Program Objectives: The UWF Theatre Department is an undergraduate only program
focused on giving students the tools to succeed in the profession or on to a graduate program.
History: The University of West Florida was established in 1963. Theatre has been a vibrant
member of the University since its beginnings. Over the past 15 years the department has been
steadily building the curriculum and the quality of the degrees offered. The department now
offers a BFA in Music Theatre, Acting, and Design and Technology. Along with the BFA
programs the department offers a BA in performance Studies and Arts Administration degree.
Facilities, Classrooms, and Theatres: The Theatre Department is housed in the Center for
Fine and Performing Arts. The Theatre Department has two spaces, a 450 Proscenium Theatre
and a Flexible Black Box Theatre. The theatres are supported by a full scene shop and
costume shop, and each space has state-of-the-art lighting and rigging systems. The
Department also uses the dance facilities in the recreation building and the recital hall here in
the Center for Fine and Performing Arts.
Scholarships and/or Assistantships: The department offers a variety of scholarships and
tuition waivers for performance students entering the program. The Design/Technology students
have the opportunity to apply for a Bessel Scholarship, an endowment established specifically
for them.
