Why not treat yourself and your partner to a romantic date
night spoil to welcome in the festive season this month?
There are very few places as elegant and romantic as The Oyster
Box Hotel’s stylish Grill Room, headed up by renowned KZN chef
Kevin Joseph. This beautiful restaurant, which has been serving
up wonderful cuisine and gracious service for more than 70 years,
recently updated its menu - and it definitely has our stamp of
approval! The food is sophisticated without being pretentious and
full of wonderful surprises and flavours. The Crispy Citrus Crayfish
is a must-try as a starter, as are the Pan Seared Scallops. For mains,
we can highly recommend the Norwegian Salmon, Silent Valley
Wagu or Prawn and Crab Ravioli. The desserts are, of course, visual
and flavour masterpieces and the wine selection absolutely onpoint.
Treat yourself to dinner at this gorgeous spot ... you know
you deserve it! Details: 031 514 5000
One of our very favourite diary events of the year is set
to take place this month and we cannot wait. This year’s
annual Christmas Country Fair at Collisheen Estate will run over
three days, from 25 to 27 November (which includes a weekend
day for the first time ever!). The theme this year is Silver Linings
– Community and the fair has loads of beautiful new creatives
lined up, as well as an incredible Christmas Fair stand, filled with
exquisite, handmade Christmas spoils. Think ‘Christmas in a box’,
table runners, table cloths, napkins, cutlery holders and décor - all
in rich colours and botanicals. Saturday will see the guys enjoying
rugby on a big screen, a braai and craft beer for sale and there
will be a children’s entertainment and craft area where they can
write letters to Santa! Now in its 69th year, the fair is the Christmas
Fair Fund’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The well-known, trusted
NPO distributes funds to carefully selected organisations on the
North Coast, with their focus being on education and health.
Tickets must be booked online (www.quicket.co.za) and there is a
special, discounted two-day ticket on offer. Entrance is R65 (kids
13 and under are free) and there is a pensioner’s rate of R50 at the
gate on Saturday. The fair will do late trading on Friday until 7pm,
with live music, late shopping and a champagne and gin bar!
4
There are very few things that make you feel as good
as doing something special for someone in need. The
wonderful Santa Shoebox Project, now in its 16th year,
allows members of the public the chance to share a
little joy with an underprivileged child at Christmas
time. Over the years, the NGO has identified eight items
that should be included in each box: a toothbrush,
toothpaste, an outfit of clothing, facecloth, soap, school
supplies, a toy and sweets. All items must be new and
age-appropriate. Gateway Theatre of Shopping have
partnered up with Santa Shoebox and have become
one of the official drop off points (next to Ocean Basket
in the Palm Court from 4 to 6 November). Before this
intense collection weekend, the mall’s info desk will be
collecting boxes from 1 October to 3 November as well.
Last year just over 1 600 shoeboxes were pledged for
Umhlanga and this year the charity hopes to increase
this number. To get involved simply registering on the
website: www.santashoebox.org.za and select a child
to pledge to by their name, age and gender. A QRcoded
label is generated, which must be secured to the
shoebox, to ensure your box reaches the right little one.
Blizzards. Strikes. Bodies. Power cuts. Terrorist threats. And Showaddywaddy’s
Greatest Hits topping the album charts. 1979 started off badly, and it got worse. But,
for journalist Allie Burns, someone else’s bad news was the sound of opportunity
knocking. So it may well be the winter of discontent, but she’s one of the few women
in the newsroom, and she’s chasing her big scoop. In 1979, the first of Val McDermid’s
Allie Burns series, the journalist and a colleague are exposing the criminal underbelly
of respectable Scotland, risking, obviously, making powerful enemies. Things hot
up when she uncovers a home-grown terrorist threat, and comes up with a plan to
infiltrate the group ... a move where putting a foot wrong could be fatal. Val’s upped
her already sky-high thriller level in this one ... it’s not only the icy weather that makes it
chilling. Little Brown • It’s Karen Rose. And there’s a cult. Do you need to know anything
more before you rush out and buy this one? FBI Agent Tom Hunter is chasing leads to
find the cult that damaged some of his closest friends. They managed to escape, but
one of the cult’s leaders is hunting them down. He’s out of control; the only person
who he may listen to is cult leader Pastor, a person no outsider has ever seen. When
serious injury has Pastor having to venture outside the cult compound, it’s Tom’s
chance to act, and bring the cult down. You had us a cult ... you know Say Goodbye
is going to be gripping, thrilling, and keep you up all night. It’s the third in the
Sacramento series – read Say You’re Sorry and Say No More first, if you can, but this does
also read well as a stand-alone. Headline
We’ve recently discovered Nalu wines ... a small selection of excellent wines, each of
which stand for something the Nalu team are passionate about. This month we’re
loving the Nalu Sauvignon Blanc 2020, a pale straw-coloured wine with light green
hue ... fresh with the tanginess of green figs and a zesty citrus twist. Lovely, and even
more enjoyable knowing by drinking this, we’re supporting the Two Oceans Aquarium
Education Foundation. Nalu (with a Hawaiian origin, means surging surf or what we
call wave) is inspired by the nature of SA, including its coastline and sea life, and a
percentage of every bottle is donated to the foundation. R68 from naluwines.com

True surrender
It’s not often that you meet someone who is as focussed and confident about
their direction in life as Nikita Gouveia. Our November cover girl is a former
f ever there was someone who truly ‘lives the brand’, Nikita is that
person. The name of her company, JustBe, is much more than
just a name. It is her mantra. Her motto. And the way she lives her life.
“I’ve lived by this principle for most of my life. Life can be distracting,
but all you really have to do is, ‘just be’. Be authentic, follow your
intuition and leave the fear of other people’s opinions behind you.”
Originally from Johannesburg, 32-year-old Nikita has been living in
Ballito for three years. Before that, the world was her playground. “I
have always been a free spirit and I wanted to travel. My mom made
me study after school, but as soon as I completed my marketing
degree, I was off.”
Nikita started dancing when she was young. She competed in
Latin American and Freestyle dance competitions from the age of 13 and even
represented South Africa in the world dance championships in England in 2010.
When she started looking for jobs overseas, dancing was the most obvious
way to get there. “I am not a planner. I am very spontaneous. When I got a job
dancing at a hotel in Mexico with 30 other dancers, I didn’t realise no one else
really spoke English! I had to teach myself Spanish quickly,” she laughs. “I was also
told that I had to lose 10kg’s when I got there as I was bigger than the other
dancers. It was a very tough time.”
After Mexico, Nikita spent six months in Ibiza and then went to India. “I didn’t
want to stay in one place for too long and I always travelled on my own. I like
making my own decisions.” Although she didn’t have a job in India, Nikita says
she knew she’d be able to ‘hustle’ and make it work. It was in Mumbai that she
discovered the Bollywood dancing scene and got a job working as a cheerleader
for the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket league.
On a trip to Northern India, with hardly any money and nowhere to stay, Nikita
found herself living in an Ashram. “I was told that I could stay there for free for a
week, as long as I did ‘services’ like cooking, cleaning and gardening. And that
was where I discovered yoga,” she says. “Every day you have to do yoga and
meditate and a spend few hours in ‘noble silence’. I was hooked and immediately
started researching more about the
practice.”
Nikita went back to Mumbai for
a month to do one last IPL gig in
order to have enough money to pay
for a yoga teacher training course.
Although she never intended on
teaching yoga, Nikita ended up
doing three courses. “I just wanted
to completely indulge and immerse
myself in the practice.”
Her next job was as a dancer on an
Italian cruise liner. Six months later,
she returned to South Africa and
moved to Cape Town. “I got a job as
a waitress and, because I had never
done it before, I ended up dropping a
lot of cocktails,” she laughs. After that,
Nikita worked in marketing, where she
says, she learnt a lot. She also met her
partner, Andy, who lived in Ballito. She
moved to Brettenwood to be with
him three years ago. “I never thought
I’d move for love, but here I am,” she
smiles. “I’m still a very free spirit, but I
love that it’s quieter here and I am less
distracted. That, along with my age
and experience, have allowed me to
figure things out and consolidate who
I am and where I’m going.”
Nikita’s brand has three branches: a
marketing and branding company,
yoga and mindfulness classes at
Brettenwood Coastal Estate and the
retail side, Just Be lifestyle.
Not just a yoga brand, Nikita says Just
Be is for those who have a lust for
life and who are eager to embrace
their uniqueness. The range includes
locally handcrafted cork bags and
wallets and bright colour and print
yoga apparel. All of the bags are
named after one of the places Nikita
has been. “I’ve travelled to 32 different
countries, learning about different
cultures and embarking on thrilling
journeys. I’ve tried to grow from every
situation and experience and draw
inspiration from the people I’ve met
and places I’ve seen.”
Para surfing legend
Determined, resolute, ambitious and slightly obsessive.
This is how South African para surfing champion David
Williams’ friends and family might describe him. We think
he is also incredibly brave and inspiring. This is his story.
Text: Leah Shone
How does someone who only took up a sport a year ago, go on to win the
national championships and be chosen to represent his country overseas?
Determination, courage and a passion for the sport he has fallen in love
with, that’s how. A bilateral congenital amputee, David knows a thing or two
about determination and courage. Born without legs, David has had to work
harder than most to achieve success in his 34 years of life. But that hasn’t held
him back. In fact, one might say it’s made him stronger.
Despite having only started surfing just over a year ago, the Umhlanga
IT specialist recently won the KZN para surfing championships and went
on to be crowned the SA para surfing champ in the kneel division. Now
he’s getting ready to represent his country in the ISA world para surfing
championships in the USA in December.
When he was born, David’s parents were told he would never walk. “My
mom was adamant and, even though it was incredibly painful and hard,
she persisted with the prosthetics until one day I was walking.” As a young
child, David never thought he was different to anyone else until he started
going to school. There, he says, he suffered years of bullying. “I’ve only started
talking about it quite recently. The bullying was bad. Kids will be kids, I guess,
and often I just laughed along with them when they teased me.” Those
experiences had a long-lasting effect on him and influenced the person
David became. “One of my favourite sayings is, ‘love all, trust few, harm none.”
After school, David got a job at the bank. Five years later, despite having
no experience or qualifications, he applied for a temporary job in software
testing at Dervico. “God only knows why I thought I could get job, but for
some reason, I did!” Adamant to prove to his peers (and himself ) that he was
the right guy for the job and get a permanent position, David and spent the
next two years studying as much as he could and worked his way up to test
manager. He is now an IT quality assurance manager for Mr Price.
Although he attempted able-bodied sports at school, it was only when David
was 24 years old and met South African Paralympic athlete Tyrone Pillay
that he discovered the world of disabled sports. “I found a swimming coach
in Durban and started participating in hundreds of disabled races at ablebodied
galas. I am very competitive and slightly obsessive when I decide to
do something and I threw myself into swimming training. I did well, even
breaking a few records and trying out for the Rio Paralympics. I also tried my
hand at adaptive rowing, where I also placed in several provincial events, but
I never quite made the cut to represent SA. ”At the beginning of 2020, David
was invited to try out adaptive surfing with a non-profit organisation called
Made for More. “I was nervous. I have feared the ocean my entire life,” he says,
“but the Made for Me team were amazing. They made me feel so incredibly
safe and welcome from the first day. I will never forget the way I felt when I
caught my first wave. I fell in love with surfing immediately.”
12 Get It • Ballito Umhlanga November 2021

Since then, David says surfing has been about just having fun. “When
you’re training for swimming or rowing, you know you are training to
compete. When I’m surfing, I’m just out there having fun and conquering
fears!”
David was invited to participate in the KZN para surfing champs in March
this year and was blown away when he won. He was automatically
entered into the SA champs. “I can’t say it was a dream come true,
because I would never have dared to dream this. Surfing was so far out
of my mind and my world and it was just such an honour to compete
against the top para surfers.”
With his family and friends there to support him at the SA champs in
May this year, David headed into the water with a goal of just having fun.
In the end though, he took first place and became the SA para surfing
champ in the kneel division. “It was the best sporting event of my life. My
mind literally went blank when they called my name,” he says. Now David
will join the rest of the SA para surfing team as they head off to compete
in California in December. He and his team mates are raising funds to
get them to the event through their respective Backabuddy pages.
“Representing my country and wearing SA colours is the biggest dream
come true for me. I wouldn’t have been able to get here without the
support of my incredible girlfriend, Kayla, who has stood by me through
all the good and bad times. I’m also so grateful to Elton Lee Irleand Els
surfboards for sponsoring my boards and fins and all my other sponsors
and the people who have donated to our fundraising drive.”
Trail running champ
When it comes to road running in SA, the Comrades Marathon is seen as the ultimate
challenge. In the trail running world, it’s completing a 100 Miler. Salt Rock’s Andrew
Erasmus recently placed second in the popular Karkloof 100 Miler - for the third time!
Text: Leah Shone
“It was probably the toughest mental
journey I’ve ever been on,” says Andrew
about his recent 20-hour endurance
run in the Karkloof valley, just outside
Howick. “But I have to go back next
year. I have to win it,” he laughs.
Andrew, a 39-year-old landscape
manager, has become well known in
the South African trail and endurance
running circles. He almost always
finishes on the podium and often wins
his races.
He is highly competitive and loves
pushing boundaries and trying new
routes and challenges. He also loves
helping fellow runners achieve their
goals.
Growing up in Johannesburg, both
Andrew and his twin brother Steven,
who he is very close to, were skilled
athletes, particularly in running
disciplines.
Andrew moved to Cape Town after
school and, at the age of 24, joined
his brother who was already living in
Ballito. “I had stopped doing sports and
started partying, probably a little too
hard. It was my brother who convinced
me to get into mountain biking when I
moved here and it completely changed
my life. I started enjoying a healthier
lifestyle and became a better person.”
Although he competed in a few
mountain biking races, Andrew says
he always ended up with a puncture
- or getting lost! “My brother got me
to do some adventure races with him
(which includes running, paddling,
cycling, swimming and abseiling) and
we realised we did really well in the
running part. So, we branched off and
focussed on running.”
Andrew’s first marathon was the Sani
Stagger, which he did in preparation for
the Comrades Marathon in 2010.
He discovered his love for trail running
when he and his brother took part
in the Mnweni Marathon - a selfnavigated
trail race in the Drakensberg
– in 2012. They placed fifth and vowed
they would come back the following year and win it, which they did. After that,
Andrew dived into as many races as he could. He s was sponsored by Salomon
and says his then fiancée (now wife) Louise, was very patient while he spent
almost every weekend running in the mountains!
Amongst his many achievements, Andrew has placed second in the Fish River
100km twice and won in the African X mixed team stage race. In 2018 he came
third in the extremely challenging Ultra Trail Drakensberg 100 Miler. He took
some time off from races when his daughter was born in 2019 and the 2020
lockdown put things on hold a little longer.
This year, he has managed to achieve a FKT (fastest known time) for the
Drakensberg Northern Traverse, as well as for a new project called Sea to Summit,
which saw him and a fellow runner being the first to run over 355km from
the lowest point in South Africa (Durban) to the highest (the peak of Mafadi
Mountain in the Drakensberg) over three days.
“I love long distance runs. You have to plan carefully and really get your training
right. You want to have had enough training to be competitive at the start,
without being injured. It’s also important that you plan your race and nutrition
carefully. Mental strength is hugely important. You can beat people who are
faster runners than you if your mind is stronger than theirs. I often jokingly say
that distance runners simply have the ability to suffer a little more than others ...”
Andrew came second in his first Karkloof 100 Miler in 2017 and had a great race.
He finished just three minutes behind the winner. This year was a little different.
“It was probably the worst race of my life,” he admits. “I got really sick about 20km
in and couldn’t keep any food down.
I was lucky to have my brother and
an incredible crew to help push me.
Every time I saw them, I got the rush
of adrenalin I needed to get me
going again. At halfway, I was about
five minutes behind the leaders in
third and fourth place, but I was
completely empty and just wanted
to sit down. Steven wouldn’t let me
and encouraged me to start chasing
the leaders. About 4km later I was
finished. I could barely put one foot in
front of the other, but he wouldn’t let
me lie down. It was one of the darkest
places I’ve been to, mentally, and he
really helped me through it.”
Despite being ill and running in
nearly 40-degree heat, Andrew took
second place. “It was a really cool
achievement. Pulling myself out of
that horrible place mentally was very
hard, but I guess that’s why we do
races like this - to see how far we can
push ourselves. I couldn’t have done it
without my fantastic team, though.”
Andrew says the reason he loves the
Karkloof 100 is because there are
loads of spectators, as well as crew
and pacers. “It’s special. There are so
many people rooting for you and
finishing with a pacer is great because
you get to share that moment with
someone.”
So, what’s next for the adventure
athlete? “Next month a group of us
are going to help a friend break the
ladies record for the Drakensberg
grand traverse, which entails running
from one end of the Drakensberg to
the other, over all the major peaks!
There are a few other races planned,
including the Ultra Trail Drakensberg
in April and then, of course, I have
to go back to Karkloof to hopefully
clinch the first place in 2022!”

Active comfort and elegance
The athleisure fashion trend seems to be here to stay … and we couldn’t be happier. The
latest activewear range to hit the North Coast was created by a young entrepreneur who
wanted to make it easy for people to go from doing everyday life straight to gym, with ease!
Feeling comfortable and looking
stylish. It’s the ultimate fashion goal,
right? Add versatility and the fact
that this range is made to suit all
body types … and you have a pretty
awesome combination!
Founded by 20-year-old Ballito
resident Gemma Limbert, Gaia
Activewear is all about making
women feel good about themselves,
while at the same time making their
lives a little easier.
“I used to go to gym when I was in
matric, but often had to cancel with
my trainer because I just didn’t have
time to change into gym clothes.
My mom, who is always rushing
from work to gym, had the same
problem. My goal was to create
interchangeable outfits that would
make it easy to transition from
leisurewear to activewear quickly and
easily.”
Fashion was never the direction
Gemma saw herself going in, but
when Covid forced her to stay home
instead of going overseas to study
architecture as planned, she decided
to start her own business.
As the daughter of Mangwanani
founder Erin Limbert, Gemma
says she grew up surrounded by
entrepreneurs. “I loved my childhood.
We moved around a lot when I was
little, but settled in Zimbali when I was
five years old. We travelled extensively
and I hope to continue travelling for
the rest of my life. I’ve already been to
18 countries,” she says, smiling.
Although she was never strong at academics at school, Gemma says she did very
well in her matric year and was accepted to study architecture at the Queensland
University of Technology in Australia. “But then Covid happened and, because I
was still so young, I didn’t want to go so far from home and risk being stuck there
on my own.”
Forced to keep herself busy while at home, Gemma came up with the idea of
Gaia Activewear. “We are an entrepreneurial family. My sister and I were always
dreaming up business ideas growing up and we would talk about them at the
dinner table. She even has a collection of logos and business names that we
came up with,” Gemma laughs.
“I never wanted to study fashion design, but I have always loved fashion and
feeling confident in what I’m wearing. I know if I have a good outfit on, I’m going
to have a good day!”
It is the versatility of the items, she says, that really sets the brand apart from
others. The range includes seamless, ribbed leggings and shorts and bra sets
in a variety of beautiful, neutral colours. Another thing worth mentioning is the
fact that items are suitable for all body types. “I was never the ‘skinny girl’ growing
up and finding comfortable exercise clothes was a challenge. They always
seemed to be made for smaller bodies. I was determined to create a brand that
comfortably fits all body types. I’m passionate about promoting body positivity
for all shapes and sizes.”
Giving back – to those in need and the environment – are important factors
that Gemma hopes to incorporate into her brand as it continues to grow.
She has goals of making Gaia completely environmentally-friendly and would
like to create a channel that allows her to lift up those from disadvantaged
communities. “The aim is to eventually manufacture everything locally and I see
us going into Africa and building hospitals and schools one day. I know these are
big dreams, but I think we can get there. This is an ethos we learnt from our mom
and my sisters and I all love giving to others. It makes us happy.”
Art meets fashion
A skilled stylist and the
co-owner of a successful
boutique retail brand for
many years, Adele Grace
discovered her hidden talent
and passion for painting
during lockdown last year.
Now she is collaborating
with top fashion houses and
has even launched her own
fabric and wallpaper range.
Text: Leah Shone
It is quite remarkable when fashion,
art and décor collide. Adele, one of
the founders of the well-known Adele
Catherine retail range, is all about
finding the beauty around her. “I love
what I do. I live by the Elsie de Wolf
quote that says, “I will make everything
around me beautiful and that will be my
life.”” Having recently relocated to Ballito
from the Midlands, we asked Adele
about herself and her new collection.
Tell us a bit about your career and
background.
After studying graphic design I went to
work in the advertising industry where I
was introduced to the world of styling.
I loved it and was able to work with
Durban’s top brands and models. This is
where I discovered a huge love for visual
merchandising and product sourcing.
Tell us about your range.
Catherine and I opened our first
Adele Catherine store in 2016 in Kloof,
alongside the Bellevue Cafe. This isn’t
your typical retail space. It’s full of charm
and soul and opens onto a nursery
stocked with a special collection of
indigenous plants. In 2018 we opened
our second store in Joburg in the
BluBird shopping centre. We recently
also launched our online store. Most
of our products are handcrafted and,
whenever possible, locally sourced.
The very talented Adele
We are lucky to work with a wide range of incredible
artists who work in many mediums – from ceramics and
photography to water colour, fashion and jewellery. We
offer a curated selection of lifestyle products, from home
fragrances to fashion, décor and gifting.
When did you first discover your passion for painting?
I am going to take this opportunity to wear my heart on
my sleeve and be very honest. I hit rock bottom during
the first lockdown. It was then that I discovered my
hidden talent and love for painting and I’ve never looked
back. It was a huge blessing for me emotionally as well as
financially and it has brought me so many opportunities.
A true case of ‘after rain, comes flowers’. I have since
launched a wallpaper and fabric range in collaboration
with T&Co and The Silk & Cotton Co called The Adele
Grace Mbali Collection.
Tell us about your fashion collab with Ella Sol Clothing.
Kelly from Ella Sol approached me with a dream that she
has had since starting her brand and I welcomed the
opportunity to explore textile. She dreamt of blending
her love for art with fashion and being able to combine
something local and extraordinary with current trends. I
feel very honoured to be part of this venture. We are both
‘growing with the flow’.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I draw my inspiration from images that make me feel
something … either joy or aspiration. I celebrate the
strength of the female form and like to show African
woman in a beautiful, sophisticated way, portraying
strength and stirring emotion. With my fashion styling
background I love fashion images, and have also painted
some fashion pieces that are feminine and true to who I
am and what I personally love. I have also recently started
drawing inspiration from nature as my daughter York is an
absolute wild child and inspires me every day with all her
discoveries. My Mbali wallpaper and fabric collection is
based on my daughter and our time together outdoors.
A taste of
today’s
batch …
Nothing beats tucking into a slice of
hot, homemade bread with a generous
slather of butter or yummy sauce to
dip it into. Brettenwood-based mother
and daughter team, Annie and Angela
Batchelder recently started a ‘side hustle’
that has quickly grown into an exciting
(and yummy) business venture. We’ve
tasted the goods ... and we are sold!
Text: Leah Shone | Photographs: Robyn Rose Photography
Food and cooking have always been an important part of
the Batchelder home. “We grew up in the kitchen. There was
always music on in the background and we all got involved
in whipping up amazing meals and trying new recipes. As a
family, cooking is definitely very much part of who we are,”
says single mom and qualified chef Angela. With a fun play on
their surname, Batchelder, Ang and her mom Annie recently
launched their home-based industry business called Today’s
Batch. Having grown up in Durban, Angela qualified as a chef
after school and then went overseas where she spent the
next 14 years as a head chef on yachts. She returned to South
Africa three years ago and is now a single mom to her 7-yearold
daughter. Annie is a self-dubbed ‘serial entrepreneur’. She
started a lampshade business, a sun hat business and a sports
management business and has been organizing the wellknown
Amashova cycle race for the past 30 years. When Angela
returned home she joined the Amashova team. “With events
being put on hold for the past year and a half, cooking became
a welcome distraction,” says Annie. “My mum, Annie and I have
always cooked together and friends were always asking for a
bottle of our chilli or marmalades, so we started making enough
to have on hand for friends and family when they came around.
During the KZN riots, when bread wasn’t available, we started
making enough sourdough bread for our neighbours. Before
we knew it, we were struggling to keep up with the 65 loaves
we had pre-ordered every week!”
Annie and Angela Batchelder

Since then, the Today’s Batch menu has grown substantially and they now have
an offering of over 17 products … and it’s still growing. The logo and look and
feel of the brand are simple, clean and elegant and the name, Annie says, was
a no-brainer! “We want to show how easy it is to put a few things together and
make a show-stopping harvest table that will cater for even the fussiest eaters. It’s
a great way to entertain that is also affordable.”The signature Jalapeno Coriander
Sauce is a definite must-try on the menu. With a mild bite, it can be added to
almost anything. “It’s definitely become one of our hot favourites. It came about
when we were trying to taper down our original chili sauce for a friend who
couldn’t handle the heat.” The sourdough bread is absolutely delicious and
Annie and Angela have one or two new ideas up their sleeves, which they’ll be
launching at this year’s annual Christmas Country Fair at Collisheen Estate from
25 to 27 November. For now though, their range (which, apart from the chili and
sourdough, also includes marmalades, chimichurri, kalamata olive tapenade,
spicy chili mayo, jalapeno mayo, melt-in-your-mouth pecan biscuits and pickled
veggies) is available to order via whatsapp or through their social media pages.
Fearless & flavourful
It was the beautifully simplistic and elegant white bottle with cork lid that first drew
us to Karoa Cara White gin, but the wonderful flavour and passion of the Ballito
founders kept us captivated.
This is unlike any other gin you’ve
ever tasted. Not only does it have
the wonderfully unique flavour
combination of spearmint and
cardamom, but it’s also South Africa’s
only cloudy gin on the market.
“We like to think of ourselves as
trend-makers rather than trend
followers,” says Mntunzini-based cofounder
Janie Barnes. “My husband
and I both have rebellious spirits. We
like to go against the grain and do
things differently.”
Originally a farm girl and horse
trainer from Namibia, Janie, with her
husband Elwin, first started toying
with the idea of distilling about five
years ago. Elwin is an engineer and
the couple moved to Mtunzini in
Zululand from Gauteng 11 years
ago.
“We watched a documentary about
distilling and thought it would be a
good business idea,” she says. “We bought a small, 5-litre still (that was full
of leaks and hardly worked) and starting experimenting. We never made
it to drink ourselves, this was always going to be a business.”
Now the couple, along with their business partners and close friends
Sonnia and Harold Kruijer, have a fully-fledged, Ballito-based distillery
where they make the country’s only cloudy gin.
A true labour of love, Janie (who owns her own beauty salon in Mtunzini)
says it took over two years to get this product on the shelves. There was
lots of blood, sweat and tears as well as waiting for licenses and legalities
and, of course, hundreds upon hundreds of hours spent perfecting the
flavours. “When we started, the gin craze had just taken off and everyone
was using florals and citrus flavours. In true ‘us’ style, we decided to do
something completely different. Elwin had actually experimented with
spearmint while he was doing his distilling course and the instructors
told him not to do it, as it’s a very difficult flavour profile to balance. Of
course, that made us want to do it even more,” she laughs.
Balancing the botanicals in a gin is a very precise and calculated process
and, because they wanted the spearmint and cardamom to be the
dominant flavour profile, theirs is a contemporary rather than a traditional
London Dry gin.
All the botanicals in the gin are grown on an organic farm in the Cape. It
has grapefruit, lime and lemon peel, as well as juniper, coriander, calamus
root, cardamom and, of course, fresh spearmint leaves.
Karoa Cara co-founders
Elwin and Janie Barnes
“Growing the spearmint was a challenge at first, but we’ve
managed to perfect it,” says Janie. “We literally pick the
fresh spearmint on the morning of distillation.”
Commenting on the gin’s cloudy appearance, Elwin says it
was something they researched extensively before going
ahead with. “It’s been done overseas and the concept just
resonated with us. Why go to so much effort to create
the flavour and make a botanically-rich gin only to strip
out the essential oils to make it appear clear? You get the
most beautiful pearlescent glow when you add ice and
tonic to our gin. It actually looks beautiful.”
Because the gin itself is so full of flavour, you don’t need to
add anything to it other than regular tonic water and ice.
The taste of spearmint is not too strong and you don’t get
it straight off the bat, but it starts to come through after a
few sips.
The exquisite bottle is, of course, a big draw card for the
Karoa Cara White edition. We wanted to keep it clean,
simplistic and elegant. We import our bottles and print
directly onto the bottle rather than having labels,” says
Janie.
The White edition is the premier edition and the first in
their range, but the couple says there are more to come.
They will be adding a vodka as well as a more affordable,
fun gin option soon!
A few gin drinking tips …
• The bottle with the most awards and stickers doesn’t
necessarily contain the best gin
• When you first open a bottle of gin, pour a single shot
and give it a good smell with your mouth open. You
should be able to pick up the flavours and identify the
botanicals.
• Never swirl gin! You’ll just release the alcohol and burn
your nose.
• A good gin should be so well balanced that it doesn’t
need a ‘fruit salad’ added to it to enhance the flavours.
Keep it simple and go back to the basics: gin, a good tonic
and lots of ice!
Indoor plant of the month…
Get into the festive spirit with Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera). This is a green-leaved
succulent that produces brilliantly coloured pink, red or purple flowers at the end of their
hanging stems. Even though they are succulents, they need evenly moist soil when in flower
and a humid environment. Place plants in a position that receives good indirect light, but not
sunlight. Plants will flower for several weeks. They look fabulous in a hanging basket, which
encourages the plant to produce more stems, or place in a position where the stems can
cascade. Apply a liquid fertiliser every two weeks once the buds form. Details: lvgplant.co.za
Garden tasks
for November
• For non-stop flowers in
shade and semi-shade plant
Impatiens ‘Beacon’, Sunpatiens,
New Guinea impatiens and
begging begonias. • For
sunny spots there’s alyssum,
antirrhinum, bedding dahlias,
bedding salvia, celosia,
chrysanthemums, dianthus,
gazanias, nemesia, portulaca,
vinca and zinnias. • Watering
is the most important task,
and all plants will benefit from
deep watering twice a week.
Mulching keeps the soil moist
for longer and encourages
earthworms. • Spread a 5.1.5
granular fertiliser around to
feed the flowers, lawn, and
shrubs to replace nutrients
taken up in spring. Water well
afterwards. • Summer veggies
can still be sown this month.
Cucumber “Crystal Apple’ (RAW) has the
shape of a Granny Smith apple with a
pale, greenish-white skin, but the taste is
pure cucumber with a tang. The smooth,
creamy fruit is best eaten young, and is a
bright, crunchy addition to salads. It is a
compact growing plant.
Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
or rawliving.co.za
Veggie of the month:
Cucumbers are a super salad
veggie; crunchy, cool on the
tongue and calorie free. They
grow easily from seed, and for
good germination sow two
to three seeds in one hole.
Don’t ask why, it just seems to
work! If you don’t have space,
grow cucumbers vertically, by
tying and training them onto
a wooden trellis, along a fence,
tee-pee or home-made frame.
Cucumbers grown this way
are less likely to suffer from
powdery mildew because the
leaves stay dry.
Cucumbers need plenty of
water during hot and dry
periods. The best form of
watering is flood watering so
that the leaves don’t get wet.
Feed with a balanced fertiliser
WIDE OPEN SPACES
TRELLIDOR ESTATE SHUTTER
Yes, it’s possible to live in them and be safe too!
Barrier security is not one of those ‘feel
good’ products like delicious food or
gorgeous jewellery. That was until Trellidor
started creating designs that looked nothing
like security products. We chatted to two
rising stars within Trellidor, who showed us
some fabulous new innovations and how
they blend in with our coastal lifestyles.
Darryl Wakefield is the Trellidor Retail and
Commercial Manager and Gabriel
Veerasamy is Sales Manager at the company’s
new flagship store in Umhlanga. Both
have had long histories with Trellidor and
seen it grow from supplying steel sliding
gates and burglar bars to developing a
whole range of options that can be adapted
to modern living. “We’ve seen changes in
customer demand all over the world,” says
Darryl, who was previously General Manager
of Trellidor Ghana, a hub for the region,
including Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Sierra
Leone, Ivory Coast and Gambia. He
returned to the Durban head office as
International Business and Project Development
Manager before taking on his current
role.
“Housing developments are mushrooming
everywhere. All of them need some sort of
protection, either from criminals or from
more natural problems like mosquitoes,
monkeys and snakes. This type of home
often doesn’t need the strongest security
products, but they certainly need something
to deal with these challenges.” So the
Trellidor engineers set about creating
designs that would do the job expected of
their products without detracting from the
light, bright, open, multi-purposes spaces
we live in today.
First up is Clear Guard, a woven stainless-steel
mesh screen with a neat aluminium
frame. The screen blocks out just about
anything you don’t want inside your home,
but it’s also see-through, so you don’t lose
that all-important connection between your
indoor and outdoor areas. “We have a
well-priced model that is popular for homes
in estates, especially golf estates where

wayward golf balls are a danger! We have
fitted it around entertainment areas, next to
windows and doors and in passages,” says
Gabriel, an award-winning Trellidor Sales
Consultant.
“People love Clear Guard because it keeps
out flies, mosquitoes and monkeys, all of
which are a problem in Durban and the
coastal areas. It also helps with internal
climate control and filters out harmful UV
rays.”
The second design that Darryl and Gabriel’s
customers are keen on is the Estate Shutter.
This is a well-priced aluminium louvre
shutter. Its appeal lies in its clean lines,
uncluttered exterior, and versatility, fitting in
with any style of architecture and interior
design.
“It’s a great buy because it is a shutter,
blinds and burglar proofing in one product.
It helps to insulate against noise, heat and
cold when the shutters are closed, and it is
an attractive room divider in open plan
homes that have to be used for many
purposes, like work, play and entertaining.”
There are more great designs to see, so
Darryl and Gabriel encourage people living
in Durban, Ballito and surrounding areas to
visit the Trellidor showroom at 99 Umhlanga
Rocks Drive.
“We have a friendly team of people there
that will show you the full range of options
and give you expert advice if you need it,”
says Gabriel.
Just so nu nues
Adorable range of baby and toddler wear, made locally
There are matching
mom and me
outfits. So cute!
Nu nues. A quintessentially South African phrase used, so
often, when talking about a particularly adorable babe
(aren’t they all?). A word that has its origins in the French
language - nu nues [pronounced nooh - noohs] meaning
naked or bare. What this refers to is the French effortless
and minimalistic approach to dressing little ones like mini
Parisiennes! Now, we’re all over Nu Nues locally.
This new classic baby and toddler range is
environmentally friendly, plastic-free and locally made
using only fair trade, natural textiles to make this world
better for our Lé Petit.
Rochelle Bailey, owner of Nu Nues, started her
entrepreneurial journey when her son was born, and she
found herself “with a five-week-old baby in my arms, not
knowing what I was going to do when my UIF money ran
out.” She started off by opening a small design agency,
but after a few years of not enjoying it, decided to start
doing what she really wanted to do for a long time, which
was fashion focused. And right there, in the middle of a
pandemic, Nu Nues was born!
She explains: “The most important part of this journey
has been having my son around me while growing the
business. My objective was always to have him close by
while I worked doing something I love.”
That she did. And from teaching herself how to
lockstitch on YouTube and working in her son’s
bedroom, Rochelle now has a successful online store
where you’ll find Nu Nues full range of adorable baby
and toddler wear, all made from 100 per cent cotton,
as well as memory blankets and decor. Delivery around
SA available. Details: nunues.com, Instagram @nunues_sa,
Ballito cycle stars
A group of young mountain
bikers made Ballito proud
when they walked away
winners of each of their
respective categories at
the South African national
cross-country mountain
biking champs held in
Pietermaritzburg recently. We
found out a little more about
these young champs …
Text: Leah Shone | Photograph: Karen Mackridge
Joshua Johnson (13), Drive
Train Academy
Josh, who is already well known in
the mountain biking world, came first
in the sub junior boys category. He
started riding at the age of four on the
dusty dirt roads of Zambia and moved
back to his parent’s hometown of
Ballito when he was seven. After
competing in the Spur School Series,
Josh realized his love of competing
and he went on to win the series in
2018 and 2019. He has two KZN titles
under his belt as well as the KZN road
champ title for 2019 and 2020. He was
also the SA Cup winner in 2019. In
2020 he joined Drive Train Academy
under the professional training of Ty
White with Shiptech Petroleum as his
official sponsor. This year Josh was in
the sub junior category which saw
him racing against boys all older than
him.
Sophie Bircher (9), Sugar Rats
Club
Sophie, who placed first in the nipper
girls category, is in Grade 3 at Umhlali
Preparatory School. She started riding
when she was seven years old and
joined the Sugar Rats Club at the start
of 2020. She soon started competing
in the Seeff Lap Series, where her
parents realised her natural ability
Sophie Bircher, Madison Bateson, Errin Mackridge and Joshua Johnson
for cycling. She competed in the KZN XCO series and came second in KZN
champs at the age of eight. She was soon promoted into the Sugar Rats Racing
team, where she has flourished. Being the youngest in the team, she has had to
work extra hard to keep up with the group but has proven she is a force to be
reckoned with.
Madison Bateson (11), Sugar Rats Club
Madison took first place in the Sprog Girls category. She started cycling at the
age of six years old, following in the footsteps of her older sister Chloe (who
recently competed in the UCI World Champs overseas). Madison has always
loved the outdoors and single track and is never afraid to try anything new. She is
also part of the Sugar Rats Racing Team.
Errin Mackridge (14), Drive Train Academy
Errin is an incredibly talented and passionate young cyclist and rides for the Drive
Train Academy. She came first in the sub junior girls category at the SA champs.
Errin has been riding from very young, but discovered her passion for the sport
when she competed in the Spur Schools Series in 2017. Always supported by
her family, Errin takes her racing career very seriously. This has been a big year for
her, as she has managed to reach her goals of becoming both the KZN and SA
champ in her age category. “I wouldn’t have been able to tick these goals off my
list without the help of my friends, team mates, family and coach, Tyrone White.
She hopes to become a professional cyclist and compete in both the Olympics
and The World Cup Series.
Three other Ballito youngsters also did exceptional well, finishing on the podium
at the SA champs. They are: Liam McIntosh (second, nipper boys) and Seth and
Lila Aszalos (who placed third in the sub-junior boys and third in the sprog girls
categories respectively).
Off the grid
Exhale. Relax. And reconnect with the natural world, at this
environmentally-friendly Paternoster guest house
Compiled by: Kym Argo
There are, we recently discovered, so many reasons to visit Paternoster on the Cape’s West Coast. All
whitewashed cottages, long stretches of beach and icy waters (for those who believe in the benefits
of cold water swimming). More (mostly really exceptional) restaurants than you’d imagine in a small
seaside town, and plenty of adventure for those who like to do more than lie in the sun sipping
cocktails.
Plenty of places to stay, too ... with our first option being the Gonana Guest House. Why? Well, firstly
it’s perched right on the Bekbaai beach on the quieter side of town, with endless views out over the
ocean, and bordered by the Columbine Nature Reserve. Originally a family home called Whalesong, it’s
now owned by Swedish entrepreneur and interior designer Jonas (namesake of the biblical whale tale!)
Sandström, who, together with his partner, has transformed the house, and made it Paternoster’s first
sustainable and environmentally conscious guest house ... another reason why it’s should be top of the
where-to-stay list.
If you care about the environment, and by now don’t we all, Gonana is effectively off the grid and is
completely environmentally ethical. Solar power provides the electricity, rainwater feeds the house,
there are water wise showers and grey water is recycled for loos and use in the indigenous gardens.
With his motto of ‘think global, buy local’, Jonas used only local builders and contractors, furniture was
crafted locally, even the blankets, hand towels and bathroom amenities were made locally.
But off the grid by no means indicates less luxury. The eight guest rooms are charmingly decorated ...
all natural hues and feel-me textures; some lead directly onto the beach, others open up onto terraces
or onto the pool. There is one self-catering room, which makes sense to book if you’re planning on a
longish stay, and from mid-December, two four-sleeper self-catering cottages will be available. With
fully equipped kitchens, dining areas and patios, these are perfect for those wanting total privacy.
Guests meet in the upstairs room-with-a-view ... where there’s a jolly excellent breakfast served, as well
as endless teas, refreshments and local snacks (think Darling Toffees) for in-between-meal-treats.
For lunch and dinners - guests walk into town and choose an eatery that appeals. There’s Wolfgat
(ranked Best Restaurant in Africa this year), the amazing Voorstrandt, right on the beach and with great
views alongside your fish and chips, and Waffle Wharf at Whales Rib, where the waffles are sweet and
generously sized. A highlight is Leeto ... unexpected, as we weren’t thinking fine dining, but it is - and
we say this not at all lightly - world class. It’s our must-do choice. A. Maz. Ing!
For those adventurous travellers - there’s e-biking with Wow e-Bikes along the beach or up to the
lighthouse in the Cape Columbine Reserve (loads of va va voom power to get you up the inclines and
through the deep sand), kayaking (with plenty of seal spotting and, if you’re lucky, whale sighting, too);
or just long walks along the beach (to work off that waffle).
Gonana is derived from the Zulu word embrace ... it’s fitting not only for this warm, welcoming
guest house (which is newest member of the Cape Country Routes stable), but for the town, too. A
really lovely destination for your next holiday. Rates from R1620 a night, the self-catering cottages
from R1400 a night for the unit, and there are always specials worth enquiring about. Details:
Can’t get to the coast this year? This is almost as good as the real thing. Get
lost in the pages of Wild Seas, by National Geographic photographer Thomas
Peschak, who, when he’s not underwater, calls Cape Town home. In the book
he’s documenting the beauty and fragility of underwater life and the majesty
of wild coastlines. From gregarious gray whales in the waters of Baja California
to manta rays in the Maldives, from sharks in a feeding frenzy to sea turtles
the size of bears ... the book shows off the gems of the oceans as well as the
darker side - the pollution, overfishing and climate change. Page after page
after glorious page of images - from southern Africa and the Galápagos, the
Seychelles and the Maldives, and so many more spectacular destinations
which he explored with little more than a mask, fins and a camera. A
magnificent buy, which will bring joy long after the Summer beach holiday is
over. HPH Publishing, R750 at book stores or from hphpublishing.co.za. Once
you’ve poured over the book, watch Peschak’s TED talk Dive Into an Ocean
Photographer’s World, which has been viewed more than a million times.
We’re
Summer skincare from QMS
starting our New Year resolutions
early. As in right now. Only we’re calling
them our New Life resolutions and our
first one is to make sure we protect our
skin all through Summer with the best
products we can find.
QMS Medicosmetics were formulated
by an aesthetic surgeon, lecturer and
international authority on skin aging and
skin regeneration. And two products we
think are essential in our new life regime
are the QMS Cellular Sun Shield SPF 50+
Sunscreen Lotion, and the QMS Active
Glow SPF 15 Tinted Day Cream. The
suncream is a powerful formula with UVA/
UVB sun protection, as well as in innovative
DNA-repair complex. It’s lightweight, so
is easily absorbed and protects against
premature signs of skin aging caused by
sun exposure. The Active Glow (previously
known as Sport Active Cream), is a
lightweight, sheer, colour adaptive cream,
with a SPF15 and minerals. It helps blur
imperfections, so your skin glows with an
even colour. It’s an ideal day cream, and like
the sunscreen lotion, is suitable for all skin
types. You’ll find them for R1120 and R885
respectively at futurethis.co.za. We’ve giving
one reader this pair of QMS products.
