History: We are active in professional organizations around the U.S. within our respective fields, but teaching is our first priority. Experienced faculty members teach all courses instead of graduate students, and enrollment in performance classes typically ranges from 8-20 pupils. We work hard to prepare students to directly enter the profession if desired, as well as pursue a variety of career options. The full and part-time theatre faculty bring a wide range of professional theatre experience to the classroom, having worked extensively in NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Seattle and elsewhere on regiona productions; as well as in TV and film. Facilities, Classrooms, and Theatres: Theatre Department is thrilled to now be housed in the university’s new (opened in summer 2020), state-of-the-art facility the Center for the Arts. This 36,750-square-foot building features two performance venues, an art gallery, a digital fabrication lab, design labs with animation software, multiple classrooms, Theatre faculty offices, vocal performance rehearsal rooms, a voice studio, a large dance studio, state-of-the-art production shops, a sculpture garden, an outdoor commons area and adjacent ground-level parking. Our new scene shop is now equipped with state-of-the-art metal working tools. The new Digital Fabrication Lab comes with 3 different types of 3D printers. Our new costume shop has been equipped with industry-grade special equipment. History: The University of South Florida School of Theatre & Dance facilitates the growth of creative and academic artists and scholars. Theatre students can pursue Bachelor of Arts degrees with concentrations in theatre performance, theatre design, and theatre arts. Dance students can earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance with a concentration in ballet or modern dance, or a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Studies. The school also offers minors and undergraduate certificate programs that are open to non-majors and non-degree-seeking students. TheatreUSF began with the founding of the university in 1956, and the DanceUSF program opened in 1969. In 2002 the two performance-driven educational bodies combined to create the School of Theatre & Dance. Working closely with our nationally and internationally recognized faculty, you will build mentoring relationships that provide the support and guidance to strengthen your skills and confidence. Facilities, Classrooms, and Theatres: Theatre 1 is a multi-use theatre, seating 550 guest continental style, a proscenium theatre with a fully rigged fly house and two orchestra pits. Theatre 2 is a mainstage black box theatre with seating ranging between 150 and 300. USF's Dance Center is a three-story facility housing three 40'x50' studios, observation rooms, reference library, and dressing rooms. Each studio is equipped with floating wood floors covered with cushioned Tarkett, overhead observation rooms, built-in sound, mirrors and walnut barres. The Theatre Arts Rehearsal building is home to a scene shop, a costume shop, several rehearsal classrooms, including two blackbox theatres and the Theatre Department faculty offices.TAR 120 is a black box theatre used exclusively by the Theatre Department. TAR 130 is a black box rehearsal room for mainstage performances, as well as a performance classroom. Scholarships and/or Assistantships: Student Assistantships are available in the Costume, Scenic, and Electrics Shops, along with the Theatre Office. A variety of merit and need based Scholarships are distributed annually to new and returning students. 61
