A ROMAN LANDSCAPE

A shady spot right by the
shore. The water ripples
gently, mirroring the sky and
vineyards.
“The river valley is planted
with the green grapes of
Bacchus to the highest point
of the sweeping hillside.”
Perhaps Ausonius sat right
here as he wrote these
words some 1,700 years ago,
boats sailing by, loaded full
with wine barrels and amphorae.
The Romans pressed
grapes directly at the foot
of the vineyards, loaded the
must onto boats and transported
this to the large wine
cellars of the Imperial
Residence in Trier. Roman
wine presses still exist today
in places such as Piesport,
Brauneberg and Erden. Wine
is probably the most vibrant
cultural legacy left to us by
the Romans. They laid the
foundation for a distinctive
culture of enjoyment and
made a lasting impression
on the landscape. But it‘s
the confident and successful
young winegrowers who
have made Mosel wine what
it is today: a premium quality
pleasure, internationally
sought-after and praised by
wine critics. And so, impressive
ancient architecture meets
contemporary wine culture
to create an oasis of pleasure
for appreciative wine lovers
with an affinity for culture.

MOSEL. A MYTH.
People have been cultivating wine along the Mosel for the past
2,000 years. That has shaped the landscape and gives it its distinctive
character. Almost a legend…
‘Mythos Mosel’ is the name of an event,
organised by the young wine growers
association ‘Moseljünger’, which takes
place every year over the first weekend after
Whitsun. A Riesling Journey of the top class.

We have made this ‘journey’ several times.
The event, organised by the young wine
growers in the region, takes place every
year over the first weekend after Whitsun.
The very special atmosphere of the
Mythos Mosel event has already captivated
us at our very first visit. A host winery
invites three winemakers from other parts
of the wine growing regions of the upper
and lower reaches of the Mosel (Terrassenmosel)
and the Saar to showcase their
wines. We tasted a wide variety and were
able to discern the specific style of the
Mosel wines. It is an exciting ‘journey’,
because it is quite remarkable how the
different wines reflect the location,
terroir and style of their origin. That’s
why we are definitely coming back to
the Mosel.

SAAR WINES ARE JUST POETRY
The Saar is often referred to as the Mosel’s
cool sister – and so are its wines. They are
particularly fine, always very precise with a
mineral taste and also delicious fruity notes.
Even after decades, their freshness still
surprises. Mature Saar wines are just poetry,
and sought after worldwide.
The Othegraven winery bears the name of my
grandmother. We exclusively grow VDP Grosse
Lagen and give our wines all the time they
need to mature, which means that all our
Riesling wines ferment spontaneously.
The SaarRieslingSommer event allows visitors
to enjoy both wines and other products from
the Saar area. This event is one of the highlights
for our winery and takes place on the
last weekend in August. We are always happy
to welcome some of the thousands of enthusiastic
guests who share their passion for the
Saar area and its great wines with
us.

Bland tasting rooms are a thing
of the past – instead, modern
winegrowers are focusing on a
feel-good atmosphere in fresh
architecture. Some boast an
elegant feel, while others are
eye-catching and courageous.
In Wiltingen, for example,
you can find an absolute work
of art with a pond, a natural
stone cellar and a majestic
tower; a real talking point.
Large vineyards extend in
front of the winery’s panoramic
windows. The spectacular
production centre of the Van
Volxem Winery is one of many
fascinating wine buildings
that can be visited along the
Moselle, Saar and Ruwer
rivers. Another example is the
Longen-Schlöder wine estate
in Longuich, where celebrity
architect Matteo Thun succeeded
in creating elegant guest
houses. Increasing numbers of
winegrowers are hiring talented
master builders to serve their
magical Rieslings in suitable
surroundings. After all, tasting
is what we want, and with the
successful combination of
wine and architectural culture,
the enjoyment on your palate

Tip: Pay attention
to the biodiversity
‘highlights’!
Red Mosel Vineyard Peaches
The harbinger of spring ... A sea of red vineyard
peach flowers turns the vineyards along the Mosel
into delicate pink. It can be seen mostly between
Cochem and Koblenz. The locals use the red fruits to
make aromatic jam, or add it as a final touch to their
dishes. Vineyard Peach liqueur is a local speciality.
It is a perfect accompaniment to any Mosel dish,
either on its own or added to local sparkling wine
to make ‘Kir Moselle’.
Living Mosel vineyards
Walk through the Mosel vineyards and discover
some unusual flora and fauna. Lizards and
Moselapollo butterflies in particular have
made themselves at home in this unique landscape.
The Living Mosel vineyards initiative
promotes, looks after and shows off this
biodiversity.

The Culture & Wine Ambassadors lead
tours for individuals or groups based on
themes such as nature, culture, Living
Mosel vineyards, wine, foraging for the
kitchen, and behind the scenes at
wineries. Each have their own special
focus but may also include other areas of
interest, myths, legends and insider tips.
Boat trips on the
Saar and Mosel
The sun glittering on the water,
green vineyards and clouds
casting their shadows across
the water’s surface: A fascinating
play of light with a great
view of villages and vineyards.
That’s what a boat trip on the
Mosel and Saar has to offer.
Grape harvest and young
wine (Federweißer)
At the end of September, winemakers of the Mosel,
Saar and Ruwer start harvesting the grapes. Most
of it is still carried out by hand – especially on the
steep slopes. This challenging work is rewarded
with high quality wines. Harvesting takes place in
multiple stages, and the winemaker decides already
at this point which grapes are used for each of the
different quality labels, i.e. Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese
or Eiswein Prädikatswein. Mosel locals like to taste the young wine about half-way
through the process from grape juice to mature wine. Accompanied by a slice of onion tart,
this Federweißer wine belongs to autumn just as much as the grape harvest.

Wine festivals
Amidst the historic setting of the wine-growing
villages, locals and their guests alike enjoy regional

A program of wine tasting, music and traditional
processions add to the enjoyment. Many places
select a local girl as their wine queen, which is
always a special occasion. Almost all towns and
villages in the region celebrates their own wine
