Magnesium castings in aGerman die casting foundry. Does the new MAXImolding process offer new perspectives and qualitative advantages
for the light metal alloys parts?
alloy injection molding inthe
digital foundry ofthe future
By inventing anew metal molding process, anew light metal injection molding machine
and anew self-learning foundry, Ashley Stone’s vision is to make this industry fit for the
“green” 21st century. Since 1999, Jacobsen Real-Time X-Ray Machinery of Canada has
been working to eliminate defects in castings and to do so Ashley Stone combined the
advantages of Thixomolding and hot and cold chamber high-pressure casting machines
into the MAXImolding machine and process.
By Ashley Stone, Toronto, Canada, and Edo Meyer, Siegsdorf, Germany
The MAXImolding machine is invented
from scratch and can produce
light alloy components with less
than 0.5 %ofporosity. The next step is
to implement afully automated, self-learning
light alloy forming cells in which
the MAXImolding machine works in tandem
with Automatic Image Recognition
(ADR) X-ray inspection. The real time
X-ray feedback via two independent
loops allows the process to be optimized
in real time cycle to cycle.
Casting has been carried out according
to the same principle for more than
5,000 years. The metal is heated in a
pot so that it becomes aliquid. It is
then metered into the mold with a
