Letter From the

Executive

The year 2020 brought unforeseen challenges

to the entire world. In order to meet those

challenges and continue serving grieving children

and families during a pandemic, New Hope for

Kids quickly shifted our grief support services

to a virtual platform. Groups were modified to

operate on Zoom, and it worked. Kids processed

their grief through special activities with friends

in virtual group sessions. Adult group participants

stayed connected to each other virtually, sharing

feelings of fear, anxiety and grief. Covid-19

changed life as we knew it, but it didn’t stop us

from helping kids and families moving forward on

their grief journeys.

Our Wishes for Kids program was met with its

own COVID challenges. The very nature of the

wish program includes a vulnerability that was

magnified by the pandemic. Children who come

to us for a wish are already in an at-risk health

situation, even in normal times, and parents were

extra protective of their wish child’s health, as we

expected and respected. Popular wishes became

out of reach due to theme parks closing, travel

restrictions and more. A bright spot for a few wish

children came in the form of a specialized bike

that was a perfect fit (literally, they’re custom

made!) for a pandemic. They allowed these great

kids to enjoy a sense of freedom and fun times

outdoors with their family.

The newly added Alan J. Saffran Scholarship

Fund granted four college-bound students

$2,000 each in 2020. These exceptional young

people had attended our grief program after the

death of a parent, and shown perseverance in the

face of adversity. The launch of the scholarship

program was a great success, and we look

forward to offering this benefit to the young folks

in our grief program for years to come.

While shifting to manage the effects of the

pandemic on our programs, we continued to focus

on our Garden of Hope. In October 2020 we

were granted our Certificate of Completion from

the City of Maitland. This important milestone

marked the beginning of opportunities to bring

the healing effects of nature into our program

services.

The US Small Business Administration’s PPP loans

(Payroll Protection Program), created to provide

financial assistance during Covid-19, allowed us to

avoid any reduction in staff during the pandemic.

These funds helped fill in gaps in donations,

resulting in a close to normal income year.

New Hope for Kids is committed to meeting the

challenges of changing times with compassion

for those who need us. With your help, we will

continue to bring hope into the lives of the

children and families we serve.

About Us

Since 1996, New Hope for Kids has been helping

Central Florida children in need. Our purpose is

to bring hope, healing and happiness to children

and families suffering from grief, loss or lifethreatening

illnesses. New Hope for Kids achieves

this through two programs:

Our mission is to

support children and

families grieving the

death of a loved one

and to grant wishes

to children with lifethreatening

illnesses

in Central Florida.

Milestones at

a Glance

In spite of the COVID-19

pandemic, New Hope for Kids

raised total revenues of $743,645

to fund our programs and

capital campaign.

New Hope for Kids Wishes for

Kids received one of the largest

donations in its history, more than

$79,000, from the Cambridge

Investment Research Company.

Our October 23rd annual Art of

the Vine and BMW Drawing of

Chance went virtual and raised

combined net revenues of $209,156.

New Hope for Kids completed

construction of Phase 3 of our

Building New Hope Capital

Project. The Garden of Hope

received funding from the Herris-

Peckett Family Foundation, Dr.

Phillips Charities, Kiwanis Orlando

Foundation, the Galloway

Foundation, Advent Health and

many other donors.

New Hope for Kids Wishes

for Kids provided 12 wishes to

Central Florida children with lifethreatening

illnesses.

408 generous volunteers donated

their time to New Hope for Kids

for a total of 9807.5 volunteer

hours, which contributed greatly

to our success in 2020.

New Hope for Kids successfully

initiated virtual program sessions

and activities via Zoom.

New Hope for Kids Center for

Grieving Children virtual

programming served 319 children

through our bi-weekly sessions and

more than 45 through our camps.

New Hope for Kids provided a

second year of group support for

Young Adults with seed funding

from the New York Life Foundation.

New Hope for Kids provided 5

fun-filled family events for the

enjoyment of 458 Kids and 282

adults using both virtual and

drive through formats for the

safety of our kids.

Grief Program

New Hope for Kids’ Grief Support Program

provides a safe and supportive environment where

children grieving the death of a loved one can

share their experience with others facing the same

feelings of loss. Offering a unique opportunity for

children to begin and continue their grief journey,

New Hope for Kids strives to provide our families

with hope, healing and renewal.

We also extend support for the entire family

through parent support groups, community

awareness projects, information and referral

services, as well as family events and summer

camps throughout the year.

A key difference between our program and

others is that our program focuses on attending

support groups over a twelve month period in

the home-like setting of the Center for Grieving

Children. We believe the grief process cannot be

adequately addressed through short-term or inschool

programs.

Young Adult Group

In order to meet an important need in our

community, New Hope for Kids expanded its grief

support offerings in 2019 to include a support

group for grieving young adults ages 19-25.

Journey to Hope was created in collaboration

with Rollins College Communications, and held its

first meeting on May 27, 2019.

With grant support from the New York Life

Foundation, these support group meetings

focused on aspects of the grief experience and

how it can impact this important time in a young

adult’s life. In a comfortable setting (that always

included snacks) with the guidance of a lead

facilitator, attendees built trust in each other and

shared difficult conversations within the safety of

their group. Stress management, self-care, and

learning the importance of a safe and strong

support network were themes of some of the

gatherings. The 6-meeting 12-week program will

be held twice a year, in the spring and fall.

1 in 12 children in Florida will

experience the death of a parent or

sibling by age 18. 1

Principle Beliefs

2020 Family Attendance

New Hope for Kids believes every child deserves the opportunity

to grieve in a supportive and understanding environment. Some

things to keep in mind when dealing with grief:

205 Families

Grief is a natural reaction to

the loss of a loved one for

children, AND adults.

780Total

247 Adults

319 Children

9 Childcare

Caring and acceptance assist

in the healing process.

Within each individual is the

natural capacity to heal.

Thanks to Our Volunteers

Extensively trained

Grief Facilitators are the

heart of this program. They

are trained to facilitate groups,

make families feel at home, and

generally support the work of

the program. Grief Facilitators

come from all walks of life and

contribute, on average, 6 hours

a month to New Hope

for Kids.

The duration and intensity

of grief are unique for

each individual.

6 7

Wish Program

New Hope for Kids Wish program is

unique for the following reasons:

In 1985 the Children’s Wish Program was founded

as a not-for-profit charity and is the longest

running wish program in Central Florida. Children’s

Wish was created to provide hope and a once in

a lifetime experience to children fighting a lifethreatening

illness. New Hope for Kids Wishes for

Kids Program continues the legacy by providing

wishes for children that other organizations, in the

Central Florida area, are not able to serve.

Wishes for Kids grants wishes to children with

life-threatening illnesses who have not yet reached

their 19th birthday nor had a wish previously

granted. A life-threatening illness is defined by

New Hope for Kids as any illness which will in all

likelihood shorten the child’s full life expectancy.

Focus Follow-Up Flexibility

Unlike other wish-granting

organizations, New Hope

for Kids Wish Program is

not affiliated with a national

organization, but is an

independent, locally based

charity that focuses on Central

Florida children. Occasionally a

wish is granted out of state, but

90% or more are granted right

here. That means the money

that is raised by Central Florida

community members goes right

back into our economy. New

Hope for Kids does not receive

funds from State or Federal

reimbursement and is not a

United Way agency.

Because most of our wish

recipients live in the vicinity,

New Hope for Kids is able to

provide additional services and

support beyond the wish itself.

We call ourselves the New Hope

Kids Family, because we join

together for regular activities

to have fun, share resources

and provide emotional support.

These activities are designed

to prevent the isolation and

sense of hopelessness that often

accompanies grief and illness.

Families help each other while

forming lasting relationships.

New Hope for Kids is able to

meet a wide spectrum of needs

through wishes and community

resources. We follow guidelines,

but consider each wish on a

case-by-case basis to ensure

that the child’s best interests

are being met.

Although the Wishes for Kids Program is

not able to cure the life-threatening illnesses

of their wish children, it is proud to grant

wishes and go beyond the wish – offering

support, resources and community for these

special families.

Amiah’s Wish

I cannot say thank you enough for this. When we

were at the Give Kids the World Village getting

orientated and given all the “stuff” it was hard

not to cry. We were blown away with what we

received last week. We would never be able to do

anything like that again! What a blessing.

Celeste’s Wish

Celeste is 4 years old and her wish was for an

adaptive tricycle. The tricycle and accessories are

made to fit Celeste to “grow” with her. The wish will

provide a new sense of freedom and joy. Gaining

mobility will also increase her self-esteem and

allow her to keep up with her big sister.

Our Events

Art of the Vine

All we can say is “Wow! Thank you!” In a world that

feels upside-down in many ways, we had no idea

what to expect for this year’s Art of the Vine and

BMW Drawing of Chance. Who knew we’d have

such great success! Our first-ever large virtual

fundraiser, streamed live October 23rd from the

brand new showroom floor at Fields BMW in

Winter Park, was well-attended by generous and

supportive people who purchased BMW tickets,

shopped the silent and live auctions, and gave

from their heart. The generosity and commitment

of so many individual and corporate donors made

it clear that New Hope for Kids is well-loved and

well-respected by our community.

We want to thank every person who supported

this year’s Art of the Vine and BMW Drawing of

Chance. Our gratitude goes to the Fields Auto

Group and Fields BMW, and to John Fields and

John Mantione for their overwhelming generosity.

Special thanks go to Tony Martin, Event Chair,

Pat Michaels, Board Chair, and to the entire event

committee. Everyone truly worked together to

ensure all of the details fell into place.

Each summer, New Hope for Kids creates a special

camp for kids in our grief and wish programs.

Technology has provided a way for us to “camp”

virtually this year. Creative, fun, friendship-building

activities were “Zoomed” in to campers at home in

this special virtual experience. Staff and volunteers

lead campers in crafting, dancing, making music,

telling stories, making (and eating!) snacks, and

much, much more.

Since 2008, communities throughout the country have observed

Children’s Grief Awareness Day by shedding light on the needs of

grieving children and the benefits they obtain through the support

of others.

The City of Maitland on

Tuesday recognized the

New Hope for Kids Center

for Grieving Children with a

proclamation of Thursday,

Garden of Hope

Exercise, fresh air, a healthy diet, and proper

emotional support work together to give each

person the opportunity to work through the

challenges of life. In New Hope for Kids outside

spaces, a garden will include an area with grow

boxes for vegetables and herbs. The play area will

build friendships and good health as they play

basketball, kickball, four square and other games.

With safety in mind, the gardens and play area

will be enclosed by a fence when in use by children

and families.

The play area will be surrounded by The Garden

of Hope, a memorial garden that will be open to

our families and others that live in our community

for a series of special remembrance events during

the year. This area will allow families to walk or sit

in the garden area as well as create memorials for

their own loved ones. It can also be incorporated

into special grief activities for the kids in their

support groups.

We are extremely grateful for the profound

financial support of the Herris Peckett Family,

Dr. Phillips Charities, the Kiwanis Club of

Orlando Foundation, and The Joe and Sarah

Galloway Foundation. Their generosity along with

professional services donated by Elena Pathak of

KTH Architects, and Ruth Perry and Pete Sechler

of GAI Landscape Architects moved this project

from dream to reality, and we are so excited for

the future healing and joy that will be created in

The Garden of Hope at New Hope for Kids.

Opportunities to support this special outdoor

space are available with giving levels starting

at $25. We are very pleased to announce that

your contributions will be doubled by the HCF

Foundation dollar for dollar up to $50,000!

So much

FUN
