THE HEAD COACH
PP
FRANKIE HAS BELIEF
IN PLAYERS
Preston North End head coach Frankie McAvoy reflects on the weekend and
looks ahead to tonight’s Carabao Cup fourth round tie with Liverpool.
Good evening and welcome to Deepdale for
this fourth round Carabao Cup match against
Liverpool. I would like to welcome Jürgen and
the staff, players and fans of the Reds here tonight, for
what should be a great opportunity to test ourselves
against the very best around at present.
It will be a chance for us to try and react to the
disappointment of the weekend, which should provide
us with more than enough motivation to put in a
performance that we are capable of.
I knew what the weekend meant and that was the
disappointing thing. We didn’t think in first half that
we did well enough. In the second half we thought the
reaction we got was a lot better, but it is no use doing
it when we’re 1-0 down, we need to do it from the
beginning.
We need to start getting our finger out, because at the
end of the day, we’ve only won three out of 14 league
games, it’s not good enough. We need to do better and
it starts from now, that’s what we need do, we know
exactly where we are now.
I was bitterly disappointed after the game, I knew what
it meant, I knew what it meant to the people of Preston
and the fans that come, that’s the bit where I was
really so hurt for them, because Blackpool have been
given the bragging rights and that will be a sore one
for some time and the only way we can make it right,
is by picking up results in our upcoming games.
I believe that the group that we have got are a good
group, I don’t think there’s any question about that,
and I believe that they’re good enough to win games
going forward and we must give everything to ensure
that is the case.
Tonight, we have somewhat of a free hit. Nobody will
expect us to beat Liverpool, whatever team they put
I BELIEVE THAT
THEY’RE GOOD ENOUGH
TO WIN GAMES GOING
FORWARD AND WE
MUST GIVE EVERYTHING
TO ENSURE THAT IS THE
CASE.
out, but everyone wants to test themselves against
the best players, coaches and teams and they are
certainly be considered that at the present time, so we
must perform at the very best of our ability and hope
for some luck as well.
There will be a full house at Deepdale tonight and
after the last Saturday home game, which was a very
emotional occasion and last Saturday, we are getting
used to performing in front of big crowds and we must
put on a show for everyone in attendance.
Thank you for your continued support; please get
behind the team from the first minute to the last and
we will ensure that we give everything we have got to
reward you with a performance to be proud of.
Enjoy the game,
Frankie
PLAYER INTERVIEW
PP
RAFF’S A RED AT HEART
PNE defender Joe Rafferty crossed enemy lines in his childhood, opting to support
the red half of Merseyside, when his father and brothers were all Blues.
That didn’t cause anywhere near as much friction
as you might imagine, though, mainly as his
family were just so proud that he was playing
for a club the size of Liverpool.
Joe played for the Reds from U9s all the way through
to the U18s, and followed them as a fan during that time
and ever since, so tonight’s fixture perhaps means
more than usual.
Speaking to The One And Only, he said: “I’ve always
been a Liverpool fan. My dad and my two older
brothers were Everton fans, so I don’t know how I
even turned out to be a Liverpool fan to be honest! I
think it was maybe my mum, but I always have been.
“I just got scouted when I was younger. I think I was
going in for trials at Liverpool, but at the same time
Everton came in as well, but I knew I wanted to go
to Liverpool.
“It was alright though to be fair, my dad and my
two older brothers aren’t too bad. My dad says he
supports Everton, but he’s not a mad blue or anything,
and my oldest brother’s the same.
“But my other one is a bitter blue! They weren’t too
bothered though, I’d signed for Liverpool so they were
made up for me really.”
During his time there, he played alongside the likes of
Wolves captain Conor Coady, and Raheem Sterling was
also then around in the latter stages of Raff’s time at
Anfield, albeit in a lower age group.
The now 28-year-old loved his time in their youth
setup and stayed all the way up until that all-important
moment when the club decided whether or not they
would keep him on and award a professional contract.
Raff said: “It was good to be fair, but you’re just a kid
so you don’t really know any different.
“It was just normal at the time. I used to just go in after
school on the bus and when you get a bit older you
start thinking hopefully I can make it to the first team,
but obviously it’s a bit hard when they’re that good.
“You do your scholarship and once you’re doing your
scholarship you kind of just think about ‘am I going to
get a pro here or aren’t I?’.
“After a while it was looking like I wasn’t going to get
one. We got beat in the Youth Cup in the first round
against Swansea and then it was looking likely that the
majority of us were going to get released.
“My dad went in and they said we might offer you a
pro, but they were umming and ahing so I felt like
I needed to leave. Once I decided to leave obviously
Rochdale came in and I went there.”
Joe went on to spend many years with Dale, becoming
an integral part of their side, before joining North End
in 2019.
This season has arguably been the most frustrating
yet for Joe, still to feature in the league this term, but
he has now been named in the 25-man Championship
squad, and he’s hoping to feature tonight in the
Carabao Cup, as he has in the previous three rounds.
I KIND OF FEEL LIKE
I’VE EARNED THE RIGHT
TO PLAY IN IT.
He said: “I think everyone will want to play. From my
own personal point of view I’m dying to play because I
scored in the last round and I’ve played all the games
in the cup.
“I kind of feel like I’ve earned the right to play in it, so
I’m really hoping Frankie does play me.
“It’s hard because you come in every day and work
as hard as anyone and when the original squad got
announced I was quite down about it.
“But I kept working hard and then once it got
announced that I was added, it was kind of like a
weight was lifted and it’s given me something to
fight for.
“I didn’t really have that before other than the
cup games, so I’m just fighting for a place in the
league now.”
THE ONE AND ONLY
Sean Maguire
Sean Can’t
Help Falling In
Love With PNE
While admitting he’s fallen in love with Preston North End since joining the
club, Sean Maguire still has a soft spot for his boyhood team Liverpool.
As a young lad in Ireland, it’s usually a case
of following a local side, as well as one of the
big boys in England, which in Seani’s case
ended up being the Reds from Merseyside.
So when the Carabao Cup fourth draw was made and it
was revealed North End would host Jürgen Klopp’s men,
it was unsurprisingly a fixture he could not wait for.
Speaking to The One And Only, Seani said: “When I was
a young kid growing up in Ireland, there was probably
a few teams that everyone supports, like Liverpool,
Manchester United, I suppose Leeds are actually one.
“But I think Liverpool are the most well supported team
in Ireland. A lot of my friends and family are Liverpool
fans, but I was a massive fan.
“But obviously when I started playing the game
professionally, you don’t necessarily fall out of love with
supporting, but there’s obviously bigger things going on.
“Especially when you play for a team like PNE for so long,
you end up falling in love and supporting them, but if
there’s a team in another league that I’d support it would
definitely be Liverpool. It’s one I cannot wait for.”
Tonight’s game follows the weekend’s derby against
Blackpool – which hadn’t been played at the time
Seani spoke to us – so with two fixtures of the kind
within the space of four days, it’s been a big week for
the club.
Games like these are ones which are built up to more
than any other fixture, not just because of the sort of
atmosphere they bring, but because you can become
an instant hero among supporters with a special
performance.
Seani added: “Matches like this don’t come around that
often. I think [Tom] Clarkey’s poster is still everywhere
around Deepdale and the training ground from when he
scored a winner against Blackpool in the cup, so if you
do well in a game like this, end up scoring the winner or
something, you can go down in North End history.
“It’ll be a great occasion and one that everyone’s really
looking forward to. When the draw was made a few
weeks ago everyone was buzzing. A packed Deepdale
under the lights, live on Sky, it has all the makings to be a
really good cup tie. I don’t think there’s a better stage to
be involved in.”
10

THE BIG INTERVIEW
11

THE ONE AND ONLY
North End have had to navigate their way through three
rounds of the competition to get this point, while their
opponents entered the cup in the third round, beating
Norwich City in September.
Jürgen Klopp used that evening as an opportunity to
alter personnel in his side compared to their Premier
League line-ups, with the likes of Alex Oxlade-
Chamberlain and Curtis Jones featuring.
“I remember looking at the game they played against
Norwich in the round before, it was still a really strong
team, even though a lot of their big boys maybe weren’t
playing,” said Seani.
“Obviously Liverpool’s manager wants to win every
competition that he’s involved in and especially being only
around the corner as well, not much travelling, they’ll
have a lot of players wanting to play.
“Maybe those who haven’t been playing as much in the
league will get a go, but I think any player who plays for
Liverpool is going to be as good as the ones who play
week in, week out in the Premier League.”
Without doubt this is a game that everybody in the North
End squad will want to feature in, but just a few weeks
ago, the Irish forward would have thought his chances of
being fit were very slim.
North End’s No.24 pulled up holding his hamstring
away against Queens Park Rangers just prior to the
international break, and there were worries about the
extent of the injury, especially given his history with that
particular muscle.
As it turned out, though, things weren’t quite as bad as
they first appeared, and he was able to make his return
to action at the weekend.
“I think the way I did it against QPR was similar to the
way I did my very first hamstring injury where I tore it
really badly,” Seani explained.
“I’ve kind of learned to fear the worst and anything
under that is a bonus. I think the international break
came at a good time because I had a couple of weeks to
kind of recover and strengthen the parts that needed it.
“When I got the news that it wasn’t as bad as first feared
obviously I was extremely happy.
“I didn’t actually pull or tear anything, it was just kind of
precautionary to give myself a couple of weeks to make
sure I’m right. All I can do now is look forward to all
these games.”
One of the matches which he sat out on the sidelines was
last week’s Championship encounter against Coventry
City, a special night not just because of the 2-1 victory,
but because history was made.
Club captain Alan Browne became just the 27th man
to reach 300 appearances for Preston North End, an
achievement made all the more impressive given his
age of 26.
IT’S ONE I
CANNOT WAIT
FOR.
THE BIG INTERVIEW
With their Irish backgrounds and both having played for
Cork, Browney and Seani soon became close friends
once together at PNE, and the latter was proud to see his
skipper reach the impressive milestone.
“He’s a legend isn’t he? That’s some achievement to
become only the 27th man to do that.
“To do that at any club, especially nowadays, you have to
be a special player and the club needs to have a special
place in their heart.
“Browney as a person, as a player, he’s a proper role
model in the way he just goes about his life, his career
and the way he plays.
“Everyone looks up to him and that’s why he’s captain.
When things aren’t going right on the pitch, you know
you can look at Browney and I just want to replicate what
he does.
“What he’s done at Preston is absolutely unbelievable; it
doesn’t happen that often.
“He’s a special player, a special character and since I’ve
been here he’s been one of my best mates.
“To see him grow over the last four or five years from
being captain when Tom Clarke wasn’t playing to now
being club captain is fantastic, and he’s only going to
grow and be a better player and be the captain for the
next however many years.”
Back to tonight’s action, though, and Seani is hoping he
and his team-mates can upset the odds and make the
quarter-final of the Carabao Cup, which would be the
EVERYONE LOOKS
UP TO HIM AND
THAT’S WHY HE’S
CAPTAIN.
furthest any PNE side has ever progressed in the history
of the competition.
He said: “Anything can happen. It’s a home game, 11
players against 11 players and I think if we’re on our
A-game, set up right and everyone’s on the same
wavelength, I’m sure we can cause them all sorts of
problems to progress to the next round.
“It will be nice to know as well just where we’re at in
terms of playing against such a good Premier League
side, who are of course doing well in the Champions
League too.
“Even just a good showing of ourselves can be a real
confidence booster. The great thing about football,
especially in the Championship, is if you don’t do well in
one game, there’s always another one just around the
corner and it’s a really big week for us.
“Playing Blackpool for the first time in the league in over
ten years, and then you’re playing one of the top sides
in Europe. If you do well in those games, you don’t know
what it could do for our confidence levels.”
Manager Jürgen Klopp will be aiming
to add the Carabao Cup to his list of
accolades with the Reds, but will have
to overcome North End under the
lights of Deepdale first.
His side have got off to a flying start
so far this Premier League season,
thrashing the likes of Norwich, Leeds,
Crystal Palace and Watford by three or
more goals.
Not to mention that they are currently
unbeaten in their 2021/22 campaign,
with the colossal centre back Virgil Van
Dijk having returned from an ACL injury
he suffered last season.
This clash will be the perfect
opportunity for Liverpool to bounce
back from their disappointing cup run
last year, as they exited in the fourth
round after a 5-4 penalty defeat to
Arsenal.
Already dispatching of Norwich City by
3-0 in the third round, the Lilywhites
will face one of their toughest tests
in many years, defending against
whichever quality options Klopp opts
for this evening, whether it be the
Premier League big-hitters like Mo
Salah, or alternative options such as
Takumi Minamino.
It’ll be the first time the sides have
faced each other competitively since
January 2009 and only the sixth time
since 1962, thus highlighting the novelty
of such an encounter.
Elite level players such as Andy
Robertson, Jordan Henderson and
Diogo Jota were all on Klopp’s bench
in the third round, so it would be
no surprise if they were given the
green light to either start or make an
appearance tonight as well.
With both sets of fans no doubt raring
to go, the Reds versus the Lilywhites
could well be a game for the history
books.

Ibrahima Konaté
KELLEHER
62
The French centre half is a recent addition to Klopp’s
stacked squad, having joined the Reds ahead of the
2021/22 season. His move came after spending four
seasons with Bundesliga’s RB Leipzig, a club which he
played 95 times for in both domestic and European
competition. One of his best achievements was helping
the side to a third-placed finish in the Bundesliga, being
part of the division’s best defence. At only 22, he is a
German Cup runner-up and highly experienced in the
Champions League too. Despite past muscle problems
which left Konaté sidelined for a large period, he is fit and
in contention for all competitions with Liverpool. He may
likely feature this evening as his partnership with Joe
Gomez kept a clean sheet and helped earn victory in the
third round.
The Cork-born goalkeeper has established himself in
the Liverpool ranks. It was in the 2019/20 season when
Kelleher was given his Reds debut in the Carabao Cup
against MK Dons, before featuring twice more, including a
vital penalty shootout save to defeat Arsenal. The ‘keeper
would soon be granted both Champions League and
Premier League debuts in December 2020, keeping clean
sheets against Ajax and Wolves in place of the injured
Alisson. His impressive performances have caught the
eye of manager Klopp, who extended the 22-year-old’s
contract for an extra five years in June 2021. Kelleher
started Liverpool’s previous cup fixture, with a clean
After playing a big part in Liverpool’s 2019/20 Premier
League winning campaign, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
has found game-time harder to come by in the past two
seasons, including the current. To this point, he’s played
just 262 minutes in all competitions this term and if recent
reports are to be believed, he’s open to a move away from
Anfield in search of playing time. His former side Arsenal,
who he made 198 appearances for, are one of the teams
alleged to be back in for the midfielder. For the time being,
though, he remains a Liverpool player, and the man with
35 England caps could well be in contention to feature this
evening.
Now a household name with the Liverpool fans, Curtis
Jones has blossomed from the U9s to the senior side.
The midfielder’s first senior goal for the Reds came at
the perfect time, when he curled in a stunning goal in a
1-0 FA Cup win against rivals Everton. Jones became the
club’s youngest ever captain at 19 in the following round,
defeating Shrewsbury Town at Anfield, a moment he will
surely never forget. A lot of pressure is placed on him at
such a young age, but he loves the spotlight. In December
2020, Jones had all eyes on him as he scored his first
Champions League goal in the 1-0 win over Ajax, moving
Liverpool into the knockout phase.
MINAMINO
18
Divock Origi
A fan favourite for good reason. The Belgian cemented
his place in Liverpool history with some remarkable
memories made. Origi’s late goal in the 2019 Champions
League Final put the Reds in a 2-0 position, a scoreline
which would prove too much for Spurs to overcome.
He was also the star in their semi-final victory over
Barcelona. His two goals, one from a quickly-taken
corner, stunned the Spaniards into losing their 3-0
advantage in a game which ended 4-3. His Liverpool
career hasn’t always been a success, but the striker
has a habit of popping up with important goals. A prime
example would be his injury-time winner in the 2018/19
Merseyside derby, nodding the ball in the back of the net
after a mistake from Jordan Pickford.
ORIGI
Another product of RB Salzburg, Minamino won the
Austrian League for six seasons in a row between 2014
and 2020, also claiming five Austrian cups along the
way. He dazzled at Anfield in October 2019, scoring and
assisting for Salzburg in the Champions League to inspire
a 3-3 comeback, before losing 4-3 to the Reds. Soon
after the return fixture, Minamino was at Melwood to
complete a medical and sign for the opposition. With such
strong competition for places in his second season, he
was sent on loan to Southampton in February 2021 for the
remainder of the season, going on to play ten times for
the Saints. Now back under Klopp, Minamino scored two
to secure the next round fixture at Deepdale.
THE ONE AND ONLY
LAST FIVE
MANAGERS
RAFAEL BENÍTEZ // JUNE 2004 TO JUNE 2010 // SPANISH
Widely regarded as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever
managers, ‘Rafa’ oversaw the progress of the likes of
Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. His defining moment
came in the 2004/05 Champions League campaign. His side
pulled off the ‘Miracle of Instanbul’ to remarkably come
back from 3-0 down against AC Milan to win on penalties.
Rafa spent six years at Liverpool, before leaving by mutual
consent in 2010 after a spell of poor results.
THE BOSS
JÜRGEN KLOPP
OCTOBER 2015 TO PRESENT
GERMAN
Klopp joined in October 2015
and has turned Liverpool into a
world class outfit. 2018 would
cause heartbreak for the Reds,
as their Champions League
hopes were shattered with a 3-1
Final defeat against Real Madrid.
But this didn’t stop Klopp, as
he instantly rebounded and
infamously defeated Barcelona
in the semi-final after being
3-0 down in the first leg. The
stage was set, and Liverpool
had to beat Tottenham Hotspur
in the Final. They managed it
2-0, overcoming all odds to
finally hold the Champions
League trophy once again. The
Reds battled closely over the
years with Manchester City for
Premier League glory, before
winning the league in 2019/20
with 99 points and an 18-point
difference between the two
clubs. He’ll be hoping to lead
them to another trophy this
season.
ROY HODGSON // JULY 2010 TO JANUARY 2011 // ENGLISH
Roy Hodgson was appointed as manager in July 2010 and
his first league game was against Arsenal, which finished
in a 1-1 draw after a last-minute own goal from Pepe Reina.
It wouldn’t be long before the Reds were eliminated from
the League Cup on penalties by League Two’s Northampton
Town. After just seven league games in charge, Hodgson
admitted his side could be facing a relegation battle, third
from bottom at the time. He left the club in January 2011.
KENNY DALGLISH // JANUARY 2011 TO MAY 2012 // SCOTTISH
Firstly returning as caretaker manager, Liverpool
legend Kenny Dalglish was given the job permanently
in May 2011, and won Liverpool their first trophy in
six years as he lifted the 2011/12 League Cup. The Reds
would narrowly lose the 2012 FA Cup Final 2-1 to Chelsea,
yet finished eighth in the league, their worst finish
since 1994.
BRENDAN RODGERS // JUNE 2012 TO OCTOBER 2015 // N. IRISH
Unveiled in June 2012 as the new Liverpool boss, Rodgers
could only take the club to seventh in his first season in
charge. He would start to pick up the pace, winning two
Premier League manager of the month awards. Despite a
run of 11 wins on the bounce, two games without victory
at the crucial latter stages of the campaign handed the
title to Manchester City. In October 2015, Liverpool’s 225th
Merseyside derby with Everton ended 1-1 and pressure
mounted on Rodgers, as this was the fifth time in six games
they had drawn after being 1-0 up. Just an hour after the
game, he was sacked.
With Liverpool dominating, Riera’s
23 minutes and his shot flew into
the corner past goalkeeper Andy
However, Sean St. Ledger looked
to have equalised for North End,
but his header was ruled out
them every reason to fancy their
The form of Ross Wallace has
been key to the Lilywhites’ rise
bells were ringing for North End
after just 11 minutes when Riera’s
speed set up Robbie Keane who
shot badly wide.
With a Gerrard volley falling into
the grateful hands of Lonergan, it
was not long before the visitors
grabbed the lead on 24 minutes.
Despite a lucky bobble that
enabled the ball to end up with
Riera on the edge of the box,
there was nothing lucky about
the finish. The 26-year-old
Spanish international twisted and
turned, and with the defenders
mesmerized, and Lonergan’s view
partially blocked, Riera turned to
blast home the opener.
Keane should have had a hat-trick
by half-time, but a combination
of keeper Lonergan and wasteful
shooting denied the Irish striker.
The second period began in
similar fashion and Daniel Agger
should have doubled the lead
when he nodded a Gerrard corner
shockingly wide.
On the hour, Gerrard’s side-footed
shot was tipped over by Lonergan,
but it seemed to kick-start a home
team revival.
St. Ledger headed the ball into the
net with 17 minutes remaining,
but the wild celebrations were
curtailed with the impressive
Parkin having been spotted
hauling down Jamie Carragher on
the goal-line.
For the final 20 minutes, Liverpool
looked a little wobbly with Parkin
and Wallace proving a real
menace.
I KNEW
STEVEN GERRARD
WOULD PLAY
WELL, HE IS
FANTASTIC, TOP
CLASS, AND I
KNEW HE WOULD
DO THAT. I HAVE
VERY RARELY
SEEN HIM DO
ANYTHING LESS
THAN THAT.
OPPOSITION
As Alan Irvine’s men poured
forward in search of the equaliser
Liverpool broke away and Gerrard
capped off a fine display by setting
up substitute Torres to tap in from
three yards in his first game for
six weeks.
Liverpool assistant manager
Sammy Lee said afterward of
Steven Gerrard: “He is a great
footballer, he produced a terrific
performance. Things have been
written about him, but we know
that he is a terrific professional,
a model professional and this club
will put all our support behind
Stevie Gerrard.
“But he is a great servant for this
club, a great ambassador and
we will continue to support him
throughout, he’s a terrific guy.”
Preston North End manager Alan
Irvine added: “Our lads have been
excited ever since the draw, and
that was because they wanted to
play against Liverpool’s big stars.
“It has been an education for
them. For Sean St. Ledger to be
facing Fernando Torres was a
great education for him.
“I knew Steven Gerrard would
play well, he is fantastic, top class,
and I knew he would do that. I
have very rarely seen him do
anything less than that.”
THE ONE AND ONLY
THE LEGEND…
BILL SHANKLY
By Ian Rigby
Many younger football fans
may only know Bill Shankly as
Liverpool’s famous ex-manager,
but he was actually connected to
Preston North End Football Club
from 1933 to 1949.
There are football careers and there
are football careers, and Bill Shankly
had arguably the most colourful of
any footballer that has ever played for
Preston North End, along with Tommy
Docherty.
Bill was from the Scottish mining
town of Glenbuck, in Ayrshire,
and the village was renowned for
unearthing good footballers. Around
50 of the village youngsters became
professionals over the years with
seven being capped by Scotland.
Shanks’ Glenbuck-born uncles, Bob
and William Blyth, both played for
Preston North End and both later
became chairmen of football clubs,
Bob with Portsmouth and William with
Carlisle United.
After leaving school at the age of 14,
young Bill Shankly started work in the
local coalmine and had two years at
the pit before becoming unemployed.
He loved his football and although
he was training with the famous
Glenbuck Cherrypickers team, he
never actually played for them unlike
his four brothers. Instead he played
for a nearby team named Cronberry
Juniors. He was recommended to
Carlisle United where his uncle,
William Blyth, was now a director.
He managed just 16 games for the
Cumbrians before he was persuaded
to join North End in July 1933 for a
modest £350 down payment, with a
further £150 to be paid if retained
the following season! To say that was
£500 well spent, would be the ultimate
understatement!
When he signed he looked anything
but a future international player,
though he was full of enthusiasm for
the game, which lasted him a lifetime.
He always believed in his own ability
and was a fitness fanatic bursting
with energy and stamina. Like all
young players joining the club in those
days, he had to bide his time with the
reserve team in the Central League,
but he was soon knocking on the door
of the first XI.
Bill made his North End league debut
at Deepdale on 9th December 1933
in a 5-0 win versus Hull City. In the
remaining 24 games of that season,
PNE won 15, resulting in promotion
back to the top flight. His personal
displays went on to earn the respect
from his team-mates and opponents
alike, as North End became a force to
be reckoned within the frst division.
Shankly himself made 126 appearances
out of a possible 127 after making
his debut. PNE, prior to World War
44

HISTORICAL
One, played in two consecutive FA
Cup Finals, firstly being beaten 3-1 by
Sunderland in 1937, but the following
year Bill earned his coveted winners
medal, when North End defeated
Huddersfield Town.
By now he had caught the eye of
Scottish international selectors and on
9th April 1938, when Scotland played
England at Wembley, proud Preston
North End had four of their players
in that Scotland team which were
1-0 victors. Andy Beattie, Tom Smith,
George Mutch and Bill Shankly, earning
his first cap, were the four North
Enders selected for international
duty. On that particular April day, the
Lilywhites were FA Cup finalists and
in second place in the league. With
no league games postponed due to
international call-ups in those days,
North End had still to play their league
game against Derby County without
their four internationalists and still
won 4-1!
During the war he joined the RAF, but
was able to make guest appearances
for a number of clubs, as was the
norm in those days. One of those
appearances was for Liverpool in a
derby game against Everton. Having
earned five international caps prewar,
he also won seven unofficial caps
during the war and captained Scotland
in one of those games. Bill played in
over 100 games for PNE during the
war period, and in 1941 he played a
major part in North End winning the
war league and cup double.
Shankly was the nearest thing seen to
perpetual motion, but by the end of the
war even he had slowed down as the
war had taken its toll. Shankly played
his last game for North End against
Sunderland in March 1949. He became
player/coach to the reserve team,
but in October 1949 he returned to
Carlisle United as manager, and from
there he went on to great heights as
Liverpool’s world famous manager
via Workington, Grimsby Town and
Huddersfield Town.
Legend is a word overused in
football, but in Bill Shankly’s case
legend is the only word to use.
PNE Statistics: 297 league games (13
goals), 43 FA Cup (3 goals).
THE ONE AND ONLY
Born In Preston,
Played For North End
by Mike Payne
During Preston North End’s 141 year history, over 100 first-team players have been born here, in
Preston, and in this series of articles I would like to feature a selection of those that went on to play
for the club. I have decided to choose them at random, as I want to reach across the various eras,
to highlight the different social and sporting periods in which they played the game. They all had one
thing in common though, and it was that they were so proud to represent their hometown team.
PROUD PLAYERS
FOR PROUD PRESTON
There was only one player I could possibly choose
for this article today, and he is, of course, Mark
Lawrenson. The son of another former North
Ender, Tommy Lawrenson, Mark was always
destined to play for his hometown team who he
first joined as an apprentice, coming through
the junior ranks to earn himself a professional
contract in August 1974. It is not commonly known
that the young defender was given his Football
League debut by another footballing legend, Bobby
Charlton. Mark was a full back in his early days
and it was in the right back berth that he started
his first match, against Watford, at Deepdale, in
April 1975. That match ended 2-2, and it was a tough
baptism for the 17-year-old, as on the night the
whole defence looked a little shaky.
But Lawrenson had something about him, keeping
his place for the remaining two games that season
before establishing a regular place in the side
around the middle of the following campaign. By
then, he had moved into the centre of defence,
with his excellent reading of situations showing
what a good football brain he had. Lawrenson was
also quick and, despite his willowy frame, strong
too. It was obvious to the fans that North End had
uncovered a gem, but also to the knowledgeable
PNE supporters, they knew it would be almost
certainly impossible to keep him at Deepdale.
During the 1976/77 season Lawrenson was
outstanding, and his form culminated in being
chosen as the club’s Player of the Year, and never
has an award been more deserved. At that time,
Preston North End were a club that had to sell to
survive, and players of the year were often the
ones to go after winning the trophy. Such was the
case for Lawrenson, because during the summer
of 1977, a bid of £100,000 came in from Brighton &
46

HISTORICAL
Hove Albion, too good for North End to turn down,
and the player was on his way to the south coast.
It was a snip by today’s standards, but it was not
to be at Brighton where Lawrenson was to forge
his lasting legendary status, despite four excellent
years at the Goldstone Ground. This time it was Bob
Paisley who spotted the talent of the Prestonian,
paying a then club-record fee of £900,000 to take
the defender to Anfield to join Liverpool. It was a
dream move for Lawrenson, and funnily enough,
he made his debut for the Reds at full back as
well, before becoming one of the best central
defenders the game has ever seen. That fee of
£800,000 more than North End sold him for really
angered supporters of the Lilywhites – well it did
me anyway! But that’s the business side of football
I suppose, and I am now gradually getting over my
annoyance. However, nothing can detract from the
glorious career that Lawrenson went on to have at
Anfield, winning first division, FA Cup and European
trophies as well as a total of 39 full caps for the
Republic of Ireland, the first of those he won whilst
at Deepdale by the way. His partnership with Alan
Hansen was magnificent, and there are not enough
superlatives to describe his Liverpool career.
After finally leaving Merseyside in 1988, Lawrenson
did have a dabble at football management with
Oxford United and Peterborough, and he even
experienced the Conference with
Barnet, as well as one season of
football in the USA with Tampa Bay
Rowdies. Oh, and I must not forget
his success as a football pundit
on TV and radio, which he took to
like a duck to water. But before I
finish this article I would like to
take you back to the evening of
17th December 1976 and a night
under the lights of Deepdale
against Shrewsbury Town. Nobby
Stiles was in charge of the team
that night as manager Harry
Catterick had gone down with flu.
The match was a pre-Christmas cracker, with
North End missing chances, but generally having
the better of things. Just before the break, Mike
Elwiss missed a sitter, but just into the second
period PNE took the lead through a surprising
source. A right wing centre into the Shrewsbury
box from Jimmy Brown looked inviting. Up went
the heads and it was a superb glancing header
from Mr Mark Thomas Lawrenson that
beat Ken Mulhearn in the Shrewsbury
goal. Joyous scenes from players and
fans alike followed at the first ever
league goal by an outstanding footballer.
The match was on a knife-edge as the
90th minute approached. With two
minutes left, the visitors equalised
through Brian Hornsby, but North End
hit back and a magnificent header by
Lawrenson’s central defensive partner
David Sadler gave North End the points. It
was a night that Lawrenson would never forget, as
he had scored for the PNE first team, something
his dad never quite achieved. And finally, when
Mark was a guest celebrity on BBC’s Mastermind
show, he chose Preston North End as his specialist
subject, which just shows you his real allegiance
for tonight’s match.
48

HISTORICAL
Michael Appleton
At the time of his signing, Michael Appleton was PNE’s record buy, with the midfielder
arriving for £500,000 from Manchester United. He was at the club during a successful
period, as David Moyes led North End to a Play-Off campaign in 1998/99 before then
clinching promotion the following term. Appleton netted four goals during that season
and was then playing a key role in the side once in the second tier, although in January
2001 he moved on to West Bromwich Albion where he would soon go on to suffer a
serious injury.
Matthew Hill
Joining the Lilywhites in January 2005 for £100,000, Matthew Hill soon showed his
quality in a North End shirt, forming relationships on the left-hand side of the pitch with
the likes of Eddie Lewis and Callum Davidson. That first season was almost a perfect
introduction to life in Lancashire, going all the way to the Play-Off Final, but Billy Davies’
side were beaten 1-0 by West Ham United. Hill’s following season was disrupted by
injuries, but the 2006/07 campaign was his best in a PNE shirt and he was rightly given
the Player of the Year award for those performances. He went on to feature 26 times
the next season before moving on to Wolves, where he would earn promotion.
Danny Welbeck
Striker Danny Welbeck joined the club in January 2010 on loan from Manchester United,
when Darren Ferguson was the boss at Deepdale and his father Sir Alex was at the helm
at Old Trafford. Welbeck, a 19-year-old at the time, played just eight times for PNE in a
spell cut short by an injury, but there were still a few highlights. The main take from that
short period with the club was a fantastic goal which he scored against Ipswich Town,
as he superbly chipped the goalkeeper from just inside the 18-yard box.
@SSAMSEDDON WHO
IS THE BEST TEAM-
That’s a tough one. I’d probably have
difficult decision, but I’m settled up
JOHN WELSH
EXCITED TO BE BACK
Former Preston North End captain John Welsh will re-join the club as the Lead
Development Phase Coach with the Academy and is thrilled to be on the Lilywhites’
payroll once again.
56
John, who played for the club between 2012 and 2018,
and had a major part to play in PNE’s promotion to
the Championship in 2015, has been working with the
Academy during the past few weeks and this week began his
new permanent role.
He will oversee the age groups from U12s up to U16s, the
final step before players find out whether or not they will be
awarded a scholarship with the club.
He spoke to The One And Only just before kick-off at last
Wednesday’s home win over Coventry City and admitted he
had been getting more and more excited about getting into
post: “It has been four weeks in the making. Every day I have
woken up and been more excited about getting going,” he told
the matchday programme.
“I have been in the Academy for a few weeks now and not a
lot has changed; there are plenty of staff there who are great
for the football club and having a foot in and knowing what the
club is all about and what it takes to be a footballer at this club
is an experience I hope I can bring.
I THINK MOST
PEOPLE KNOW IT’S A
CLUB CLOSE TO MY
HEART SO TO COME
BACK AND WORK FOR
IT IN ANY CAPACITY IS
SOMETHING I’M REALLY
EXCITED ABOUT.
“We have a lot of players in the Academy set up, some great
coaches and there is everything there to be successful as a
young player and I can’t wait to get going.
“I’ve been taking the U16s for the last two or three weeks,
been loving it and obviously this opportunity has come up and
I’ve jumped at the chance of doing it.
“It’s just great to be back at the football club. I think most
people know it’s a club close to my heart so to come back
and work for it in any capacity is something I’m really excited
about and can’t wait to get going.”
Speaking to the club’s YouTube preview show the week of the
passing of Mr Hemmings, the former No.19 was keen to praise
the owner and his legacy: “It’s a very sad time. Any news like
that is terrible, especially when it is such a great man involved
in a football club that I love.
“He was well thought of within the club; the fans adored him,
as did the players and staff that worked for him. I can speak
for the playing staff from my time and you can see it in the
messages on social media that have gone out to his family and
that gives you an idea of what he meant to people.
“I have great memories of meeting him. As players, when
you were told he was coming down, it was always a nervous
time, but as soon as you see him, he would break the tension
straight away with his humour. He was quite firm in what
he wanted, but he was humorous and we always got the
conversation round to horse racing - having a bit of banter
about tips!
“With the charity of work he did, we attended a few events
around that and he did brilliant things for the community
and the club and I only have positive memories of my time in
his company.”
Back to football and tonight, a game that thrilled Welshy
as soon as it came out of the hat, having proudly pulled on
both the red of hometown club Liverpool and the lilywhite of
North End.

COACHING STAFF FEATURE
“When I first heard the draw I was delighted,” he continued.
“With a foot in both camps, I was really excited. It is a great
game for the football club and also the lads and staff.
“It is a good gauge for where we are at as a team and as
players and I am really excited for the lads, who I am sure will
do themselves proud on the day.
“I have come to the game with the kids today and they were
talking about the Manchester United game – which sticks out
as a game I was involved in. Being from Liverpool that added a
bit of needle and it was great to pit your wits against the best
players in the world.
“They had a full squad out, a decent team and it was brilliant
for us. For 65 or 70 minutes, we did really well, got ahead and
then the better players came into it in the business end of the
game – as well as having 12 men! – but that is what football
is all about.
“You always want to play against the best players who are out
there and this game will be a good gauge for the lads here at
Preston North End.”
And now, as an Academy member of staff, with a good group of
players who may be experiencing a full Deepdale and a world
class side visiting, what can those youngsters under his remit
learn from the experience?
“Even just the thought of being around the stadium; when you
come and see the lights on, at a night game, everything seems
more special, because it is slap bang there, right in front of
you and it makes it even more special to be seeing some of the
best players in the world – depending what team they bring,
but the best kids or players around.
“For players who are in the Academy to see that, it will not
only spur them on, with dreams to play for Preston North End,
but to want to play in games like that,” he added.
22ND MAY 2021 // SCOTTISH CUP FINAL
ST JOHNSTONE 1
(ROONEY, 32)
HIBERNIAN 0
-
AS IT HAPPENED:
Ali McCann plays 90 minutes as St Johnstone become the
first side outside of the Old Firm to win two major cups in
Scotland since 1989/90.
“It was just last year that we got to the
Scottish Cup final. It was the last game of
last season when we played Hibs and beat
them 1-0.
“We were going into it confident because we’d
beat them a few weeks earlier and it was a
chance to make history for the club because
two cups in one year is unheard of for St
Johnstone.
“We were confident going into the game
because we’d been there before. We’d been at
Hampden three times that year already and
won three times, so going into that game we
were all feeling positive, but we knew how big
of a deal it was for the club.
“The chance to win one trophy let alone two
doesn’t come round very often for St Johnstone
so it was a great day and a great night.
“Looking back on it now, it was just an
unbelievable achievement and whenever I see
a photo, the medal in my room or just anything
that reminds me of the game, it’s a great feeling
and sort of just sums up the time I had at the
club which was amazing for me.
“That game will always
stick with me, especially
because I left to come
down here not long after.
In terms of a memory, it
will always stick out as
an amazing thing to have
achieved, especially being
so young.”
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
PNE OPEN MULTI-FAITH
PRAYER ROOM
Preston North End Community and Education Trust opened a multi-faith prayer room earlier this
month, allowing supporters of all faiths and backgrounds to pray on home matchdays.
The prayer room is situated between blocks E and F on the
Invicibles Pavilion and was unveiled for use for the first
time ahead of Derby County’s visit earlier this month, as
part of the club’s Kick It Out matchday.
A number of activities were in place for Kick It Out
matchday, designed to promote equality for everyone
involved in football – fans, players and staff alike.
Supporters in attendance on a home matchday whose
ticket is not for the Invicibles Pavilion will be able to
access the prayer room by contacting their nearest
steward, who will escort supporters to the prayer room
every 15 minutes.
The prayer room will be open from 90 minutes before
kick-off, when the concourses open, through until fulltime
– allowing those who need to pray at certain times of
the day to leave their seat during the game if necessary.
Mo Patel – a practising Muslim supporter who
volunteered on PNECET’s Ramadan initiative earlier in
the year, and has since progressed to the role of casual
Community Engagement Coordinator with the Trust –
praised the initiative to open a prayer room.
He said: “Some supporters may have had to make a decision
between choosing to pray and attending a match during
certain parts of the season, due to the different times that
their religion may determine that they need to pray.
“We believe that supporters of all faiths should not have
to make that decision and we want to continue to break
down all barriers that may prevent any of our existing
fans from attending matches at Deepdale, while also
encouraging members of our local community to show
their support for PNE.
“The opening of the prayer room is another step in our
continued work with ethnically diverse members of our
community and we will continue to strive to make positive
changes to make Deepdale the most welcoming and
inclusive place it possibly can be for all fans.”
Mayor of Preston, Javed Iqbal, added: “It’s an absolute
pleasure and delight to open this multi-faith prayer room.
“I hope people will use it and it will help to bring more and
more people to North End.”
As part of the Kick It Out matchday, we welcomed Preston
United Youth Development programme participants and
their parents to watch the game against Derby County and
take part in our half-time penalty shoot out.
Some of those participants were also involved in a prematch
PL Kicks fixture against Derby County, with all those
involved invited to watch the main event at Deepdale later
that day.
Speaking about attending the game, a member of
the Preston United parents’ group said: “It was an
exhilarating experience, I really enjoyed it.
“I was really apprehensive at first but honestly I had a
brilliant time. I was conscious about my headscarf, but it
wasn’t noticed and I’m definitely coming again.”
leagues, against other professional clubs, including the EFL
Community and Education Football Alliance League.
With learners currently focusing on sports psychology,
Whiteman visited Preston College to answer the class’
questions both about that subject and his football career
more generally.
Whiteman said: “It’s been very good to come back out into
the community, it’s been a long time with Covid.
“It was very good and the learners asked some good
questions in terms of lifestyles and what it takes to become
a professional footballer. It was good to give them some
advice and it’s up to them now to take that on.”
PNECET Post-16 Curriculum Lead Zach Clark added: “We
were delighted to have Ben Whiteman joining our Preston
Centre of Sporting Excellence learners as a guest speaker
in a recent lesson.
“Our learners were able to ask Ben about aspects of an elite
athlete’s lifestyle, including his mentality and psychological
approach to training and matches.
“Gaining a real-life insight into these areas is a fantastic
way for our learners to relate their studies to real life
examples, particularly coming from aspirational figures like
Ben as a first team player for Preston North End.
“We’ve been pleased to continue to rely on the support
of our first team players to support our education
programmes in an online capacity during the pandemic, but
it was fantastic to welcome a player in-person again for our
learners to be able to physically see the close partnership
that we have with Preston North End.
“Our thanks go to Ben for answering our learners’
questions in a professional manner, and we look forward
to welcoming more of the first team squad into our lessons
throughout the academic year.”
THE ONE AND ONLY
17TH OCTOBER 2021 // PENWORTHAM PRIORY
PRESTON NORTH
END WFC 5
BURY FC
FOUNDATION 2
Preston North End Women produced a five-star display
against Bury FC Foundation to progress to the next round
of the Lancashire FA Women’s Challenge Cup.
PNE made it back-to-back wins after last weekend’s victory
against Accrington Stanley by beating the Shakers 5-2.
Goals from Freya Hunt and Olivia Askam in the first half
were followed by a second half brace from Lucy Swift and
a Katie Woodhead penalty, as things look to continue to fall
into place nicely for the women’s team.
In the first few minutes, North End dominated possession
and had some chances that they were unfortunate not to
take advantage of.
A lot of the opportunities came from build-up play from the
back, working their way up the pitch towards the goal, as
quick passing play helped them to keep possession.
Early opportunities fell for Swift, who was playing very well
and causing all sorts of problems for Bury’s defence from
the first whistle.
Good passing from the home side caused the visitors to look
unorganised at the back, as attack after attack from the
girls showed their ability.
One of those chances was a shot by Woodhead, which
caused the ‘keeper to pull off a very good save half-way
through the first half.
North End then had several corners in succession, but
initially couldn’t capitalise.
However, not long afterwards, in the 30th minute, Hunt
did head home from a corner as the girls deservedly took
the lead.
Just on the stroke of half-time, Askam doubled that lead
with a solo goal, creating the chance herself and placing the
ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The Lilywhites continued in the same goalscoring vain in
the second half, as only 12 minutes after the restart, Swift
finally got the goal she deserved after being unfortunate not
to score in the first half.
Bury did have some good spells of possession, and at times
put North End’s defence under pressure, testing their
solidity but they managed not to concede and stay on top.
PNE kept up their fantastic showing as Swift struck again
to increase the winning margin, finding the back of the
net with a very well-placed strike that went beyond the
outstretched goalkeeper.
There was another opportunity to add to the scoreline soon
after as a tough tackle on Swift in the box saw the referee
award the Lillywhites a penalty.
Yet again, Woodhead stepped up to take the penalty, and she
was cool, calm and collected once more as she scored to
put the girls five up.
Fresh legs were sought as Swift was replaced before she
had chance to claim her hat-trick, while goalkeeper Rose
Stuttard moved into attack as the versatile player showed
her class and knowledge of the game.
Bury started to find their ground a little bit more in the last
20 minutes, having had some good chances before finally
breaking down PNE’s defence and getting a goal back.
With only ten minutes left, the game became a bit more even
between the two teams; both having chances as the match
went back and forth in an entertaining watch.
Bury managed to get another goal just before full-time with
the game ending 5-2.
First team coach Nigel Greenwood was pleased to see the
team claim back-to-back wins.
He said: “The performance just carried on from last week to
be honest, we set off really smartly.
“The one touch football from the back was fantastic. The
play from the back helped us keep possession and score
five goals.
“The two midfielders, Freya Hunt and Katie Woodhead, ran
the show in the first half, I think that is where we set the
basis to win in the first half.”
North End are still transitioning into a team after the mass
recruitment of new players in the summer.
Nigel added: “[It’s taken] a bit of time to work as we brought
two squads together and today we saw signs of us getting
together.”
SWIFT: “ONE OF OUR
BEST PERFORMANCES”
Lucy Swift said PNE Women’s 5-2 win against Bury FC Foundation was one of the
team’s best displays of the season.
North End’s winning streak continued from the
previous week’s win against Accrington Stanley, with
the more recent triumph over the Shakers sealing
the Lilywhites’ progress in the Lancashire FA Women’s
Challenge Cup.
Swift, who scored twice in the second half against Bury,
was pleased with the performance both on an individual and
collective level.
She said: “The team played really well, it’s one of the best
team performances we have had.
“As a team we were really good at passing the ball around
and keeping the ball, staying relaxed and composed.”
PNE dominated possession throughout the game and didn’t
have any trouble scoring thanks to their controlled play
across the pitch, causing difficulties for Bury, which was
ultimately reflected in the scoreline.
Lucy continued: “The first half was not my strongest, but in
the second half, I got into my groove a bit more and got a
few goals.
“I think I’m definitely improving week on week, we’re still
getting to know each other, but making the right decisions
[on the pitch].”
A number of the women’s team players have recently moved
to Preston North End from Sir Tom Finney Ladies, along with
coaches Nigel Greenwood and David Rawcliffe, and Swift
feels they are definitely coming together more as a team
now.
THE TEAM PLAYED
REALLY WELL, IT’S ONE
OF THE BEST TEAM
PERFORMANCES WE HAVE
HAD.
Swift was substituted late on, before she had chance to
claim her hat-trick, but she was still pleased with the game
as a whole.
She added: “I’m happy with the two goals. I know I could get
a couple more, but I won’t be greedy so I will take that.”
Victory over the Shakers moves North End into the round of
16 of the Women’s Challenge Cup.
RESTART A HEART
Saturday 16th October marked not only one of our more
recent home fixtures against Derby County, but also the
National Restart a Heart Day.
Restart a Heart Day looks to increase the rates of
bystanders to a cardiac arrest being CPR trained, and thus
reduce the number of avoidable fatalities.
More than 30,000 cardiac arrests happen outside a hospital
every year, but unfortunately, as few as ten per cent
of those survive. Conversely, immediate bystander CPR
doubles the chance of survival following cardiac arrest.
Lancaster University medical students were present in
the fan zone for the Derby game to show and educate
supporters about CPR and defibrillation techniques with
the aim of increasing the rate of bystanders able to
provide CPR.
HAF PROGRAMME AIDING
POSITIVE BEHAVIOURAL
CHANGES IN CHILDREN
PNECET’s delivery of the Holiday Activities and Food [HAF] programme throughout August allowed
one child to improve both their behaviour and their relationships with the rest of their family, while
also becoming more active and eating more healthily.
The HAF programme supported 217 young people daily
throughout August with the provision of free school meals,
educational workshops and physical activity sessions,
primarily reaching children who would ordinarily access
free school meals in term-time.
The programme provided support for children of all ages
and in all areas of Preston, with HAF being delivered at five
sites across the city, and clubs running both for five to
11-year-olds and for 12 to 16-year-olds.
Children were able to learn with empowering educational
workshops normally delivered on the Primary Stars
programme, focusing on areas such as racism and mental
health, while remaining active and engaged by playing a
range of sports and games.
As well as that, though, one child accessing the Trust’s
HAF programme at Ribbleton Infants and Junior School
has become noticeably better behaved – both by PNECET
staff and the boy’s parents – and as a result has seen an
improvement with his family at home.
The child’s mother said: “A staff member rang me to say he
had a place, and I got off the phone and cried because he’s
that bad at home, so much hard work at home, that I was
ready for losing it. It was a massive weight lifted for him to
come and for him to have a break from me as well.
“If he was at home, he’d be playing on his computer
constantly. I’d rather him be here and be out than sat
cooped up in his bedroom. He’s getting to know more adults
as well.
“Although he still pushes his boundaries, I’ve noticed a
change in him since he’s been coming. He’s not been as hard
work and he’s listening more.”
The child, who is being assessed for ADHD and autism, said:
“I definitely like coming here. I’ve liked coming and drawing,
I enjoy everything. I do things here that I don’t do at home.”
The provision aims to help children eat more healthily with
the provision of fruit as part of their daily lunches.
The child’s mother added: “He’s a very fussy eater and
wouldn’t normally eat tuna at home but he loves it here.
He eats more healthily here because he doesn’t eat fruit
at home.
“He comes home with grapes, apples – even his brother
gets something on the way out and he doesn’t eat fruit
either, but it’s helping him as well.”
PNECET initiatives, please email community@pne.com.
THREE of
the BEST
This season, we want supporters to
share with us their favourite three things
about being a PNE fan, whether that be
a favourite goal, kit, player, match or
memory. It’s up to you!
All you need to do to take part is email
media@pne.com with the subject ‘Three Of The
Best’ and include the following information.
Sixty to 90 words about each of your three picks,
explaining why you have chosen them, and also
attach a high-resolution photo of yourself, as well
as your date of birth.
Stephen Thompson, 37
1. WAND OF A LEFT FOOT
The best player I’ve seen during my time supporting PNE is David
Eyres. He joined PNE around the same time I started going on
Deepdale regularly and I loved the way played. He had a wand of
a left foot and scored some cracking goals. I always remember
him scoring a brace against Blackpool in front of the Town End
– what a day! I remember getting the chance to meet him before
a game and was just completely starstruck. He was my first PNE
idol.
2. UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
One of my favourite memories of supporting PNE was having the
chance to be a mascot when we played Burnley at Turf Moor
when David Moyes was manager. I got to train on the pitch with
the players before the game, and Lee Ashcroft and Simon Davey
kicked Tepi Moilanen out of the nets so they could take shots
at me. I also got to meet all the players in the dressing room
before the game. Fortunately my nan, who came with me, went
completely snap-happy with the camera!
3. WHAT A KIT!
The blue Baxi away kit with the yellow fluorescent
sponsor will always be one of my favourites. This was the first
full kit I owned and wore it when I was mascot at Burnley. It was
just so different at the time and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kit
like it since.
