE LESSONS LEARNED
HERE, I’VE BEEN ABLE TO BETTER
MYSELF AND DO MORE FOR MY
COMMUNITY.”
— Ahna Campos, Kiwanis Club President
he Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club is
the largest in Indiana – seventh largest
in the world – and for good reason.
The club, celebrating its centennial this
year, remains extremely active in service
to youth.
Past-President Lenny Corso, a member
for 25 years, said he only knew a handful
of people at the club when Paul Knauff
recruited him in 1995. “I made friends
so fast,” he said. “You will meet some of
the most unselfish and compassionate
people in the world in the Kiwanis Club.”
The Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club
is known for its annual Pancake Day
breakfast, which has been around since at
least the early 1950s, Past-President
Steve Bobinski said. “It’s one of our larger
events every year” and raises around
$20,000 for charity. “It’s a great turnout.
It’s great community involvement.”
Bobinski said the comments he generally
hears falls into one of two categories.
Either they don’t know what service clubs
are and what the Kiwanis Club does, or
they say thanks for building a relative’s
wheelchair ramp or sponsoring a Key
Club at the high school.
Installing metal wheelchair ramps for
residents who need them is one of the
Kiwanis Club’s signature projects, but
there are plenty of other opportunities to
volunteer. “Everybody has a skill they can
share,” Corso said.
Kiwanians also help deliver food for
Meals on Wheels. Often, those clients
don’t have a lot of family and friends to
check on them frequently. “Sometimes
it’s not about the food, it’s the
socialization,” Bobinski said. “One
person bringing them a lunch is huge.”
Among the children’s issues the
Kiwanis clubs focus on is developing
an attitude of service leadership.
Affiliate clubs include the Key Club at
the high school level, Builders Club for
middle school students and Circle K
Club for college students.
The Aktion Club is for people at
Opportunity Enterprises, helping
build leadership skills among adults
with disabilities.
Scholarships are offered through the
Kiwanis Foundation, which is supported
by generous donors. “There are a lot of
giving people in this town,” Bobinski said.
The list of past donations and service
projects is lengthy. There’s a Kiwanis
baseball diamond at Glenrose South Park
and shelters at Rogers-Lakewood
Park. The Valparaiso YMCA got
a big contribution for its capital
campaign as well as athletic
equipment. The new Caring
Place campus and the new Boys
and Girls Club facility have also
received donations.
The Backpack for Snacks
program makes sure kids don’t
go without food. They’re given
to kids who receive free or
reduced-price school lunches.
Hilltop Neighborhood House has
benefited from food drives for
canned goods. Volunteers coach
Special Olympians, and the club donates
financially.
And that’s just for starters.
Club members can be young or formerly
young. “Empty-nesters can be wonderful
because they are now bored,” Bobinski
said. Newly retired members find they
now have time to donate their services.
Members still working often get their
employers to donate to the cause, too.
Club President Ahna Campos, one of the
younger members, said Kiwanis is a good
fit for her.
“I’ve been in volunteering organizations
since probably before high school,” she
said. “One of my biggest regrets is not
joining Key Club as a teenager.”
“Having a single-term presidency is really
beneficial for us,” she said, because it
forces others to step into leadership
positions and keeps the club vibrant.
Thank you
for your
service to our
community!
— Steve Bobinski,
Kiwanis Club
Past-President
The presidency is a four-year commitment.
The progression starts with becoming
vice president, then president-elect, then
president, then immediate past president.
Younger members like Campos have
been good for the Noon Kiwanis Club,
Corso said. “So many of the clubs are
contracting, not expanding. We are the
exception to the rule.”
The younger members have brought
the club into the electronic age, with
presentations by Zoom when necessary
and tickets on Eventbrite. “We love them,
we absolutely love them,” Corso said.
“Things were different years ago,”
Corso said. “Everyone wore a suit and
convention. Things were very formal.” >>
VALPARAISO NOON KIWANIS CLUB
>> Bobinski reached back into history
for tales of the friendly rivalry between
the Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis and
Valparaiso Rotary Club, both of them
founded in 1921.
On June 9, 1921, a baseball game
between the two clubs was staged to
benefit the Red Cross. In the month
before the game, the two clubs traded a
string of barbs in a local newspaper. The
Kiwanis team won the game, 12-6, and
then challenged the Rotarians to a game
of checkers, Bobinski said.
In 1978, the two clubs faced off in a
basketball game. The Rotarians brought
in a ringer – Joe Otis – but didn’t ask Otis
to join their club. At the end of the game,
the Kiwanians recruited Otis and,
through his leadership as a faculty
advisor at Valparaiso University,
chartered a new 31-member Circle
K Club on the VU campus.
Also in 1978, the Kiwanians, Rotarians
and Lions members initiated the first
Service Club Hog Roast to foster
fellowship, understanding and
friendly communication.
In 1989, the Rotary Club challenged the
Kiwanians to a goat milking contest at
the Porter County Fair. Kiwanian Lonnie
Steele arranged for two goats to be
brought into Milan’s for milking practice,
which helped the Kiwanians achieve
victory at the county fair competition,
Bobinski said.
In recent years, the Kiwanis and Rotary
clubs have collaborated in sponsoring
a veterans appreciation dinner, which
is now the largest in Porter and LaPorte
counties. Members pay the cost of dinner
for the veterans they invite.
A Salute the Recruits program is “a very
unique program that is starting to catch
on,” Corso said. The event honors high
school graduates going directly into the
military. The club gets the recruits’ names
from the military recruiters and hosts a
dinner for the recruits and their parents
in late May or early June. Sadly, the event
has been on hold for two years because
of the pandemic.
In Indiana, Kiwanis clubs raise money for
Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis
as one of their projects. There’s a Kiwanis
elevator, two neonatal ambulances and
a new helipad because of Kiwanians’
generosity statewide.
The Kiwanis Noon Club is always looking
for new members. Campos is hoping for
more diversity. “You tend to hang out
with people who are similar to you,” she
said, which makes diversifying the club
more difficult, she acknowledged.
The number of members, though, isn’t
as important as their engagement. “Our
engagement is around 80 percent,”
she said.
Campos and others enjoy the “Happy
Bucks” moments when members donate
a dollar for the privilege of sharing a joy
THE INTERNATIONAL ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS & SUNRISE KIWANIS >>
THE INTERNATIONAL ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS & SUNRISE KIWANIS
may not have as many members as the Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, but they
HAVE BIG IMPACT
Greg Simms is Noble Grand of The
International Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF),
which means he’s the group’s leader.
The odd name of the organization derives
from the members’ eagerness to do odd jobs
to help the less fortunate, including widows
and orphans, Simms explained.
The Valparaiso club was founded in
1848, just 11 years after the county was
organized. “We’re one of the oldest service
organizations in Porter County,” Simms said.
The club never went out of existence.
In the 1800s, the group’s mission included
burying people who couldn’t afford a grave.
“Over time, society picked up the slack,”
Simms noted.
Foster care has replaced orphanages.
Medicare and Medicaid are available to help
the elderly, low-income and some other
populations pay for health care. Township
trustees can help pay for burials, along with
some other poor relief. The Odd Fellows’
mission has shifted, but it hasn’t been erased.
Members still enjoy helping others.
Among the club’s major projects is bike
giveaways. “We buy some,” Simms said. “But
the vast majority are donated.”
The group collects donated bikes or ones
purchased at garage sales and refurbishes
them. “Every time we give a bike away, it’s
mechanically sound,” he said. The bike
might not look new, but it’s safe to ride.
The group has also sponsored suicide awareness
signs and ones that warn people to slow down
because of children playing or dogs being walked.
The group has donated to food banks, homeless
shelters, 4-H scholarships and to Dressed for
School, the clothing closet at VALE School,
located at the former Hayes-Leonard
Elementary School. “They took a couple of
classrooms and turned them into what looks
like a clothing store,” Simms said.
The Odd Fellows also donate toiletries to
school’s hygiene closets. That’s helpful when
a child needs help from the school nurse
because they lacked supplies that day
or might need some deodorant
because their body is
changing, among other
examples. “School nurses
call when supplies are
running low and they
get restocked within
days,” Simms said.
The group helped
refurbish the
“tween” room at
the Chesterton
Boys and Girls
Club, helped run
concessions at
Sunset Hill Farm
County Park
for a big band
performance
and donated
to the Rotary
Library Garden
in downtown
Valparaiso. >>
WE WANT
TO BE MORE
VISIBLE IN THE
COMMUNITY...
THERE’S
NOTHING
ODD
ABOUT
HELPING
PEOPLE.
— Greg Simms,
Noble Grand
ValpoChamber.org 15

THE INTERNATIONAL ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS & SUNRISE KIWANIS
>> “A lot of behind-the-scenes stuff” doesn’t earn the club accolades
but is part of the Odd Fellows mission, Simms explained.
At least twice a year, the group also cleans up litter along Sturdy
Road. They go out in the morning with gloves and bags, gather the
trash, then have breakfast or an early lunch afterward to enjoy each
other’s company.
“It’s networking, but it’s always doing what’s right,” Simms said.
“You’re with good people who want to make a difference.”
Simms was a member in the early 1990s. “They didn’t do much,” he said,
so he got frustrated and joined some other organizations but didn’t
find what he was looking for. Then he got a call from the Odd Fellows
secretary saying, “Hey, I found your name on one of the old scrolls.”
Simms went back, became more active, and moved up through the
ranks. “We’re one of the more active chapters now,” he said.
The Valparaiso chapter draws from as far as Wheatfield and nearby
towns in LaPorte County. He hopes to draw more members. “We want
to be more visible in the community, so people will say, ‘What’s an Odd
Fellow?’ and learn about us,” Simms said. “There’s nothing odd about
helping people.”
“You want to do some things? Come on down,” he urged.
The club meets twice a month, on the second and fourth Mondays,
to socialize and plan their next odd jobs on behalf of the community.
Despite the “fellows” part of the name, men and women alike are
welcome to join.
WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR
WHAT WE HAVE AND ARE
WILLING TO SHARE WITH
THOSE WHO DON’T.
— Mary Ann Claesgens, Charter member
The Sunrise Kiwanis Club is a spinoff of the
Valparaiso Noon Kiwanis Club. It caters to
early risers who want to start their Tuesday
with networking, a speaker and a chance to
share joys.
Mary Ann Claesgens is a charter member,
with perfect attendance since 1988, when
members of the Noon Kiwanis Club
showed them how to set up the club and
run meetings.
The club meets at 7 a.m. Tuesdays at the
Viking Chili Bowl. Many of the club’s 50
members are retired or current educators.
They wanted a breakfast club so they could
be on the school campus at lunchtime.
Brett Furuness, who becomes club
president on Oct. 1, works in Merrillville but
lives in Valparaiso, so he starts his Tuesdays
with Kiwanis before he heads to work.
“I wanted to be involved in the
community. I wanted to make a
difference in my community,” he
said. Kiwanians enjoy helping
others. “It’s fulfilling to know you
made a difference,” Furuness
said.
When he helped with the Porter
County Spelling Bee for elementary
school students, a principal told him,
“Boy, what a special evening this was.”
One of the winners was a child who
wasn’t normally in the limelight. “We
made a difference in that boy’s life,”
Furuness said.
Among the other activities this summer
was collecting pop tabs for Ronald
McDonald House.
It takes 1,400 to 1,700 pop tabs to make a
pound, and they get 40 cents a pound.
While not a big fundraiser, it’s an activity
that brings people together. Other Kiwanis
Clubs collected them, too. “It creates those
bonds across these clubs,” Furuness said.
Among the Sunrise Kiwanis Club’s other
projects was to install musical instruments
for kids to play with at Butterfly Pavilion,
part of Foundation Meadows. Kiwanian
Phil Hahn was eager to do so as a tribute
to his late wife, Laurel Hahn, who was a
percussionist as well as pianist for First
Christian Church. The club is raising money
to put in another instrument there.
GREAT LEADERSHIP.
COMMUNITY FOCUS.
Kiwanis also sponsors service leadership programs at
elementary schools, called K-Kids. Participation in the various
service projects is encouraged, but not required.
“You are as involved as you want to be,” Claesgens said. “You
can just pay your dues, eat breakfast, and leave.”
But most members join because they love volunteering,
especially to help kids. “We are grateful for what we have and
are willing to share with those who don’t,” she said.
Claesgens has fond memories of various projects the club has
done in the past third of a century.
First Tee is a golf outing that teaches kids more than how to
play golf. It also teaches lessons about how to live.
“Jim Martz loves to go with the kids when they ring the bells”
for the Salvation Army’s red kettles, she said. The club rings
bellows alongside the Thomas Jefferson Middle School
Builders Club.
We can’t thank you enough for your commitment to our community.
We truly appreciate your many years of service in Northwest Indiana.
“Kiwanis really is a youth-oriented service organization,”
Furuness said.
Claesgens worked in the family ice
cream parlor when she grew up. “We
learned service at a very young age,”
she said. “It becomes part of your life.
It’s something you look forward to.”
“It’s so easy to give when you live in the
The American Legion is a nonprofit
made up of state, U.S. territory, and
overseas departments, and these are in
turn made up of local posts, including Post 94 here
in Valparaiso. The organization was formed on
March 15, 1919, in Paris, France, by a thousand
officers and men of the American Expeditionary
Forces, and it was chartered on September 16, 1919, by
the United State Congress. In addition to lobbying on
behalf of interests of veterans and service members, it
has historically promoted Americanism, and individual
obligation to the community, state, and nation through
Mechanic Street (now Indiana Avenue), immediately next to
the county jail, in November, 1881, for $1,750. The board now
offered it to the Grand Army post for a site for the hall. An
association was organized
and a charter
obtained from
the state giving
it authority to
raise money and
build a hall. Of
this association,
E. M. Burns was
president; John W.
Elam, secretary,
and Aaron Parks,
treasurer. Several
thousand dollars
were subscribed
and the association employed an architect to make plans
for the building. When these plans were submitted to the
commissioners they decided in favor of a larger and more
pretentious building, and new plans were accordingly made in
conformity with their views on the subject. Upon the adoption
of the plans, the board of commissioners appropriated about
$2,000, which, added to the fund raised by the old soldiers,
was thought to be sufficient for the completion of the hall.
Some indebtedness was incurred, however, and in 1901 this
indebtedness was assumed by the
county, the commissioners issuing
bonds for its liquidation. The building
was then turned over to the county,
the Grand Army post reserving one
room on the ground floor for the use of
the Woman’s Relief Corps, a room on
the second floor for a post hall, and the
privilege of using the main hall once a
year for memorial services. By this means,
the old veterans of the great Civil War are
assured of a home for their meetings, and
