Staycationnounsteɪˈkeɪʃ(ə)n/INFORMALa holiday spent in one’s home country rather than abroad, or one spent at home and involvingday trips to local attractions.Why is a staycation not just a holiday?In recent years the phrase staycation has takenover, it originates from America and was createdduring the 2008 financial crisis, most Americanscouldn’t afford to leave the country so began toexplore their local areas, simply put a staycationis to holiday within the country you permanentlyreside. There has been an increase in stigmaaround the staycation, some communities lookdown on a staycation as if it were less than aforeign holiday, but many feel that this is not thecase.During the global Coronavirus pandemic of 2020staycations became increasing more popular.Something that was born out of economic crisisbecame the only option after most countriesclosed their boarders. Although taking a holidayin your home country may have been the lastchoice for some families, other families know nodifferent.In 2020 City Suites (2020) surveyed 2,000 adultsto see where and if they were going to travelthat year. 24.9% said they would prefer to stayin the UK until there was a vaccine. 24.7% saidthey would travel abroad as soon as they wereallowed. Whereas 17.76% said regardless of theCoronavirus pandemic they prefer to only holidayin the UK. A study by Campanile UK in 2018 alsoshowed that 93% of Brits would prefer to spendmore time exploring the UK rather than takingforeign holidays (Sims, 2018).There is evidence that Brits were falling back inlove with their own beaches’ pre-pandemic, sothe prices of staycations were already on therise. The pandemic left Brits with no option but toholiday at home which furthermore increased theprices of staycations. In 2021 the average familyholiday in Cornwall costs £5k for a week selfcatered,whereas the same holiday in Turkeywould cost £2.5k (Aspinall, 2021).These increasingly unaffordable prices maysoon mean families who would choose to holidayin the UK may choose to head abroad to savesome cash. This is a huge shame as not onlyare staycations great for local businesses theyare also much better for the planet, taking astaycation rather than a flight will reduce afamily’s carbon footprint massively in aid helpingslow down the rate of global warming.
