The Breckenridge
The spirit of TSTC’s West Texas communities is best captured
through community support and involvement. Business and
industry donations lead to future employment opportunities for
graduates of Texas State Technical College.
“The donations received by The Foundation are critical to the
programs and students in West Texas as they help increase
student success, which in turn supports our communities
and industry partners,” said Delton McGuire, senior field
development officer of The TSTC Foundation.
One of the best examples of the community working together
is the aid that TSTC Welding Technology students received in
Breckenridge from the Breckenridge Economic Development
Corp. (BEDC) and Breckenridge Industrial Development Corp.
Longtime supporters of the dual enrollment program, these
organizations launched a fundraising campaign that helped
high school students begin taking first-semester classes in
the summer.
BEDC Chief Executive Officer Colton Buckley said having a local
TSTC campus is important to the community’s expansion. That
was one of the reasons the BEDC board of directors approved
the financial gift to help the dual enrollment students.
“TSTC in Breckenridge and its programs are vitally important
for job training and career enhancement for the workforce in
Breckenridge and the Stephens County area,” he said.
Buckley is also pleased that the TSTC welding program plays an
important role in filling jobs in the area.
“The welding program has great leadership and is a premier
example of constructing a pipeline of talent from our school
district and local citizens to skill development and acquiring
certifications through our local TSTC campus, and then to
obtaining a steady career with one of the industrial employers in
our community,” he said.
The TSTC Foundation also received funds to help Aviation
Maintenance Technology students in Abilene. Dude Ezell,
widow of the late Nelson Ezell, donated $5,000 for a memorial
scholarship in her husband’s honor.
Nelson Ezell was known for his passion to restore World War II
aircraft in Breckenridge, and he wanted to pass his passion on to
others. McGuire said Dude Ezell wanted to continue his legacy
by offering a scholarship to TSTC students with one criterion:
that the students write an essay detailing why they care about
historic aviation.
Brookshire Grocery Co. also provided scholarships for students
in Sweetwater and Brownwood. The Focus on the Future
scholarships reward students in the company’s market areas for
their dedication, hard work and academic achievement.
