Program Objectives: Fostering creative expression and telling stories that resonate.<br />
History: The University of South Florida School of Theatre & Dance facilitates the growth of<br />
creative and academic artists and scholars. Theatre students can pursue Bachelor of Arts<br />
degrees with concentrations in theatre performance, theatre design, and theatre arts. Dance<br />
students can earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance with a concentration in ballet or modern<br />
dance, or a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Studies. The school also offers minors and undergraduate<br />
certificate programs that are open to non-majors and non-degree-seeking students. TheatreUSF<br />
began with the founding of the university in 1956, and the DanceUSF program opened in 1969.<br />
In 2002 the two performance-driven educational bodies combined to create the School of<br />
Theatre & Dance. Working closely with our nationally and internationally recognized faculty, you<br />
will build mentoring relationships that provide the support and guidance to strengthen your skills<br />
and confidence.<br />
Facilities, Classrooms, and Theatres: Theatre 1 is a multi-use theatre, seating 550 guest<br />
continental style, a proscenium theatre with a fully rigged fly house and two orchestra pits.<br />
Theatre 2 is a mainstage black box theatre with seating ranging between 150 and 300. USF's<br />
Dance Center is a three-story facility housing three 40'x50' studios, observation rooms,<br />
reference library, and dressing rooms. Each studio is equipped with floating wood floors covered<br />
with cushioned Tarkett, overhead observation rooms, built-in sound, mirrors and walnut barres.<br />
The Theatre Arts Rehearsal building is home to a scene shop, a costume shop, several<br />
rehearsal classrooms, including two blackbox theatres and the Theatre Department faculty<br />
offices.TAR 120 is a black box theatre used exclusively by the Theatre Department. TAR 130 is<br />
a black box rehearsal room for mainstage performances, as well as a performance classroom.<br />
Scholarships and/or Assistantships: Student Assistantships are available in the Costume,<br />
Scenic, and Electrics Shops, along with the Theatre Office. A variety of merit and need based<br />
Scholarships are distributed annually to new and returning students.<br />
