Church Bells
By Harry Thornton
................................
The tradition of ringing out the old year and ringing in the new at
St Augustine’s Church was a special occasion at the 2007 New
Year as it was the 300th anniversary of the present six bells. Most
of what is known about the origin of the bells comes from an
account written in the Parish Constables’ Book by Benjamin Adie
who was Vestry Clerk at the time.
“The parishioners of Rugeley agreed with Mr. Abr. Rudhall Bell Founder
of Gloucester to take the 4 old Bells (which weighed 29cwt, 1 qr. 6lbs)
and to cast ym into 5 bells for ye sum of £32, also to make another Bell
to weigh 4cwt. for £26, to the whole 6 Bells he added mettle about
10cwt. The charge of casting and carrying to and from Gloucester was
paid by subscription (excepting about 50 shillings which was paid by ye
Churchwardens by Levy). The charge of hanging was paid by Levy. All 6
bells were hung and rung about New Year’s Day 1706.”
Tenor Bell being raised Oct 1999
The account also gives the weight of each bell, and the following
respective wording cast on them:
1) God send us peace A.R. 1707.
2) Prosperity to all benefactors A. R. 1706.
3) God save Queen Anne. A. R. 1706.
4) Peace and good neighbourhood. A. R. 1706.
5) Abr. Rudhall of Gloucester cast us all.
6) E. C. I. H. Churchwardens. Prosperity to Rugeley 1706.
As the treble bell of the six (the one that cost £26) bears the date
1707, and the others are dated 1706, it is assumed that they were first
rung at the 1706/7 New Year. It is noticeable that Queen Anne was on
the throne at the time. The bells were moved from the 14th century
tower of the old church (Old Chancel) to the present church when it
came into use in 1823.
In recent times, despite frequent maintenance, the condition of the
bells was increasingly causing concern and a successful bid for lottery
money from the Millennium Bell Fund, together with help from the
Environmental Fund and other generous donations, resulted in the raising
of the nearly £37,000 required to restore, retune, and refit the bells in
ball-bearings on a new steel frame.
Rules of the Belfry
Refurbished No 2 Bell Oct
1999
The 300th anniversary was marked by the ringing of a special peal
(5040 changes) on the bells and, St Augustine’s bells may be 300 years old,
but the oldest bell by far in Rugeley is the big bell at St Joseph’s RC
church. It was bought second-hand, reputedly for £80, for the church
which was built in 1851 and bears the words ‘Sancta Maria Ora Pro
Nobis’ (Holy Mary pray for us). It has been described as being cast in
1546, weighing 17cwt, and being from an unknown Gloucestershire
church. However, research in recent times by Bedfordshire archivist and
bell enthusiast Mr Chris Pickford leaves little doubt that the bell was cast
in about 1480 by bell-founders Hendleys of Gloucester, weighs 14cwt
13lb, is 42 inches diameter and before coming to Rugeley was in
Brockworth church on the outskirts of Gloucester. So, it was cast in
turbulent times some 226 years before St Augustine’s bells, when all
churches were Roman Catholic.
“We had such plans for later in life and sometimes they don’t come
to pay for private medical care.”
The entire collection was
overwhelmingly evocative of a
childhood idyll, although the couple
from Sutton Coldfield ‘have never
been blessed’ with little ones of
their own.
It started with the Beswick
Beatrix Potter feline figurine of
Ginger, bought 30 years ago as the
couple at that time had a ginger cat
named Sandy.
“We were avid collectors, visiting
fairs at Newark, Trentham Gardens
and Exeter – we’ve been to
Glasgow and back in a day to
collect items we’d seen,” they
recalled.
“Over time you start to look for
specific items to make up a suite or
you go somewhere for something
specific and find something else
which interests you and that sends
you off on another tangent.
Rare rabbits: The Oompah Band in green
jackets sold for £800.
Just some of the collection of
Bunnykins figurines.
Beautifully illustrated Royal Doulton
This Bunnykins plate can be filled
with warm water in order to keep the
child’s food at temperature.
“You just collect and collect. We’ve had a great deal of pleasure
collecting over the years and we’ve only ever bought what we’ve liked.
“We’ve seen the country and met lots of lovely people with an
interest in exquisite ceramics.
“It’s a passage of time we’ve thoroughly enjoyed – a wonderful
existence which has been cut short through illness.”
The nostalgic path chosen by the couple includes suites of
‘beautifully made’ nursery ware – a far cry from today’s utilitarian
approach.
“When you think of a toddler sitting there eating from these
beautifully illustrated pieces, it’s just absolutely incredible,” he said.
“You see kids today being fed with plastic beakers and things –
compare that to the sheer amount of design work and skill that went
into the nursery ware, decorated with pictures for the children to
look at while eating.
“We just fell in love with how beautiful it all was.
“Ginger was our first piece and it just grew from there.
“We had some wonderful times and absolutely loved all of it.”
Autumn Days at The Linhay
By Kristen Lackajis
...........................................
It was a fine autumn day (sunny, yet chilly), when we visited The Deer Park in Hoar Cross to
try the brand-new menu at The Linhay restaurant.
With a delightful country feel, thanks to the warm, inviting interior and gorgeous woodland-style tree
trunk tables, the expansive glass doors which line one side of the restaurant provide a stunning vista
over the rolling Staffordshire hills and forest, providing the opportunity for diners to enjoy the beauty
of the area without being out in the nippy autumn air!
For a lunchtime, the restaurant was bustling and the friendly waiting staff showed us to our seats and
presented us with a menu filled with deliciously warming offerings, such as Open Roast Packington Pork
Sandwich and Maple Glazed Bacon Loin. Needless to say we took some time deciding on our choices,
however we enjoyed a glass (or two!) of sparkling English wine while we deliberated.
I’m a big fish lover so I was delighted to find Aromatic Fish Soup on the menu. It sounded divine and
consisted of poached salmon, cold, mussels and prawns in an aromatic fish soup, parmesan puff pastry,
lobster butter and stout and cheddar sourdough. Not only was this dish hearty and warming (perfect
for a cold day) but I was incredibly impressed with the amount of fish I received, plus the size of the prawns! It was juicy, succulent, creamy and
incredibly indulgent, plus the melt-in-the-mouth lobster butter was a stroke of genius! Sheer bliss!
My friend, who is vegetarian, was spoiled for choice as there were several veggie options, all of which sounded wonderful. She finally opted for a
Roast Parsnip Tart Tatin, topped with Dovedale blue cheese, champ mash potato, parsnip crisps, parsnip and sherry vinegar puree and a port syrup.
She was certainly not disappointed! The sweet parsnip was perfectly set off by the tangy cheese flavour and she declared the entire meal ‘incredible’!
Not only was the food tasty and filling, but the presentation is something to be admired as well. It is clear that at The Linhay, a lot of love and
thought have gone into each and every dish to create not only something to tantalise the tastebuds, but also a work of art on your plate!
All ingredients are fresh and local, with lots of the meat and accompaniments being sold in the adjoining farm shop meaning you can take a little
taste of heaven home with you!
Cooking and Food-Styling
Photography Course
.................................
Fancy something a bit different? Then read on! We sent our director, Helen, on a cooking and
photography course at Perrys’ Field to Fork - an Artisan Butchery and Cookery School that deliver
cookery courses, based in the historic market town of Eccleshall.
On arrival we were greeted by Debbie Hill who owns the cookery school, and the setting was a lovely a
purpose built Artisan Butchery & Cookery School, built in 2019 which is surrounded by beautiful gardens. We
were made to feel welcome straight away and, after a quick brew we all introduced ourselves.
Running the course was professional baker Steph Clubb and she guided each of us through her recipes. First
off, we prepped our dough for our iced buns and let it rest whilst we moved onto making lemon, coconut and
blueberry loaf cake.
Then back onto the dough to make our finger rolls. I quite enjoyed the kneading process – I found it got rid
of a lot of tension and was rather relaxing! They then went into the oven and the fun bit began - decorating the
cake with icing! I did manage to get some on the cake as well as all over the counter! My inner child came out
as I added pretty edible flowers, berries and mint from the garden, and I finished just in time to take my buns
out of the oven – I only managed to burn a couple of them too!
Steph had boxes and boxes of stuff to help us style our food for our photographs and she shared her tips and
tricks on how to get the perfect shot every time - you don’t even need a top-of-the-range camera, just your
smartphone!
We learned how to bring out the colour of food to create a beautiful and vibrant image, and discovered how
to use natural ambient lighting and props with hints of what was in the food to help enhance our dishes.
Everyone’s final images were absolutely fantastic. We all had a great day and learned so much - plus the cakes
tasted pretty good too! I made that many I brought them home and shared them with my family “who were
pretty stunned that I managed to bake anything at all, given my track record - they are all alive still by the way!”
Our lunch was also included in the price and consisted of Perrys’ own homemade items, all of which were
extremely tasty.
The courses are run over a full day, from 10am till 4pm. It was relaxed, fun and very informative and I will
definitely be booking another one soon!
As well as cake baking, Perrys’ run a variety of courses, bread making, Indian cooking, Italian cooking, butchery,
and pie-making etc, with new courses being added all the time. Keep a look out on the website at
www.perrysfieldtofork.co.uk.
It makes the perfect gift for a loved one, a corporate team-building event, special occasion or just to treat
yourself and learn some new skills! They also offer gift vouchers for all special occasions.
Fresh, Local, Delicious!
By Kristen Lackajis
.........................
There’s nothing quite as British as a Sunday roast dinner and
whether you’re a staunch weekly roast-eater, or the
‘occasional’ roaster, you can’t deny that nothing quite hits the
spot like meat and veg with all the trimmings! Therefore, we were
delighted to be asked to sample one of the area’s best-known spots
to enjoy a bite to eat whilst surrounded by stunning countryside –
Bradshaw Brothers Farm & Café.
With its warm, inviting feeling, the café is situated adjacent to the
butchers and deli shop and features traditional farmhouse-style wooden
tables and chairs, with large windows letting in reams of sunlight – one of
which was ours – beautiful on a warm late-summer day!
Friendly staff are on hand to take your order, and also advise on the
food, and we eagerly took a look at the menu to see what was on offer
– we weren’t disappointed! As well as a selection of roasts, there were
several starters and, well, it would be rude not to, wouldn’t it?! Therefore,
we ordered Fresh King Prawn Cocktail, and Farmhouse Pate to get our
appetites going!
The king prawns, which came served with brown bread and butter,
were succulent and sweet, enveloped in a rich marie rose sauce, whilst
the farmhouse pate was smooth and creamy, delicious spread on melba
toast with butter and homemade chutney. Needless to say, we made light
work of these!
Next came the thing we’d been waiting for – our roast dinners! We’d
chosen beef and turkey, with one of our diners had gone a little ‘off-piste’
and ordering the hand battered fresh haddock with chips!
The roasts arrived with their trimmings - the beef accompanied with a
homemade Yorkshire pudding, and the turkey with pigs in blankets and
stuffing. Served with seasonal veg (in this case, carrots and green beans),
cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, new potatoes and smothered in a rich
gravy! The turkey was melt-in-the-mouth, moist and plentiful, whilst the
beef was simply falling apart if was so tender! And as for the haddock?
Fresh, light and with the most gorgeously golden chips we’d ever seen!
Whilst everything was divine, the real winner is knowing that all of this
was fresh and local, something which really does stand out as you can
certainly taste the difference. Another incredible plus was the price – for
a fantastic, large portion of fresh and local produce, we found we were
paying far less than at a larger establishment, for something so much
better!
If you’re familiar with Bradshaws, you’ll know what I mean… and if
you’re not? Well, what are you waiting for? This is one place that should
definitely be on your wish list!
Bradshaw’s Sunday Lunch Menu runs from 12pm-2.30pm each Sunday
and booking is advised as, trust us, it’s very popular! Find out more at
To INFINITII and Beyond!
......................................
The INFINITII restaurant in Abbots Bromley offers an experience in Indian fine dining that is simply not
to be missed. Michele Phillips went along to find out first-hand what it was all about, and boy, was she
in for a treat!
You can tell from the moment you step inside INFINITII that it is an Indian restaurant with a difference. The
interior is tastefully decorated, giving a sophisticated and elegant vibe, mixing contemporary with traditional for a
stunning visual look.
After been greeted by friendly and enthusiastic team member, we were shown to our table where we set about
perusing the extensive menu. After ordering our drinks (only sparkling water although we were extremely tempted
by the well-stocked gin bar!), myself and my partner settled on trying the tasting menu, consisting of six courses, and
eagerly awaited with mouths watering.
The first course was an amuse bouche of pastry filled with chickpeas, onions, yoghurt and pomegranate chat
masala, served with a spicy yet fresh tamarind juice. It was the perfect thing to whet our appetites and leave us hungry
for more.
Next came our starters of Aloo Brie Tikki, which boasted a spiced mashed potato cake filled with delicious creamy
brie cheese and cashew nuts. Whilst this had some spice to it, it was not overpowering, and the undertone of cashew
nut was delicate yet tasty. The second starter, Achari Paneer Tikka, again a cheese dish, was Indian cheese marinated
in yoghurt and accompanied by peppers, beetroot and carrots, giving a ‘pickled’ flavour that had some heat to it too.
Then came the third course… Called INFINITII Trio, this was made up of three delicious meats – char-grilled
chicken, lamb tikka and king prawn. The chicken was juicy and succulent and, combined with the delicately spiced
lamb and the tender prawns with cumin and yoghurt, it was a taste sensation with all three working so well together.
A palate cleanser of hand finished strawberry sorbet from the local Needwood Dairy Farm (and a slice of lime
for an extra kick!) came next and it was a delightfully refreshing interlude which worked well to cool the tastebuds
in preparation for the piece de resistance which, I have to admit, I’d been looking forward to all night!
And there is was, in all its glory – Gunpowder Lamb! French stream baby lamb chops in a smoked tomato curry
atop a spiced rustic potato. This blew my mind – it came served in a smoking dome which was lifted to reveal the
dish underneath it. Worth it purely for the showmanship, but the taste was something else! It was spicy, warm and
the lamb was so tender that it literally melted in the mouth!
My partner’s main was the Malabar Seabass, which came in a tasty coconut milk tempered sauce with curry leaves
and mustard seeds. The taste was so delicate and the dish was beautifully presented too. Safe to say, we devoured
these dishes along with the accompanying saffron rice and naan breads!
The sixth, and final, course were our desserts, although I must say I was more than comfortably full at this point…
but surely I could fit in a sweet? I’m glad I did, because it was the perfect way to end a fantastic meal. Both being
made in-house by the skilled INFINITII team, we enjoyed a Raspberry Gulab Jamun Cheesecake which proffered a
light and sooth filling, on top of a crunchy biscuit based, and filled with juicy dumplings inside! What a treat! There
was also a Crème Brulee which was creamy and luxurious and gave way to a hint of lavender as an aftertaste.
What can I say? Everything from
the customer service to the food
was simply incredible at INFINITII.
It’s the ideal place to enjoy a special
occasion, a romantic meal with a
loved one, or just a catch-up night
out with friends – I can guarantee
you won’t be disappointed!
1tbsp of lemon juice to milk or if making a vegan option
use soya milk - it curdles better)
1 tbsp milk/soya milk, to glaze
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas 6 and prepare
a baking tray with a light dusting of flour.
2. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt and cayenne
pepper/mustard powder into a mixing bowl. Stir in most of
the onions and cheese, keeping a little back for the top of
the loaf. I like to keep back about 25g of each.
3. Add enough buttermilk to bring the dough together into
a clean ball. Add a little extra milk if needed, especially if
you have used wholemeal flour.
4. Shape into a round (approx 18cm) and place on the
prepared tray. Mark the loaf into quarters, cutting almost
all the way through the dough. Brush with a little milk, then
scatter the remaining onions and cheese on top.
5. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the loaf is crisp and sounds
hollow. Cool for at least 30 minutes on a wire rack before
eating.
Best eaten on the day of baking however leftovers can be
frozen or reheated the next day.
Keeping it Traditional
.........................
Stepping inside the Coach and Horses in Abbots Bromley is like
stepping back in time. With its original oak beams, open fires
and traditional furnishings, you could be mistaken for thinking
you were in a seventeenth century coaching inn in its hey-day.
The landlady, Rose, was very welcoming and showed us to our table,
which was already laid and ready for our visit. The atmosphere was
relaxing and the low-level lighting, mixed with the gentle hubbub of other
diners chatting whilst quiet music played, made for a very comforting and
cosy vibe.
The menu is relatively traditional, good old-fashioned pub grub, as one
would expect from a village inn, and featured classics such as cod in
homemade beer batter, scampi and chips, Hunters chicken, and several
tantalising steaks and accompaniments from the grill.
We decided to treat ourselves and have a starter, so I opted for Cheesy
Mushrooms. This consisted of pan-fried mushrooms enveloped with a
cream, garlic and cheddar cheese sauce, and served with crusty bread. It
felt very decadent, with the thick sauce coating the mushrooms
beautifully and cheese providing a delicious gooey-ness, along with a
lovely rich taste.
My partner chose the King Prawns with Chorizo served in a garlic and
fresh chilli oil and, once again, served with freshly baked bread to mop up
all that delightfully flavoursome oil. The prawns were succulent and juicy,
with a little heat being added from the chilli combined with the spice of
the sausage – perfect!
The starters weren’t small by any means and we both enjoyed goodsized
portions which were more than enough to whet our appetites for
the main course.
Being a pie-lover, I had (finally!) settled on the Steak and Ale Pie, which
I was assured was homemade by a local butcher especially for the pub
itself. It was full (and I mean full!) of steak, coated in a rich gravy which
had wonderful depth of flavour. Served with ‘proper’ mashed potato and
lots of fresh seasonal veg, including cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, savoy
cabbage and beans, and extra gravy to boot, it was an absolute triumph of
a dish!
My partner had chosen the Chicken with Bacon and Stilton Sauce,
served with chunky chips and a side salad, and was similarly impressed.
The bacon was, once again courtesy of the local butcher and was thickly
sliced with a beautiful smoky taste. The moist chicken breast, also a
butcher’s finest, was so tender it cut like butter and literally melted in the
mouth, and the stilton sauce bound it all together with its salty, earthy
tones. The chips were double cooked so crispy on the outside and fluffy
inside, and the ‘side’ salad was anything but! So large and delicious, it could
have been a meal in its own right!
Needless to say, after this feast, we simply had not got room for a
dessert, more’s the pity as the menu boasted hearty-sounding classics,
reminiscent of school days, such as Treacle Sponge and Custard and Apple
Pie.
All-in-all, we enjoyed a fantastic meal, with a friendly and traditional
atmosphere, at The Coach and Horses – Abbots Bromley’s hidden gem!
The pub is now taking bookings for Christmas. You can
Award-winning Local Cider Company
“Every apple tree is precious and every apple has a tale to tell…”
............................................................
That’s the mantra which
James Williams,
founder of Yoxall Cider
Company, has been living by
for the last three years since
opening his own business
and taking his passion for
cider one step further.
James had been making cider
for 10 years prior to starting
James and James of Yoxall Cider
up on his own, initially
beginning as a keen amateur. His goal with Yoxall Cider was to
create a smooth, rich, truly apple tasting, handmade, artisan cider
using local apples, honouring the tried and tested traditional
techniques, but using modern methodology and equipment to
produce an exceptional product.
“Cider making is a mixture of arboriculture, creativity, hard
work, patience, and a huge dose of fun,” James laughs. “You can’t
make great cider without having fun and being constantly in awe
of the magic and science involved in the process.”
James’ philosophy is simple – he believes that every apple tree
is special and has a story behind it. With so many beautiful, healthy
and delicious local apples going to waste, the team behind Yoxall
them as possible.
“Our orchard is everyone else’s back garden,” he continues.
“We also source the best traditional Dabinett cider apples from a
specialist grower in Herefordshire to ensure the perfect balance
is achieved.”
It takes almost 12 months to produce Yoxall Cider’s delicious
batches, meaning that there’s an awful lot of hard work and
dedication that goes into each and every bottle. This hard work
The Anglesey Hotel and Grounds, 1908 Hedgeford Lodge 2021 Eskrett Street, off Market Street
Racing Stables & Sir
Robert Peel
By Jono Oates
............................
In the centre of Hednesford on Market Crescent stands
Hedgeford Lodge, now a popular and busy pub, but it was once
home to the horse racing stables for a member of the landed
gentry and was surrounded by green fields and countryside when
Hednesford was a small Staffordshire village.
The building was built in 1831 for Edmund Peel, who was the third son
of Sir Robert Peel of Tamworth, 1st Baronet, a British politician and
businessman, and brother of Sir Robert Peel, 2nd Baronet, who was
twice Prime Minster of Britain. When his father died, he left Edmund
£75,000 in his will, having already given him an advance of £60,000,
making Edmund one of the richest men in Staffordshire.
Edmund’s home was at Bonehill House in Tamworth and he had the
Lodge built in Hednesford to house his racing horses and would often
ride the horses up on the Hednesford Hills. Originally called Hedgeford
Lodge, it later became Hednesford Lodge. The area was a very popular
location for horse racing stables and by 1850 there were at least six
stables in and around Hednesford. At that time Hednesford was a very
small village, before the introduction of the coal mining operations, and
the Lodge was surrounded by fields and pastures.
After Edmund Peel passed away in 1850 the Lodge was put up for sale
by auction along with the racing stables, cottages, farmhouse and farm. It
was purchased by the Marquess of Anglesey from Beaudesert and it
became the Hednesford Commercial Hotel, later renamed as the
Anglesey Arms Hotel, whose landlord was Thomas Eskrett. Thomas was
a race horse trainer as well as landlord and ran the hotel with his wife
Margaret.
In January 1869 the Eskrett family met with tragedy when their 19-
year-old daughter, Eliza, was found drowned in the lake that was situated
about 500 metres from the hotel, clearly the result of either a tragic
accident or suicide.
The hotel was the location for many meetings of organisations, clubs
and societies and it was home to meetings of the Hednesford Football
Club before they moved to the Cross Keys inn. Club members enjoyed
the annual club supper in December 1889 and the club secretary, Mr AF
Freeman, announced that they had played 10 games in the Birmingham
and District league, winning four of them, and had only received one
heavy defeat against Kidderminster Harriers - but that was because
Hednesford did not have a goalkeeper between the posts on that day!
Thomas Eskrett died in 1873 but his widow Margaret continued to
run the hotel until she passed away in 1907 and Eskrett Street, off
Market Street, is named after them.
In July 1912 the hotel was involved in a betting crime when Mr Poyner
Ball was arrested after a police constable saw him exiting and re-entering
the hotel and passing slips of paper, betting slips, and envelopes to
various men on Anglesey Street. When arrested Ball told the policeman
that he knew nothing about any betting slips and he was completely
innocent, however when he was searched the constable found a betting
slip tucked away in the bottom of his right boot. When asked why he had
the paper in his boot, Ball replied “to keep my foot dry.” He was fined
£10 and ordered to pay 6 shillings in costs.
A crime of a different kind was revealed on Christmas Eve 1951 when
landlord Samuel Bridgart was visited by an undercover alcohol sampling
officer from the County Council who bought two double-whiskies for
10 shillings at the bar. After disclosing his identity, the two men went to
the lounge, only for the officer to discover that the glasses were now
completely empty. Tests on the whisky bottle taken from the bar later
showed that they contained over 23% of ‘extraneous water.’ Bridgart
said that he had spilled all of the whisky over the floor after ‘accidentally
colliding with the Christmas tree in the corridor.’ He was fined £20 and
with costs of 1 shilling.
During the 1970s and 80s the Anglesey hosted rock bands and discos,
in 1978 the progressive rock band Edge appeared on stage, with an
admission charge of 50p, and in October 1980 there was a free Country
and Western Disco every Thursday night and a Livewire Disco every
Saturday night till midnight, with an entrance fee of 50p.
The hotel eventually closed and was taken over by a properties
company but in 2015 it opened as a JD Wetherspoons pub and they gave
the former hotel its original name when it was the racing stables of a
19th century country gentleman – the Hedgeford Lodge.
Harry Potter’s Harry
Potter Book Sells for
Thousands at Auction
............................
Arare copy of Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone –
owned by a man named Harry Potter - has sold for tens of
thousands of pounds at auction.
Harry Potter, 33, from Waterlooville, Hampshire, so named years
before Pottermania exploded in 1997, discovered he and sister Katie
Sign owned a Potter hardback first edition.
It was given to them by their late father, David James Potter, in
1997 because he was so amazed by the name coincidence. After
much deliberation, Harry and Katie decided to sell the book in a bid
to honour their dad. Despite being in poor condition, it sold to a
private UK buyer for a hammer price of £22,000 at Hansons
Auctioneers on October 14. With buyer’s premium the total paid
was £27,500.
Harry Potter, who attended the sale at Hansons’ headquarters at
Etwall, near Derby, said: “We plan to use the proceeds to take my
dad’s ashes to Kenya.”
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said: “We’re
delighted to deliver a happy ending in this new Potter story.
Considering its well-used condition, the book did extremely well. I’m
so pleased Harry and Katie can now use the proceeds to honour
their father.
Harry, a 33-year-old national sales manager, was eight when the
first Potter book came out in 1997. Thanks to Pottermania, he’s
spent the last 25 years trying to convince people his name really is
“People just don’t believe me,” said Harry, a dad-of-three. “When I
A Window on the Past
Food, Glorious Food
When looking at old postcards of Rugeley you realise how
much shops have changed in the past 100 years or so;
perhaps none more so than food shops. Every aspect
has changed, the window displays, the baskets of uncovered food
outside exposed to dust and pollution, the interiors, the change to
mainly self-service stores, the range of goods stocked - even in the
1960s yoghurt was an exotic newcomer!
1. An early 20th century photo of Manton's shop in Market
Street, approximately opposite the car park. They were fish, game and
poultry dealers, but also ran a Posting Establishment (which later
became a taxi service) and supplied ‘Funeral Equipages’. Note the food
displayed outside the shop. At Christmas, poultry and game would be
displayed hung from the iron bar that runs across the shop front.
4. John Morecroft behind his fruit and veg stall in the old Market Hall
(part of the Town Hall range of buildings) in the 1970s. He had a prime
5. Safeways, Rugeley's first purpose built super-market opened in the
The Landor (local history) Society is a focus for those who wish to
was founded in 1953 and was named in honour of Walter Noble
2. Whitworths in Market Square, in the premises now occupied by
Must restaurant. Originally Whitworths occupied the right-hand half of
the block, then later extended to the four windows shown. This
postcard was issued about 1915. George Mason's took over the
business when Mr Whitworth retired and it continued as a grocery until
Virtual Tours of the
Trent Valley
By Louise Morris
............................
Over the last couple of years, the country has seen various
stages of lockdowns and public health advice leaving many
people rightly worried about their safety. With concerns
about pre-existing health conditions, or reduced access to public
transport, may people have faced isolation and poor access to
nature.
In response to this, Transforming the Trent Valley has been working
with a group of skilled volunteers to capture stunning images of the
Trent Valley and bring nature to people at home.
Our Virtual Tours volunteer, Paul Morris, has created two interactive
tours that allow you to explore some of the beauty spots of this river
valley. The first is around the lakes of Tucklesholme Nature Reserve
near Walton-on-Trent. Panoramic views allow you to look around as
you move from point to point on the circular walk and hotspots along
the way take you to picture galleries, interactive features and further
information.
A second tour takes you around a circular walk in Branston Leas near
Burton, where you can enjoy some of the stunning wildlife as you take
a virtual stroll. More virtual tours are in the planning and can be found
on our website www.thetrentvalley.org.uk/trent_walks.php.
We have also created video walks of different sites along the river
where you can sit back and be taken on a short tour whilst enjoying
relaxing music. These can all be found on our YouTube channel by
searching for ‘Transforming the Trent Valley YouTube’.
Some stunning images of the Trent Valley have been captured showing
the wildlife, heritage and scenery. These can be viewed in a photo
gallery on our website www.thetrentvalley.org.uk/gallery.php. We would
like to thank all our photography volunteers for helping us to capture
these inspiring images.
So, as the evenings draw in and the weather becomes chilly, why not
grab a warm drink and spend an evening exploring the Trent Valley from
the comfort of your armchair.
SI Cannock & District
M
embers of Soroptimists International Cannock &
District went to the gym for their latest wellbeing
event, arranged in collaboration with Inspiring Healthy
Lifestyles (IHL), a charity which, on behalf of Cannock
Chase Council offers a wide range of activities to the
community to improve their health and wellbeing.
Adults are advised to do 150 minutes of moderate activity
or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week spread evenly
over 4 -5 days but it has been shown that exercising for just
two days a week can reduce the risk of heart disease or
stroke.
The group was given a tour of the wellbeing gym at Chase
Leisure Centre and were instructed on how to use all of the
machines and had great fun trying them all. Everyone agreed
that exercising is so much more enjoyable in a group and at
least one member has renewed her gym membership as a
result of the session!
Rugeley in Bloom
By Jane Pallister
................................
Rugeley in Bloom consulted with the
public and traders in the town and
identified seven different flower beds
which were privately owned, along with a
busy alleyway, all of which were unkempt,
with the alley suffering from regular
vandalism and littering. All were adopted
and are now tended.
Recently, the group entered the Royal
Horticultural Society ‘It’s Your
Neighbourhood’ event and achieved the
level of ‘thriving’ which is the second-to topslot
and a great achievement for the group in
its first ‘elongated’ year due to the pandemic.
The RHS judges deemed Rugeley ready to enter the major-scale award
of Britain in Bloom which is our aim for 2022.
During lockdown volunteers were growing from seed many of the
plants that now are in the donated hanging
baskets and planters, all of which were
donated to town centre businesses. We
have had anecdotal evidence that his had a
positive impact on the mental health and
wellbeing of growers and business owners
and has reduced vandalism.
Rugeley primary schools were invited to
create the logo and local businesses have
become watering-can stations volunteers
can fill up at. Committee members have a
gardening kit to lend out, and a local
businesswomen allowed the use of her
commercial-scale greenhouse to bring on and store plants.
The seven sites in the town all reflect the adjoining businesses, with
historic plants by 14th Century properties, edibles to reflect local food
businesses, wellbeing displays by seating areas, plants used for dyes and
inks by Benhill Press, and three mini beds by a pub and takeaways are
called Pizza, Pints and Poppadoms – each holding Italian and Indian herbs,
chillis, tomatoes and rosemary, mint and fennel which are hangover cures!
Volunteers can be seen most weekends and Rugeley in Bloom now
operates a glut courier service, collecting surplus fruit and veg for
Rugeley Food Bank and takes a stall on the artisan market appealing for
fruit, veg, seeds and plants. Currently, we are clearing the beds, planters
and hanging baskets for winter and have big plans for 2022.
My Month in
Parliament
By Amanda Milling MP
.....................
In recent weeks, we
have tragically lost
both Sir David Amess
MP, who was stabbed
to death while carrying
out a constituency
surgery, and James
Brokenshire MP who
sadly lost his battle
with lung cancer.
Parliament will be a
lesser place without Sir
David and James. But we will never forget the
work they did and the legacies they have left
behind.
I know not everyone will agree with my
politics, or even have voted for me. But
disagreement in a democracy is to be expressed
at the ballot box – and not through verbal or
physical violence. I love that I am accessible to
the people of Cannock Chase and feel it is one
of the most important parts of our democracy.
While a lot has changed in Parliament, I
continue to work hard as your local MP. This
includes attending events, visiting businesses,
meeting constituents, and trying to make
Cannock Chase a better place for us all.
I was immensely proud to present Brereton
Million with the first ever Compassionate
Communities UK Charter Award. The
community group received well deserved
recognition for the amazing work they did to
support Brereton and Ravenhill during the
pandemic. This award reflects the best of our
society, and what can be achieved when we work
together to support each other.
In celebration of our amazing high street
businesses, I have once again launched my annual
‘Best of Cannock Chase’ competition which
aims to find your favourite independent retailers
across Cannock.
There are lots of different categories,
including best local independent shop, best
café/restaurant, and best market stall in Rugeley,
and the various categories are always hotly
The ladies were treated to a fascinating talk in October given by
Georgian Jono of Jono’s Tourism, on the History of Rugeley.
Jono quoted a lot of information on Rugeley from a book published in 1892
Rugeley was mentioned in the Doomsday book and how in the 12th century
Rugeley was a growing village. In the time of Henry 8th, men from Rugeley
were recruited to go to war for their country.
Jono’s talk included the building of the canal in the 18th Century by James Brindley, how in the
19th Century Rugeley was on the up and up as around 300 travelling hat makers came to work in
the area, and the opening of the Trent Valley Railway in 1847.
