Marriage and Family LifeHow did we manage to live throughthe pandemic, meet 400 plus couplesonline for Marriage preparation andremain cheerful?Facing the reality of not meeting in venues forour Marriage Preparation courses throughoutthe Diocese, we contacted the diocesan ITteam in March 2020 and asked them whatthe possibilities were to deliver MarriagePreparation and Building a Better Marriage(BABM) marriage enrichment courses online.The patient and inspirational Aaron Dennis setup MS Teams for us so that we could at leasthave our initial team meeting.Despite all couples intending to get marriedin the Catholic Church having to attend aMarriage Preparation course, the opportunityis so much more to us as a team. This faithencounter is crucial to form the expectations ofwhat the future could hold for these individualdomestic churches. The very experience ofmeeting other couples who are going throughthe same process gives encouragement –nourishing all who come at wherever they maybe in their journey of faith to those who havelittle or no faith at all.Overcoming our own hesitancy to ‘perform’online – and we fully acknowledge the graceof the Holy Spirit – the MFL teams in eachof the 3 Pastoral Areas re-worked the kernelof our message for marriage and then ranour Marriage Preparation (which includedmarried couples as well as priest / deacon copresentersand newly recruited lay presenters)and BABM courses online.We missed not meeting the couples face toface but we have realised by experiencing theonline course that we can develop our futurecourses by running hybrid courses which willsave both the team and couples costs. In ourteam meetings we discussed strategies for postMarriage Preparation course evangelisationand were encouraged to attend the onlinecourses we would publicise to the couples.Of note in particular was the online Lenten2020 retreat at Walsingham led by Mgr JohnArmitage, the online SycamOre videos made byFr Stephen Wang, the online Alpha courseled by Stephen Walsh and the team at HolyInnocents, Orpington. We attended the onlineSycamOre course run by Deacon Neil Philipsonand the team at St Thomas of Canterbury,Sevenoaks. Viewing Bishop Barron’s varioustalks, resources from our own diocesanAgency for Evangelisation including talks fromArchbishop John Wilson and reading SherryWeddell’s ‘Forming Intentional Disciples’ and‘Walking with God’ –A journey through the Bible by Gray and Cavinswhich accompanied the online course presentedby Mauro Iannicelli, all inspired us to envisagean ongoing evangelisation experience forcouples. These resources fuelled our spirituallives so that in the short encounter with thosehoping to get married in the Catholic Church wewere able to rejoice and celebrate that the Lordhas worked marvels and holy is his name.Unlike Marriage Preparation we could not easilycontinue the care of the bereaved during lockdown other than give support where neededto those working in the parishes. At least onegroup used an online outreach whilst otherscontinued via the telephone to support thosebereaved within the parishes.At diocesan level we had the Archbishop’spermission to extend the Bereavement Ministryand are currently expanding the training team toreach out further into the Diocese. This is beingaccomplished by an online course plus a faceto-facemeeting as we ease out of lockdown.The ministry will be led by our new dynamiccouple Deacon Javier and Susan Elderfield.We look forward, with confidence, todeveloping our ministries further in 2021.14
